Solenoide - Casa de Islandia (2023)

Inspired by the novel by the Romanian writer Mircea Cărtărescu, the Peruvian band Solenoide started their musical journey five years ago and this year was the highest time for them to release their debut EP. And they did so and called it Casa de Islandia.

Led by Laura Rosales and Oscar Contreras, the outfit embraced the very noisy, very ethereal genre of guitar music that is as close to shoegaze as it is to dream pop. The music feels psychedelic and chaotic, but it is very coherent with the overall hazy and dreamy vibe of the album. And so are the mixed, male and female, vocals that sing out very melodic and lively tunes. In fact, the tracks on the EP all are extremely catchy and in this aspect, they feel like (dream) pop music could be one of the inspirations. Even though sang in Spanish, the melodies stick to your head with ease. Especially when drowned in the uber-airy backing vocals.

According to their own words, the title's Iceland is a country that is close to their artistic hearts. And no wonder, the ethereal vibes of their music certainly would fit into the noisy scene of the country in the Far North.

Laikamorí - △​△​△ (2023)

The Peruvian artists who currently live in US, Laikamorí, made me fall in love with their unique and weird music with their fantastic debut Persōna five years ago. Now, they are back and △​△​△ proves that the debut was not a coincidence.

Based on electronic music that can be both lively and energetic as well as dark and gloomy, Laikamorí's compositions spark awe with how uniquely they sound. The industrial influences take over most of the tracks but they have to share with almost-dub-like electronica and noisy ambient parts. And this all is accompanied by one of the most interesting vocals out there: high-pitched and dreamy that express this partly gibberish partly poetic lyrics to make everything glow with the most attractive kind of musical mystery. 

And this is the first time I can post here, under a band picture I took personally. Apart from being extremely talented, the two artists proved to be super friendly when they spent some time in Kraków back in 2021.

What happens when atmospheric dream pop is being created by two artists with veeeery experimental taste? Laikamorí happens. The duet from Peru show what to do to make music both introduce the audience to a unique atmosphere and fascinate with eeriness. The project released their second album following "°°°°°°°" saying "we are here" to the world.

Their music is centered around the vocals that are diffused to the limits and that seek their place within broad, synth and guitar soundscapes. The nature of the former makes Laikamorí's music avoiding all the labels and floating away towards the place where vocal is just another instrument within airy post-dream-pop. And if the direction doesn't exist, they mark it out.

It's next to impossible to select one or two best tracks of "Persōna". Perhaps it would be the lazy and almost insanely airy "Anima" or the following, more lively track - "Psi Gamma" or the single called "Saudade". The next thing is the graphical representation of the cover arts but also the artists themselves that appeals to the space-unnatural taste that traps in the world created by Laikamorí even more.

Co się dzieje, gdy za nastrojowy dream pop bierze się dwójka artystów o bardzo eksperymentalnych ciągotach? Laikamorí się dzieje. Duet z Peru pokazuje co zrobić by muzyka wprowadzała w niepowtarzalną atmosferę i fascynowała dziwnością. Projekt wydał właśnie swoją drugą po debiutanckim "°°°°°°°" płytę i przedstawia się światu.

W centrum ich muzyki są rozproszone do granic możliwości wokale szukające przestrzeni wśród rozległych synthowo-gitarowych przestrzeni. To właśnie one sprawiają, że muzyka Laikamorí wymyka się z tradycyjnych klasyfikacji i zmierza w kierunku, gdzie wokal jest tylko kolejnym instrumentem w eterycznym post-dream popie. A jeśli takiego nie ma, to kierunek ten wytyczają.

Prawie niemożliwe jest wyróżnienie na "Persōnie" jednego utworu. Być może byłaby to leniwa, eteryczna do szaleństwa "Anima" lub następująca po niej, bardziej żwawa "Psi Gamma" lub singlowa "Saudade". A do tego graficzna prezencja zarówno coverartów jak i samych muzyków przemawia do kosmiczno-nienaturalnej estetyki, wciągając w wykreowany przez Laikamorí świat jeszcze bardziej.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) EN

Latin America should bring connotations with heat but my music discoveries indicate something else, it is a kingdom of cold wave. Today, another example of this is Sadness Isolation created by Daniel Rossier from Peru.

The characteristic trait of his is combination of coldness, darkness and high pace. Apart from the deep voice and whispers that appear out of nowhere, darkness is suggested by the depressive image and lyrics. The name of the project is quite clear - the isolation caused by sadness may lead to creation of great art and the gloomy Rossier is a perfect example of this claim.

The coldness is almost everywhere in this album. From the cold-blooded vocal to flat and clear bass line and the synth backgrounds making the whole thing very suggestive. While it's all true, the tracks are also surprisingly fast, very often almost disco-like if there's someone who likes such dark discos. The most important though is that, as it's the artist's goal, his music contemplates the 80s like a not very distant yesterday.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) PL

Ameryka Łacińska powinna kojarzyć się z gorącem, tymczasem moje muzyczne odkrycia mówią co innego, to królestwo zimnego wave'u. Kolejnym przedstawicielem jest dziś peruwiańskie Sadness Isolation tworzone przez Daniela Rossiera.

Jego znakiem rozpoznawczym jest połączenie zimna, mroku i tempa. Oprócz głębokiego głosu, pojawiających się czasem znienacka szeptów mroczne są przede wszystkim depresyjny imydż i teksty utworów. Nazwa projektu to dość jasny przekaz - izolacja spowodowana smutkiem potrafi prowadzić do wspaniałej sztuki, mroczny Rossier jest na to dobrym przykładem.

Zimne na tej płycie jest niemal wszystko. Od zimnokrwistego wokalu przez płaski ale wyraźny bas po nadające całości wyrazu warstwy syntezatorowego dźwięku. Tymczasem utwory są zaskakująco szybkie, często prawie dyskotekowe, jeśli ktoś lubi tak mroczne dyskoteki. Najważniejsze jednak, że tak jak chce artysta, jego muzyka kontempluje lata 80. jako nie tak odległe w czasie wczoraj.
