Drain Blossoms - Tales from the Ixian Tomb (2020) EN

Virginia-based artist making their music under the moniker of Drain Blossoms released last month their first and second albums. I found Tales from the Ixian Tomb first and I'm in awe.

The album is commented on with the not-perfect quote from Tyler Ragar's poem: "In the middle of the winter, in the middle of the night, these two dead boys got up to fight". If there's not enough of this dark but also irrational atmosphere, the artist's website also quotes Dante. And it's somehow reflected on the album - on one hand there's a lot of dark neoclassicism, especially when it comes to the thick strings, on the other - a solid quantity of electronic effects weirding it up (The Conduit) and some other ways of expression like choral chanting in the great An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal or very dream pop-like vocals in Phil.

It has to be said that the artist managed to create a diverse album that at the same time seems to be kept in coherent atmosphere. A bit like Burton, a bit like early Irrepressibles - neoclassicism and electronics together serving the dark, gothic but also somewhat ridiculous compositions. Delicious. Now let's check the second album called The Halfway Child.

Artysta z Wirginii podpisujący swoją muzykę jako Drain Blossoms wydał w zeszłym miesiącu swój pierwszy i drugi album. Ja natrafiłem najpierw na Tales from the Ixian Tomb i jestem zachwycony.

Płyta podpisana jest niedokładnym cytatem z wiersza Tylera Ragera "Pośród zimy, pośród nocy, dwóch martwych chłopców powstało by walczyć". Jeśli tej mrocznej ale też irracjonalnej atmosfery było mało, strona artysty przytacza też cytaty z Dantego. Trochę podobnie jest z muzyką na płycie - z jednej strony sporo mrocznej neoklasyki, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zawiesiste smyczki, z drugiej - udziwniające ją elektroniczne efekty (The Conduit) oraz takie zagrania jak chóralne zaśpiewy w znakomitym An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal czy te całkiem dream popujące w Phil.

Trzeba przyznać, że artyście udało się stworzyć album bardzo zróżnicowany, a jednocześnie wydający się być utrzymany w spójnym klimacie. Trochę jak Burton, trochę jak wczesne Irrepressibles - neoklasyka i elektronika razem w służbie mrocznych, gotyckich ale też trochę karykaturalnych kompozycji. Pyszne. A teraz trzeba sprawdzić drugą płytę The Halfway Child.

Violet Cold - Noir Kid (2020) EN

There's was so many times that I wrote here about Emin Guliyev and his music child but also he released albums that deserved the highest attention as many times. It's no different this year as with his Noir Kid, the Azer artist is going to compete in all post-metal/blackgaze ranks.

This album is the continuation of the style the musician mastered over the years: the combination of really dark post-metal with colourful, very pop-esque and energetic electronics with elements of folk and other, less obvious genres. Obviously, one has to like it, but it gets perfectly into my taste It's something like hipster-metal coined by the Russians of Haze of Summer. Does it make this album hipster-blackgaze? Eclectic black metal? Everything fits.

There's so much going on in every track that it's difficult to point to one song or even a fragment that stands out. The whole album makes a broad sea of Guliyev's infinite ideas and his dark electronic fantasies.

O Eminie Gulijewie i jego muzycznym dziecku pisałem już wielokrotnie bo też wielokrotnie jego wydawnictwa zasługiwały na najwyższą uwagę. Nie inaczej jest z tegorocznym Noir Kid, którym jak co roku Azer walczyć będzie o najwyższe laury w post-metalowych i blackgaze'owych podsumowaniach.

Ta płyta to kontynuacja stylu, który artysta doprowadził do perfekcji: połączenie naprawdę mrocznego post-metalu z kolorową, niezwykle popową i energetyczną elektroniką z elementami folku i innych, mniej oczywistych gatunków. Oczywiście, trzeba to lubić, ale w moje gusta wpasowuje się idealnie, to coś takiego jak hipster-metal Rosjan z Haze of Summer. Hipster-blackgaze? Eclectic black metal? Wszystko pasuje.

Tak wiele dzieje się w każdym jednym kawałku, że ciężko wskazać utwór czy choćby jego fragment, który miałby być bardziej godny uwagi niż inne. Cała płyta to rozległe morze niewyczerpanych pomysłów Guliewa i jego elektroniczno-mroczne fantazje.

