The Nancy Downs - The Nancy Downs (2020) EN

The Nancy Downs makes a rather mysterious project from Illinois, one you can find almost nothing about, also because its name refers to a popular movie The Craft. But mysterious here is also the music from  the new album, the music that within the charming dream pop frames smuggles a lot of fresh solutions.

First of all, almost everything here is either vocals or sounds derived from vocals. This results in absolutely mesmerizing, whispering backgrounds that suck the audience deeper and deeper every second. They're made of single phrases as in The Hour and Take My Scars or short, simple stanzas as in Sisters. It's slightly similar to my favourite song of 2017, 12 Decembers' Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl. But more and more. This all is provided with form by beats and drums as well as electric guitar sounds. But they play absolutely secondary roles here and in a very minimalist/DYI form. The album shows how a great idea can elevate a home-made album to quite another level. The tracks are pretty short and perhaps this is the space for improvement as I'd love to drown in the artist's sighs for longer.

The Nancy Downs to raczej tajemniczy projekt z Illinois, taki, o którym w sieci nie da się znaleźć prawie nic, także dlatego, że nazwę czerpie z popularnego filmu Szkoła czarownic. Ale tajemnicza jest również muzyka z najnowszej płyty artystki, muzyka, która w ramach urokliwego dream popu wprowadza wiele świeżych rozwiązań.

Przede wszystkim, prawie wszystko w niej jest wokalem albo dźwiękami z wokalu wyprowadzonymi. Efektem są absolutnie hipnotyzujące, szepczące tła wciągające słuchacza coraz głębiej i głębiej. Czy to pojedynczymi frazami w The Hour i Take My Scars czy krótkimi, prostymi zwrotkami w Sisters. Trochę przypomina mi to mój ulubiony kawałek 2017 Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl od 12 Decembers. Tylko więcej i bardziej. Do tego w formę ubierają tę muzykę bity i perkusje a także dźwięki gitary elektrycznej. Jednak są one absolutnie na drugim planie i w bardzo minimalistycznej /DYI formie. Ta płyta pokazuje, że znakomity pomysł może wynieść domowej roboty płytę na całkiem inny poziom. Kawałki są na ogół krótkie i tutaj poszukałbym pola do poprawy, aż chciałoby się zatonąć w westchnieniach artystki na dłużej.

Pure Phasers - Push (2020) EN

Pure Phasers is a Russian shoegaze-space rock collective that releases music since 2016 when their first demo saw the light of the day. Now it's time fot another EP from them, one that will surely not allow them run away from comparisons with the genre's legends like, mostly, Spiritualized.

Indeed, even the visual side of the release make me think of the Rugby's supergroup's clinically cold album covers. But it's obviously not everything, the short EP gives us a solid dose of great music that audibly references the classic space rock. So we have here dispersed, very unclear vocals and avant-garde, non-obvious compositions (like Time, track based on one word). Then there are complex, multi-layered music arrangements based on guitars that, even when not very loud as in the ballad-like Touch the Sky, still dominate the Russians' music.

And, of course, the whole album is soaked with the outstanding, old-school vibes that make me think of Spiritualized so much that I find it shocking that it's something new and something from the East. The band released an LP earlier this year and I have to catch up with it soon.

Pure Phasers - Push (2020) PL

Pure Phasers to rosyjski shoegaze'owo-space rockowy kolektyw, który wydaje muzykę od czterech lat, kiedy to ukazało się ich pierwsze demo. Teraz przyszedł czas na kolejną EP-kę, Push, po której na pewno nie uda im się uciec od porównań z legendami gatunku na czele ze Spiritualized.

Wszak nawet oprawa graficzna wywołuje skojarzenia z chłodnymi, klinicznymi okładkami supergrupy z Rugby. Ale to oczywiście nie wszystko, niedługa EP-ka oferuje kawał znakomitej muzyki nawiązującej brzmieniem do klasycznego space rocka. Mamy więc rozmyty, bardzo nieczytelny wokal i awangardowo nieoczywiste kompozycje (chociażby opierający się na jednym słowie Time). Do tego skomplikowane, pełne warstw muzyczne aranżacje oparte oczywiście na gitarach, które, nawet gdy nie są specjalnie głośne jak w balladowej Touch the Sky, wciąż dominują muzykę Rosjan.

