LOLOET - Circle of Echoes (2026)

When I listened to this album, I didn't know the story around it. But apparently LOLOET is a project centred around Ayaka Wada, a j-pop singer and an idol known from girlsband Angerme, who decided to create... ambient pop? How cool is that?!  What's more important, the effects are fascinating: the slowcore, jazzy and experimental pop feels both artsy and fun to listen to. This February, the band released their debut album and it's definitely worth checking out.

Wada says she wanted to make music "that resembles the paintings of Mark Rothko" (yes, those bright and colourful minimalist and abstract pieces) and I... don't see it. I mean the abstraction is certainly there, but this music is far from minimalism. But it's very, very possible I don't focus on the right thing, I have no idea about paintings. My point is that music here is very, very rich. Yes, it may start as ambient background, but it quickly evolves into jazzy and neoclassical structures that ripple around and change shapes all the time while Wada's soft and airy vocals charm their way into the listeners' hearts.

It's such a fascinating journey this album: you can't guess what's going to happen next. Some compositions are vocalless and they are magical too (I'm looking at you, les yeux) and some become a poetry reading that touches upon important, sociopolitical themes. The thing that makes this music special is also the use of trumpet sounds: Chan keng's doing what he can to add this trumpet charisma to the compositions without overwhelming the listener, which I really appreciate.

Hilary Woods - Night CRIÚ (2025)

Another female voice from Dublin this week, but it couldn't be more different than the energetic post-punk of SPRINTS. Five years after the fantastic Birthmarks, the ambient pop slash drone soundscapes artist Hilary Woods comes back with a surprising change in her music, shifting the style towards artistic slowcore sounds.

As the description of the album suggests, Woods focuses a lot on her voice here. But I can't say the vocals really feel like the main focus when they are joined by some beautiful instrumental slowcore-like instrumental sections. I can't NOT feel like the ambient/drone element was traded for the artsy and I quite appreciate it. The atmosphere doesn't change though: the music is as moody and intimate as ever, it's like listening to whispers of a loved one but there are also violins.

The description of the album says a lot of things, I'm not gonna try to understand the more contrived fragments, but I'm sure smarter people may find it inspiring. I will stick to the music as it feels strangely straight-forward, even when Woods is joined by a child choir (actually, I really like Taper), and artistically satisfying.

Gloios - Polvorosa (2025)

A beautiful mess from Brazil; Rafael Xavier aka Gloios, the artist from São Paulo, himself calls his new album a mess that encompasses a shitload of various music genres. But the coherent slowcore warm atmosphere brings everything together, making Polvorosa a beautiful, musical journey.

Let me quote the artist further: "post-rock, ambient music, metal, dream pop..." but also Brazilian music like MPB, forró, samba, xote, baião which I know nothing about, all of this makes up the third album in Xavier's discography. Everything is based on slightly industrial electronica, but there is also some, very distant, very echoey and everything but clear vocals. And it doesn't really matter because you can hear the genres like you can see pebbles in muddy water. There is something there, but who knows what exactly? And the water is warm and welcoming, slightly terrifying, but you have to go in and let it go.

I love it when music clearly shows where it comes from and you can have little doubt that this is the sound from Brazil. There is so much going on there: various rhythms, paces, dance moves, everything slightly hidden but also clearly felt. Just listen to the weirdness of Boiafria or my favourite, very mysterious Ficha.

Lazy Legs - Tower (2025)

It's been 8 years (!) since the Oregon band Lazy Legs appeared on this blog with their EP called Chain of Pink. Now, after what seems to be some changes in the line-up, they released their third album and enchanted me with their minimalist yet very airy take on slowcore kind of noise music.

The artists admit to take inspirations from a variety of genres, mixing "shoegaze, grunge, slowcore and doomgaze" into one, moody kind of music. It surely is slow, it's very airy and based on the rougher nature of guitar sounds. It feel also a lot like a letter of admiration to minimalist rock music usually made by duos (I'm thinking The Kills, but maybe it's because I've been listening to them a lot recently). It's maybe because the band now only consists of Laura Wagner and Michael Tenzer while before, there was also Nicholas Piontek playing drums. Regardless of the reasons, the band's music feels now closer to the audience, honest and beautiful in this desert, grunge way.

The rough guitar makes here a beautiful dialog with vocals that are not only made airy. They are literally very often just backing vocals playing the main part of the song. It makes the compositions well-balanced but also very, very dreamy regardless of the heaviness of the music.

