Fine Motor Control - Fine Motor Control (2019) EN

This is a band that requires more observation. Fine Motor Control are four Canadians from Toronto, who were connected by playing extremely melodic psychedelic music. This March they released their long-play debut and I, for one, am enchanted.

They write about themselves that they are inspired by a whole range of genres: "psychedelia, shoegaze, garage, grunge, britpop, and surf" and it can hardly be denied. The airiness of shoegaze (Thorns), melody of britpop, lightness of surf, grunge's tooth (Dozer), everything is present on this album signed by an abstract shape and shoegazish pinks. And there's also (or perhaps first of all) the ability to write songs that go directly into the whistling section of the brain. Such as Radio My TV, Next Hangover, or 8th to RCA.

In the Canadians' music all of the ingredients fit together perfectly and the album turns out to be not only a promising debut but one of the best psychedelic shoegaze albums of the year.

To zespół, któremu trzeba się bliżej przyjrzeć. Fine Motor Control to czwórka Kanadyjczyków z Toronto, których połączyło granie ekstremalnie melodyjnej psychodelii. W marcu wypuścili swój długogrający debiut i jestem zauroczony.

Piszą o sobie, że inspiruje ich cała gama gatunków: "psychodelia, shoegaze, garage, grunge, britpop i surf" i trudno temu zaprzeczyć. Eteryczność shoegaze'u (Thorns), melodyjność britpopu, lekkość surfu, pazur grunge'u (Dozer), wszystko jest obecne na płycie sygnowanej abstrakcyjną bryłą i shoegaze'owymi kolorami. A do tego dochodzi umiejętność pisania kawałków, które słuchacz automatycznie zaczyna podśpiewywać. Tak jest z Radio My TV, Next Hangover, czy 8th to RCA.

Wszystko to gra u Kanadyjczyków idealnie, a płyta okazuje się być nie tylko obiecującym debiutem, ale wręcz jednym z lepszych albumów z psychodelicznymi shoegaze'em tego roku.

Town Portal - Of Violence (2019) EN

One of two extremely interesting albums released recently by an Australian label Art As Catharsis is a work from the Danish Town Portal. Drawing from bot instrumental post-rock and minimalist experiments artists showed their third album called Of Violence.

It is actually post-post-rock, deconstructed instrumental music fascinates with unique and non-compromised approach. Their energy comes from apparently chaotic composition of melodies, paces and sounds in general. Both the quicker fragments (brilliant Archright) and surprisingly ballad-like (Receiving End) have their originate atmosphere. Town Portal use raw-sounding guitar riffs and absolutely crazy drums but the core of their music is the unorthodox way of writing music that is closer to experimental music than traditional post-rock.

Pierwszy z dwóch nadzwyczaj interesujących albumów wydanych niedawno przez australijską wytwórnie Art As Catharsis to dzieło duńskiego Town Portal. Czerpiący zarówno z instrumentalnego post-rocka jak i z minimalistycznych muzycznych eksperymentów artyści wydali tam swój trzeci krążek Of Violence.

Ten w zasadzie post-post-rock, dekonstruowana muzyka instrumentalna fascynuje oryginalnością i bezpretensjonalnością. Energia ich muzyki bierze swój początek w na pozór chaotycznym zestawieniu melodii, temp i dźwięków. Zarówno te szybsze fragmenty (świetne Archright) jak i zaskakująco balladowe (Receiving End) mają swój klimat. Town Portal posługuje się surowymi w brzmieniu gitarowymi riffami i szaloną miejscami perkusją, a u podstaw ich muzyki leżą nieortodoksyjnie napisane kompozycje które przypominają bardziej muzykę eksperymentalną niż bardziej tradycyjny post-rock.

undertheskin - N E G A T I V E (2019) EN

Solo project by Mariusz Łuniewski is definitely not a new thing on the Polish and World scenes. After well-received debut in 2015 (the best-selling alternative album on Bandacmp at one point), a new album appeared this year, one entitled Negative.

Undertheskin was so welcome in the world because of his catchy approach to atmospheric, industrial coldwave. His gloomy but also attractive vocal reminds me of progressive rock's one to some extend and sometimes with traditional coldwave, especially that it sounds in frozen, unsettling void. It is barely filled with samples and synths, the void's still there.

