Ben Haskins - Chimera Wakes (2023)

I'm a big fan of Ben Haskins' music. As you could notice, the artists releases at least one album every year recently and I just have to post about it. This year's Chimera Wakes is no exception as the album's bright magenta colors invite the audience into the mesmerizing post-rock music world from Canada. 

The main thing about Haskins' music is the fantastic flow that carries the instrumental compositions. It comes from the synthy backgrounds that everything here is based on: it's so beautiful in places like Under where the whole thing: the synths, the guitars and the keys come together into one, lively and exciting but also soothing and beautiful soundscape. And it's not the only one here: in fact, this is the main characteristic of the whole thing. The album sucks you in, mesmerizes you and then leaves you with an impression that it finished so quickly and almost no time has passed.

Linalab - Desire Paths (2021)

Lina Bautista, visual and audio artist from Barcelona, is better known as Linalab and, under this moniker, she released a very post-rock album that may be a bit of surprising considering she's a solo musician. Nevertheless, Desire Paths presents some quality and modern take on the genre.

On this album, the Spanish artists joined forces with Rafa Camisón who is responsible for drums, but otherwise, it was all Bautista and her musical inspirations from Vladislav Delay to Mogwai. The fresh sound of this music comes from the fact that this post-rock comes from guitars as well as from synths use which adds to the experimental and very artistic vibes on the album. The weight put on guitars is actually somewhat new for the artist and it seems that betting on this was the right move. The whole thing sounds very post-rock-like but there's also this beautiful, clean order of sounds, you can feel that everything is in its right place, there's no place for chaos, it is this kind of clinical beauty so characteristic for electronic music.

This doesn't mean that Bautista's music is emotionless. Quite the opposite. The compositions are almost programmed to evoke intense feelings within the audience and songs like Far are the best example for that, while other compositions are more into the quietly melancholic ambiance (so good in A Hard Rain Has Fallen). It may be a surprising title, but it has to be said that Linalab's new album makes a perfectly good post-rock with a twist.

Unreqvited - Mosaic II: la déteste et la détresse (2020) EN

How is it possible for a music to be at the same time "depressive & uplifting"? It's answered by the Canadian artist who makes music as Unreqvited. His very rich blackgaze was shown multiple times already, this time it's on this year's second part of his album Mosaic.

As could be expected from blackgaze, in the Canadian's music two natures collide: the aggression and depression of metal and epicness and hopefulness of the airy elements. The withdrawn, always inspired scream sounds like a choir of fallen angels and it's well accompanied by the walls of synths. For my taste there's sometimes too many those dad-rock guitar riffs but in the long run there's more post-metal noise here and I'm going to stick to that.

There are moments of rest, as in the piano keys-dominated first part of Disorder, but, as expected, it's mostly for the next fragments feel even more monumental and with even bigger grandeur. The artist himself writes that "this album now contains the ire, misery and anxiety in between, making it my darkest, most daring release to date", but it seems to me that there's still a lot of hope in the sound of the Canadian's music.

Unreqvited - Mosaic II: la déteste et la détresse (2020) PL

Jak to możliwe, że muzyka ma być jednocześnie "depresyjna i podnosząca na duchu"? Przybliża kanadyjski artysta występujący pod sceniczną nazwą Unreqvited. Swój przebogaty blackgaze pokazywał już wielokrotnie, tym razem na tegorocznej drugiej części dzieła Mosaic.

Jak można się spodziewać po blackgazie, w muzyce Kanadyjczyka ścierają się dwie natury, agresja i depresja metalu z podniosłością i nadzieją eterycznych elementów. Wycofany, zawsze natchniony scream brzmi jak chór upadłych aniołów, a akompaniują mu w tym udanie ściany synthów. Trochę jak na mój gust za dużo dad-rockowych riffów gdzieniegdzie, jedna na dłuższą metę więcej tu post-metalowego hałasu i tego się będę trzymał. 

Zdarzają się też momenty zupełnego wytchnienia, jak w zdominowanym przez klawisze pianina początku Disorder, natomiast jak można się spodziewać, istnieją one tylko po to by następne fragmenty doniosły jeszcze bardziej monumentalnie i z jeszcze większym rozmachem. Sam pisze, że "ten album zawiera gniew, rozpacz i niepewność w sobie, co sprawia, że to póki co moje najmroczniejsze, najśmielsze wydawnictwo", wydaje mi się jednak, że jest w brzmieniu muzyki Kanadyjczyka wciąż sporo z muzyki nadziei.

