Vlimmer - IIIIIIII/IIIIIIIII (8 & 9) (2017) EN

Vlimmer doesn't need to be introduced to anyone who reads this blog on regular basis. Aparat from that he is a productive artist and how atmospheric everything he produces is, we all know that he likes surprising his audience and change his music. He has just released two EP-s and they are no exceptions.

The eighth EP is opened by a surprisingly aggressive wall of sound in "Beutenacht", that in time transforms into extremely climatic darkgaze with the artist's vocals that never disappoint. The diffused vocal and synth melodies are drowned in this vlimmerish gloomy mood and go on until the album ends. Sometimes they are interrupted though by some astounding attractions like for example oriental sound of keys in "Hirngespinst".

Meanwhile, the ninth album sounds as if Vlimmer had been listening to some elctropop and decided to record his impression on that topic. Dark compositions are lined with irregular beats and "Metropolo" is its peak as it sounds like a cold-wave disco with neons replaced by smoke penetrating white lasers.

Both parts together cost 5 EUR.

Vlimmer - IIIIIIII/IIIIIIIII (8 & 9) (2017) PL

Część ósma i dziewiąta razem kosztują 21 złotych (5 EUR).

Leonard Donat - Deer Traps (2017) EN

Leonard Donat is very well-known for everyone reading this blog. He has been a guest here for couple occasions as Vlimmer, alone and cooperating with other artists. This time though, he decided to remove his white mask and show his true face. The question is: why?

Donat gets rid of another of his characteristic elements - the funeral and otherworldly vocal. This time, his music reminds me more of foggy landscapes than pictures from the purgatory. No wonder the first track is entitled "Fog Horn Deer Trap". On the other hand, the pulsating keys hidden somewhere far in the background remind of the good, old Vlimmer.

I got goosebumps when the third track, "Alteglofsheim Night Pedal", started with its extremely subtle drone leading the way for the rest of the sounds sounds like barely noticeable night rain lulling everyone to sleep.

"Deer Traps" costs 4 EUR.

Leonard Donat - Deer Traps (2017) PL

Z drugiej strony ukryte gdzieś w dalekim tle pulsujące klawisze to stary, dobry Vlimmer.

Gęsią skórkę wywołał we mnie natomiast początek "Alteglofsheim Night Pedal", gdzie niesamowicie delikatny drone zapraszający za sobą resztę dźwięków brzmi jak ledwie słyszalny nocny deszcz kołyszący do snu.

"Deer Traps" kosztuje 17 złotych (4 EUR).

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) PL

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) EN

Vlimmer, our good musical friend from Germany, has just gotten involved into another fantastic collaboration. After cooperation with The Oceaneer, he became the partner of the Chilean producer Michel Leroy Valdés known as Thanatoloop, who makes his music already for over 20 years.

So the album was created on two different continents, probably in the virtual space between Germany and Chile, but still it sounds as if from the beginning to the end was all played in a long time abandoned gothic cathedral in complete darkness. Gloomy vocals in both German and Spanish, slow pace and the electronic music that is definitely closer to a cemetery than to a dance floor are the factors creating this unique atmosphere.

The album costs 7 USD.

Vlimmer with the hands of Oceaneer - Meerheit (2016) EN

Making a soul stirring music is only possible with new, shiny and perfectly tuned up instruments. Wrong! So wrong! Vlimmer's back! And he's not alone, this time he has a help of Oceaneer (pianist Oneechan Nanashi)'s hands and her broken piano for which being out of tune is a natural state. And there's Vlimmer himself with his funeral, rustling voice that sounds as if Nietzsche read Poe's works and grabbed a rusty microphone. Can you imagine anything more climatic? Or even... melodic? Try listening to "Pianist" without humming.

Album's title is, if I can trust my linguistic intuition, a sort of word play as German Mehrheit means "the biggest part" while Meer is "sea". Does it mean that the biggest part of our reality and life feels as if it took place underwater? (Press release says that this music sounds like "music from the bottom of the ocean, played by a ghost in a sunken pirate ship" - agreed, although I'm not sure how many pirates were German speaking in the course of history). Or perhaps that the majority of our time is spent doing nothing, feeling nothing, not being touch by anything and the real life passes away somewhere over the waves? ("stillness" is the word used in the press release mentioned) Or maybe just that the majority of our planet is covered by seas? Perhaps not. And we won't know it, I can say  just by looking at Vlimmer's mask.

"Meerheit" i available for pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp but it's strongly advisable to support the modern Goethe.

Vlimmer with the hands of Oceaneer - Meerheit (2016) PL

I to jaki! Vlimmer powraca! A nawet... melodyjnego?

Vlimmer - IIIII (2016) EN

German mix of post-punk and coldwave and to make things worse with lyrics in Goethe's language, that sounds... warm, nice and melancholic? Like cat, blanket and rain behind a window? Is it possible? Yes. Given that the cat is undead, the blanket covered with runes and the rain taps the funeral march. Vlimmer can combine the uncombinable thanks to adding some dark shoegaze atmosphere and deep darkwave vocal. And German in his mouth sounds indeed more like recitation of "Der Erlkönig" than Till Lindemann singing.

IIIII is, as you can guess, the fifth album of the Berlin-based artist. Underdog Fanzine described it as "a frightening occult spectacle of Berlin's underworld" and I can hardly disagree. If the vocal doesn't spook you, the sudden drone backgrounds or ambient pauses will.

The album is published by Blackjack Illuminist Records and costs 3 EUR.

Vlimmer - IIIII (2016) PL
