It's another Australian shoegaze'ish band on the blog this week. This time, it's Syrup, Go On from the Gold Coast and on their new album Last Light they show the genre's energetic and even danceable version.
As they state, the dark and lighter elements go together in their music, as "despite desolate themes, optimism is always a layer away". The latter is very much thanks to the energetic female vocalist whose voice is almost like a punk version of bedroom pop vocal with as much Sun as nostalgia in it.
The latter is the dominion of the lyrics, often (as in the brilliant Don't Go (Riding Down the Cosmic Drain)) about leaving and passing away. Still, the band manage to make the track probably the most melodic and catchy tune on the album. Exactly this ability to transform more or less dark emotions into light-hearted sounding and very catchy music is the main thing about the Australians.
Last Light costs 7 AUD.
