Ranges - Cardinal Winds (2021)

The Montana-based instrumental post-rock band caught my attention back in 2019 with the master-piece album Babel. I sort of had known they existed before, but it was only after their 4th album that I was sure they are one of the best artists within the genre. Now, with Cardinal Winds, the Americans want to remind us about this fact.

The title refers to the four directions of the world: North, South, East and West, as they were perceived by the Ancient Greeks. And so do some of the track titles while other ones suggesting some epic journey that takes place somewhere within those "cardinal winds". It all seems to be deriving inspirations from the Ancient epics like The Iliad and so there's little surprise that the guitar music here is definitely accordingly majestic and epic. The instruments sound like mountain ranges (sic!) or waves on a stromy sea - there's a lot going on with the loud and huge sounds for some time only to go low and quiet for a change eventually. I remember Babel as more massive, more audience-crushing while the new album shows a lot of melodies and complex compositions with everything a good post-rock release requires. Also, Deluge is going to be one of the post-rock highlights of the year.

The American Ranges are with us for some time already and they managed to made a name of one of the best offstream instrumental rock bands. They released such awesome albums as The Ascensionist and achieved things like performing on the main stage of dunk!festival. And no they took another step of their career with the new album called Babel.

The band's class comes from the quality of the guitar sound they produce. On the one hand, it's not bland and plastic-like, on the other they don't murder the melodic side of it. The Americans make the guitars sound dark, monumental and crushingly beautiful in every track. But they can also be somewhat chaotically peaceful, as in the melancholic Babylon the Great, Pt. 3 that in a perfect way transforms into the fantastically elevated Idolator. But the pinnacle of monumentalism they reach in Demagogue, a track relatively short but making its way into listeners' heart and minds rapidly and directly. The whole album should be looked into thoroughly as it constitutes a dark symphony ranging from the deep voids into sound mountains' peaks

Amerykanie z Ranges są z nami już od lat i przez ten czas wyrobili sobie markę jednej z najlepszych poza-mainstreamowych kapel z instrumentalnym rockiem. Zespół ma oczywiście za sobą tak genialne płyty jak The Ascensionist czy takie osiągnięcia jak główna scena na dunk!festivalu. A teraz zrobił kolejny krok w swojej karierze z nowym albumem Babel.

Kunszt zespołu polega na uzyskaniu takiego brzmienia gitar, które z jednej strony nie wydaje się mdłe i plastikowe, a z drugiej nie zabija melodyjności. U Amerykanów gitary są mroczne, potężne i wbijają w podłogę w każdym kawałku. Potrafią również być w pewien sposób chaotycznie spokojni jak w melancholijnym Babylon the Great, Pt. 3, który w znakomity sposób przechodzi w fantastycznie podniosły Idolator. Ale szczyty monumentalizmu osiągają w stosunkowo niedługim, za to wbijającym się w mózg i serce Demagogue. Zagłębić należy się w cały album bo od początku do końca jest stanowi on mroczną symfonię rozciągającą się od głębokich otchłani po szczyty muzycznych gór.