On the other hand, Łuniewski feels also good when it comes to writing catchy songs that could be, I'm not afraid to say that, successful on radio charts. And it's mostly about Burn. Melodic chorus sung with appropriate charisma and a lot of dark climate of industrial electronics and coldwave music.

Solowy projekt Mariusza Łuniewskiego to na pewno nie debiutant na polskiej i światowej scenie. Po znakomicie przyjętym debiucie w 2015 (najlepiej sprzedający się album alternatywny na Bandcampie), w tym roku ukazała się druga płyta długogrająca zatytułowana Negative.

Undertheskin zachwycił świat swoim przebojowym podejściem do klimatycznego, industrialnego coldwave'u. Ponury a jednocześnie pociągający wokal kojarzy się trochę z progresywnym rockiem, a trochę z tradycyjną zimną falą, zwłaszcza że odzywa się on w mroźnej, niepokojącej próżni. Zapełnić się ją starają sample i synthy, ale ta próżnia wciąż tam jest.

Z drugiej strony, Łuniewskiemu nie obce jest pisanie wpadających w ucho, w zasadzie, nie zawaham się tego powiedzieć, radiowych kawałków, które spokojnie poradziłyby sobie na listach przebojów, myślę zwłaszcza o Burn. Melodyjny refren zaśpiewany z odpowiednią przebojowością, a do tego wciąż przecież mroczna atmosfera industrialnej elektroniki i zimnofalowego grania.

Antar - Dronita (2019) PL

Miażdżące gitary, perkusja jak moździerze i paskudnie agresywny wokal, to recepta Chilijcyków z zespołu Antar na dobrą, post-metalową muzykę. Inspirujący się zespołami takimi jak Lantlos, Cult of Luna czy Neurosis, muzycy wydali niedawno swój drugi krążek zatytułowany Dronita.

Trzy kawałki plus intro na płycie to kawał instrumentalnego hałasu niełagodzonego wcale przez ciche, szepczące wokale (Gris). Te dodają całości raczej koszmarnej otoczki jeśli już, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z chrapliwym screamem. Muzyka Chilijczyków jest głośna i agresywnie gitarowa, niemniej z pewnością tworzy też pewien pełen napięcia i smutku klimat. Również gra bardzo metalową perkusją, zwłaszcza na początku Sistemy, jest na wysokim poziomie. Potęguje ona adrenalinę, którą w słuchaczach wywołują kawałki z drugiej półkuli.

Antar - Dronita (2019) EN

Crushing guitars, drums like mortars and awfully aggressive vocal, this is the recipe for good, post-metal music from the Chileans of Antar. Inspired by bands such as Lantlos, Cult of Luna or Neurosis, the musicians released their second album called Dronita.

Three tracks plus intro makes the album a nice piece of instrumental noise that is definitely not soothed down by the quiet, whispering vocals (Gris). More like they make the whole thing sound like from a nightmare, especially when combined with rough screams. The Chileans' music is loud and aggressively guitar but it still creates an atmosphere of tension and sadness. Also the way the drums are used to sound extremely heavy and metal-like, especially at the beginning of Sistema, is well-performed. It pumps up the adrenaline that is generated in the audience when listening to this music from another part of the world.

Fragile Animals - Only Shallow​/​/​Only More (2019) PL

Fragile Animals to shoegaze'owe trio z australijskiego Sunshine Coast (co za wspaniała nazwa!), które powoli wyrabia swoją markę na eterycznej scenie antypodów, a także całego świata. Po tym jak dwa lata temu wydali swoją debiutancką EP-kę Light That Fades, poszli za ciosem i nagrali kolejną, zatytułowaną Only Shallow​/​/​Only More.

Skojarzenia z tytułem są oczywiste, jednak jeśli My Bloody Valentine rzeczywiście inspirowało muzyków to nie jest to dosłowne w ich muzyce. Wygląda raczej na to, że trio wzięło z twórczości europejczyków gównie zamiłowanie do eterycznego hałasu. Bo wokal Victorii Jenkins o ile z pewnością szepczący i nastrojowy, jest wyraźny i raczej kojarzy się z dream popem spod znaku Beach House niż z "twardym" shoegaze'em. Także melodyjność i przebojowość kawałków na płycie ciągnie album w kierunku szeroko pojętego popu.

