cintaadhesiva - FRONTEIRA PARAISO (2019) EN

Cintaadhesiva is a multimedia project the core of which is to put together poetry, music and visual arts. From the lyrics perspective led by Silvia Penas, from the music one by Jesús Andrés Tejada, the Spanish (Galician) collective does a lot so everybody could appreciate Iberian poetry without the knowledge of the language. Check it out on the January album FRONTEIRA PARAISO.

If anybody's tempted to depict the album to be recited text accompanied by music, the artists had prepared a reply for this: "It is an organic whole where text, music and video are not accompanied, but rather try to merge and confuse". The test doesn't function without the musi and the music without the text. That makes it especially sad that in order to fully appreciate the project's work one would have to speak Galician (even Spanish is not enough). On the other hand though, the poignant voice of Xabi Xil Xardón can be easily treated and appreciated as another kind of instrument.

And there are many of them. Cintaadhesiva inspires awe with the diversity of the music that sounds like one of the best soundtracks to an eerie spectacle. On one hand we have electric guitars, on the other the orchestral section, and they sometimes are more epic and sometimes more swinging (Lume). But always entirely unique.

Superficial - Montevideo (2017) EN

Superficial is an artistic nickname of Federico Schmid of Buenos Aires. The three sets of ideas he follows in his art (and perhaps in his life) are romanticism, symbolism and hedonism. The first two can be easily found in "Montevideo" since such enigmatic music is a symbol of its own. But hedonism? Maybe some of the people in the audience will adapt it for the soundtrack of their daily pleasures.

"Montevideo is a collection of song created in 2015-16 in one of Argentinian rooms. They're mixture of ambient, delicate noise and elements of post-rock, that forces in subconsciousness and feels itself at home there. It's also a musical journey. It has to take place somewhere near the capital city of Uruguay. Among sleeping oaks and the lakes of mercury in which one can bath. Doesn't it sound pleasant? It's also "pure melancholy, the one that cannot be explained, and uncertain future that come from the unpredictable fate".

Superficial - Montevideo (2017) PL

Superficial to pseudonim artystyczny Federico Schmida z boskiego Buenos w Argentynie. W swojej twórczości (a może i w życiu) kieruje się trzema ideami - romantyzmem, symbolizmem i hedonizmem. Pierwsze dwa łatwo odszukać na "Montevideo" bo tak enigmatyczna w przekazie sztuka musi sama w sobie być symbolem. Ale hedonizm? Być może dla części słuchaczy stanie się ona ścieżką dźwiękową dla zażywanych przyjemności.

"Montevideo" to zbiór utworów stworzonych w latach 2015-16 w jednym z argentyńskich pokojów. Są one mieszaniną ambientu, delikatnego noise'u i elementów post-rocka, który wpycha się w podświadomość i rozgaszcza się tam jak u siebie. Jest to również muzyczna podróż. Musi odbywać się gdzieś niedaleko stolicy Urugwaju. Pośród śpiących dębów i jezior rtęci, w których można wziąć kąpiel. Czy nie brzmi to rozkosznie? Jest to również "melancholia w najczystszej postaci, taka której nie da się wytłumaczyć i niepewność przyszłości, która nadchodzi z gestii nieobliczalnego losu".

Veenstra - Map of the Limbo (2016) EN

Here comes a real gem straight from the Land of Coffee. Veenstra means "sounds of forest, city, sea and beyond", it means also a band from Curitiba, Brazil. And their "Map of the Limbo" is one of the most complete albums of the last part of 2016.

It tells the story of an Ana who is looking for a map of her life (the one mentioned in the title) that would tell her which paths to take. But while searching she realizes that, surprise, surprise, there's no map and from now on Ana has to live without help, from one moment to another. "Map of the Limbo" is full of unique music, very intimate and sometimes very folk-like, especially in slow songs in which subtle vocal dances together with airy backing vocals (as in "Truth Be Told"). But it is a trap. Veenstra's music likes to get unchained and starts floating towards dangerously loud post-rock ("Memory Lake", "Curtains"). But it's still always full of magic and reminds me of dirty with noisy guitars folk by Fuzzy Lights. And the female vocal that cuts in in some songs sounds as if simply taken from Piano Magic. Veenstra likes also using quite non-obvious instruments - there's e.g. accordion, ukulele or bongos. The album is really leveled, it's difficult to point out one track that can be called "the best", some of them get stuck in your head though, like "Hard Heart" with touching chorus, "Mono no Aware" with monumental pipe organ-like sounds or "Memory Lake" that was already mentioned. Really difficult to chose.