Old Alps - Ruach (2020) PL

Wydany przez netlabel Memories Melt album projektu Old Alps może niewielu osobom cokolwiek mówić. Tymczasem muzyka ukrywającego się pod tym pseudonimem Andrew Foleya to nadzwyczaj udany, mocno elektroniczny ambient.

Projekt na Ruach "eksploruje piękne drony, melodyjne błyski, które kołyszą się wśród zakurzonych ścieżek i szybujących fal hałasu". Faktycznie więcej jest na niej atmosferycznego szumu i nastrojowego ambientu niż prawdziwego hałasu. Prawdopodbnie moim ulubionym kawałkiem będzie tutaj Life Seeps z jego urokliwymi, nieco drażniącymi synthami i powolną, ale wpadającą w ucho melodią.

Old Alps - Ruach (2020) EN

Released by the Memories Melt netlabel, Old Alps' album may be a mistery to most of us. But the music made by Andrew Foley makes a really well-written, very electronic ambient.

On Ruach, the project is supposed to "explore beautiful drones, melodic twinkles that bend amidst dusty pads and soaring waves of noise". Indeed, there's more atmospheric hum and cosy ambient than real noise there. Probably my favourite track here would be Life Seeps with its charming, yet a bit unnerving synths and slow yet catchy melody.

Pendro and Smallhaus - Debris (2019) PL

Duet Pendro (Tim Jones) i Smallhaus (David Little) to brytyjscy muzycy około-ambientowi, którzy połączyli siły by stworzyć urokliwą EP-kę zatytułowaną Debris.

Mimo tytułu, muzyka na albumie nie jest odpadem, a owocem wytężonej współpracy. Na muzykę składają się dźwięki gitary i syntezatora silnie przetworzone  i przemielone, tak by wprawiać w stan melancholijnego zadumania. Synthowe tła nadają całości ponurej melodii, a eksperymenty na pierwszym planie intrygują. Ciężko lepiej określić tę skomplikowaną miksturę niż zrobili to sami muzycy mówiąc, że "rozciąga się pomiędzy glitchującym ambientowym techno po rytualistycznym psychodeliznymi, synthowymi i napędzanymi electronicznym smyczkiem ambientowymi dronami". Słuchać!

Pendro and Smallhaus - Debris (2019) EN

The duo Pendro (Tim Jones) and Smallhaus (David Little) is made of British ambient and around-ambient musicians who joined their forces to create a charming EP called Debris.

Despite the title, the album's music is not a leftover from anything but the result of intense cooperation. It's made of guitar and synth sounds heavily distracted and re-formed so they induce the state of melancholic thoughtfulness. The synth backgrounds add the gloomy melodies while the foreground's experiments intrigue. It's hard to explain this work in different way than the artists themselves saying that it's "ranging from glitchy ambient techno to ritualistic psych and synth and eBow driven ambient drones". Have a go!

Fogscape - Badlands (2018) PL

Piszą o sobie, że są z Grenlandii, ale na cover arcie umieścili fantastyczną pracę Noela Kernsa rodem z Dzikiego Zachodu. Za to w swojej muzyce pokazuje dlaczego czerpią z pustkowi, obojętnie czy lodowych czy pustynnych. Ich nastrojowa, intymna i poruszająca elektronika ma coś z tych spokojniejszych utworów Chrisa Cornera w udowadnianiu, że jest odpowiednim medium do przekazywania melancholii.

Między jednocześnie ciepłym i odświeżającymi wokalami na płycie Fogscape hula wiatr, przez co płyta brzmi jak wykonywana w tej szopie o dziurawych ścianach z okładki. Co chwila słychać również kolejne dźwięki przypominające o oryginalności tej muzycznej konstrukcji z płaczliwym skrzypieniem w "Encounters" na czele. Do atmosfery pierwszej części płyty dostosowuje się też powolne tempo i przejmujący wokal.

Tymczasem "Aftermath" wprowadza na chwilę żwawsze tempo. Najważniejsze jednak, że projekt potrafi zachować wyróżniającą go intymną atmosferę czy to przy bardziej tanecznej formie, czy w utrzymanym w konwencji dialogu "Eidolon" tam samo jak w nostalgicznych balladach. Godne polecenia.