Podobnie jest z warstwą muzyczną, jest głównie nośnikiem melodii i podkładem pod wokal. Wydaje mi się, że Fragile Animals najlepiej brzmią w bardziej nastrojowych fragmentach (świetne Melbourne), mam nadzieję, że pójdą w tę stronę w przyszłości.

Fragile Animals - Only Shallow​/​/​Only More (2019) EN

Fragile Animals is a shoegaze trio from the Australian Sunshine Coast (this wonderful name actually influences their music), that is slowly establishing their brand on the airy scene of the Oz and the world as well. After they released their debut EP Light That Fades two years ago, they are following with the new one, entitled Only Shallow​/​/​Only More.

The title makes an obvious association, but if My Bloody Valentine was really among the bands influencing the musicians, it's not literary visible in their works. It rather seems as if the trio took from the Europeans mostly the love for airy noise. Because Victoria Jenkins' vocal of course is whispering and atmospheric, but it's also clear and more likely to relate to Beach House-esque dream pop than "hardcore" shoegaze. Also the melodic and catchy nature of the album's tracks pull it towards the widely defined pop.

The music layer is similar, it's mostly the means to express melodies and background for the vocal. For me, Fragile Animals sound best in more climatic fragments (as in the brilliant Melbourne), I hope they'll go in this direction in the future.

Two Demons - Momentum (2019) EN

Momentum is an album from Russia, that is filled with thick, oozing ambient sounds. The project responsible is called Two Demons and there's nothing about them in the Net, but it's no obstacle for enjoying this music.

The ambient offered by the Russian is made of overlaid ambient loops creating some thick, inscrutable and mesmerizing backgrounds on which there are elements appearing, like samples, voices, obstructions and sometimes even instruments like guitar or piano. And some trip-hop sounds. And some airy vocals (Momentum!). And still in this all-embracing space stew every one of those elements has a point.

Momentum to płyta z Rosji wypełniona po brzegi gęstym, sączącym się ambientem. Odpowiadający za nią projekt Two Demons jest zupełnie anonimowy w sieci, ale to nie przeszkadza cieszyć się ich muzyką.

Ambient proponowany przez Rosjanina to nawarstwiające się ambientowe loopy tworzące grube, nieprzeniknione i hipnotyzujące tło, na którym pojawiają się od czasu do czasu sample, głosy, zanieczyszczenia, a nawet instrumenty takie jak gitara czy pianino. A także kilka trip-hopowych dźwięków. I kilka eterycznych chórów (Momentum!). Niemniej we wszechogarniającej kosmicznej zupie to wszytko ma sens i cel.

Demony, noc i metalowa muzyka. Solowy projekt Pawła Polaszka z Torunia, Shattered Mind, właśnie to oferuje. Swoimi mrocznymi muzycznymi przemyśleniami dzieli się na nowej EP-ce zatytułowanej właśnie Your Demons Come at Night .

Album jest prawdziwą ucztą dla wielbicieli twardego, gitarowego grania. W odróżnieniu od wielu innych solowych projektów, Polaszek potrafi dodać swojej muzyce głębi, dzięki której brzmi jak legitny metalowy zespół. Najlepiej słychać to chyba w tytułowym kawałku Your Demons Come at Night. Nie jestem żadnym specem od gitarowych riffów, ale wydaje się, że repertuar zagrań na gitarze muzyk ma bogaty. Najważniejsza jest jednak atmosfera generowana przez cztery kawałki i intro: mroczna niczym tytułowa ventablack i ciężka jak stan, w którym nawiedzają nas demony.

Shattered Mind - Your Demons Come at Night (2019) EN

Demons, night and metal music. The solo project by Paweł Polaszek from the Polish town of Toruń, Shattered Mind, offers just that. The artist shares his dark music thoughts on his new EP called exactly Your Demons Come at Night .

The album is truly a feast for the fans of heavy guitar music. Unlike most of the solo projects, Polaszek is able to add depth to his music which makes it sound as if created by a legit metal band. It can be best heard in the title track Your Demons Come at Night. I am no expert on guitar riffs but it seems to me that the musicians can do quite a lot. But the most important thing for me is the atmosphere he generates on the four tracks plus intro: dark like the afordmentioned ventablack and heavy like the demons that visit us.