The whole thing creates a perfectly composed story that catches you from the very first notes and won't let you forget about itself after the last crescendo. A strong candidate for the album of the year award (but which year? It was released on December 28th...)

Veenstra - Map of the Limbo (2016) PL

Nadchodzi prawdziwa perełka z Kraju Kawy. Veenstra to "dźwięki lasu, miasta, morza i jeszcze dalej", to również zespół z Kurytyby w Brazylii. A "Map of the Limbo" to jedna z najbardziej dojrzałych płyt końcówki 2016.

Opowiadać ma historię Any szukającej tytułowej mapy swojego życia, która mówiłaby jej jakimi drogami powinna podążać. Tymczasem wraz z poszukiwaniami nadchodzi refleksja, że, niespodzianka, taka mapa nie istnieje i Ana musi podążać sama od jednego momentu do drugiego. "Map of the Limbo" to niepowtarzalna muzyka, bardzo intymna i brzmiąca nieco folkowo, zwłaszcza w balladach, gdzie łagodny wokal tańczy w towarzystwie eterycznych chórków (jak w "Truth Be Told"). Jednak jest to często zmyłka bo ich muzyka lubi wyrywać się spod kontroli i szybować w stronę niebezpiecznie głośnego post-rocka ("Memory Lake", "Curtains"). W każdym momencie ma w sobie jednak mnóstwo magii i przypomina mi w tym pobrudzony gitarami folk Fuzzy Lights. Natomiast okazjonalny damski wokal wtrącający się w niektórych utworach wyjęty jest niemal z Piano Magic. Veenstra nie stroni od mniej lub bardziej oryginalnego instrumentarium - pojawia się na przykład akordeon, ukulele czy bongosy. Album jest bardzo równy, ciężko zdecydowanie wyróżnić jeden najlepszy utwór, na pewno zapadają w pamięć "Hard Heart" z przejmującym refrenem, "Mono no Aware" z monumentalnymi organami, wspomniane już "Memory Lake". Naprawdę ciężka sprawa.

Całość to doskonale skomponowana muzyczna opowieść, która wciąga od pierwszych nut i nie daje się zapomnieć po ostatnim crescendo. Mocny kandydat do płyty roku (tylko którego? Album wydany został 28 grudnia).

Isahi - Nisahilism (2016) EN

Nihilism - a belief that there is no reason for existence, a state that is perfect to scream it out to the world. Which is what Isahi - a one person project from South Korea, exactly does. "The rift between my world and this world completes my Nihilism, and this album is the stories of that" he writes. And since it's Isahi's nihilism it could only be called nisahilism.

The album begins with sounds of quite classical strings that made me think of Asian violinists' music enriched with some electronic. And this feeling goes through the whole album and, although they are sometimes only a background for some heavier sounds, they definitely give a unique flavour to the whole thing. And so the album flows - nice drifting strings and dreamy keys and an unsettling noise in the background. Which already in "The Plague" turns into roaring guitars and everything transforms from a dream into a real nightmare. The whole Isahi's nihilism is a mixture of dreaming and being lost in nightmares.

And I proclaim "Eating Bodies Together" the most romantic song title of 2016.

Isahi - Nisahilism (2016) PL

Nihilizm - przeświadczenie o braku celowości istnienia, stan, który nadaje się jak nic innego by wykrzyczeć go światu. Isahi - jednoosobowy projekt z Korei Południowej właśnie to robi. "Wyrwa między tym światem a światem moim dopełnia mój nihilizm i ten album właśnie o tym opowiada" pisze Koreańczyk. A że jest to nihilizm Isahiego siłą rzeczy nazywać się musi nisahilizmem.