Live For You - Valentine (2018) EN

Dreampop-esque new wave attacking from the very beginning with its unique atmosphere, this is the new project by Caitlin Rae from  California, Live For You. The American's debut album, "Valentine",  makes her difficult to google without finding a lot about certain Welsh but it is also filled with brilliant music, although it's not very long.

Already the first notes of "Temper Temper" announce an uncompromising approach to cold wave as the artist's emotionless vocal (and also perfectly wave image of the project) is purposely collided with aggressively synthpop sounds. Another, more dream pop face of the project is shown not earlier than in the album's second track, "Poison-Darling". But still, the clear bass line and synth spaciousness give away the obvious lov for the 80s.

Gradually more dream-pop-esque is "Still Love You", especially because of the delicately catchy chorus that makes the track difficult to get out of your head, similarly to "Bright As Blood" which, despite te dark, gothic title, covers the audience with a warm, airy blanket of shoegaze. The album is a collision of many alternative genres and this is probably why it caught my attention so well.

Live For You - Valentine (2018) PL

Dreampopowy new wave atakujący od samego początku swoją atmosferą, oto projekt Caitlin Rae z Kalifornii, Live For You. Debiutancka płyta Amerykanki, "Valentine", sprawia, że trudno ją wyguglować nie trafiając na pewnych Walijczyków, ale też zachwyca muzyką, mimo że jest króciutka.

Już pierwsze dźwięki "Temper Temper" zwiastują bezkompromisowe podejście do zimnej fali, oto wyprany z emocji wokal artystki (a także doskonale wave'owa stylistyka projektu) zderza się z agresywnymi synthowymi dźwiękami. Dopiero drugi utwór płyty, "Poison-Darling", pokazuje inne, bardziej dreampopowe oblicze wokalistki. Mimo to, wyraźna linia basu i synthowa przestrzeń zdradza wyraźne zamiłowanie latami 80.

Gradualnie bardziej dreampopowo jest w "Still Love You", głównie dzięki delikatnie przebojowemu refrenowi, który jak nic innego wpada w ucho, podobnie jak "Bright As Blood", który wbrew mroczno-gotyckiemu tytułowi obejmuje słuchaczy ciepłą, eteryczną kołderką bliską shoegaze'owi. Na płycie zderza się wiele gatunków, pewnie dlatego tak mocno przyciąga uwagę.

Violet Cold - Sommermorgen (2018) PL

Ciężko do końca objąć rozumem nowe wydawnictwo azerskiego artysty Emina Gulijewa czyli Violet Cold. Jeden z moich ulubionych projektów muzycznych skręcił w zupełnie inną stronę od czasu ostatniego pojawienia się na blogu z blackgaze'owym "Anomie" - tym razem oferuje całe spektrum elektronicznej muzyki z elementami post-rocka, folku i ambientu, a wszystko w formie trylogii zatytułowanej wspólnie "Sommermorgen".

Część pierwsza, zatytułowana "Innocence" wita nas radosnym ćwierkaniem ptaków szybko jednak zagłuszonym najpierw przez masywne brzmienie perkusji, potem przez eterycznie elektroniczne tło. Wraca jednak od czasu do czasu niczym motyw przewodni tytułowej niewinności. Dopasowuje się do niego ogólny nastrój płyty, nawet gdy robi się naprawdę głośno, tak jak w "Ein Langer Weg", jest zdecydowanie bardziej euforycznie niż melancholijnie. Swoją robotę robią znakomite synthowe tła dające energii niczym pierwsza wiosenna zieleń. Nawet, gdy do głosu dochodzą smutne brzmienia folkowego instrumentarium, wiadomo, że to tylko przygotowanie do kolejnego odlotu.

Euforycznie i energetycznie jest również na drugiej płycie. Ta poświęcona jest radości i zgodnie z tym mamy i kipiącą od energii ścianę dźwięku w "Kopfkino" i bardzo taneczne rytmy w "Time to Tango" czy "Schöne Dummheit" i tak do końca. Jest to bardzo dokładna metafora wypełnionych endorfinami momentów takich jak taniec czy zakochiwanie się.

