Saáadon - мреть (наутро ночь) (2021)

That's a great story on itself: two music projects Sádon (a Russia-based duo) and Saåad (Romain Barbot from France) came together to make music so they called this collaboration Saáadon, I think it's brilliant. Their album is called мреть (наутро ночь) which translates to "Die (in the morning night" which makes it clear that its content is going to be dark and poignant.

And the opening notes of heavy organ-like keys are certainly an emotional treat. The very slow soundscape the artists create have those heavy qualities, it's clear for the audience that the music i made to overwhelm and make them feel things. It's noisy, it's tear-jerkingly beautiful and, to top that, there are dispersed vocals that are based on Sádon's Donat Mavleev's poetry. They talk about "the end of time, its horizon and beyond" - quite bombastic themes but also, for ambient music, this is the most grandeur-invoking music you can get, especially thanks to the organ-like parts that make me think of Anna von Hausswolff's collab with Godspeed You! Black Emperor - similar dark and sacral vibes here.

Blankenberge - Everything (2021)

When they debuted back in 2017 with their Radiogaze, there was little doubt that it was the beginning of an Eastern shoegaze icon in the works. And four years and three album later, you can safely agree that the Russian Blankenberge is one of the best heavy shoegaze bands out there and they just proved it with Everything.

This is not indie rock with shoegaze elements, this is not airy dream pop, the Petersburg's outfit clearly went all in the true shoegaze tunes. Their sound is extremely loud with tons of guitar-based walls of noise and subtle, barely legible vocals. Everything is designed to suck the audience into the loud and psychedelic world of noise, bury them within reverbs, trap them under layers of sound. And this is the best feeling ever with Yana Guselnikova's Slowdive-like vocals making this a sweet and memorable experience. There's little point in recommending any particular song, the whole album feels like a coherent and well-leveled whole, a noise adventure if you will. But some parts do feel even more ethereal thanks to the density of dispersed backing vocals that fill out and compliment the guitar noise, like it is the case with the title track Everything.

The lyrics here deal with the human lives' basic but fundamental questions: what's the nature of happiness, what's the nature of relationships and, yes, about being high as a kite. Everything fits shoegaze's euphoric and a bit bombastic vibes and I'm here to feel that. Can't wait for some live gigs by the Russians and their friends from Life on Venus.

tom's diner - сестре (2021)

Tom's diner is a Russian band that "caters to wanderers of all sorts with an exquisite psychedelic post-rock". Their usual lineup involves more traditional for the genre guitar and drums, however, they decided to do something differently recently and so the EP сестре was born.

On this release, the Russians perform their compositions only with the help of piano keys and cello strings. It comes obvious that it makes the whole EP unbelievably climatic and beautiful. The compositions here are slow and focused on creating the intimate, discreet atmosphere. The artists decided to do so to "reveal the melody and feelings of the compositions, without being distracted by anything" and even though the leader of the band had to learn how to play on piano to record this album, it sounds like it achieved its goal. Almost all of the compositions here are the new versions of already existing tacks except for the only new one called рядом. They all, however, sound so well in their own slow and focused way.

Trna - Istok (2021)

The self-acclaimed "hurricane full of emotions" from Saint Petersburg, Trna are post-rock band that is ready to crush the audience with their beautiful and heavy sound. This year's Istok is their fourth album and one to establish their presence in the post-rock genre.

The Russians' post-rock feels extremely massive, atmospheric and heavy. Their sound reminds me of the new God Is an Astronaut and Coastlands' releases with a hint of TESA's rapidness. The band have now decided to go even more into the post-rock realm with less of the blackgaze, post-metal traces they tended to use on previous releases (and in the music of Olhava, the side project of half of the band). Sure, there is some of the blackgaze's synth-like smoothness and metal's crazy, unstoppable drums and the vocals introduced in the album's third track Shining. Still, the overall feeling of the compositions situates it closer to the post-rock icons than anything else (especially that said Shining comes also vocal-less as a bonus track at the end of the album).