Płytę otwierają całkiem klasyczne dźwięki smyczków przywodzące na myśl podbarwione elektroniką wyczyny azjatyckich skrzypków. I to wrażenie nie znika przez cały album, mimo że często są one jedynie podkładem pod cięższe nuty, nadają całości charakterystycznego brzmienia. I tak płynie sobie ta płyta - przyjemnie dryftujące smyczki i rozmarzone klawisze, a w tle niepokojący szum. Który już w "The Plague" zamienia się w końcu w charczące gitary, a wszystko zaczyna nagle niepokojąco przekraczać ze snu w koszmar. Cały nihilizm Isahiego to plątanina melodyjnych snów i dramatycznych sennych mar.

A "Eating Bodies Together" dostaje ode mnie nagrodę za najbardziej romantyczny tytuł '16.

Coastlands - Milieu Archives : Two (2016) EN

Loud ambient or barely hearable post-rock, somewhere on the border of the genres find themselves Coastlands, a quartet based in Portland. Their new album is a kind of speedpainting transferred into the field of music - as the artists themselves inform, it was created in just a week, recording and mastering included. Spontaneity makes emotions feel more real but in my humble opinion, the album sounds as if it was very carefully planned.

All the sounds match each other perfectly from the beginning up to the end, they build up an intriguing soundscape in which the dominant parts are reserved for guitars and, I guess, violins. There are also quite unsuspected moments like e.g. fast drumbeat lurking somewhere in the shadows of "Flora and Fauna". The whole thing is so attractive also because it can't be exactly marked as ambient or post-rock. If you feel interested you should also check the first part "Milieu Archives : One" that was released in April 2015.

Coastlands - Milieu Archives : Two (2016) PL

Głośny ambient albo ledwo słyszalny post-rock, gdzieś na granicy tych gatunków balansuje kwartet z Portland nazywający się Coastlands. Ich nowy album to rodzaj speedpaintingu przetranserowanego na pole muzyczne - sami artyści uprzejmie informują, że cały album powstał w przeciągu tygodnia, łącznie z nagraniem i masterowaniem. Z czym to się wiąże? Spontaniczność na pewno buduje prawdziwość emocji ale moim zdaniem album brzmi jakby był bardzo starannie zaplanowany.

Od początku do końca wszystkie dźwięki do siebie pasują i budują intrygujący muzyczny pejzaż, w którym dominują przesterowane gitary i bodajże skrzypce. Pojawiają się też całkiem niespodziewane momenty jak czające się na granicy słyszalności szybkie werble w utworze "Flora and Fauna". Całość jest niezwykle nastrojowa również dlatego, że umyka tradycyjnemu podziałowi na ambient i post-rock. Zainteresowani powinni sprawdzić wydaną w kwietniu 2015 część pierwszą "Milieu Archives : One".

Alles Club - 1999 (2016) EN

Some bands are created on the spur of the moment and after a while they have already two albums and several awards, other just *can't* get started. This is the story of Alles Club, the band that came through after Luiz Alberto Moura listened to a demo recorded by himself with some friends... 17 years before. "1999" is a tribute to this moment and, let's hope so, the beginning of the Brazilian (though recording also in Portugal and Switzerland) shoegazers' career.

The tribute is noticeable in the very first moments of the album with a piece of an old very low quality recording in the beginning of the first track, which has to be a reminder of the lost demo. Even though the album has only three songs, every one of them offers something special. "Eclipse" is a delicate and catchy melody with vocal full of reverbs, "Só Hoje" warms up slowly from a romantic ballad through full of backing vocals middle up to a real shoegaze ocean of sound. "Brilhar" is based on deep sounds of drums and some trumpets in the background. It's a pity it is also the end of the EP.

The band's motto is "sad music and loud guitars" which, together with their musical sensibility makes me wait for more material by the Brazilians.

Alles Club - 1999 (2016) PL

Niektóre zespoły powstają spontanicznie i po chwili mają już na koncie dwie płyty i trzy platyny, inne długo *nie chcą* powstać. Tak było z Alles Club, który zawiązał się na dobre po tym jak Luiz Alberto Moura odsłuchał dema nagrane przez siebie i przyjaciół... 17 lat temu. "1999" to hołd dla tego wydarzenia i, miejmy nadzieję, początek prawdziwej kariery brazylijskich (choć nagrywających też w Portugalii i Szwajcarii) shoegazerowców.