Washers - Drown (2019) EN

Washers are "four piece eclectic feedback worship", they come from Vancouver and play some of the most interesting psychedelic rocks of the autumn. Fantasy and noise, this is what a lot of on the new album Drown.

First thing I thought of when listening to their music is how the vocalist's voice is similar to the one of Harry McVeigh of White Lies. But instead of being accompanied by quasi-goth rock, there's loud and unforeseeable psychedelia. Ever-changing pace, rapid fragments of silence proceeded by solid doses of guitars - these are the Canadians' compositions like. What's important, sometimes, like in Hecate Strait, their music turns into legit post-rock and it is still pretty good. And the further the album goes, the more eclectic it gets as Manleash in some places gets into darkwave while in another shows a lot of post-hardcore and so on and so on. Some fragments definitely worth checking out.

Washers - Drown (2019) PL

Washers to "czterej wielbiciele eklektycznego sprzężenia", pochodzą oni z Vancouver i grają jeden z najciekawszych tej jesieni psychodelicznych rocków. Fantazja i hałas, to właśnie w dużych ilościach znaleźć można na płycie Drown.

Pierwsze o czym pomyślałem słuchając ich muzyki to jak bardzo głos wokalisty przypomina ten Harry'ego McVeigha z White Lies. Tylko że zamiast być akompaniowanym przez quasi-gotyckie rock, na płycie głośna i nieprzewidywalna psychodela. Zmieniające się tempo, nagłe chwile ciszy, zaraz potem solidne gitary - takie sa kompozycje Kanadyjczyków. Co ciekawe czasem, jak w Hecate Strait, muzyka zespołu przechodzi płynnie w pełnokrwisty post-rock i wtedy też daje radę. A im dalej w las tym bardziej eklektycznie się robi bo Manleash to miejscami darkwave, a miejscami post-hardcore i tak dalej, i tak dalej. Kilka fragmentów godnych uwagi.

Isoberlinia - Isoberlinia (2019) EN

The debut EP by the Swedish Isoberlinia, entitled just like the project itself, caught my attention o the spot and it absolutely deserves some hype as the level of the eclectic and difficult to label dream pop there is quite high.

I can't say much about the Swedes. But their music is already way easier to talk about: soaked with electronics and shoegaze atmosphere, gloomy dream pop. Dispersed and delicate male vocals meet here very lively backgrounds, especially when it comes to the bass line and percussion fragments that can be almost tribal-trance-like (in Wash). This track is extremely interesting as it mesmerizes also with the psychedelic guitar and, obviously, shoegaze vocal.

The longer the short EP goes, the more diverse and eclectic it seems. In Finest Hour the show is stolen by acoustic guitar sounding as if it was taken from a "Spanish Masters of Guitar" album. In Darkest Hour on the other hand, the music is ruled by new age synths. And it all comes together, a really good debut.

Isoberlinia - Isoberlinia (2019) PL

Debiutancka EP-ka szwedzkiego zespołu Isoberlinia zatytułowana tak samo jak projekt wpadła mi w ucho od razu i zasługuje na spory rozgłos biorąc pod uwagę jakość eklektycznego i ciężkiego do zaszufladkowania dream popu na niej zawartego.

O Szwedach za wiele nie potrafię powiedzieć. Natomiast ich muzyka jest już bardziej wyrazista: przesiąknięty elektroniką i shoegaze'ową atmosferą ponury dream pop. Rozproszony i delikatny męski wokal spotyka w niej całkiem żywe tła, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o linię basu i elementy perkusyjne, które potrafią być wręcz tribalowo-transowe (w Wash). Ten kawałek zresztą jest mega ciekawy bo hipnotyzuje również psychodeliczną gitarą i, oczywiście, shoegaze'owym wokalem.

Im dłużej trwa ta krótka EP-ka tym bardziej zróżnicowana i eklektyczna się wydaje. W Finest Hour na pierwszy plan wysuwa się gitara akustyczna brzmiąca niemal tak jakby wzięto ją ze składanki "Hiszpańscy Mistrzowie Gitary". W Darkest Hour za to królują newage'owe synthy. I wszystko jakoś ze sobą współpracuje, bardzo dobry debiut.