There's tons of ultra-heavy sounds in almost every second of the album. The opening in Istok, sets the pace very early and the band don't slow down until the very end. Songs such as Echoes of the Past, Burning Bridges, Shattered Dreams or Hearts Turn to Stone fit neatly within the darkest and heaviest post-rock branch, while, quite surprisingly, the whole thing doesn't end with a blast but with a rather moody and melancholic finish in Rebirth. Top class release.

stars on fire - Ready, Steady, Go!

Lo-fi bedroom gaze without much of the twee-like happiness but with tons of atmosphere enchanted in the whisper-like vocals and lively but non-overwhelmingly noisy instruments. Listeners will find the melodies very charming and that alone can be the best point about the South Korean artist's music. The two tracks cost 5 USD.

Martes Niebla - Helsinki I

The Sevilla-based dreamy music band released an EP back in 2018 but there was no LP follow-up. Now, as they showed some new singles, including this one released by El Genio Equivocado, one can hope for more dream pop content from their side. The song costs 1 EUR.

Paul Good and Kirsty Wood - No Regrets

Good and Wood are a highly artistic duo from London, their website shows their visual and video art as well as impressive performances. The new act comprises of drone-y ambient pop with calm and  warm spoken word vocals released by Tremolo Projects and mesmerizing companion video. The two tracks cost 0.5 GBP.

Teletape - Стрела

The "Moscow dreamers" make some fun-and-joy indie pop music with a touch of ethereal atmosphere, especially in the form of the airy (but also lively) vocals. This is another single they produced and perhaps it's time for something longer. The song costs 3 USD.

Lost Films - Vauxhall (2021)

Lost Films is a duo (or at least it seems it is) out from Russia focused on making very cinematic music that feels like a great and climactic soundtrack to a movie that never was. Their new album called Vauxhall brings a lot of nostalgia to the audience and this is its best side.

The music here is mostly instrumental ambient/post-rock with clearly old-school vibes: there's no fast pace, no heavy sounds, it's mostly reflective and relaxing while still hugely atmospheric. There's a place for accordion sounds, for violins, a lot of keys. And the most outstanding elements: movie-like samples with dark voice reciting in Russian. It does sound a lot like movie music and it's no coincidence but the project's theme. They introduced themselves saying "cinema starts with the arrival of the train. Old vauxhalls where we used to have our promenades listening to the music before setting on a journey to the outermost region of the country and self" - these words show the main ideas behind the music here: retro vibes, slow pace and fascination with cinema.

KAUAN - Ice Fleet (2021)

Led by Anton Belov, KAUAN, a post-metal/post-rock band from the East, have made music for well over a decade now, having debuted back in 2007, and made some serious stirr with an album Sorni Nai six years ago. They are back now with another phenomenal release, based on a true and eerie story, Ice Fleet. 

I was so sure this is a Finnish/Estonian band, after all, those languages are so difficult to master and the music's atmosphere is appropriate, but no, "KAUAN are from Russia, sing in Finnish, and are based in Ukraine, but their music is universally stirring". Which is helpful as the album is meant to tell the real story of ghost ships found in the Arctic and it's "based on real letters, articles and events. The album is separated into seven narrative chapters carefully described with an included libretto". If you want to get more into it, the band offers a series of FB posts that shed some light on this mystery, as well as, and it's not a joke, "a 40-page tabletop RPG adventure" that "will be available in print together with limited LP and CD versions of the album". Cool.

But coming back to music, the album offers the most frozen post-metal-in-spirit post-rock experience you can imagine. The heavy and overwhelming composition are at the same time blackgaze-like smooth and captivating to reflect the Arctic conditions, the temperature, the blizzards. Every sound here has its weight, not only the heavy guitars but also piano keys that resound in the blank spaces of Maanpako like sharp stars that announce disasters (or overwhelming post-metal screams in this case).