No i nad całym albumem unosi się bardzo wyraźny, old-schoolowy duch, tak bardzo pasujący mi do Spiritualized, że trudno mi uwierzyć, że to coś nowego i ze wschodu. Zespół na początku tego roku wydał zresztą cały album długogrający i koniecznie trzeba go nadrobić.

Uniforms - Fantasía moral (2020) EN

I'm so happy that the Spanish band Uniforms I posted about when they debuted in 2018, their newest album released within a label that also appears on the blog very frequently - in the English Shore Dive Records. And I bet they know that Fantasía moral was absolutely worth it.

The label's specialty is releasing psychedelia and shoegaze so they hit the bull's eye. The band from the South of Europe are really able to generate some pretty noise, one of which all of the shoegaze legends could be proud, and they put some ethereal vocals on top of that. Top class. But also, they could smuggle tons of melodies there, probably because in the all-female band, the potential for airy vocals must definitely be higher. But it's also the case of compositions - it's noisy where it should be and melodic as well.

I don't know which song made the biggest impression on me, the album is super well-balanced. Semena Satan is a fantastic opener (and a play on words as if I understand it correctly, they made the Easter's Great Friday into Great you know who), Serena shows all the band's strong sides while in One Hit Wonder (Cheni's Song) they show some female punk movements claws. And the ubershoegaze finish in Lungs! Great job.

Uniforms - Fantasía moral (2020) PL

Bardzo mnie cieszy, że Hiszpanki z Uniforms, o których pisałem, gdy debiutowały w 2018 roku, swój najnowszy album wydały w labelu, który też wyjątkowo często pojawia się na blogu - angielskim Shore Dive Records. A ci na pewno już wiedzą, ze Fantasía moral była tego zdecydowanie warta.

Label specjalizujący się w wydawaniu psychodelii i shoegaze'u trafił moim zdaniem idealnie. Zespół z południa Europy potrafi wygenerować piękny gitarowy hałas, z którego wszystkie shoegaze'owe legendy byłyby dumne, a na jego tle umieścić eteryczne wokale. Klasa. Ale do tego udaje przemycić się całkiem sporo melodii, pewnie dlatego, że w ściśle kobiecym zespole potencjał eterycznego wokalu siłą rzeczy jest wyższy. Natomiast to tez kwestia kompozycji - hałas jest tam, gdzie powinien być, eteryczna melodia także.

Sam nie wiem, która piosenka tego niezwykle wyrównanego albumu mogłaby być przeze mnie wyróżniona. Semena Satan jest znakomitym otwarciem (oraz grą słów bo jeśli rozumiem dobrze to z wielkanocnego Wielkiego Tygodnia robi Wielkiego wiadomo kogo), wszystkie zalety zespół potwierdza też w Serenie, a w One Hit Wonder (Cheni's Song) pokazuje pazury godne kobiecych ruchów punkowych. No i to ubershoegaze'owe zakończenie w Lungs! Dobra robota.

Evacigana - Fortuna (2020) EN

Evacigana is a quartet hailing from Cadaval, a town close to Lisboa. The Portuguese make atmospheric and eclectic indie rock what they just showed on their second EP called Fortuna.

On one hand, it's definitely guitar music, sometimes lee sometimes more noisy. But it's always the guitar strings that carry the melodies. But besides this, it's less traditional. The rock compositions have the souls sown from slowcore, dream pop and art rock. Perhaps the latter makes the best genre here as what counts here the most is the artistic taste and when guitars are not enough, they are helped by jazzy trumpets and so on. This is how the whole album looks, it's a pity it's so short though as the charming,jazzy noise in Tempo Morto  makes already the half of the whole thing and you'd want to listen to more than three tracks.

Evacigana - Fortuna (2020) PL

Evacigana to kwartet z położonego niedaleko Lizbony Cadaval. Portugalczycy grają klimatyczny i eklektyczny indie rock, co pokazali właśnie na swojej drugiej EP-ce zatytułowanej Fortuna.

