The Psalms is a solo project of Noah Swinney from RSA and if anyone has ever wondered if there is something that could be called afro shoegaze, the Psalms is probably the closest to that label.
The afro part is present first of all in the uncanny rhythmicality of Swinney's music. Together with clearly audible drums, there are also maracas and other ways to distract your attention. Besides, this project is able to reach from time to time this weird trance that is so unique for African folk music (as in the first track, "Between Spiders"). Also the combination with general mood is interesting, as "Between..." is clearly rhythmical and energetic but it ends with particularly gloomy interlude in "Doom Is Darker...".
However, the whole things sounds definitely like a mixture of experimental music (important tags being shoegaze/dreampop/trip-hop) with African roots. And this combination sounds wonderful ("Between...", "Wedding Song") making the audience both dance and drown in thoughts.
