Lune - Into Eternal Sleep (2026)

A mysterious project from the mountains of Austria (or the Danube's valley of Austria possibly, but I wanted to be as epic as the music here). The artist known only as M with no social media as far as I know, released what seems to be his 4th album and filled it with very, very very cinematic, if not pompous metal music.

I have little idea on the divisions between metal genres and, frankly, I rarely care. I usually listen only to the atmospheric ones that border post-metal as close as possible. You can safely say that Lune's two-track album is one of those exceptions. Atmospheric to the core, sounding like a soundtrack to an epic, possible viking-themed (probably because of the title) cinematic production, even if slightly lacking on the quality front, Into Eternal Sleep sounds more like a movie score than a metal album which I count as a big plus. The compositions are interestingly complicated and beautifully unhurried, the more metal passages really seem to underline something important, a pinnacle point that really matters.

The rest of the compositions are more ethereal than heavy, more like a dream played with guitars and keys. The valleys. But when the cinematic ecstasy kicks in, you certainly know it.

Loather - Eis (2023)

While I first posted about the Austrian band of Loather back in 2018, this year's Eis is their first LP ever. And it was quite worth waiting for since the album is a great example of rough and heavy music that is also particularly mesmerizing.

The band's road to the debut release has been rough with pandemics problems and line-up changes along the way. Luckily they made it. And Eis is filled with captivating music. From the very first notes, it attacks the audience with rough guitar sounds and heavy and dark atmosphere. The lo-fi vibes add to the sincerity of the album, making it even more striking I feel. On Eis, the band dances between black metal and shoegaze quite regularly and with fantastic grace too. Some parts are clearly (post-) black metal with angry screams and fittingly aggressive guitars, but some other are smoothed down by attractive, almost dreamy vocals. Still. very, very loud. And really, really good.

MOLLY - Picturesque (2023)

Although I missed it on this blog, MOLLY's debut album All That Ever Could Have Been was a true highlight of 2019 for me. And as the sophomore Picturesque is at least as good as the first one, it simply had to appear in here.

The Austrian duo's post-rock music formed as indie rock compositions has been compared to variety of other bands, including most notably Sigur Rós. For me, it is close to what The Boxer Rebellion used to make at their beginnings: high-pitched, soft and emotional vocals in melodic compositions for which the backgrounds are pure post-rock sounds. The new album is opened exactly like that: the single track Ballerina is fairly short and radio-worthy, but at the same time shows the heavy post-rock influences, audible from the very first notes. But already the second song is very different: four minutes of more traditional artsy and indie composition, followed by almost 10 minutes-long pure post-rock masterpiece.

The whole album balances between indie art rock and post-rock noisy crescendos. This combination is both tear-jerking and euphoric, lyrical and heavy. In this unorthodox approach to the genres, MOLLY remind me also about their compatriots from Our Ceasing Voices - while the music is slightly different, the overall atmosphere is similar.

A Canyon in the Sea - Lost Landscapes (2022)

Lost Landscapes makes a debut album not only for A Canyon in the Sea but also for the label Polawa Records. However, the Austrian artist made sure to create work that one would not associate with the word "debuting" - it's fantastic both quality- and idea-wise and should be recommended to all the fans of post-rock music.

The compositions here have an interesting trip-hop-like electronica flavour to the backgrounds while still being an absolute bliss of guitar-heavy noise (which in the final track transforms into glitchy kind of neoclassical piano backgrounds and I'm here for it!). This slow and unorthodox way of developing the compositions is actually outstanding; it's not so surprising then that the longest track such as Glass seem to have this unstoppable but never-hasty might like an incoming storm or a moving glacier.  But this is also present in the shorter ones and this is something that rarely happens. It's heavy and loud but is also more focused on generating this eery atmosphere than crushing the audience with energy. 

What should be also pointed out, this is a solo project but while many solo projects like this sound very much like a lonely guy in a bedroom with a guitar, A Canyon in the Sea managed to create a blizzard of sound that could as well be a work of a full-sized band and I appreciate it a lot.

Psychedelic noise pop from Austria, the trio play lively indie pop music entirely drowned in the reverb atmosphere and subtle noise. But when it's the time, they can also show some louder guitars. And there's also this very tasteful cover art. The musicians have created some EP-s and they should be looked into. The two tracks cost 2 EUR.

