Na początku września wyszła niepowtarzalna płyta dwójki znakomitych artystów: lidera Her Name Is Calla, T E Morissa oraz fantastycznej współczesnej wiolonczelistki Jo Quail. Należało się spodziewać, że taka dawka talentu zaowocuje czymś wyjątkowym i tak właśnie się stało no For the Benefit of All to właśnie to.

Trochę zaskakująca jest tematyka albumu. Sci-fi, kosmos, eksploracja - to nie są tematy, które osobiście utożsamiałbym z żadnym z tych artystów. Tymczasem temat obecny jest i w tytułach (fantastyczne nawiązanie do łzawego pożegnania łazika Opportunity) i w samplach (już od pierwszego utworu na płycie) i w końcu w muzyce - mrocznej, futurystycznej i z łatwo wyczuwalnym kosmicznym vibem. Space ambient i bardzo, bardzo delikatne smyczki oraz klawisze definiują to wydawnictwo.

To właśnie elektronika jest na pierwszym planie tworząc przestrzenne, kosmiczne pejzaże a dopiero dość późno, w 2116 (The Settlers), nabiera wyraźniejszej formy. Smyczki natomiast odpowiadają za atmosferę, ale raczej taką groźną, smutną i ponurą niż tradycyjnie podniosłą. Podobnie rzecz ma się z klawiszami, które, chociaż piękne, brzmią równie złowróżbnie (zwłaszcza w świetnym 1610 (The Polymath from Pisa). Zresztą tytuły to materiał na osobną opowieść - wszystkie zawierają daty i wydarzenia związane z kosmosem tylko że większość z nich... dopiero nadejdzie. Znakomity pomysł.

In the beginning of September, a unique album was released, one created by two great artists Her Name Is Calla's T E Morris and fantastic cellist Jo Quail. It should've been anticipated that such an amount of talent would result in something special and so it happened as For the Benefit of All is just it.

The theme of the album is a bit surprising. Sci-fi, space, exploration - these are not what I would associate with neither of the artists. However, it is present everywhere, both in song titles (like in the fantastic reference to the tear-jerking last words of the Opportunity rover) in sample (from the album's very first track) and finally in the music - dark, futuristic, with hard-to-miss space vibes. Space ambient and very, very delicate strings and keys define this release.

It is the electronics that plays the main role, creating spacious, cosmic soundscapes and rather late turning the form into something louder (2116 (The Settlers)). Strings on the other hand are there for the atmosphere, one that's scary, sad and gloomy more than traditionally lofty. Similar thing with the keys that, although beautiful, sounds also threatening (especially in the brilliant 1610 (The Polymath from Pisa). Also, the titles themselves are worth talking about - all of them consist of years when something important for the space exploration happened or... will happen as most of them is situated in the future. Great idea.

Lessons from the Dreamtime - Seven Stars & Orion (2020) EN

Lessons from the Dreamtime is the stage alter ego of Jesse Maddox who in this ways tries to conduct an "experiment in neo-classical, post-industrial texture, studio manipulation, and world music". Its results are published on her fourth album since 2019 (!) called Seven Stars & Orion.

The album is supposed to "focus on distinct harmony and melody combined with a more approachable instrumentaton", its creation was aided by the work of multi-instrumentalist Thomas Rowell who broadened the instruments spectre and so the depth of the music itself. Those instruments appearing on the album include sad strings, touching piano keys and this whole neoclassical soul.

On the other hand, the album is also able to surprise with the deeply electronic composition powered by the heavy beats in Maia that make the turning point of the album towards the second half's space-ambient and dark electronic vibes while the two worlds collide in the epic Taygete and the finish in Orion. The album is impressive in its complexity and, above all, creates an attractive, cosmic atmosphere.

Lessons from the Dreamtime to pseudonim sceniczny Jesse Maddox, która w ten sposób postanowiła przeprowadzić "eksperyment na neoklasycznych, post-industrialnych teksturach, studyjnych manipulacjach i muzyce świata". Jego rezultaty pokazuje właśnie na swojej czwartej od 2018 roku (!) płycie Seven Stars & Orion.