Kwoon - ODYSSEY (2025)

Oh, wow, a comeback that I did not expected nor have heard about! But what a beautiful surprise it is! I remember the project led by Sandy Lavallart's fantastic music from 10 years ago (the single called Swan) and 15 years ago (their last album release). This year they are back with a long and instantly memorable (and fittingly named) ODYSSEY.

This kind of post music that doesn't really match the common definition of post-rock, is not folky enough to call it post-folk, much rather sits somewhere there sounding beautiful. It is what Her Name Is Calla did and what Piano Magic were so good at, it is what slowcore and post-rock with a lot of artistic soul can sound like, it is one of the most intimately meaningful kinds of music out there. The artsy slowrock of the French band is stunning. Sometimes it is slow and quiet, sometimes it gets louder with the help of the vast range of classic instruments to create orchestral moments of euphoria (like in my favourite track Jayne) fueled with choire-like backing vocals (so beautiful in Life). 

But the vocals are equally important, creating the folk-like focus on narration and words. The soft vocals sound emotional and very close to the audience, sometimes contrasting with the orchestral grandeur of the music. Every composition is complex and artistically engaging yet still very welcoming for any newcomer who happens to discover this band. And if they do, they are very lucky.

Sterile Cuckoo - Until All the Flocks Are Gathered (2025)

Dream pop that feels both intimate, melancholic and filled with life and emotions? Lively ambient meeting sadcore vocals? This is how Sterile Cuckoo's third album feels and I gotta say, there is little that could be done to grab my emotions more.

The name of the project is taken from a novel by John Nichols that was adapted to the screen by Alan Pakula so you know it's bound to be about interhuman emotions and the music proves is so well. The lo-fi atmosphere certainly help as well as the artist feels so close to the audience that you can almost hear his breathing (this closeness reminds me of what Raised by Swans does so well). But you can't say it's a monotonous singer/songwriter type of lo-fi project. 

Sterile Cuckoo creates compositions in which "haunting synths weave a tapestry of ethereal textures, interspersed with cascading guitar lines that radiate like distant starbursts", making soundscapes that are bursting with life while still feeling slow and contemplative. I love the addition of strings in Spring and Loss that is not too invasive but fits right in. Similarly the glitchy effects in Grave Memories and many more. Elements that enrich the compositions, without overtaking them and overshadowing the clue. And yes, the artis admits what we know already, the music is designed as a tool for meditation, for taking a while to reflect on your lives, on your emotions. And it works, maybe even too much.

memoryloop - being and nothingness (2024)

They started as "pedestrian", now they create their music as memoryloop; they look like your average nugaze band of the latest generation, but they make music that is a tasteful combination of slow shoegaze and post-rock; they are from California, but they music says "somewhere cold". This is the second debut of the band and it feels amazing.

They make music to "give [the artists'] silly little lives a little bit of meaning" and, in my books, it's just the best reason to do that. From the look and feel of their image, I wasn't expecting a long, classically post-rock track to open the album. It's this sort of surprises that catches your attention, definitely. And it really sets up the tone of the whole thing: it is particularly solemn and melancholic. Slow. Deep. It sounds like a narcoleptic ambient pop that is mashed up with guitar post-rock tracks from time to time. Makes me think of Midwife if she played with, say, Ranges. Amazing combo.

I love when an album takes different, sometimes very different elements and yet succeeds in making them sound like a whole. Especially when they are a real party for borderline melancholics. This is my vibe.

Ritual Cloak - Vanished in Transition (2023)

The Welsh project Ritual Cloak consists of Daniel Barnett, (known from the post-rock outfit Samoans) and producer Andrew Sanders. Together they released a new EP this year, which is said to be a change in their musical direction.

Vanished in Transition is filled with slow, introspective compositions that don't hurry anywhere and flow peacefully but also melancholically on and on. The post-rock origins of Barnett are pretty audible as the compositions are based on delicate guitar noise and slow, pulsating beats as well as some jazzy influences here and there. This corresponds brilliantly with the soft, sad vocals that feel like they were there but not really. Like a mist in the distance of this soundscape. It's no wonder that the album was born from the band's "fascination of disappearing", everything here is so airy that may as well suddenly disappear into thin air.

Rosa Vertov - Reflected In (2023)

The truest noisy dream pop band in Poland, Rosa Vertov have just released their new EP. It's been only two years since their second LP called Reflected In but a lot managed to change in the meantime, with the vital change in the band's line-up as the main thing..