Ale te mijają i pojawia się żal za utraconym szczęściem. Właśnie melancholii poświęcona jest część trzecia, w której fani Violet Cold znajdą więcej dźwięków, do których przyzwyczaił ich artysta. To tutaj pojawiają się wyraźniejsze, już prawie metalowe gitary, zwłaszcza w pięknym "Ein Hauch Von Ewigkeit", a mimo to wciąż odczuwalna jest atmosfera pierwszych dwóch części. Tak jak wspomnienie szczęścia. 

Każda z trzech części kosztuje po 23 złote (6 USD) dając w sumie niestety aż 67 złotych (18 USD).

Violet Cold - Sommermorgen (2018) EN

It's hard to wrap your head around the new work by the Azeri artist Emin Guliyev or Violet Cold. One of my favourite music projects has made a turn since the last time it appeared on this blog with the blackgazing "Anomie" - this time it is the whole spectre of electronic music with elements of post-rock, folk, ambient, etc, and everything is formed into a trilogy called "Sommermorgen".

The first part, entitled "Innocence", greets us with cheerful chirping of birds which is soon overtaken by the massive drums and then by the airy electronic backgrounds. It comes back from time to time like the innocence's leit-motif. The overall atmosphere of the album fits here, even when it gets really loud, as in "Ein Langer Weg", it is more euphoric than melancholic. The job is done by brilliant synth backgrounds as lively as spring's first green. Even when it comes to a sad, folk instruments sound, it is clear that it's only an introduction to another take-off.

Euphoria and energy rule also the second album. It is devoted to joy and accordingly, there is both the lively wall of sound in "Kopfkino", very danceable rhythm in "Time to Tango" and in "Schöne Dummheit" and everything up to the end.. It is quite a literal metaphor of those endorphin releasing moments as dance or falling in love.

But those are known to end and there is always regret for the finished happiness. So the third album is about melancholy and it is the one, most fans of Violet Cold should find familiar. There are clearer, almost metal guitars, especially in the beautiful "Ein Hauch Von Ewigkeit" but still, there's some of the atosphere from the first two parts. Like a memory of when you were happy..

Sexores - East/West (2018) EN

Echoes and synthesizers, wall of sound and futurism - the musicians of Sexores don't write much about their project but when they do, it's meaningful. Coming to us from Quito, Ecuador, band is a mixture of Blade Runner-ian synth and very moody shoegaze.

In the music that is neon and foggy with the synth sound, the rare talent in writing engaging and catchy songs lies on the "East/West" album. The way the delicate voice of the vocalist hidden behind the nickname 2046, warbling synth keys and the melody in "The City that Sorrow Built" are combined makes lasting impression. This unorthodox mixture of innocent vocals (how sweet it is in  "When I'm in Your Eyes" is barely comprehensible) and cold-wave-synth-etheric music is the band's strongest side.

The best way to sum up the album's review is to let the artists speak for themselves: "this album is a perfect balance between that idea we had of the band that gazed at their shoes and the legacy of a whole generation of music made with synthesizers and futurism". To the point.

Sexores - East/West (2018) PL

Echa i syntezatory, ściana dźwięku i futuryzm - muzycy Sexores nie piszą o sobie wiele ale to co już piszą jest bardzo treściwe. Pochodzący z ekwadorskiego Quito zespół to mieszanka bladerunnerowskiego synthu z bardzo nastrojowym shoegaze'em.

Wśród neonowej i zamglonej syntezatorowym brzmieniem muzyki czai się na płycie "East/West" przedziwny talent do pisania niezwykle wciągających i wpadających w ucho utworów. To jak pięknie grają ze sobą delikatny głos wokalistki ukrywającej się pod pseudonimem 2046, szczebiotliwe klawisze i melodia w "The City that Sorrow Built" robi wielkie wrażenie. Właśnie te nieszablonowe połączenia niewinnego wokalu (jak słodko brzmi w "When I'm in Your Eyes" ledwo można objąć rozumem) i zimnofalowej-synthowej-eterycznej muzyki to najmocniejszy punkt zespołu.

Podsumowując płytę najlepiej oddać głos samym artystom: "ten album to idealny balans pomiędzy naszym pomysłem na zespół artystów wpatrujących się w buty a dziedzictwem całej generacji muzyki stworzonej za pomocą syntezatorów i futuryzmu". W punkt.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) EN

Latin America should bring connotations with heat but my music discoveries indicate something else, it is a kingdom of cold wave. Today, another example of this is Sadness Isolation created by Daniel Rossier from Peru.