Hołd ten czuć też w momencie, gdy pierwszy utwór zaczyna się od kawałka starego nagrania w bardzo słabej jakości, z pewnością pochodzącego ze starego dema. Mimo, że płyta zawiera tylko trzy utwory, każdy coś sobą reprezentuje. "Eclipse" to łagodna i wpadająca w ucho melodia i wokal pełen eterycznych reverbów. "Só Hoje" rozkręca się nieśpiesznie z nastrojowej ballady przez naszpikowany chórkami środek w stronę shoegaze'owego oceanu dźwięku. "Brilhar" oparta jest natomiast na głęboko brzmiących uderzeniach bębna i instrumentów dętych trąbiących gdzieś w tle. Szkoda tylko, że całość się na niej kończy.

Hasłem przewodnim muzyków jest "smutna muzyka i głośne gitary", co w połączeniu z muzyczną wrażliwością sprawia, że ostrzę pazurki na więcej materiału od Brazylijczyków.

Lord Bendtner - Lord Bendtner (2016) PL

Lord Bendtner to dla mnie jedna z największych niespodzianek końca roku. Wydający w słowackiej wytwórni Z Tapes specjalizującej się w lo-fi'owej muzyce pościelowej artysta nagrał płytę, która jest dla mnie zupełnym zaprzeczeniem lo-fi.

"Lo-fi z wysokimi oczekiwaniami" napisał o swojej muzyce na Facebooku. Ja dodałbym więcej, muzyka LB jest doskonale zaplanowana, bogata w detale i niezwykle urzekająca. Wszystko - od instrumentów przez efekty po wokale i chórki zgrane są ze sobą idealnie i zmuszają do zachwytu nad poziomem skomplikowania tego "lo-fi'u". A do tego utwory artysty są bardzo chwytliwe - chyba najbardziej otwierający krążek "Carefully" z fenomenalnymi klawiszami. Ale na płycie jest też kilka innych perełek - jak choćby wyróżniający się "zepsutym" wokalem "Spider Clouds" czy super chaotyczny "Chéri".

Nie sposób nie skomentować nazwy projektu. "Lord Bendtner" to szydercze miano nadane duńskiemu piłkarzowi Niklasowi Bendtnerowi, który zasłynął tym, że poza słabą głównie formą prezentuje wysoką pewność siebie i samouwielbienie. I tym, że był w związku z należącą do duńskiej rodziny królewskiej Caroline Luel Brockdorff. Tymczasem muzyczny Lord na Bandcampie obrał sobie motto "dreaming of Bergkamp, bending it like Bendtner". To się nazywa skromność - nie wiem jak z jego umiejętnościami piłkarskimi ale jeśli chodzi o poziom muzyki to może mierzyć zdecydowanie wyżej niż Duńczyk, a nawet niż Holenderska legenda Arsenalu.

Lord Bendtner - Lord Bendtner (2016) EN

Lord Bendtner is one of my biggest surprises of this ending year. Publishing in Slovakian Z Tapes that specializes in lo-fi bedroom pop the artist recorded an album that for me denies everything I thought about lo-fi.

"Lo-fi with high aspirations" wrote about his music on his FB. I would like to add more, LB's music is perfectly planned, full of detail and absolutely charming. Everything, from the instruments, through various effects up to vocal and backing vocals match perfectly and force to awe over the level of complexity of this "lo-fi". But what is more, the songs are veeeery catchy - with the opening "Carefully" with great keys being the catchiest. There is more gems on the album, first of all "Spider Clouds" with "broken" vocals and super chaotic "Chéri".

I could hardly leave the project's name with no comment. "Lord Bendtner" is mocking title of Danish football player Niklas Bendtner who is famous for being rather poor sportsman with great ego. And that he was going out with Caroline Luel Brockdorff, a member of Danish royal family. Meanwhile, the musical Lord Bendtner chose a phrase "dreaming of Bergkamp, bending it like Bendtner" as his Bandcamp motto. This is some modesty! I'm not sure about his football skills but musically speaking he can definitely aim higher than the Dane and probably even higher than the Arsenal legend.