Olhava - Frozen Bloom (2021)

Olhava is a Russian band that is always somewhere there when I think of blackgaze/metal music from the East, I remember listening to Ladoga last year and how close it was to be posted about on this blog. Finally, with their fourth album Frozen Bloom, I have an occasion to mention them and their fantastically overwhelming music here.

The band admits to changing their modus operandi a bit, having two of the four massive tracks here "traditionally storm-like blackgaze passages" while the other two "are leaning towards more meditative drone experience". It is opened definitely with the former as The Queen of Fields makes a beautiful, in a rapid and heavy way, stream of post-metal music in an ethereal and sacral-like form. The feeling it gives is similar to visiting huge cathedrals the sheer scale of which brings the sense of fearful awe. This is what blackgaze should sound like and the Russians nailed it. The same is true for Frozen Bloom I, a shorter track but not milder one in the slightest.

They are separated by guitar ambient/drone-rich Adrift that gives not only a break from the hurricane of loudness but also, as was meant to be, a way to use the music for meditatative self-reflection. This all is inspired by the sudden changes that happen between winter and spring when early flowers can be surprised by the reappearing cold and "a sudden shift in temperature can leave them petrified and frozen back again like being punished by the Queen of Fields". And everyone can draw a reflection about their lives from this as well.

Secrets of the Third Planet - The Space Voyage (2021)

The Russian Secrets of the Third Planet already appeared on this blog with an interesting but short EP last year. Now they are proving that there's little they can't do, with a new, space ambient (in a way) album called The Space Voyage.

The origins of this album reach the Moscow Music Week in 2019 when the Moscow-based band presented their own live music for a Soviet sci-fi movie The Space Voyage from 1936. And as you could guess, the now-released new soundtrack is as old-school sci-fi as possible. There's not much of the modern, bass-saturated space ambient here, it is more about tangible, synth and old technology-like sounds. This is a concept album so everything is set in a similar tone, but Don't Worry Mom! may be just the most fitting music to this concept, making me think of the romantic and kind of naive old sci-fi texts by Lem or Asimov.

This retro approach is what clearly makes this album something unique. And tracks like Sleepy Boy, Signal or the noisier ones at the end of the release can easily function outside of the movie-soundtrack frame.

Russian Depression - Russian Depression (2021)

A band with one of the most dark-post-rock names ever, Russian Depression have just released their first EP called... of course, Russian Depression. They play guitar-based but also thick and heavy instrumental rock and definitely show some huge potential.

The EP consists of three tracks. Only three as they show that the musicians are able to create great post-rock music. The album opens with Broken Mirror, a slow-burning track that doesn't shock with the pace but gets more and more exciting with every second. The second one, Betrayal, seems to follow this pattern but this is quickly denied by a sudden change of pace with brutally heavy riffs being introduced halfway its length. They come and go, changing the place with moody keyboard notes that add to the dark atmosphere of the whole release. Error is already the finish and we can only hope for more material to be showed soon.

The Russian's talent was also acknowledged by the big guys, this album was mixed and mastered by Jannes Van Rossom and Jonas Everaert from the one and only dunk!studios.

Itai the Maid - Obdormiscere (2021)

What Itai the Maid, an artist from Moscow, makes, is definitely lo-fi and DIY-like but also very, very clever and charming. Her album Obdormiscere shows that you don't have to have the best quality of sound to create something great.

The album's title translates from Latin to "falling asleep" and also the title track's lyrics, in Russian this time, treat about the same thing. No wonder the whole thing has clear dream pop vibes: dispersed vocals, backing vocals, music haze in the backgrounds. However, there's quite a lot going on besides, making this music much more complex. More or less subtle electronic sounds add to the music's feeling of modernness, the Russian language sounds both mysterious and, at least to my Polish ears, familiar (and also t.A.T.u.-gone-dreamy-like), the omnipresent gothic, dark atmosphere makes it quite eery. And it's also pretty melodic so, as I said, a lot is going on on this album, including chip-tune-like dance madness in Insanire.