Z jednej strony bezsprzecznie jest to muzyka gitarowa, czasem mniej, czasem bardziej głośna. Ale zawsze to na gitarowych strunach ciąży odpowiedzialność za melodie. Poza tym jest jednak mniej tradycyjnie. Rockowe kompozycje mają bowiem dusze zszyte ze slowcore'u, dream popu i art rocka. Chyba właśnie to ostatnie jest dominujące bo wyjątkowo liczą się wrażenia artystyczne, a gdy gitary do tego nie wystarczą pojawiają się jazzujące instrumenty dęte. Tak wygląda cała płyta, szkoda tylko, że jest ona taka krótka bo urokliwy, jazzujący hałas w Tempo Morto  to już jej połowa, a chciałoby się posłuchać więcej niż trzy kawałki.

Grzegorz Bojanek - Lines (2020) EN

It's been a while since Grzegorz Bojanek was on this blog and since 2017 he managed to releas at least two albums. I'm coming back to his music with the release of a new EP as there's everything I associate his music with there.

Namely, a lot of industrial, not super quiet ambient and electronic sounds. In the EP's tracks it's the bass beats that rule the space, ones that tower over the electronics and samples like cliffs over a sea. Between and around them, there's a complex, multithreaded electronic music enriched with field recordings and a lot of the industrial, factory-like atmosphere. And also melodies as a song like Spectral Line simply begs for a couple of dance moves. It has to be stated though, that besides that, the music on the album is rather dark and not very optimist but perhaps it's just my feelings.

Grzegorz Bojanek - Lines (2020) PL

Dawno nie było Grzegorza Bojanka na blogu, a przecież od 2017 roku wydał on co najmniej dwa albumy. Wracam do niego za sprawą nowej EP-ki Lines bo jest na niej wszystko z czym się kojarzy jego muzyka.

A mianowicie dużo industrialnego i nieprzesadnie cichego ambientu i elektroniki. W utworach na EP-ce królują basowe bity, które wybijają się na tle elektroniki i sampli niczym klify ponad morską taflą. Pomiędzy nimi rozprzestrzenia się skomplikowana, wielowątkowa elektronika wzbogacona o field recordings i dużo industrialnej, fabrycznej atmosfery. Oraz melodii bo takie Spectral Line prosi się wręcz na swój sposób o kilka tanecznych ruchów. Trzeba jednak podkreślić, że mimo to muzyka na płycie jest raczej mroczna i raczej nie zachęca do optymizmu, ale być może to tylko moje wrażenie.

Voyage in Solitude - Through the Mist with Courage and Sorrow (2020) EN

Derrick Lin is back on my blog with his project Voyage in Solitude after two years with his new album called Through the Mist with Courage and Sorrow. As always, he invites his audience to the loud and dark world of solo post-metal and a visit like this is always pure joy.

His project is devoted to expressing the feelings of "loneliness, helplessness, frustration of people in the city (he is) living in". However, on the new album, there's a lot of sounds suggesting some hope and its elevated nature as well as courage that is even mentioned in the album's title. It's well audible in Dark Mist, a track with some ecstatic guitars and strings and with depression-filled vocals. Still, the album is ruled by post-metal sounds - raw and dark guitars, automatic drums, this whole metal aggressive vibe toned down and slightly covered by the ethereal.

Another thing are samples with spoken word in the mesmerizing Incoming Transmission, absolutely tear-jerking noise in Memories or the album's finish in almost a ballad-like In Between. A lot of good stuff here and by good I mean beautifully noisy.

Voyage in Solitude - Through the Mist with Courage and Sorrow (2020) PL

Derrick Lin i jego projekt Voyage in Solitude wraca po dwóch latach na mojego bloga wraz z nową płytą Through the Mist with Courage and Sorrow. Jak zawsze zaprasza on na niej do głośnego i mrocznego świata solowego post-metalu, a taka wizyta to zawsze przyjemność.

Jego projekt poświęcony jest przekazywaniu poczucia "samotności, niemocy i frustracji ludzi z miast, w którym żyje". Niemniej na nowym krążku dużo jest dźwięków świadczących raczej o nadziei i jej podniosłej naturze, a także o odwadze, o której pisze w tytule. Słychać to dobrze w Dark Mist, utworze z uskrzydlającymi gitarami i smyczkami i depresyjnym w brzmieniu wokalu. Niemniej na płycie królują post-metalowe dźwięki - surowe i mroczne gitary, automatyczna perkusja, cały ten metalowo agresywny vibe stonowany nieco i przysłonięty eterycznością.