As Olga Gniadzik left the band, it is now a trio and this fact reflects on the music they play. Now, their slow and melancholic music is more minimalist which makes it in turn more introvert and self-reflective. Particular elements of their music have more space and it's easy to focus on them separately, admiring the use of grunge'y guitar, noisy backgrounds and fantastic melodies. This is what I like about their music the most: while focusing on the tear-jerking atmosphere, they are perfectly able to smuggle some mindblowing melodies (like in Fading Out for example).

They say that their music "breaks dream pop dreaminess with a good dose of nightmarish unease and melancholy". The way the artists thick up the atmosphere with the use of backing vocals and organ-sounding keys is definitely top class. The album's finish in All We Have Must Be Enough makes the whole experience drastically heavier and more melancholic and I'm here for it.

40 Days Without Water - 40 Days Without Water (2022)

Coming from France, 40 Days Without Water are one of the latest additions to Shore Dive Records' portfolio. A noisy and melodic addition. The trio released new album last March and it's an interesting mix of psychedelic genres resulting in a moody dream pop work.

I like how genuine and intimate this material feels. There's a certain lo-fi atmosphere audible here but also the noisy guitar music is somewhat hidden in the backgrounds. The compositions are ruled by the soft and moody vocals that feel very, very close to the listener. This makes the album close to slowcore genre, especially that the pace is never rushed, as it's all about creating a poetic and moody atmosphere. Even when the guitars wake up and try to create some loud and noisy passages, the results are less of overwhelming blizzards but more of interesting flavours added to the overall slowcore/dream pop compositions.

With Hidden Noise - Nowhere (2022)

Charlie Berger is of course known as With Hidden Noise and Slowly - with both of the projects appeared on this blog already. The Canadian artist came back at the beginning of the year with another great album called Nowhere.

This "collection of songs contemplating love, loss, life and death" is filled with ultimately slowcore music. Its slow pace and mood-creating abilities definitely fit the self-reflecting theme of the album. Especially with Berger's dreamy, properly dispersed vocals flowing just above the soundscape like an autumn fog above the ground. The theme is no joke and the artist doesn't beat around the bush either; already the first song brings up the most important question in any human being's life: "Oh my god, in heaven/ What will happen to me when I’m gone?" and then it gets only more melancholic with the theme of loss (in friendship - Two Ships and in relationship - my favourite track here Back to Me) being perhaps even sadder than the theme of death - at least you don't have to live through the latter.

As always, this intimate slowcore atmosphere makes me think of Raised by Swans with similar level of melancholy and emotions enchanted in dreamy ballads. Ballads that have a huge potential to fill broken hearts with tons of melancholia.

Hooray for Humans - Tell Your Family and Friends that You Love Them (2021)

It's been already three years since I posted about Hooray for Humans' debut EP. Now, the Spanish collective is back with brand new dose of noisy energy. The October's Tell Your Family and Friends that You Love Them combines the twee pop innocence with some serious guitar noise.

This energy and general positive feeling that comes from their music shouldn't come as surprise judging by the project's name and the debut album's title. However, it's not something that is clearly expressed in music itself: the noisy tracks are mostly kept in slower pace with murmuring vocals on top of that. It sounds very much like RIDE or The Jesus and Mary Chain meet the gloomier R.E.M.'s pieces. Generally: very moody and very cozy. I love how the calmer mood coexists here with very clear and apparent noise of the guitars: for example, Tenth Floor seems to be particularly good at this exciting combination.

Especially that the further the album goes, the slower and moodier it gets. The album's title's thought may not be so positive and careless after all: there's a lot about difficult parts of life on this record, including saying goodbye to other people and the way the last year or two impacted all of us. But perhaps it's still the most important thing: to keep your friends close.

Postcards - After the Fire, Before the End (2021)

Last year, the Lebanese band Postcards' album The Good Soldier was one of my biggest discoveries and best dream pop works of 2021 in general. That said, they are together as a music group for almost a decade now. This year they are back with another airy album called After the Fire, Before the End.

Their music is built on the way Julia Sabra's extremely dreamy and accordingly dispersed vocals contrast with very rock-like guitar's crisp sound. Starting from the beautiful Mother Toungue, the album shows mostly compositions characterized by the slowcore pace and ballad-like, poignant atmosphere. The guitars are the only noisier elements and they really do sound inspired by some kind of grunge or americana rock, there's a certain dusty vibe of the Western audible here, perhaps not so much as in the new Holy Motors' music, but it's there. The only song that suddenly bursts out with faster pace and rock'n'roll-like energy is Bruises. But when you start to dance, it's already over and you are sinking in Flowers in Your Hair's ballad quicksand again. 