In general, the release is all about being gloomy but catchy, Gothic but fun and lo-fi but very much engaging. 

Obdormiscere costs... 20 USD, which is a bit weird to be honest.

April Rain - Mirror of Ether (2021)

The Petersburg-based post-rockers of April Rain appeared on this blog already, but it was very long time ago, back in 2016, and with a very different album from what they usually do, a piano-based A Melting Snowman EP for a guitar post-rock collective. So it's a high time to show what they can do now with a great example in form of their new album called Mirror of Ether.

The group is devoted to the instrumental and traditional sound of post-rock, early God Is an Astronaut and other legends would appreciate it. The compositions here are exclusively guitar-oriented and loud but not particularly massive or dark. There's a lot of the lively guitar play here with the energy and fun exposed in the foreground. This is a kind of music that would be a blast experienced live. That being said, there are also darker and moodier moments, especially the impressive and massive Towards the Native Uvalas or Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. Not to mention the impressive finale in Pathway that starts slow but at the end is pure and loud magic. It's no secret I prefer those heavier tracks, but it only means that most of the post-rock fans should be able to get something they like here.

Valotihkuu & Dynastor - Midnight Fairytales (2020)

This is a throwback to the end of the last year when DRONARIVM released this beautiful album that's the result of collaboration between the Russian artist Denis Davydov a.k.a. Valotihkuu and the Dutchman Maurits Nieuwenhuis, better known as Dynastor. Midnight Fairytales are exactly what the title suggests.

It is also a reference to Valotihkuu's previous album, Winter Lullabies. Still, it means that what we find on the album is both a bit dark and very much dreamy. The synthy textured backgrounds are so dense that they create a heavy layer upon which some beautiful sparks of keys and electronics thrive which is so beautifully done in Creature Comforts but also spilling forward to all of the tracks. This really feels like a fairy tale, the darkness of which is only comfortable and the message comforting. And, what's most important, the world of which is beautiful like the music here.

Also, the Bandcamp's description of the album really deserves a whole paragraph all for itself, it's such a perfect summary of what we hear: "Warm, flickering candle light illuminates grandfather's face as he opens the book. Outside insects lullaby the deep dark sky, reflected in the water, a slight rustling through the leaves. You wrap yourself in your bedsheets, waiting for grandfather to start reading, you are ready to go on a journey. He winds up the music box, looks at you with a warm smile and starts reading".

Лензвук - Монстр (2021)

The Russian band Лензвук had been releasing short singles for a while (I included their Глупые белые люди as one to check out back in 2019) before they finally released their first longer album. So here comes the EP called Монстр.

I revisited what I wrote back then and everything still seems legit: the Petersburg-based musicians make alternative rock with psychedelic and post-rock influences, mixing them with the vibes I always get from the Russians legends of Сплин. The very melodic vocals are also soften down a bit and thus they go a tiny bit towards what I would call dream rock. But at the same time, the way the songs and especially choruses are constructed, reminds me of post-punk songs - with Можно спасти as the best example. This only confirms how many different things influenced the band and what a rich music it is.

To further confirm that this is not just a random project taken from Bandcamp by coincidence, let's just mention that the last song features Sasha Galianov, the member of the Russian dance post-punk prodigies - Shortparis.

Powder! Go Away - Jól (2021)

Powder! Go Away is a band hailing from Moscow, who is all about guitar noise in the post-rock form. They are on the stage for a decade now as their debut album Laika Still Wants Go Home was released in 2011. Now, perhaps to honor this anniversary, the Russians showed their fifth one called Jól.

I'm pretty sure the release in January came a bit too late as the album's title (Scandinavian for Yule) and the pagan-like symbol on its cover suggest that the main theme should be Christmas or at least what it was way back in the pre-Christian times. (That said, the Orthodox Church celebrates it later so maybe it's actually perfect.) Also the songs' titles are filled with folklore and its darker side with gloomy forests and witches all over the place. Their music, on the other hand, is not as dark really. There are some fragments but otherwise it's very much instrumental rock music with some even rock'n'roll fragments. To admire guitar skills rather than to drown in the atmosphere. With the exception of Sun Loop, the loopy ambient-like atmosphere of which is something I dig. And, of course, my favourite track here, the moody finisher in And the Sun Will Return.