Montrouge - El Libro de la Autodestrucción y la Melancolía (2019) EN

Montrouge is a band created by Spanish artists who wanted to play something they couldn't have in their projects: the blending of post-rock and dream pop inspired by bands such as This Will Destroy You, Slowdive or Beach House. And we can now check how they did on their new EP with a gloomy title El Libro de la Autodestrucción y la Melancolía.

The album is opened by the lazy, slowcore pace and warm voice of Lorena Prieto in Carmel-By-The-Sea and it's extremely charming. And although the pace keeps changing (faster, more catchy Océanos standing right next to the ballad track Jobbé-Duval), the Spaniards' music's core idea is clear: clear and melancholic vocals and moody music usually reminding of dream pop than shoegaze's overwhelming wall of sound, although we do have some of the latter in the final parts of the EP. The whole thing is a charming soundtrack filled with melody and melancholy meaning that Beach House can be proud of Montrouge.

Montrouge to zespół stworzony przez hiszpańskich artystów, którzy chcieli zacząć grać coś, czego nie grali w swoich macierzystych formacjach: mieszankę post-rocka i dream popu inspirowanego zespołami typu This Will Destroy You, Slowdive czy Beach House. Teraz możemy sprawdzić jak im poszło na nowej EP-ce o przygnębiającym tytule El Libro de la Autodestrucción y la Melancolía.

Płytę zaczyna powolne, slowcore'owe tempo i ciepły wokal Loreny Prieto w Carmel-By-The-Sea, co ma swój niezwykły urok. I chociaż tempo lubi się zmieniać (szybszy, bardziej przebojowy Océanos sąsiadujący z balladowym Jobbé-Duval) to clue muzyki Hiszpanów się nie zmienia: wyraźny ale melancholijny wokal i nastrojowa muzyka na ogół bardziej dream popowa niż przytłaczająca ścianą shoegaze'owych gitar, chociaż tego też mamy namiastki pod koniec płytki. Całość tworzy urokliwą ścieżkę dźwiękową wypełnioną melodyjnością i melancholią tak że Beach House mogliby być dumni z Hiszpanów.

Elizabeth Colour Wheel - Nocebo (2019) EN

Elizabeth Colour Wheel, punking shoegazers or shoegazing punk rockers from US released their new album. After they were posted about on this blog a year ago with their Queen Tired, now are back with probably even better album called Nocebo.

Because it has it all: mature compositions, poignant vocal (making the back thrill in the opening track Pink Palm) that seamlessly turn into lo-fi punk screams. And greatly energetic music layer successfully combining punk's fast pace and shoegaze's atmosphere. And of course a lot of experiments like in the first track's outro in Somnambulist.

It gets even better when the level of experimenting goes to its heights, just like in the ambient Bedrest, in 34th and its unorthodox composition and finally in Head Home that closes the album in the characteristic for the Americans way: with a great messy explosion.

Elizabeth Colour Wheel, punkujący shoegazerzy albo shoegaze'ujący punkowcy ze Stanów pokazali swój nowy album. Po tym jak rok temu byli bohaterami postu na blogu z płytą Queen Tired, teraz wracają z jeszcze chyba lepszym Nocebo.

Bo nowa płyta ma wszystko: dojrzałe kompozycje, przejmujący wokal (ciarki przechodzą po grzbiecie przy otwierającym album Pink Palm), który płynnie przechodzi w lo-fi'owe, punkowe krzyki. A także pełną energii warstwę muzyczną, która udanie łączy punkową szybkość i shoegaze'ową atmosferę. Oraz oczywiście dużo eksperymentów jak udanie wieńczące pierwszy kawałek outro Somnambulist.

Najciekawiej robi się, gdy eksperymentalność osiąga swoje zenity jak w ambientowym Bedrest, 34th i jego nietypowej konstrukcji czy w końcu w Head Home, zamykającym całość  w charakterystyczny dla Amerykanów sposób: wielką rozpierduchą.

The Haunting Green - Natural Extinctions (2019) EN

One of the most interesting albums with heavy music has emerged from the hand of the Italian duet Cristiano Perin - Chantal Fresco. The Haunting Green skillfully combine ambient atmosphere with metal power and everyone can witness it on the project's LP debut - Natural Extinctions.

