Martyna Basta - Winged in Collapse (2026)

When you are called a "sonic alchemist", you know there is something special in your music. Martyna Basta, Polish composer and singer/songwriter based in the city of Kraków (my neighbour I presume) released her third album (but first under the acclaimed 7k records) filled with ambitious electronica turned ambient pop music.

The signature sound of this album focuses on the artful electronic samples sewn together into a sonic canvas on which beautiful though enigmatic vocals are displayed. This is not an easy kind of neoclassical electronica, it requires attention and brain power to process everything that is happening around you. But it's satisfying if enjoyed properly. I love the vocals, even if they are used sparingly, they show the range of the artist's voice and add to the mysterious atmosphere of the release. 

I love that Basta invited some interesting guests, especially the harp-electronic duo LEYA (which, coincidentally, has also some Polish roots) in Laid and the British experimental rapper Rainy Miller in 2674. This is a beautiful, airy and ambitious electronic soundscape with elements of chamber pop appearing here and there that only make it more engaging to listen to.

Los Sara Fontan - Consuelo (2026)

The Spanish duo Sara and Edi (who does look like Taika Waititi in Our Flag Means Death) was part of last year's Pohoda festival's line-up and that's how I got to know them. Their experimental music with unbelievable energy and passion was my personal highlight of the whole event. So when they released an album last month, I knew it needed to be posted about in here.

Like most of their music in general, this album is a them taking a stance against the modern world that makes our lives harder with technocracy, fascination with the right-wing politics and climate change to name just a few terrifying things. The title's "consolation" is found in "small communities that challenge the techno-feudalist logic and propose new hopeful solutions". This album and this music is part of this. The instrumental music made with violin/keyboard sounds that heavily rely on the frantic drums goes from experimental to almost post-rock in matter of seconds and I love it.

The experimental parts are heavily influenced by electronica that is more nerve-shattering than dance-able. But these are mostly introductions to the instrumental passages that are created to make you feel like dancing. It really feels like the human here fights (and wins against) the machine. Even though there are no lyrics, this album works both as a work of music and as an anthem against everything that's wrong around us. Hand to Earth - Ŋurru Wäŋa (2025)

This is a special project, you can see it in the album title in Wáglilak language, you can see it in the multi-ethnic line-up and the music itself. The latter can be only described as world music meeting dark ambient and this thought alone would make me very excited to try these sounds.

There is a lot to read about the album (and I recommend doing so on the project's Bandcamp page), but the main things are that sense of belonging and the notion of home are the main themes here. This cannot be a surprise since the members of the projects come from very different places. However, whenever this happens, people very soon discover that it doesn't matter at all as their home can easily encompass entire planet.

There are Korean poems and singing in one of the native Australian tongues that represent the folk/world music part and the minimalist, dark but also quite surprisingly uplifting and soothing backgrounds that add up to the ambient part of the music. The effects are mesmerizing, especially that they are fueled by the use of various (and so different from each other) instrument as the music here is "written in the scribble of electronics, in the sighs of the clarinet and trumpet, in the broad brush strokes of the yidaki, and the snap of the bilma" (kudos to those of you who know what those are, I didn't).

Nac/Hut Report - Blue Afternoon (2025)

There is few Polish music projects that can be identified after the first second of their tracks. Nac/Hut Report is certainly one of them: the uniqueness of their ambient pop is genuinely impressive and it's not only uniqueness for its own sake. The duo creates music that feels a bit like a journey to some extraterrestrial lands and a bit like something extremely close to the heart.

Normally ambient pop makes me think of drone backgrounds and barely audible vocals put over them. Basically Midwife. But the Kraków-based project refreshes the concept, developing the backgrounds into full-fledged experimental sounds with some industrial flavour to them, thoroughly pressed down by the gramophone-like noise that makes the colourful mosaic of very different sounds feel like a coherent canvas that can be painted over with the vocals. And those also are a little bit different: they are quite well audible but definitely not easy to decipher either so that the mystery that embraces Nac/Hut Report's music deepens and deepens with every song and every album they produce.