Inną sprawą są sample z mówionym wokalem w hipnotyzującym Incoming Transmission albo wzruszający do cna hałas w Memories czy zamykająca album niemalże ballada In Between. Dużo dobrego, a przez dobrego mam na myśli pięknie hałaśliwego, na tej płycie.

I Am Waiting for You Last Summer - Self-Defense (2020) EN

The Russians of I Am Waiting for You Last Summer make one of the most noticeable examples of well-done combination of post-rock and extreme electronics. The extreme here are both the sensations and the noise generated by the musicians but also the atmosphere. Self-Defense is their fourth album and quite possible that the most impressive one.

Obviously what draws attention from the very beginning is the monumental vibe of this enterprise. The first notes of the intro are made of crushingly massive organs that swiftly turn into what fans already know, the band's electropost-rock. It's guitar-fueled and loud but, first of all, based on computer-generated sounds what adds to its fresh modernity but at the same time doesn't reduce the atmosphere. There's less of the mathrock-like chaos and more of this consistent noise with Tides of Nebula and others' vibes.

As it is in the rapid sounds of In Circles, Faux Pas or very cinematic Boiling Point. A track that draws attention is, certainly, also Je Me Demande, very different form the rest of the album ballad with the vocals of the Saint-Petersburg-based artist Gdeto thanks to which, the track sounds absolutely dream pop-like. At least up to a point. The album is meant as a "metaphor for the struggle with the outside world and with oneself", no wonder that the artists add that this is their most emotional and expressive work. We owe it to the world of today.

Rosjanie z I Am Waiting for You Last Summer to jeden z najjaskrawszych przykładów udanego połączenia post-rocka z ekstremalną elektroniką. Ekstremalne są tutaj wrażenia i hałas generowany przez muzyków ale też atmosfera. Self-Defense to czwarta płyta zespołu i możliwe, ze najbardziej efektowna.

Z pewnością to, co od początku rzuca się w uszy to monumentalność tego przedsięwzięcia. Pierwsze nuty intra to przygniatające dźwięki organów, które potem przechodzą w znany już fanom electropost-rock. Jest on gitarowo głośny ale przede wszystkim w dużej mierze oparty na dźwiękach generowanych przez komputer co dodaje mu odświeżającej nowoczesności a jednocześnie nie wpływa na atmosferę. Mniej jest tutaj chaosu mathrocka, a więcej właśnie konsekwentnego hałasu spod znaku Tides from Nebula i innych.

Tak jak w szalejącym gwałtownymi dźwiękami In Circles, Faux Pas czy kinowym wręcz Boiling Point. Z pewnością uwagę zwraca też Je Me Demande, zupełnie inna w brzmieniu ballada z wokalem petersburskiej artystki Gdeto dzięki której kawałek brzmi zupełnie dreampopowo, przynajmniej do czasu. Album ten jest w zamierzeniu "metaforą potykania się z zewnętrznym światem i samym sobą", nic dziwnego, że artyści dodają, ze to ich najbardziej emocjonalna i ekspresyjna płyta, zawdzięczamy to temu jak ten świat dziś wygląda.

Threestepstotheocean - Del fuoco (2020) EN

Threestepstotheocean is a band that debuted a while ago, their first album was released in 2007. Now the post-rockers out of Milan showed their fifth, but also the longest as it seems, release called Del fuoco.

The title in Italian means "fire" and surely the album doesn't lack fire anywhere. During the whole time it goes, there's this under-skin tension transmitted by the guitar music of the band. Sometimes it appears as nervous, pulsating bass line sometimes by the airy backing vocals. That's a lot of diverse sounds, although the Italians' music is strictly based on guitars still being quite eclectic, both in the ideas and the way they are executed.

No wonder that the musicians admit to being inspired but a real mixture of genres saying that the album "moves freely across the borders of instrumental rock, gathering elements from metal and post-rock, blending them with psychedelia e world influences". A word has to be devoted to the track called Dispersi in which the tension I mentioned is even more noticeable also thanks to the samples skillfully added to the music, samples of something that sounds like protest chanting. Sounds unbelievable.