Musical persona of Sean H. from Michigan who creates dark, obscure soundscapes. The single is a droning version of a track from the incoming debut EP but also "a reminder that everything decays". It costs whatever you want to pay (and doesn't last endlessly).

After a year from the last release, the English band show some new music, their ambient/dream pop that is fittingly described as "a hazy drone with cymbals drenched in reverb" and with some other interesting effects. The two tracks cost 2 USD.

It's crazy how catchy this song from the Californian veterans who play together for over 20 years is. A bit of post-punk, a but of dream pop, super distinctive and expressive lyrics and there's also this rapping fragment. Diverse and engaging. Two versions of the single cost2 USD.

le_mol - White Noise Everywhere (2020) EN

The Raimund Schlager and Sebastian Götzendorfers duo from Wien make up a project called le_mol, one of the most interesting on the Austrian electronic-instrumental scene. They just proved it with an album White Noise Everywhere.

The gentlemen don't seem to take the music labels seriously, they describe their own works as "post-whatever. ok, we play rock music". I like the other description better: "the self-defined two-man loop orchestra" that shows the repetitiveness and mesmerizing abilities of the project on one hand, on the other the grandeur and complexity of some of its fragments. The artists like to go from ambient landscapes up to climactic guitar compositions only to get back to delicate soundscape. 

I like Hands, a track filled with processed vocals that make up an ambiance of a modern ballad that eventually finishes in the guitar-filled beginning of Takotsubo in which, on the other hand, the floor belongs to the impressive drums and piano keys appearing out of thin air. This album is full of surprises of this kind and this is its strong side.

Duet Raimund Schlager i Sebastian Götzendorfers z Wiednia tworzy projekt le_mol, jeden z ciekawszych na austriackiej scenie elektroniczno-instrumentalnej. Właśnie potwierdzają to nowym albumem White Noise Everywhere.

Panowie z zespołu chyba nie biorą muzycznych labelek na serio, sami piszą o swojej muzyce "post-cokolwiek. dobra, gramy rocka". Bardziej podoba mi się jednak określenie "samozwańcza dwuosobowa orkiestra loopów", które oddaje z jednej strony repetetywność i hipnotyzujące właściwości projektu, z drugiej orkiestralny rozmach i złożoność niektórych fragmentów. Artyści lubią przechodzić od ambientowego pejzażu po zamaszyste gitarowe kompozycje i z powrotem w delikatny soundscape.

Podoba mi się Hands, utwór wypełniony przetworzonymi wokalami tworzącymi nastrój nowoczesnej ballady, która w końcu zakończona jest przez bardzo gitarowy początek Takotsubo, w którym z kolei króluje efektowna perkusja i pojawiające się znikąd klawisze pianina. Ta płyta pełna jest takich niespodzianek i w tym leży jej siła.

Nowa płyta z wytwórni City By Night Records to piękny i nastrojowy soundscape w wykonaniu dość tajemniczego projektu Jupiter Himself. Posłuchajcie Isolation.

To płyta z gatunku tych, których trzeba wysłuchać bo opisać ją ciężko. Na pewno prezentuje ona soundscape'y masywne od nawarstwiających się elektronicznych dźwięków, które generują w słuchaczu mieszaninę zachwytu i smutku. Artysta stojący za projektem umiejętnie je skomponował tak by stosunkowo niedługa płyta wydawała się wyczerpującą projekcją tytułowej izolacji. Słuchajcie w deszczowe wieczory.

The new album from City By Night Records makes a beautiful and moody soundscape made by quite a mysterious project called Jupiter Himself. Let's listen to Isolation.

It's an album that has to be listened to as it's difficult to describe it. Surely it shows soundscapes that are massive with the layers of electronic sounds generating a mixture of awe and sadness in the audience. The artist behind the project skillfully composed them so the not-so-long album would seems to be enough to describe the title's feeling of isolation. Listen to it during rainy evenings.

Spirit Desire - 'cause the sun is gone (2019) EN

Among their inspirations, the Austrian Spirit Desire enlist Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Weezer, emo and punk genres, but in reality when you listen to their music you get very surprised. On their April album 'cause the sun is gone, they included some world class shoegaze pieces.