I particularly like when those layers of sounds, not very loud on their own, are placed on each other, creating a sound that is not far from overwhelming while still being the slowcorest of slowcores. The duo definitely makes for one of the most least-known-but-deserving-much-more artists based in this country.

Snakeskin - We Live in Sand (2025)

It's been already some years since I posted about Julia Sabra, my favourite Lebanese artist who makes her name as a vocalist in Postcards but also as half of a music duo with Fadi Tabbal. The title of the album they debuted as a duo became the name of the project, but the music stays the same: more experimental than Postcards, but still fairytale-ishly ethereal.

The music here is different from your ordinary dream pop charmers' sounds. The glitchy, the uncomfortably noisy and a bit industrial meets the airy and wavy in the best way possible. It makes the skin crawl a little, but, before it gets too much to bear, it gets ironed over with some beautiful guitar sounds. Or flute. Or cute electronica. But at the same time, it's also very much minimalist: there doesn't have to be much to create the atmosphere and the duo proves it over and over again. The vocalizations in Olive Groves is joined by pipe organ-like sounds and not much more and that's just an example.

But everything here is glued together by Sabra's ethereal vocals. This is deceptive, however, as the beauty of the vocals is counterbalanced by the gravity of the lyrics, commenting on the situation in Lebanon loomed over by the never-ending Near East war. "It’s a stunning paradox — a song about birth, caught in the middle of destruction. Hope, fragile and flickering, seeps through the rubble. Snakeskin has always thrived in extremes, but here the contrast is sharpened to a knife’s edge". It's true, but it's also true that the third album from the duo is their darkest yet but seeing how the situation in the region develops, it may not be the darkest in general.

Saba Alizadeh - Temple of Hope (2025)

Saba Alizadeh creates music that is politically-involved and commenting on social matters. And as he is from Iran, you know that it is not going to be an easy-listening album. On his third album, Temple of Hope, the experimental musician talks about the issues in an extremely interesting and poignant way, even if he doesn't use many words.

"How can a sense of beauty be found amidst fear and cruelty", asks his Bandcamp account and I have to say, his post0industrial electronic soundscapes are far from the self-reflecting ambient pieces I usually listen to. Instead, they are filled with nerve-wrecking, thrilling sounds that come and go. There is the sense of danger and darkness as he "transforms the events during the >>Woman Life Freedom<< movement, as well as the struggles of the population in previous years, into poignant electro-acoustic music".

I said that he uses a few words and it's true: Alizadeh himself uses Kamancheh, a traditional, string instrument the sound of which is heavily transformed into the noisy, industrial output used to create the soundscapes. On some of the tracks, there are vocals though. They are provided by guest artists from Iran (Iran-born Sanam Maroufkhani) and from the Western World (Austrian Andreas Spechtl) and I have to say, the charm and beauty mentioned before can be found mostly in those places. The temples of hope.

Cruel Diagonals - Fractured Whole (2023)

Megan Mitchell makes music as Cruel Diagonals. Her new album is another example as of late of music created entirely with the artist's vocals (very recently I posted about Aphir's new album with similar theme), but Fractured Whole is as experimental as it's ethereal.

When you look at the titles of the tracks, you automatically think of Lingua Ignota and it's not my only connotation: there is something from Kristin Hayter in the vocals as well. But unlike her, Mitchell drowns the compositions in both extremely airy and very glitchy vibes. If you like sacral-like, ethereal vocals surrounding you from every direction but also being reshaped by experimental electronic music, this is definitely something for you. The compositions are rarely put within more formulated structures and often freely go wherever the artist wants them to.

Nac/Hut Report - Absent (2023)

With already their 7th album, the Kraków-based Nac/Hut Report continue to develop their very unique style that marries dream pop-atmosphere with experimental ambient electronica. Absent makes yet another extremely interesting album in the offstream landscape of Poland.