Threestepstotheocean - Del fuoco (2020) PL

Threestepstotheocean to zespół, który debiutował już bardzo dawno, ich pierwsza płyta wyszła w 2007 roku. Teraz post-rockowcy z Mediolanu pokazali już piąte, za to najdłuższe jak mi się wydaje, wydawnictwo zatytułowane Del fuoco.

Tytuł po włosku oznacza ogień i tego ognia na krążku nie brakuje. Przez cały czas jego trwania, wyczuwa się podskórnie napięcie transmitowane przez gitarową muzykę zespołu. Czasem odpowiedzialne są za to pulsujące linie basu, czasem dodające nieco eteryczności chórki. Sporo tego, mimo że całość muzyki Włochów opiera się bez wątpienia na gitarach to wciąż jest ona bardzo urozmaicona, zarówno jeśli chodzi o pomysły jak i ich wykonanie.

Nic dziwnego, że sami artyści przyznają się do inspiracji prawdziwą mieszanką stylów, sami piszą, że ich płyta "porusza się między granicami instrumentalnego rocka łącząc elementy metalu i post-rocka i mieszając je z psychodelią i muzyką świata". Osobno słowo należy się kawałkowi Dispersi, który napięcie, o którym pisałem na początku, podsyca do niezwykłego poziomu, również za pomocą umiejętnie włączonych do muzyki sampli z czegoś, co brzmi jak skandowanie w czasie protestu. Brzmi to niesamowicie.

Mint Field - Sentimiento Mundial (2020) EN

Mint Field is a Mexican band we remember from their exciting debut Pasar de las Luces two years ago. This autumn, they are back with a solid, dream pop atmosphere- and shoegaze noise-filled followup in Sentimiento Mundial.

First thing that draws the listener's attention on the album are Estrella del Sol's vocals that combine dream pop mystery with almost theatrically pumped up emotions. It makes the impression of a mesmerizing dream full of warm but also sad feelings that go straight to the listener even if they don't speak Spanish. The vocals sound on the background that do not claim the leading role in this music and are rather dream pop supplements but from time to time can surprisingly burst out with some raw noise (as in Natural or Aterrizar).

The band claim that the album "explores the nostalgia and the melancholy of the daily life with loud guitars and vocals that give life to a unique and supernatural shoegaze". And this quest for finding inspiration and sadness in the every day reality really speaks to me and I feel it with my entire self.

Mint Field - Sentimiento Mundial (2020) PL

Mint Field to meksykański zespół, który pamiętamy z ekscytującego debiutu Pasar de las Luces sprzed dwóch lat. Tej jesieni zespół poszedł za ciosem i wydał solidną, wypełnioną dreampopowymi klimatami i shoegaze'ujacym noise'em kontynuację w Sentimiento Mundial.

Pierwszym, co rzuca się na płycie w uszy są niezwykłe wokale Estrelli del Sol, łączą one w sobie dreampopową tajemniczą eteryczność z niemal teatralnie podkręconymi emocjami. Sprawia to wrażenie hipnotyzującego snu pełnego ciepłych ale też smutnych uczuć, które trafiają do odbiorcy nawet jeśli nie mówi po hiszpańsku. Wybrzmiewają one na tłach, które na ogół nie zawłaszczają sobie głównej roli i są dreampopowymi dopełniaczami, natomiast od czasu do czasu potrafią przyciągnąć uwagę nieoczekiwanie surowymi noisem (jak w Natural czy Aterrizar).

Zespół przyznaje, że album "eksploruje nostalgię i melancholię codziennego życia za pomocą głośnych gitar i wokali, które rodzą unikalny i nadprzyrodzony shoegaze". To szukanie inspiracji i smutku w codzienności nadzwyczaj do mnie przemawia i czuję to całym sobą.

YODOK III - A Dreamer Ascends (2020) EN

One thing is certain, the members of the Norwegian YODOK III know their own value, on their Bandcamp we can read about "three fine exponents of modern, forward-thinking and experimental music" who while working together, transgressed their own borders. Nicely said, the most important thing though is that said collaboration results in good music, like the one on their last album called A Dreamer Ascends.