And this dreamy atmosphere covers a lot gloomier lyrics. The band's background certainly leaves a big mark on Sabra's lyrics that include tons of allusions to violence, war and the Beirut's explosion from the last year's summer (in the poignant Red) as well as to the fate of women in the Middle East. The whole album, both music- and lyrics-wise, culminates in If I Die, a song filled with the feeling of utter hopelessness that at the same time borders with the up-lifting conclusion; it's the "there's nothing left so we can start again" kind of feeling.

Allison Lorenzen - Tender (2021)

The Colorado-based artist Allison Lorenzen is better known as half of the School Dance duo, but this November she launched her solo career with an album called Tender. And just like the title suggests, she gave up her band's darkwave for a gentler and cosier pop tunes.

The album is filled with slowcore/art pop compositions that borrow something from the post-punk and synthwave genres, but the balance surely is tilted towards the warmth of dreamy pop. The compositions are usually strongly based on the moody and never-hurried piano keys and Lorenzen's soft but haunting vocals. This results in an extremely intimate and reflection-fuelling experience that is only deepened by what is going on in the backgrounds. This is the realm of the subtlest guitar noise (so touching in Afterthought!) and ethereal backing vocals, taking what's best from the noise pop and dream pop's catalogue. 

She's not alone in this either; the album features help by her fellow slowcore/ambient pop star Madeline Johnston a.k.a. Midwife (especially well-provided in the single track Vale) as well as Daniel Patrick Henry, better known as Memory Tapes. The music's intimate sadness is not a coincidence here. The whole album is very much focused on the problems of the heart, the emotional changes one has to go through, as Lorenzen is said to be "nursing old wounds from the end of a relationship and her musical project School Dance" and dealing with those in the form of music. And this is something that can be felt on the album particularly well.

Ruby Haunt - Watching the Grass Grow (2021)

I know that I post about the Californians next to every year. But it's not my fault they release so many new albums and the new ones are usually very, very good. It's no different with this year's Watching the Grass Grow, the duo's sixth in their discography.

They don't change their style much and it's good; if something's not broken, don't change it. There are, however, fragments that draw the audience's attention particularly strong - like the organ-like keys in Roman Candle or the beautiful piano works in Penny. Still, the clue of the band is its ethereal potential. As every time I write about them, I have to say about the massively dreamy vocals, the moody, slow pace of the ballads, the melancholia-infused lyrics. It's no surprise that the band's music sounds best in autumn, when the reality needs those kinds of warm and sad vibes. So this is less of a review and more of a reminder that autumn tastes better with a new Ruby Haunt release.

Horte - Maa antaa yön vaientaa (2021)

There's some dreamy/shoegaze projects from Finland I really enjoy and now, after the likes of Radio Supernova and Mumrunner, it's time for the quartet called Horte. The band released their third album Maa antaa yön vaientaa via Pelagic Records this summer and there's no reason not to try it if you are an ethereal music fan. 

The album's title, as far as I understand, translates roughly to "The earth lets the night shut (itself?) down", referring to the darker but also calmer take on the dreamy music they go with. There's not so much of traditional guitar noise here, the airy vibes come mostly from the atmospheric vocals singing in Finnish (it's always something that in my mind adds to the mystery and attractiveness of foreign music) while music is something that borders slowcore-like indie rock or trip-hop with the way it draws from electronica-influenced backgrounds and experimental add-ons. This concoction makes it feel not only very fresh but also extremely artsy, you can see that the musicians must know well what they do.

In this view, Kun joki haihtuu is a special track, the first that shows the louder, the noisier side of the project, the one that is soaked with the unnerving but also exciting atmosphere. Together with Väisty tieltä they create a satisfying and very shoegaze-like finish, which only proves there's little the band can't carry out.

Feral Atom - I Dream in Blue (2021)

I was watching Ola Beręsewicz's beginnings as Feral Atom since the first single Love. I, nomen est omen, loved it so much that every new track seemed to me slightly worse, it's a bit paradoxical. But now, as her EP debut I Dream in Blue is finally available, I can see that whatever she does is simply brilliant and together, the songs create a well-leveled and coherent whole.

You can hardly say this album is not focused on the atmosphere. The way she uses the slightly higher-pitched and airier backing vocals adds to the album's surreal ambiance while her beautiful and very dark voice sets the whole in the eery and fairy-tale-like place that inspires both awe and fright at the same time. The same is true about the ever-so-slow pace and some guitar solo accents all over the album. I'll still argue that Love is the highlight of the release. It is the most atmospheric and the darkest track here and I will not deny that when I heard it for the first time, I baptized the artist "the Polish Chelsea Wolfe". Now I can see that Beręsewicz goes in her own direction but some similarities are still there and it makes for the best compliment in my eyes. She sings about love mostly, but this darker, well-thought-through take on the topic makes it so much profound - also in Czas ("Time"), the only song with Polish lyrics here - one about love and nature and the feeling of longing for both of them.