As their strongest side, they point the particularly emotional lyrics, no doubt the emo music influence. They're sung with strongly blurred vocals reminding me of the ones by Mark Gardener of RIDE. The music layer is made of very loud guitars and very clear drums that slow down the music, giving it some slowcore pace. As a whole it makes the album intimate, a bit nostalgic, a bit dreamy and sounding like Alcest. Just as it should be.

Wśród swoich inspiracji austriacki Spirit Desire wymienia Dinosaur Jr., Nirvanę, Weezera, emo i punk, a tymczasem, gdy posłucha się ich muzyki można się solidnie zdziwić. Na swojej kwietniowej płycie 'cause the sun is gone zawarli bowiem przedniej jakości shoegazeowe kawałki. 

Jako swoją mocną stronę dodają natomiast emocjonalne teksty, prawdopodobnie to wzięło się z muzyki emo. Wyśpiewywane są rozmytym, eterycznym wokalem przywodzącym na myśl na przykład Marka Gardenera z RIDE. Warstwa muzyczna natomiast to wyraźne, głośne gitary i bardzo słyszalna perkusja nadająca całości raczej niespiesznego tempa. Tworzy to wszystko klimat trochę intymny, trochę nostalgiczny i trochę rozmarzony brzmiący nieco jak Alcest. Taki jaki powinien być.

Archivist - Triumvirate (2019) EN

From time to time Archivist shows to the world albums that can hardly be ignored. The band consisting of musicians from three countries, have just released an album called Triumvirate that in an impressive way ends the trilogy of albums filled with loud blackgaze/post-metal with a message.

The band's music is based on a simple but very interesting idea, it is supposed to be records of the archivist who lived through the end of the world that we know and "begins to record her memories of the world left in turmoil by humanity's shortsightedness and greed". It's worth to read the longer version of this story available on the band's Facebook page to have something to think about. So we have a band that is pro-environmental and antifascist so it's a good way to start listening to some music. 

And the music is described by the band themselves as "ethereal metal" and indeed - the guitar sounds are soothed by the sounds of synths and subtle electronics but stil remaining loud and poignant. Just like the screaming vocal from time to time supported by its airy equivalent (as in the great The Endurance).

Archivist - Triumvirate (2019) PL

Archivist co jakiś czas pokazuje płyty, obok których nie da się przejść obojętnie. Zespół składający się z muzyków  z trzech różnych krajów wydał właśnie album Triumvirate wieńczący w efektowny sposób trylogię wypełnioną głośnym blackgaze'em/post-metalem z przesłaniem.

Muzyka zespołu oparta jest na prostym a efektownym pomyśle, jest to zapis tytułowej archiwistki, która przeżyła apokalipsę i koniec cywilizacji jaką znamy i która "begins to record her memories of the world left in turmoil by humanity's shortsightedness and greed". Zresztą warto przeczytać dłuższą wersję opisu dostępną na facebookowym koncie zespołu, jest nad czym pomyśleć. Mamy więc do czynienia z zespołem pro-ekologicznym i antyfaszystowskim, co jest miłym przyczynkiem do muzyki.

A ta określana jest przez sam zespół jako "ethereal metal" i faktycznie - gitarowe dźwięki wygładzone sa brzmieniem syntezatora i subtelną elektroniką a mimo to pozostają głośne i przejmujące. Tak jak krzykliwy wokal wspomagany od czasu do czasu przez swój eteryczny odpowiednik (jak na przykład w świetnym The Endurance).

Doomina - Orenda (2018) EN

Genre: post-rock, influences: yes, information: "something something Doomina". Those artists from Austria have no time for bullshit and instead of writing essays about themselves, they let the music introduce them. Recently they've done that on their fourth and the most developed album called Orenda.

Their music is made of hard, masculine post-rock bordering tightly with doom-like guitars and southern climate. Still though, there's so much imaginativeness and grace in their music that I for once, although quite tired of doom metal, became a fan. The album is long, varied and well thought through as a whole. Some of the most interesting fragments involve the drum-oriented middle part of Soyuz II, crushingly guitar-filled Synaesthesia, or the epic composition of The Thing With Feathers.

When the Austrians gain speed, there's nothing that can stop them. The energy and power hidden in their guitar music does not only overwhelm but also inspires. Even though there's a short fragment of peace in Tiny Danza, the band is quick to come back to the chosen path of epic noise.