Płyta ma na celu "skupienie się na wyrazistej harmonii i melodiach połączonych z bardziej dostępnym instrumentarium", do jej powstania swoje trzy grosze dołożył również multi-instrumentalista Thomas Rowell, który powiększył spektrum instrumentów używanych w ramach projektu i tym samym głębie samej muzyki. Te instrumenty, które pojawiają się na krążku to przede wszystkim rzewne smyczki, wyróżniające się klawisze pianina i cała ta neoklasyczna minimalistyczna dusza.

Z drugiej strony, album potrafi też zaskoczyć głęboko-elektroniczną kompozycją w napędzonej ciężkim bitem Maii, która znaczy punkt zwrotny albumu. Ten bowiem staje się w drugiej połowie kosmiczno-ambientowy i mroczno-elektroniczny, a dwa światy łączą się w epickim Taygete i zamykającym całość Orionie. Album imponuje w swojej złożoności, a przede wszystkim generuje atrakcyjną, kosmiczną atmosferę.

Two Demons - Momentum (2019) EN

Momentum is an album from Russia, that is filled with thick, oozing ambient sounds. The project responsible is called Two Demons and there's nothing about them in the Net, but it's no obstacle for enjoying this music.

The ambient offered by the Russian is made of overlaid ambient loops creating some thick, inscrutable and mesmerizing backgrounds on which there are elements appearing, like samples, voices, obstructions and sometimes even instruments like guitar or piano. And some trip-hop sounds. And some airy vocals (Momentum!). And still in this all-embracing space stew every one of those elements has a point.

Momentum to płyta z Rosji wypełniona po brzegi gęstym, sączącym się ambientem. Odpowiadający za nią projekt Two Demons jest zupełnie anonimowy w sieci, ale to nie przeszkadza cieszyć się ich muzyką.

Ambient proponowany przez Rosjanina to nawarstwiające się ambientowe loopy tworzące grube, nieprzeniknione i hipnotyzujące tło, na którym pojawiają się od czasu do czasu sample, głosy, zanieczyszczenia, a nawet instrumenty takie jak gitara czy pianino. A także kilka trip-hopowych dźwięków. I kilka eterycznych chórów (Momentum!). Niemniej we wszechogarniającej kosmicznej zupie to wszytko ma sens i cel.

Inner Silence - Luna (2018) EN

Lucas Vallim is a Brazilian composer and producent creating his music also as Inner Silence. And whatever is really inside him, it gets outside as neoclassical ambient with very distinct space flavour.

The musician is fascinated by "deep melodies, gentle sound soundscapes and atmospheric sounds". "Luna" shows just this. Written as musical impression of a space shuttle leaving Earth's atmosphere, the album does surprise from time to time with sounds reminding of the noise of engines ("Takeoff") or the air outside's. But between those, it is filled with beautiful keys and strings of guitar and violins. All this reminds me of the sense of awe after seeing our planet from the space point of view.

All the time during this orbital journey, we are accompanied by the atmosphere of melancholic sadness, as if we were sure we were not going back home.

Inner Silence - Luna (2018) PL

Lucas Vallim to brazylijski kompozytor i producent tworzący również jako Inner Silence. I cokolwiek ma faktycznie wewnątrz, na zewnątrz wydostaje się pod postacią neoklasycznego ambientu z bardzo wyraźnym kosmicznym posmakiem.

Muzyk fascynuje się "głębokimi melodiami, łagodnymi muzycznymi pejzażami i atmosferycznym brzmieniem". "Luna" właśnie je pokazuje. Napisana jako muzyczne przedstawienie statku kosmicznego opuszczającego ziemską atmosferę, płyta faktycznie co jakiś czas zaskakuje dźwiękami przypominającymi hałas silników ("Takeoff") albo pędu powietrza, jednak pomiędzy nimi wypełniona jest pięknymi klawiszami, strunami gitary i smyczkami przywodzącymi na myśl zachwyt po ujrzeniu Ziemi z perspektywy kosmosu. 

Przez cały czas towarzyszy nam w czasie tej orbitalnej podróży nastrój melancholijnego smutku, tak jakbyśmy byli pewni, że nie uda nam się wrócić do domu.