The Seismic Waves - Distorted Vision (2016) EN

Have you ever wondered about music underground of Mongolia? About the alternative stage of Ulaanbaatar? About shoegaze played by the heirs of Genghis khan? Most certainly. But I hadn't. I did, however, come across a great reason to do it. The reason is the Mongolian capital city-based The Seismic Waves.

They describe themselves as a blending of post-punk/shoegaze/indie pop/surf pop/post-rock, they sound like dreampopers who brought to their gig too many guitars. The vocal and the music sounds of warm, bedroom notes but the whole thing lies in a shadow of out-of-tune guitars waiting somewhere close. And they catch up already in the second track ("Next, please"). However, the band is at its top playing the most... catchy song - "Cosmic Lover", in which a long intro doesn't prepare us for a thrilling, though delicate melody. This song has a great flow, where every instrument fits and knows its role and creates background that could go on endlessly if it was up to me. The diversity of the album is underlined by the next track - "Slowly" in which distorted vocals and rough guitars make the band one of the best shoegaze groups I heard this year.

We should keep our fingers crossed for TSW's music to spread like real seismic waves far further than just the Middle Asia.

The Seismic Waves - Distorted Vision (2016) PL

Zastanawialiście się kiedyś nad muzycznym undergroundem Mongolii? Nad alternatywną sceną Ułan Bator? Nad shoegaze’em potomków Czyngis-chana? Z pewnością. Ja nie, ale trafiłem na genialny przykład, że byłoby warto - zespół ze stolicy Mongolii - The Seismic Waves. 

Przedstawiają się jako mieszanka post-punk/shoegazing/indie pop/surf pop/post-rock, a brzmią jak dreampopowcy, którzy wzięli na koncert za dużo gitar. W wokalu i w muzyce słychać ciepłe, pościelowe nuty, ale nad całością dominuje cień rozstrojonych gitar czyhających gdzieś obok, które dopadają już w drugim utworze (“Next, please”). Najlepiej wypadają jednak w najbardziej… przebojowym utworze - “Cosmic Lover”, w którym długie intro zupełnie nie przygotowuje na porywającą, chociaż delikatną melodię. Ta piosenka ma niesamowity flow, w którym każdy instrument jest na swoim miejscu i tworzy tło, które mogłoby ciągnąć się w nieskończoność. Różnorodność płyty podkreśla też następny kawałek, “Slowly”, gdzie rozproszony głos wokalisty i szarpiące gitary sprawiają, że to jeden z lepszych shoegaze'owych grup, jakie w tym roku słyszałem.

Trzeba trzymać kciuki, żeby muzyka TSW rozeszła się jak te fale sejsmiczne poza granice środkowej Azji.

2l8 - The Answer (2016) EN

Theatrical rock, is it a musical genre? Guitar music filled with stage expression, exaggerations and poetry that is made to influence. This is how I think of Greek 2l8 which after a great “Η Κλωστή (The Thread)” and albums with music written for, obviously, theatre plays Antigone and Don Juan came back earlier this year with their best album up to now, “The Answer”. The way they describe the album, next to its post-apocalyptic cover, does already sound as if it was declaimed from stage: “Good news! Τhe world has finally ended! (...) It is time to celebrate. For we still have each other, we still have the passion (...) We are post human, we are calling to send this last message to YOU. The future depends on that tiny bundle of energy you hide inside. Join us. The war is far from over. And we need you. Signed: He&She”.

The idea of post humans who gave up their souls and started to evolve in some frightening, apocalyptic direction appears throughout the album. Those people are never fulfilled (“The wolf in me, is still hungry” - Post Human), they have no emotions (“Since that day I can only see / From the eternal perspective / I grow colder” - Learning to Breathe) and are very lonely (“The nameless grave that I dig for myself on bad days / It’s a handwritten list of the people I once knew, the people that left me” - Desire! Desire! Desire!). It all speaks very clearly, directly into your frightened soul. And it’s supported with fantastic melodies, surprisingly catchy music and delicate electronic filings. And first of all, with several different vocals, including something that sounds like gregorian chorales sung alongside guitar riffs.