It has this unique atmosphere of concert improvisation and this is its great strength. So we have here some ambient introductions, jazzy fragments and eventually loud, post-rock finales. The interesting sound is probably achieved greatly by the instruments with amplified tuba and flugabone. The two tracks are very long but also extremely engaging. That said, it's a pity they end in this weird way which kind of prevents the full immersion. Still, a solid dose of music for those of us who long for live gig experience.

Jedno jest pewne, członkowie norweskiego YODOK III znają swoją wartość, na ich bandcampie czytamy o "three fine exponents of modern, forward-thinking and experimental music", którzy pracując razem przekraczali swoje kolejne granice. Ładnie powiedziane, najważniejsze jednak, ze współpraca ta owocuje dobrą muzyką, taką jak ta na ich kolejne płycie A Dreamer Ascends.

Ma ona tę niepowtarzalną atmosferę koncertowej improwizacji i w tym leży siła tria. Mamy więc i ambientowe wprowadzenia i jazzujące fragmenty i w końcu głośne, bardzo post-rockowe finały. Ciekawe brzmienie to pewnie też zasługa instrumentów, zwłaszcza wzmacniana tuba i puzon. Dwa kawałki są bardzo długie ale też niezwykle wciągające, szkoda tylko, że kończą się w tak dziwny sposób, trochę to przeszkadza pełnemu zanurzeniu w klimat. Tak czy inaczej - solidna dawka muzyki dla spragnionych koncertowych wrażeń.

Spook the Horses - Empty Body (2020) PL

Nowozelandzki kolektyw Spook the Horses (swoją drogą, co to za nazwa dla właściwie Rohańczyków!) ma na koncie już kilka albumów i wydaje się, ze całkiem solidne grono fanów, w tym roku dokładają do tego album numer cztery zatytułowany Empty Body, który z całą pewnością wymiata.

Tak się składa, że to będzie drugi, obok ukraińskiego Nug, zespół, o którym piszę w ostatnich dniach, a który gra podobną muzykę - przytłaczający post-metal okraszony krzykliwym, działającym na wyobraźnię wokalem. Gdy sami o sobie piszą używają takich tagów jak "post-metal, drone, experimental rock, ambient i thrash". I tak, muzycznie rozpościerają się przez całe spektrum około-metalowe: mamy tu zarówno bardzo riffujące fragmenty jak i te bardziej klimatyczne, a czasem nawet czysto noise'owe (świetny efekt w Counting Days on Bone).

Bardzo mi imponują najdłuższy kawałek, fantastycznie przytłaczające Apology Rot, to zawsze sztuka nie zakrzyczeć i nie znudzić odbiorców, a artystom z Oceanii się to udaje. Inną sprawą są emocje tak dobrze i sugestywnie oddawane przez Calluma Gaya, które rozpościerają się od czystej agresji po nihilistyczną desperację. Ładunek emocjonalny i jakość muzyki stawiają tę płytę na najwyższej półce.

Spook the Horses - Empty Body (2020) EN

New Zealand-based collective Spook the Horses (btw, what a name for the Rohirrims!) have created a bunch of albums and it seems that they manage to gather a solid fanbase, this year they add the fourth album to their discography, a stunning one one called Empty Body.

So it happened that this is going to be the second, after the Ukrainian Nug, band I post about and that makes a similar music - overwhelming post-metal spiced with screaming, imagination-fueling vocals. When they describe their music, they use tags like "post-metal, drone, experimental rock, ambient music and thrash". And indeed they cover a vast spectrum of metal music: we deal with more riff-based fragments and those more atmospheric and even purely noise-like (resulting in fantastic Counting Days on Bone).

I'm astonished by the longest track, fantastically crushing Apology Rot as it's never easy not to over use the screaming or bore audience to death but the Oceania artists did well here. Another thing is how well Callum Gay's vocals express emotions ranging from pure aggression to nihilistic depression. The emotional charge and the music's quality make the album stand out this year.