Feral Atom debuted on stage during the recently held Soundrive Festival and everyone who was there saw that she showed no trace of a debut stress while her music sounded as mysterious and climactic on the festival's Secret Spot stage as it does on this EP.

Qualia - Wise and Otherwise/A Monster Grown/Will No Light (2021)

Dan Leader and his lo-fi, extremely atmospheric project Qualia are back. And this year, the artist managed to release already three fantastic albums: Wise and Otherwise, A Monster Grown and Will No Light, increasing the number of his releases on this blog up to five now. Let's cover them in this post as each of them is definitely worth visiting. 

The signature sound of Qualia is clear: the acoustic guitar (or single electric one)-based compositions with airy vocals and heavy atmosphere. The slow pace of the songs makes the whole thing always utterly melancholic while the artist's voice only deepens this feeling. I love it when he creates so dense and so captivating sea of noise, everything else sort of disappears inside, including the audience (like it is in Parasite for example). Wise and Otherwise is finished with its highlight, the lengthy Ruminations starts as one of the slowcore, melancholia-induced songs but finishes as a full-fleshed, solo-post-rock sadness madness. And it is a teaser of what was to come, as A Monster Grown is made of very much similar tracks.

Those long pieces are filled with quiet but very noisy post-rock. And as the post-rock parts were more or less ornaments of the first album's dreamy slowcore, here the slowcore functions as ornaments of guitar-heavy instrumental compositions. And finally, Will No Light sounds like the best quality of sound one while still having tons of the same, tear-jerking and intimate ambiance. Curse is probably my favourite track made by Qualia this year, however, who knows if Leader is not going to give us some more music, there's still several months left.

sonhos tomam conta - hypnagogia (2021)

Sonhos tomam conta is a project created by the Brazilian artist known only as Lua. This is some particularly grim and depressing shoegaze music, probably even blackgaze, though with only a few metal-derived elements throughout the album. But hypnagogia is still moody as hell, it's dreamy as hell and it's also very, very sad.

The project's name translates to "Dreams Take Over" but this is not put in the sweet and ethereal context here. The artist suffers from acute depression and suicidal thoughts are a constant in her life since she was a teenager, and the album reflects that, as she puts it, "this album is about me coming to the realization that I don't have many years left in my life" and "it's just a preparation for a bigger fall into the nothingness that makes me who I am". This all is terrifying enough but then there are also hallucinations she experiences and the album aims to recreate them. The artist's story itself makes me think of some of my favourite musicians like Paragraphs and Eric Howden who struggle and fuel their art works with this struggle.

Everything on the album is kept in dark and dreamy atmosphere. The pace is very slow and the compositions take their time but never really get louder, there's no conclusion and no crescendos. It's all about the sadness in the airy vocals and the channeling of depression that affects the audience from every minute of the release, from the ultimately ambient-pop-like ballads (meu corpo é uma prisão ("My Body Is a Prison")) to the most metal-like tracks (like this tweet isn't funny anymore or my favourite, epic magnum of lonely people in neon cities) The album is a proof for this miserably uplifting conclusion that even the worse that can happen in your life may result in something beautiful.

Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys - Transit Tapes (For Women Who Move Furniture Around) (2021)

Lucy Kruger, the half of the brilliant Medicine Boy duo she created with André Leo, started her solo career a while ago, but Transit Tapes (For Women Who Move Furniture Around)  is the first album she releases after the band ceased to exist. She performs her music together with The Lost Boys that consist of Liú Mottes, Andreas Miranda and Martin Perret, however there's no argue that Kruger is the project's leading force.

She comes from South Africa but lives now in Germany, and this album, as a follow-up to her 2019's Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls release, "documents Lucy's first year and a half after moving to Berlin". The foundation of her music is being minimalist and dark at the same time,  showing "the bare bones of the songs, a slow burning psychedelic folk that is both intimate and ambient". This puts more focus on lyrics and the artist's mesmerizing and delicate voice - it is music closer to singer/songwriter phenomenon than Medicine Boy's was, but it is filtered though the same, utterly sad and slowcore-paced vibes.

And just like on Leo's solo album earlier this year Kruger helped him with certain parts, Leo had a role to play on this album as well, and I still find it so very cute. It does make the longing after Medicine Boy less painful.