As suggested by both the band's name and the album's title, it is devoted to the relationship between human and nature or more precisely, as written by the label house, "the inability of human beings to preserve their innocence and the bond with nature during their existence". It seems that there's no better way to express it than with climatic post-metal infused with tribal elements.

Those long ambient fragments bringing some of the phenomenal atmosphere and drums with their tribal rhythm are what the audience is likely to notice first. They are so welcome diversification for the especially heavy stoner guitars and husky growl. As it is in Litha where the mesmerizing drums solo makes the most impressive fragment of the album.

The Haunting Green - Natural Extinctions (2019) PL

Jeden z najciekawszych albumów wiosny z ciężkim graniem wyszedł właśnie spod rąk włoskiego duetu Cristiano Perin - Chantal Fresco. The Haunting Green udanie łączą ambientowe klimaty z metalową siłą i można się o tym przekonać na długogrającym debiucie projektu - Natural Extinctions.

Tak jak sugeruje zarówno nazwa zespołu jak i płyty, ta zajmuje się w swojej filozofii związkami człowieka i natury, a dokładniej, jak pisze wytwórnia, "ludzką niemożność ocalenia niewinności i powiązania z naturą w czasie egzystencji". Wydaje się, że nic nie pasowałoby lepiej do tego tematu niż przesycony tribalowymi elementami klimatyczny post-metal.

To właśnie długie ambientowe fragmenty dodające fenomenalnego klimatu, a także bębny z ich tribalowym rytmem rzucają się pierwsze w uszy. Never same sky - Eva (2019) PL

Mało zany rosyjski zespół Never Same Sky wydał niedawno debiutancką EP-kę. Eva, bo tak się ona nazywa to instrumentalny post-rock na bardzo dobrym poziomie.

Wkładanie uczucia w gitarowe granie zawsze skutkuje dobrym rezultatem. Tak właśnie jest w przypadku Rosjan. Kompozycje na albumie są zarówno zróżnicowane jak i przemyślane, tak że nie tylko wciągają gitarowym wirem ale i zarażają emocjami. Do tego dochodzi kosmiczna stylizacja zespołu (wystarczy spojrzeć na tytuły poszczególnych kawałków), a także umiejętność do stworzenia absolutnego hałasu, tak jak w tytułowym kawałku Eva.

Not a very known band from Russia, Never Same Sky have released recently their debut EP. Eva, as it's called, shows some instrumental post-rock of a really good quality.

Putting a lot of feelings into guitar music always brings good effects. That's exactly what the Russians offer. The album's compositions are both diverse and well-thought-through, so they don't only involve the audience like guitar whirlpools but also infect wit emotions. And there's also the space-like style of the band (just look at the track titles) and the ability to create an absolute noise, just as it is in the title track Eva.

Crushed Stars - Go Dark, Canaveral (2019) PL

Crushed Stars to uznany już od dłuższego czasu projekt Todda Gauthreaux. Tym razem mistrz dream popowej melancholii powraca z jednym z najlepszych albumów tego roku, Go Dark, Canaveral.

Powolne, slowcore'owe tempo i niepowtarzalnie gęsta atmosfera, to cechuje twórczość Crushed Stars. W jego muzyce delikatnie szepczący wokal doskonale sprawdza się we współpracy z melodyjnością muzyki i eterycznością chórków. Świetnie brzmi zwłaszcza w Saturnine, gdzie niemal do złudzenia przypomina ikoniczne mamrotanie Mike'a Stipe'a z R.E.M. (który nagrał przecież kawałek Saturn Return, przypadek?). Z drugiej strony w takim Demolition Drils, projekt brzmi już prawie jak I Like Trains. Szerokie spektrum.

Z trzeciej strony zdarzają się też całkiem (stosunkowo) szybkie i wpadające w ucho kawałki jak singlowy French Exit, ale to w zasadzie jeden jedyny wyjątek. Siłą albumu jest zdecydowanie jego slowcore'owa, intymnie melancholijna atmosfera.

Crushed Stars - Go Dark, Canaveral (2019) EN

Crushed Stars is a well-established already project by Todd Gauthreaux. This time, the master of dream pop melancholy, comes back with one of the best album's of the year, Go Dark, Canaveral.