Equally important is the fact that the album was crowdfunded and all the income will be given to help solving the refugee crisis in Greece, the most tangible trace of 2l8’s apocalypse coming and our western societies’ posthumanization.

Teatralny rock, istnieje taki gatunek? Gitarowe granie pełne scenicznej ekspresji, przejaskrawień i poezji, która chce wpływać. W taki sposób myślę o greckim 2l8, którzy po świetnym “Η Κλωστή (The Thread)” i muzyce do, oczywiście, spektakli Antygony i Don Juana, wrócili w tym roku z najlepszą swoją płytą - “The Answer”. Już sam opis płyty towarzyszący postapokaliptycznej okładce brzmi jak wygłaszany ze sceny: “Dobre wieści! Świat nareszcie się skończył! (…) To czas na świętowanie bo wciąż mamy siebie nawzajem i nasza pasję. (...) Jesteśmy postludźmi i wołamy właśnie do CIEBIE. Przyszłość zależy od tego małego pakunku energii, który ukrywasz w sobie. Przyłącz się do nas, wojna jeszcze się nie skończyła. Podpisano: ona i on”.

 Idea postludzi, którzy zrzekli się duszy i zaczęli ewoluować w jakimś strasznym, apokaliptycznym kierunku pojawia się na całej płycie. Ludzie ci są nigdy nie spełnieni (“wilk we mnie wciąż jest głodny” - Post Human), pozbawieni emocji (“od tego dnia patrzę na wszystko jedynie z perspektywy wieczności i jestem coraz chłodniejszy” - Learning to Breathe) i samotni (“anonimowy grób, który kopię dla siebie w złe dni to odręczna lista ludzi, których kiedyś znałem, a którzy mnie zostawili” - Desire! Desire! Desire!). Wszystko to przemawia niezwykle wyraźnie, prosto do przerażonej duszy. A poparte jest fantastycznymi melodiami, nadzwyczaj przebojową muzyką i delikatnymi elektronicznymi zagraniami. A przede wszystkim wieloma różnymi wokalami, z których część przypomina chorały gregoriańskie wyśpiewywane do gitarowych riffów. 

 Nie bez znaczenia jest też fakt, że album został crowdfundowany, a zyski z jego sprzedaży przeznaczone zostaną na przeciwdziałanie kryzysowi emigracyjnemu w Grecji, najbardziej namacalnemu świadectwu nadchodzącej apokalipsy i posthumanizacji naszych społeczeństw.

Endless Melancholy - A Quiet Recollection (2016) PL

W tym tygodniu wycieczka na zieloną Ukrainę. Na początek ciężka sprawa - niekończąca się opowieść gdy opowiadasz sobie przeszłość, za którą rwie ci się serce. Melancholia. Niektórzy mają ją we krwi i w kościach ale Endless Melancholy i jego muzyka potrafi wywołać ją i w najoporniejszych. Oleksiy Sakevych pokazuje nam świat wypełniony muzycznymi krajobrazami wygranymi na pianinie. Some have it in their blood and in their bones but Endless Melancholy and his music can trigger it even in the most resistant ones. Across the Snow - Ghost Ships (2014) PL

Solowy projekt młodziutkiego Jacksona Hardena z Provo w Utah. Spójrzcie na zdjęcia w Googlach po wpisaniu tej nawy. Nad miastem wznosi się wielki, ośnieżony masyw Wasatch, można sobie tylko wyobrazić jak dorastanie w jego cieniu uczy pokory i zachwytu nad biosiłami. W muzyce Hardena słychać tych mroźnych bogów mieszkających tuż pod sklepieniem niebieskim.

Ambientowe piękno muzyki AtS przypomina właśnie przedzieranie się przez śnieg, gdy pod butami chrzęści śnieg, a policzki drętwieją od zimna. A poza tym nie dzieje się nic, jest tylko biała statyczność. Ambient.

Zupełnie jak pod wodą, w głębinach arktycznych mórz. To ważne, bo płyta opowiada historie statków widmo od XVIII wiecznego SS Octavius po pojawiającego się współcześnie u wybrzeży Alaski SS Baychimo. Słychać to w muzyce, gdy statki odzywają się co jakiś czas impulsami radarów albo dnem szorującym po płytko zanurzone skały.