Matteo Ferrera - EVA (2018) EN

Matteo Ferrara is firstly producer and sound engineer. But in his spare time, he creates music for movies or at least sounding as if tit would fit a movie perfectly. This is exactly the case of his new album "EVA" that would make a great soundtrack for a space exploration oriented sci-fi.

The story as told by Ferrery begins with a "Letter From Nowhere", poetic spoken word that, although in Italian, has some clear references to the universe. It is confirmed by the sounds of the following tracks, starting in "Mission Start" with implemented backwards counting to the journey's beginning. It's the same for the rest of the album when the radio dialogs between astronauts appear and they do it accompanied not only by a space electronic music but also some post-rock guitars (as in "We're On TV") making me think of the phenomenal soundtrack for "Moon", the movie.

The tracks create a coherent story, sometimes very much unsettling, as in "Water" in which the Earth-based engineers try to help an astronaut in distress. The music here skillfully beats up the drama just like in the best space thrillers.

Matteo Ferrera - EVA (2018) PL

Matteo Ferrara jest przede wszystkim producentem i dźwiękowcem, Na boku tworzy jednak muzykę do filmów, a przynajmniej brzmiącą jakby mogła jakiś upiększać. Tak jest z jego nową płytą "EVA" , która prezentowałaby się doskonale w filmie o eksploracji kosmosu.

Opowieść Ferrery zaczyna się od "listu znikąd", poetyckiego mówionego słowa, w którym chociaż jest po włosku, można znaleźć czytelne odwołania do kosmosu. Potwierdzają to dźwięki kolejnych utworów, startując w "Mission Start" z zaimplementowanym w muzykę odliczaniu do rozpoczęcia lotu. Podobnie jest w różnych innych momentach tej płyty, gdy rozbrzmiewają dialogi pomiędzy astronautami, a robią to nie tylko na tle kosmicznej elektroniki, ale też całkiem post-rockowych gitar ("We're On TV"), w czym muzyka Ferrery zupełnie przypomina fenomenalny soundtrack z filmu "Moon".

Utwory tworzą spójną historię, która miejscami staje się naprawdę dramatyczna, zwłaszcza w "Water", gdzie naziemni inżynierowie starają się pomóc mającemu problemy astronaucie. Muzyka umiejętnie podbija napięcie, jak w najlepszym kosmicznym thrillerze.

Beyond The Event Horizon - FAR EP (2018) EN

Four years after releasing the LP debut, the Poznań based Beyond the Event Horizon come back with an EP. As their name pledges, it is dominated with space atmosphere and matching electronic post-rock. It comes from their vision of creating "instrumental alternative rock not quite fitting in clichés".

That's probably why they create a well-balanced mix of guitar and electronic post-rock, it is exactly the electronic part that attracts and make the project unique and original. Pulsating, space backgrounds as in the opening "Far Beyond" and widely used delicate keys make the baseline of their music. This combined with engaging compositions that create the thrilling story of a being lost in the vast universe, make the album a good continuation of the debut.

What catches the attention is the way the compositions generate tension, especially in "Spiral" where the slow intro lined with samples sounding as if they were taken from SpaceX transmission, leads to the finishing explosion of loud guitar and electronic sounds. But in fact, the album has more down-to-Earth message because the real "Uncertain Return" addresses the whole humanity and what happens with it in those interesting times now. Besides the apocalyptic music, it is underlined by the use of samples from a TV broadcast from the 9/11 attacks.

Beyond The Event Horizon - FAR EP (2018) PL

Cztery lata po wydaniu długogrającego debiutu, poznańskie Beyond the Event Horizon wraca z EP-ką. Tak jak nazwa zobowiązuje, dominują na niej motywy kosmiczne i odpowiadający im elektroniczny post-rock. Odpowiada on ich wizji by pisać muzykę około-rockową, oddaloną jak to tylko możliwe od gatunkowych banałów.

Pewnie dlatego tworzą harmonijny miks gitarowego i elektronicznego post-rocka. To właśnie elektronika przyciąga do projektu i nadaje mu oryginalności. Pulsujące, kosmiczne tła, jak w otwierającym EP-kę "Far Beyond" i często używane delikatne klawisze to podstawa ich muzyki. Do tego wciągające kompozycje, budujące przejmującą historię istoty zagubionej w bezgranicznym kosmosie sprawiają, że płyta jest godną kontynuacją debiutu.