Dagmar Gertot - Os Lacrimale (2020) EN

First time I heard about Dagmar Gertot while posting about Darja Kazimira's album last year. It quickly turned out that the two artists are a perfect fit and their fascinating approach to the art in general inspires me all the time. The Russian released a new album and it has to be said that Os Lacrimale fits so well to their unique style.

It's difficult to describe the artist's music. For sure there's something from the Balkan and Roma people folklore there, certainly a lot of dark ambient and folk the liveliness of which is washed out so only the extremely strong atmosphere prevails. A lot of experiments with vocals too because the compositions here are as minimalist as can be, except of various forms of vocals, there's only single instruments playing in the backgrounds. But those are widely represented, from accordion to Bosnian folk batalo.

Gertot's music is not a simple one - there's tons of improvisation here with this very theatre-like mood with grotesque, unsettling and art in general. The artist's experiments, just like it is in her visual art works, is well though through and extremely unique. This atmosphere of the higher artism is her characteristic trait.

Show Me a Dinosaur - Plantgazer (2020) EN

For the first time I posted about the Russian band quite a while ago - four years to be specific, when they released their album Show Me a Dinosaur. Now the 4-piece post-metal-blackgaze band from Petersburg showed their fourth album and brought some heavy taste to the last days of this difficult year.

The album makes another release that's a direct response to the lockdown and pandemics situation in the world. And this also explains the mysterious title as according to the musicians, gazing at plants is the only thing people locked inside their houses during quarantine can do even during beautiful, sunny days. This and "trying to figure out answers to the many questions this new world has given rise to". Blackgaze on this album is very guitar-saturated and catchy, in many places more post-rock-like than metal if this can even be so easily said. The band with no problem generates the waves of sounds that sweeps the audience off and carry them to the most energetic worlds (Red River!).

The post-metal here is made mostly of the screaming vocals, but the artists also use more normal, choir-like chanting as in the great Marsh. The most important though is that the band is not about making the music strictly within a genre but they go wherever their heavy and guitar0filled hearts tell them to. I like it very much.

Gnot - Dead Birds (2020) EN

Dead Birds is a debut EP by the Petersburg-based band Gnot. The Russians show on it some loud guitars and impressive, throat-hurting post-metal.

Energy and anger are boiling from the very first notes of the album. Fast pace regulated by live drums and loud, although not overwhelming guitars plus the vocalist's furious screaming. Actually, is there a lot more to expect from a post-metal band? The artists emanate with all of this throughout the four tracks up to the guitar-saturated noisy finish in Poisoned Seed. This kind of music makes the spine thrill and one would rather stop everything they do to go and see the music live, the artists are surely able to transfer this dark energy to the audience. They should definitely be on your radars.

Pure Phasers - Push (2020) EN

Pure Phasers is a Russian shoegaze-space rock collective that releases music since 2016 when their first demo saw the light of the day. Now it's time fot another EP from them, one that will surely not allow them run away from comparisons with the genre's legends like, mostly, Spiritualized.

Indeed, even the visual side of the release make me think of the Rugby's supergroup's clinically cold album covers. But it's obviously not everything, the short EP gives us a solid dose of great music that audibly references the classic space rock. So we have here dispersed, very unclear vocals and avant-garde, non-obvious compositions (like Time, track based on one word). Then there are complex, multi-layered music arrangements based on guitars that, even when not very loud as in the ballad-like Touch the Sky, still dominate the Russians' music.

And, of course, the whole album is soaked with the outstanding, old-school vibes that make me think of Spiritualized so much that I find it shocking that it's something new and something from the East. The band released an LP earlier this year and I have to catch up with it soon.