The characteristic trait of his is combination of coldness, darkness and high pace. Apart from the deep voice and whispers that appear out of nowhere, darkness is suggested by the depressive image and lyrics. The name of the project is quite clear - the isolation caused by sadness may lead to creation of great art and the gloomy Rossier is a perfect example of this claim.

The coldness is almost everywhere in this album. From the cold-blooded vocal to flat and clear bass line and the synth backgrounds making the whole thing very suggestive. While it's all true, the tracks are also surprisingly fast, very often almost disco-like if there's someone who likes such dark discos. The most important though is that, as it's the artist's goal, his music contemplates the 80s like a not very distant yesterday.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) PL

Ameryka Łacińska powinna kojarzyć się z gorącem, tymczasem moje muzyczne odkrycia mówią co innego, to królestwo zimnego wave'u. Kolejnym przedstawicielem jest dziś peruwiańskie Sadness Isolation tworzone przez Daniela Rossiera.

Jego znakiem rozpoznawczym jest połączenie zimna, mroku i tempa. Oprócz głębokiego głosu, pojawiających się czasem znienacka szeptów mroczne są przede wszystkim depresyjny imydż i teksty utworów. Nazwa projektu to dość jasny przekaz - izolacja spowodowana smutkiem potrafi prowadzić do wspaniałej sztuki, mroczny Rossier jest na to dobrym przykładem.

Zimne na tej płycie jest niemal wszystko. Od zimnokrwistego wokalu przez płaski ale wyraźny bas po nadające całości wyrazu warstwy syntezatorowego dźwięku. Tymczasem utwory są zaskakująco szybkie, często prawie dyskotekowe, jeśli ktoś lubi tak mroczne dyskoteki. Najważniejsze jednak, że tak jak chce artysta, jego muzyka kontempluje lata 80. jako nie tak odległe w czasie wczoraj.

"Tragic" można mieć za 30 złotych (7 EUR).

Amrou Kithkin - Lamentations EP (2017) EN

Probably the majority of Polish new wave bands is somehow connected with Łódź. This huge city in central Poland seems to be a perfect environment for the genre, well-aligned with the "city, mass, machine" motto (coined by Polish poet Tadeusz Peiper). Amrou Kithkin is not an exception as they are based in Kielce and, you guessed it, Łódź.

It's not a new creation, their beginnings date back to 2011 but they have just released only their third EP. Bartek G. Wrona and Piotr Rzodkiewicz prefer the ethereal wave label and indeed, their music is somehow like dreamy shoegaze with emotionless vocals and crucial bass line that pull them towards wave. They are down to some musical experiments too, as "Angel Fetish" is close to some ambient sounds accompanied by vocal that sounds like a poetry declamation while "Extortist" is basically a coldwave ballad.

As their spiritual managers on the FB profile, they mention probably the most important journalism-organization people of the Polish offstream - Agnieszka Szydłowska and Artur Rojek. Well aimed.

Amrou Kithkin - Lamentations EP (2017) PL

Prawdopodobnie większość polskich zespołów zimnofalowych jest jakoś związanych z Łodzią. Ten miejski moloch w środkowej Polsce wydaje się być naturalnym habitatem dla artystów tworzących w tym gatunku, zgodnie z hasłem "miasto, masa, maszyna". Nie inaczej jest z Amrou Kithkin, zespołem z Kielc i, właśnie, Łodzi.

Nie są nowym tworem, zespół założono w 2011, wydają teraz jednak dopiero trzecią EPkę. Bartek G Wrona i Piotr Rzodkiewicz wolą jednak labelkę ethereal wave i faktycznie, ich muzyka ma coś z sennego klimatu shoegaze'u, a jednocześnie wyprany z emocji wokal i ważna rola linii basu ciągną ich w stronę (cold)wave'u. Nie stronią jednak od eksperymentów - "Angel Fetish" bliżej do ambientowych dźwięków z wokalem, który brzmi niemal jak deklamowany poemat, a "Extortist" to w zasadzie zimnofalowa ballada.

Jako swoich duchowych menadżerów na FB wymieniają najważniejsze chyba persony dziennikarsko-organizatorskiej strony polskiego offu - Agnieszkę Szydłowską i Artura Rojka. Zdecydowanie właściwy kierunek.