Zwraca uwagę stopniowo narastające napięcie dzięki sprawnie napisanym kompozycjom, przede wszystkim w "Spiral", gdzie powolne intro poprzetykane samplami brzmiącymi jak wzięte z transmisji SpaceX-a, prowadzi do wybuchającego głośnymi gitarowymi i elektronicznymi dźwiękami finiszu. Jednak płyta ma w istocie charakter bardziej przyziemny bo prawdziwy niepewny powrót w "Uncertain Return" tyczy się całej ludzkości i tego, co się z nią dzieje w ostatnich czasach. Poza apokaliptyczną muzyką świadczą o tym sample z telewizji z momentu ataku na World Trade Center.

Ashen Swan - Pale Blue Dot (2017) EN

Sound of emptiness from the Windy City. The artist creating his music as Ashen Swan, shows us how the world looks when viewed from space distances wen the whole planet turns into a pale blue dot.

From this distance, he is able to see the generations changing and everyone following their life up til the cold embraces of Mother Death. This perspective lets him see outside the frames we set up ourselves not to get mad, to have something to live for. Ashen Swan doesn't have any problems with that seemingly.

He shows that with his dense noise, well done drones that create wide sections, cosmic landscapes full of freezing nothing and stillness. He finishes it with beautifully sounding keys in "Generations Come, Generations Go" and bombastic backgrounds in "All Streams Flow Into the Sea" or eventually the annoyingly noisy finish of "And the Sea Is Never Full".

Ashen Swan - Pale Blue Dot (2017) PL

Dźwięki pustki z Wietrznego Miasta. Artysta tworzący jako Ashen Swan pokazuje jak wygląda świat widziany z kosmicznej odległości gdy cała planeta zamienia się w bladą błękitną kropkę.

Z tej odległości widzi jak przemijają pokolenia, a każdy zmierza do zimnych objęć matki śmierci. Taka perspektywa pozwala spojrzeć poza ramy, które narzucamy sobie sami, tak by nie oszaleć, by mieć po co żyć. Ashen Swan nie ma z tym problemów.

Pokazuje to gęstym noise'em, znakomicie zrobionymi dronami tworzącymi rozległe pasaże, kosmiczne krajobrazy pełne zimnej pustki i bezruchu. Dokłada do tego szereg rodzynków. Dobrze brzmią klawisze w "Generations Come, Generations Go" i podniosłe tła w "All Streams Flow Into the Sea" czy w końcu nieznośnie hałasujący finał "And the Sea Is Never Full".

Opollo - Of A Distorted Star (2017) EN

How would reality look if the Apollo Program the journey to the Silver Globe started not in USA but in the Polish town of Opole? It would sure be called Opollo, just like the project by the Opole based Jarek Leśkiewicz.

Leśkiewicz together with his trusted guests takes his audience for a long interstellar journey with the non-obvious and undiscovered ambient sounds from "Of A Distorted Star" album. It is, just like the space itself, super diverse. Together with delicate space noise backgrounds, it can also seduce with bombastic ambient in "Recluse", allure with delicate keys in "Magnitude"  intrigue with industrial pace in "Rapid Rotators".

It should now be stated that yes, Poland can into space.

Opollo - Of A Distorted Star (2017) PL

Jak wyglądałaby rzeczywistość, gdyby program Apollo na Srebrny Glob wystartował nie z Ameryki a z Opola? Na pewno nazywałby się Opollo, tak jak projekt opolskiego artysty Jarka Leśkiewicza.

Leskiewicz wraz z zaufanymi gośćmi zabiera swoich słuchaczy w długą międzygwiezdną podróż dzięki niebanalnym i niezbadanym ambientowym dźwiękom na "Of A Distorted Star". Płyta, jak sam kosmos, jest niezwykle zróżnicowana. Poza łagodnymi tłami kosmicznego szumu lubi uwieść podniosłym ambientem jak w "Recluse", ująć delikatnymi klawiszami w "Magnitude" czy zafrapować industrialnym tempem w "Rapid Rotators".