Unhurried, slowcore pace and unique atmosphere are the pillars of Crushed Stars works. In his music, delicately whispering vocals are a perfect fit for the melodic music and airiness of the backing vocals making their cooperation effective. They sound brilliantly together especially in Saturnine where the vocals almost perfectly resemble the happy mumbling of Mike Stipe from R.E.M. (who recorded a track called Saturn Return, coincidence?). On the other hand, in Demolition Drils, the project is closer to I Like Trains. Broad spectre.

On the third hand, there are some quite (relatively) quick  and catchy songs like the single French Exit but it makes in fact an exception from the rule. The albums strength lies in its slowcore, intimately melancholic mood.

SleapingDreaming - Victory Roses (2019) PL

SleapingDreaming to trio z nowojorskiego Brooklynu, które kocha robić muzykę bo "to tańsze niż chodzenie na terapię". Bez względu na powody, ich nowa EP-ka zatytułowana Victory Roses zasługuje na kilka ciepłych słów.

I wydaje się, że jej tytuł nie jest przypadkowy bo gęste gitarowe granie tworzące atmosferę zarówno piękną jak i melancholijną faktycznie kojarzy się z Sigur Rós. Zwłaszcza tam, gdzie, jak w świetnym Suspire, głośne i przesterowane gitary spotykają się z pięknymi i delikatnymi klawiszami. Także kolejny rozbudowany kawałek, Orb Web, intryguje oryginalnymi i raczej niepokojącymi rozwiązaniami. Razem z zamykającym album, zagranym z werwą (i, po raz kolejny na tym blogu, z samplami z Blade Runnera) Rainbow Dash, tworzą one bardzo interesującą kompozycję.

SleapingDreaming - Victory Roses (2019) EN

SleapingDreaming is a trio from the New York's Brooklyn, that loves making music because "it's cheaper than therapy". No matter the reason, their new EP entitled Victory Roses deserves some recognition.

And it seems that its title is no coincidence as the thick guitar music creating atmosphere that is both beautiful and melancholic indeed could be inspired by Sigur Rós. Especially where, as in the great Suspire, loud and distorted guitars meet pretty, delicate keys. Also another complex track, Orb Web, intrigues with unique and rather unsettling ways of expression. Together with the album's last Rainbow Dash, a track played with some real power (and with samples from Blade Runner) creates some particularly interesting composition.

Violet Cold - kOsmik (2019) EN

Whatever the Azeri artist touches, it turn gold. Violet Cold, or rather Emin Guliyev, a year ago released an epic, three-albums work called Sommermorgen and now surprises again with, at least as good, new album kOsmik. 

While the triptych Sommermorgen was a place to experiment for Guliyev, now he's back to what he's mainly known for: deafening guitars and space atmosphere synths and samples that get to the audience's ears in the form of thick, powerful wave. The blackgaze atmosphere is only enriched with the artist's angry growls.

But still, there are some unique characteristics to be found in Violet Cold's new music. This time it's folk-pop singing filtered with a lot of electronic effects They show up from the very first track but reach their pinacle in the album's best one, filled with expression and power, title kOsmik.

Czego azerski artysta się dotknie to zmienia w złoto. Violet Cold, czyli Emin Gulijew, rok temu stworzył epickie, trzy albumowe dzieło Sommermorgen, a teraz idzie za ciosem i pokazuje nowy, co najmniej tak samo dobry, krążek kOsmik. 

O ile tryptyk Sommermorgen polem do eksperymentalnych popisów dla Gulijewa, o tyle teraz wraca on na ścieżki z których jest znany szerszej publiczności: ogłuszające gitary i dodające kosmicznej atmosfery syntezatory i sample sączące się w uszy słuchaczy gęstą, potężną falą. Do blackgaze'owego klimatu dokładają się też wściekłe growle, których nie mogło zabraknąć na płycie Azera.

Mimo to wciąż można znaleźć w muzyce Violet Cold oryginalne tropy. Tym razem są to folkowo-popowe zaśpiewy przefiltrowane przez sporo elektroniki. Pojawiają się one od pierwszego kawałka ale swój szczyt osiągają w najlepszym na krążku, pełnym ekspresji i mocy tytułowym kOsmik.
