Mumrunner - Yearning Heart (2025)

I can hardly wrap my head around it, but it's already almost a decade since I discovered my favourite Finnish shoegazey-dream popey band through their brilliant Gentle Slopes EP. Time flies when you're not looking... Luckily the Tampere-based group still does their signature light but moody, melodic but airy take on the haziest of music genres.

I like how carefree and soft the music sounds. There's certainly some element of twee and lo-fi music in here, although probably in the spirit, not necessarily in the form because the album sounds well-developed and -made. Most of the time it's the melodies and the easy-listening vibes that matter, making the whole thing sounding like a younger sister of Pia Fraus. It's definitely not about the noisy element. But it doesn't mean that there are no disruptions. There are and they always catch attention, like the change of the tone in Violet or the sudden stop of Hawkeye.

Finally, the Finish hope of dream pop, Mumrunner from Tampere released their debut long play. Although they built their name already with the Gentle Slopes EP, it's only now that we can admire their admire to the Estonian Pia Fraus in a longer form on Valeriana.

The Scandinavians play unpretensious dream pop which means the melody and joy of twee pop juxtaposed with the airiness and guitar-saturation of shoegazing rock. So it's very atmospheric, which is greatly helped by the omnipresent backing vocals, but also pugnacious and charming. And very catchy, the band themselves suggest that this is their strongest side saying that they"have always been eager to write memorable melodies, and we are able to show even stronger and fuller melody lines".

Since their beginnings, the band's line-up changed a lot. And although my favourite song by Mumrunner still is the years old Gentle Slopes, it's bravely contested now by such hits as Foe, Easy Life, Transient or instrumental Valeriana. If the quarantine is ever going to end, they will be one of my main gigs to catch somewhere in Europe.

W końcu jest, fińska nadzieja dream popu, Mumrunner z Tampere nareszcie wydał swój debiutancki długogrający krążek. Chociaż swoją renomę zbudował już EP-ką Gentle Slopes, teraz możemy podziwiać ich odpowiedź na estońską Pia Fraus w dłuższej formie na płycie Valeriana.

Skandynawowie grają bezpretensjonalny dream pop, oznacza to melodyjność i radość z grania rodem z twee popu, zestawione z eterycznością i gitarowym nasyceniem shoegaze'ującego rocka. Jest więc niezwykle atmosferycznie, o co dbają niezliczone chórki, ale też zadziornie i ujmująco. No i przebojowo, sam zespół sugeruje, że to jest ich najsilniejszą bronią pisząc, że "zawsze byli skłonni pisać zapadające w pamięć melodie a teraz potrafią pokazać jeszcze mocniejsze i pełniejsze linie melodyczne".

Zespół od momentu, gdy zaistniał na scenie zmienił się personalnie Co prawda wciąż moim ulubionym kawałkiem jest Gentle Slopes sprzed lat, ale dzielnie walczą z nim takie piosenki jak Foe, Easy Life, Transient czy instrumentalna Valeriana. Jeśli kwarantanna kiedyś się skończy, Mumrunner będzie dla mnie jedną z głównych pozycji do przydybania na koncercie gdzieś w Europie.

Mumrunner - Gentle Slopes EP (2016) EN

Everyone has a place they revisit in their thought although there’s this painful certainty that they will never come back there. For me this place is Tampere, Finland - a city from which Kati, Sauli, Juuso and Jukka, or Mumrunner, come from. And since their shoegaze anthem “Gentle Slopes” from the EP with the same title matches this feeling completely, it is with me very often lately.

There’s a lot of ocean in this track and, although Tampere is not a coastal city, there’s a reason behind that. The city is located between two huge lakes which may make you feel that you’re on a lonely island somewhere in the middle of the ocean. And the smell and the view of Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi is very tangible in this swaying and melancholic song. “Face against the rain, unafraid it will wash away / ‘Cause your pretty face, in photos it will remain” - it’s definitely one of my favourites of this year. The songs before “gentle Slopes” are pop hits played on dirt and delicate vocals, sounding similar to The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart but I don’t think that the Americans would say that they’re inspired by “beer, low humor and b movies.

“The Tampere, Finland based band love to play loud but never forsake an interest in subtler dynamics”, they combine alternative rock with dreampop soundscapes and they do it so well that they became one of those Finnish bands that have to be closely looked into. And it may be possible since they’ll be playing in Berlin and Praha in January.

Każdy ma miejsce, do którego najbardziej lubi wracać myślami, mimo bolesnej świadomości, że nigdy się już do niego nie wróci. Dla mnie takim miejscem jest fińskie Tampere - miasto, z którego wywodzą się Kati, Sauli, Juuso i Jukka, czyli Mumrunner. A że ich shoegaze’owy hymn “Gentle Slopes” z tak samo zatytułowanej epki idealnie wpasowuje się w to uczucie, jest przy mnie ostatnio często.

Jest w nim dużo oceanu, ale to, mimo że Tampere nie leży na wybrzeżu, ma swoje uzasadnienie. Miasto położone jest między dwoma ogromnymi jeziorami, przez co można poczuć się jak na samotnej wyspie. A zapach i widok Näsijärvi i Pyhäjärvi czuje się w rozkołysanym i pełnym melancholii utworze. “Deszcz na twarzy / nie boję się, że ją zmyje / bo twoja piękna twarz na zdjęciach będzie trwać”. Utwory poprzedzające “Gentle Slopes” to popowe przeboje grane na brudzie i delikatnych wokalach przypominające nieco The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, ale nie przypuszczam by ci w swoich inspiracjach wymieniali “piwo, marny humor i filmy klasy B”.

“Finowie z Tampere kochają grać głośno ale nie zapominają o subtelniejszych dynamikach”, łączą alternatywny rock z dreampopowymi muzycznymi krajobrazami i robią to tak dobrze, że stają się jednym z tych fińskich zespołów, których należy obserwować. W styczniu zagrają całkiem niedaleko - w Pradze i w Berlinie.