Należy więc chyba stwierdzić, że Poland can into space.

musicformessier - Eclipse (2017) EN

Musicformessier is created by István Csarnogurszky know also as Black Hills or whitecube, who is a specialist in making a moody ambient-like post-rock or "acoustic space art" as he calls it. Spacerock without those tons of glamour, the essence only? Help yourselves!

"Eclipse" is more than just a new single. It contains of older tracks and is a real gem because of collaborations with some loud Bandcamp projects with similar taste in music. And so, there are appearances by Sébastien Touraton known as HeklAa (who collaborated with Csarnogurszky also on "Rivers & Shores"), Peter Sarosdi (Iketa) or Francesco Berta.

But the highlight of the album is undoubtedly the collaboration with the unbelievable Oleksiy Sakevych, who has already appeared on this blog as Endless Melancholy. In their "The Seventh Ocean" the space melancholy by Musicformessier is combined with the sadness of the ocean in Sakevych's sounds. Those two final frontiers have been unapproachable limits for humankind in different parts of its history but they also have emitted this call to see the unknown, the melancholy that is always connected with it. And now they are connected in this one track number 3 on the album.

Musicformessier to István Csarnogurszky znany też z Black Hills czy whitecube, który tworzy zakrawający o ambient nastrojowy post-rock albo "akustyczną sztukę kosmosu" jak sam o nim pisze. Spacerock bez tony efekciarstwa, sama jego esencja? Proszę bardzo.

"Eclipse" to coś więcej niż tylko singiel. Zawiera on trochę starsze kawałki ale, co najistotniejsze, jest prawdziwym skarbem ze względu na kolaboracje z głośnymi bandcampowymi projektami podobnych gustów. I tak pojawia się Sébastien Touraton tworzący jako HeklAa (który z Csarnogurszkym współpracował już na "Rivers & Shores"), Peter Sarosdi (Iketa) czy Francesco Berta.

Najważniejszym jednak punktem programu jest kolaboracja z niezrównanym Oleksiyem Sakevychem, który gościł już na tym blogu jako Endless Melancholy. W ich wspólnym "The Seventh Ocean" kosmiczna melancholia Musicformessier łączy się ze smutkiem oceanu w dźwiękach Sakevycha. Te dwie ostateczne granice stanowiły nieprzekraczalną przeszkodę dla człowieka w różnych etapach historii ale również emanowały zew i związaną z nim nostalgię za nieznanym. Teraz łączą się w utworze numer trzy na płycie.

Shadow Universe - The Unspeakable World (2017) EN

Guitar post-rock from the Slovenian Shadow Universe seduces with epicness and well thought through compositions. Besides raw guitar sounds, the musicians show also a whole spectre of ways to create diverse and catchy instrumental music.

The band describe their music as one fitting perfectly for soundtracks. The amount of epicness suggests that it'd be a perfect choice for a good space opera, which is actually reflected in the tracks' titles. Especially spectacular is the second part of "Pulsaru", where indeed pulsating keys meet extremely raw effects and loud guitars. Similarly, "Free Dimension" and "Resident of Forgotten Galaxy" are something to pay attention to.

Tha album ends with two tracks connected by unsettling, folkish/space sounds that create one big farewell to life and hope. Perfect ending for a very good album.

Gitarowy post-rock od Słoweńców z Shadow Universe uwodzi rozmachem i przemyślaną kompozycję. Oprócz surowych gitar, muzycy prezentują całą gamę sposobów na urozmaiconą i wciągającą muzykę instrumentalną.

Zespół opisuje swoją twórzczość jako muzykę do ścieżek dźwiękowych z filmów. Pod względem epickości nadawałaby się zwłaszcza do dobrej space opery, co zresztą odzwierciedlone jest w tytułach utworów. Niezwykle efektownie prezentuje się druga część "Pulsaru", gdzie pulsujące właśnie klawisze spotykają się z niezwykle chropowatymi efektami i głośnymi gitarami. Podobnie "Free Dimension" czy "Resident of Forgotten Galaxy" przykuwa ucho słuchacza.

Płyta kończy się dwoma utworami połączonymi niepokojącymi, folkowo kosmicznymi dźwiękami, które tworzą jedno wielkie pożegnanie z życiem i nadzieją. Doskonałe zakończenie bardzo dobrej płyty.