Never - We Will Collide (2020) EN

Never, one of many projects of this name and definitely the freshest one, is a band out from Brooklyn, that makes a very airy and blues-like dream pop. They debuted in September with an EP called We Will Collide and it was one hell of a debut.

The album is opened by their first single Sunken Wreck that is a peaceful, slow, pouring like magma ballad in which the vocals sound super blues-rock like or maybe even towards Americana, while the music background makes an airy, filled with backing vocals top-shelf dream pop. And this is how you could define the whole album. Dreamy atmosphere, breaking hearts in the lyrics and, as a result, bitter-sweet beauty. I'm very curious about the Americans' career in the future.

Never, jeden z wielu projektów o tej nazwie i zdecydowanie najnowszy, to zespół z Brooklynu, który gra bardzo eteryczny i bleusowy dream pop. Zadebiutowali we wrześniu EP-ką We Will Collide i to się nazywa dobry debiut.

Płytę otwiera ich pierwszy singiel Sunken Wreck będący spokojną, niespieszną, snującą się jak płynąca magma balladą, w której wokale brzmią bardzo blues-rockowo czy też nawet w stronę Americany, podczas gdy muzyczne tło to eteryczny, przepełniony chórkami, najwyższej jakości dream pop. I tak można zdefiniować całą krótką płytę. Senna atmosfera, pękające serca w słowach i wynikające z tego słodko-gorzkie piękno. Bardzo ciekawi mnie dalsza kariera Amerykanów.

I Hear Sirens - Stella Mori (2020) EN

As it is suggested by the people of dunk!records, and nobody knows it better than them, I Hear Sirens from Utah is one of the bands that was directly involved in the post-rock evolution and made their part when "once fringe experimental form transitioned into a recognized faction of contemporary alternative music". Now the quartet released their... only third album called Stella Mori.

It's been over a decade since they debuted and the Americans managed to get a lot of fans in meantime but their discography lacked this opus magnum of sorts. Perhaps this is it, perhaps this album will be remembered as one. It is Characterized by the dark colour and unbelievable quality of sound. The guitars are soaked with darkenss and weight, although really loud gets pretty late with Ad Caelum. And dark, have I mentioned that? I can't stress this enough, how dark IHS's music is and it's done with almost only guitars with symbolic traces of other effects.

They can only a make the atmosphere a tiny bit brighter, just like it is with the keys but still, they seem to be like single stars with all the pitch-black space around them.The whole album makes an almost perfect template fot the modern post-rock music. The artists also don't shy from the most impressive part of the genre: built-up tension and spectacular finishes, the thing we can experience in Burden of Memory and, first of all, in the fantastic ending of the album in Stella Mori.

I Hear Sirens - Stella Mori (2020) PL

Jak zapewniają ludzie z dunk!records, a nikt na tym nie zna się bardziej niż oni, I Hear Sirens z Utah to jeden z tych zespołów, które bezpośrednio uczestniczyły w ewolucji post-rocka i działał kiedy "niegdysiejsza eksperymentalna forma przeistoczyła się w uznawaną część współczesnej muzyki alternatywnej". Teraz kwartet wydał swój... dopiero trzeci krążek zatytułowany Stella Mori.

Od ich debiutu minęła już ponad dekada i Amerykanie dorobili się rzeszy fanów, ale w ich twórczości brakowało tej kropki nad i, swoistego opus magnum. Być może to tegoroczna płyta zostanie tak zapamiętana. Charakteryzuje ją mroczna barwa i krystaliczna jakość dźwięku. Gitary są przeniknięte mrokiem i ciężarem chociaż dopiero z czasem, w Ad Caelum, robi się naprawdę głośno. I mrocznie, nie mogę wyjść z podziwu nad tym jak mrocznie brzmi muzyka IHS chociaż wszystko jest zasługą gitar, nie ma tu prawie żadnych dodatków.

Te co najwyżej rozjaśniają nieco klimat tak jak klawisze, które jednak zdają się być jak pojedyncze gwiazdy w całkowicie czarnej przestrzeni. Cały album to praktycznie model idealny dla współczesnego post-rockowego grania. Muzycy nie uciekają też od najbardziej efektownej strony gatunku, budowanego napięcia i spektakularnego finale, których doświadczamy w Burden of Memory i, przede wszystkim, w fantastycznym finale krążka w tytułowym Stella Mori.