Doomina - Orenda (2018) PL

Gatunek: post-rock, inspiracje: tak, informacje: "coś tam coś tam Doomina". Austriacy widocznie nie tolerują bullshitu i zamiast pisać o sobie eseje, wolą przedstawić się muzyką. Robią to na swojej czwartej już, ale najbardziej rozbudowanej płycie Orenda.

Ich muzyka to twardy, męski post-rock graniczący bardzo cienką granicą z doomowymi gitarami i południowym klimatem. Mimo wszystko jednak, jest w niej na tyle dużo polotu i gracji, że mi, osobie doomem znużonej, słucha się jej fantastycznie. Album jest długi, zróżnicowany i przemyślany jako całość. Kilka interesujących fragmentów: zdominowany perkusją środek Soyuz II, przygniatający gitarami Synaesthesia, czy epicka kompozycja The Thing With Feathers.

Kiedy Austriacy się rozpędzą, nic ich nie zatrzyma. Energia i moc ukryta w tej gitarowej muzyce jest nie tylko przygniatająca ale również zaraźliwa. Nawet jeśli płyta daje chwilę odpoczynku w Tiny Danza, szybko wraca do obranej wcześniej drogi epickiego hałasu.

Szalenie głośny i chaotyczny post-rock z Tokyo, doskonała muzyka. Dwa utwory kosztują jednak aż 16 złotych (500¥).

Coma. - Agony | Hophek (2018) EN

A trio from Austria that can describe well what the Hell is to their audience. And the musicians of Coma. with a dot have a very clear idea about this because their "own personal hell" is humanity and when you hear about all the things happening all around the world, you can barely deny it. The Austrians scream out their opinions on this good as hell album - "Agony | Hophek".

It is opened by a great intro - "IXIIXI", that may not be metal as such but includes so much of uneasiness and horror that makes your spine chill. Obviously, a great work here do whispers and screams decorating the track. The next song brings the thing the musicians love - automatic rifle fast drums and aggressive guitars being a background for two kinds of vocals - raging, high-pitched screaming and demonic, deep growl.

You can hear despair and musical sob in every f the tracks, and even when in some places you can catch a glimpse of "clear" vocal, you can't get it as a normal thing. Even when in the middle of "Forsaken" the atmosphere is being calmed down by very moody keys, your normal state is hard to reach. The closest to peace is perhaps  "Sleepwalker V", a beautiful ballad with ominous whispers are far away and even when they finally take over the stage, the foreground is still occupied, perhaps surprisingly, by piano keys. Although you should rather say that during the whole album it belongs to the feeling of danger and desperation.

Trójka z Austrii, która potrafi przybliżyć każdemu słuchaczowi czym jest piekło. A muzycy Comy z kropką  mają bardzo konkretne zdanie na ten temat bo ich "własne osobiste piekło" to ludzkość i dowiadując się o kolejnych wydarzeniach na świecie nie da się nie przyznać temu racji. Austriacy wykrzykują swoje rację na piekielnie dobrej płycie "Agony | Hophek".

Płytę otwiera znakomite intro - "IXIIXI", które być może nie jest metalowe per se ale z pewnością ma w sobie tak dużo niepokoju i horroru, że powoduje prawdziwe ciary. Na pewno wydatnie przyczyniają się do tego szepty i krzyki upiększające cały utwór. Dopiero o kolejnego utworu znać w czym lubują się muzycy. Szybka jak karabin maszynowy perkusja i agresywne gitary są niejako tylko tłem dla dwóch rodzajów wokalu - wściekłego, wysokiego krzyku i demonicznego, głębokiego growlu.

W każdym z utworów usłyszeć można rozpacz i muzyczny szloch, nawet, gdy w kilku miejscach przebija się czysty wokal, nie sposób odebrać go normalnie. Nawet, gdy w środku "Forsaken" klimat starają się uspokoić bardzo klimatyczne klawisze, nie da się tak szybko wrócić do normalności. Najbliżej spokoju jest w "Sleepwalker V", przepięknej balladzie, w której złowrogie szepty czyhają tylko w tle, a gdy w końcu przejmują scenę to na pierwszym planie wciąż jest, dość niespodziewanie, pianino. Chociaż należałoby powiedzieć, że jest na nim, przez cały album poczucie zagrożenia i desperacja.