Nug - Alter Ego (2020) EN

The Ukrainian band with a name taken from the Cthulhu myths, Nug, make this year's debutantes when it comes to long plays. Their Alter Ego was released back in August and inspired me with dark and striking post-metal.

The band offer dense, guitar backgrounds that make it almost impossible for anything to show through. Sometimes they sound very doom metal-like, sometimes like inspired by other sub-genres but most importantly, there's a lot of heavy and dark post-metal in them, the one that crushes with the weight more likely than tearing apart with aggression. But it's quite the opposite with the husky, screaming vocals that in songs such as Psyche brings awe with the direct influence on the audience.

Together they make this unique combination that doesn't do everything to be the fastest music in the world but rather focuses on the atmosphere generation on one hand and casting violent notes with the accuracy and power of an express train on the other. What's more, and this is something I love, they like using bits of sudden silence which, for example in Eleven turns out to be even more striking than the loudest of guitars. Perfect from start to finish.

Nug - Alter Ego (2020) PL

Ukraiński zespół, którego nazwa wywodzi się z mitów cthulhu, Nug, to tegoroczni debiutanci jeśli chodzi o płyty długogrające. Ich Alter Ego ukazało się w sierpniu i zachwyciło mnie mrocznym i bardzo dobitnym post-metalem.

Grupa oferuje gęste, gitarowe tła, zza których niewiele ma szans się przebić. Czasem brzmią one bardzo doom metalowo, czasem jakby czerpały z innych podgatunków, jednak głównie mają w sobie dużo z ciężkiego i mrocznego post-metalu, który bardziej przygniata swoim ciężarem niż rozrywa agresją. Zupełnie inaczej jest z chrapliwym, krzykliwym wokalem, który w takich kawałkach jak Psyche zachwyca bezpośredniością i wpływem na odbiorcę. 

Razem tworzą niezwykła mieszankę, która niby nie robi wszystkiego by być najszybszą muzyką świata a raczej skupia się na generowaniu atmosfery, z drugiej miota agresywnymi nutami z celnością i siłą pociągu ekspresowego. W dodatku, co ja sobie bardzo cenię, lubią używać nagłej ciszy, co w takich kawałkach jak Eleven tworzy efekt bardziej piorunujący niż najgłośniejsze gitary. Znakomite od pierwszego do ostatniego dźwięku.

[.que] - And Inside (2020) EN

Nao Kakimoto, known as [que.] is a Japanese artist who within the sound in silence label released the second album after Wonderland from 2017 at the beginning of the last summer. Besides that, he's done many other ones, longer, shorter, ad music and whatever you can imagine. Time to make up with the album and have a listen.

His music makes an exceptionally airy approach to electronic sounds slightly livelier than ambient but still similarly atmospheric. The album begins with the piano keys-based intro but we are quickly moved to electronically enriched (both with beats and some more experimental sounds) haze and further, towards the optimist sounds of sepia. Eventually the piano keys are back in the most serious track divagate but at this point, everything is possible as the album turns into absolutely diverse and eclectic blend with electric guitar, violins, back vocals. There's pretty much everything on this album.

Nao Kakimoto, znany jako [que.] to artysta z Japonii, który w ramach label sound in silence wydał drugi po albumie Wonderland z 2017 roku krążek na początku lata. Poza tym ma na koncie wiele innych, dłuższych, krótszych, muzykę do reklam i wszystkiego, co można sobie wymyślić. Czas nadrobić zaległości i przesłuchać go z wypiekami na twarzy.

Jego muzyka to nadzwyczaj eteryczne podejście do elektroniki nieco żwawszej od ambientu ale wciąż podobnie klimatycznej. Płyta zaczyna się klawiszowym intro, ale dość szybko trafiamy do najeżonego elektroniką (zarówno bitami jak i bardziej eksperymentalnymi dźwiękami) haze i dalej, ku optymistycznym dźwiękom sepii. W końcu wraca pianino w bardziej poważnym divagate, a później to już całkiem zróżnicowany i eklektyczny misz-masz z gitarą elektryczną, skrzypcami, chórkami. Na tej płycie jest wszystko.