Brigitte Roussel is the singing part of the duo and her voice is utterly oneiric and atmospheric. It always sound like something that appears on the verge of a dream, difficult to decipher but enriching the mesmerizing ambiance of the compositions. Anyone who attended any of their shows knows how focused Roussel and Li/ese/Li are while working on their experimental ambient music. This music manages to be melodic and catchy while undoubtedly representing the very experimental part of the electronic music that directly borders with drone and noise genres. 

The artists sprinkle this outstanding mode of operation with a captivating idea on this particular album on which "All music has been extracted from shortwave radio interval signals from different international broadcasters" named in the track titles (from Korea and Uzbekistan to Poland and Slovakia). This alone makes it even more mysterious and difficult to pass on.

Królówczana Smuga - Sport Patriotyzm Militaria (2022)

Adam Piętak systematically builds on his stage persona of Królówczana Smuga, developing the art and music behind it. The proud citizen of the eastern Poland, Piętak creates his freak folk music basing it on rough, industrial sounds - nothing changed here. However, Sport Patriotyzm Militaria is still special in some ways.

The most important one being that the new songs are more... songs than noisy tracks. There's more lyrics, more catchy melodies. The songs are now ready to be performed by the audience during the live gigs, something that wasn't so obvious before. Especially that the artist skillfully plays with the industrial melodies the whole thing is built upon, adding quirky references to traditional music (as in HUHUHA with a Polish children song played in the middle despite the track's gloomy atmosphere). Additionally, Piętak is really good at modulating his sound so there's a multitude of vocals present, often encapsulated in a single song. The music is also more saturated with little decorations like additional samples. 

Besides the curious mashup of the folk and the modern, Piętak is really good at writing lyrics. They are structured like simple folk songs, perhaps sometimes even like nursery rhymes, but the content is much less carefree. The songs handle the current situation in Poland from the social perspective (Sport Patriotyzm Militaria ("Sport Patriotism Military Equipment")) or the approach to environment as presented by the Polish government (To nie jest las dla starych drzew ("No Forest for Old Trees")) for instance. All this is filled with pop culture references - sometimes more obscure, sometimes very straightforward as covering a Polish punk band Siekiera's song that closes the album.

Future Conditional - Isotech (2022)

It was such a sad moment when the acclaimed ghost rockers of Piano Magic said their final good byes in a classy way by releasing their last album Closure in 2017. But luckily, the Glen Johnson and Cédric Pin duo makes for a real continuation of the band's legacy and they proved it again after 2018's dark The Burning Skull album.

The project is called Future Conditional, the album is called Isotech and it's clearly very different but also very familiar to any fan of the British band. While the music is definitely shifted towards minimalist electronica/synth kind of vibe, the vocals and, most importantly, the lyrics feel very ghost rock-like. The elephant in the room is most certainly Demolitions, the track that is filled with Piano Magic's urban-oriented melancholia and which, very literally, refers to The Last Engineer from PM's masterpiece Part Monster. I appreciate the musicians' urge to self-development and experimenting and as such, the album can be seen as a continuation of Piano Magic's discography with a sudden shift in style.

This style is seen as a futuristic (I'd say retro futuristic even) idea presented by Johnosn himsself when he said: “I had this idea….well, more of a hope, that, in the future, there might be clubs where androids go to dance and humans are banned". This coldwave-like take on club electronica surely can buy me too. Apart from the familiar faces, there's also a couple of guests on the album with Amanda Butterworth aka Mücha and Trembling Blue Stars' Bobby Wratten and Beth Arzy as the most prominent ones. And their melancholic vocals  match the tone of the album perfectly.

Motte - Cold + Liquid (2022)

Anita Clark, a violinist and composer from the New Zealand's town of Ōhinehou (known also as Lyttelton), is an artist with impressive CV that includes playing together with various kiwi projects (like Lawrance Arabia, The Phoenix Foundation or Nadia Reid) and making music for movies and dance performances. She also releases her solo albums, the newest of which is called Cold + Liquid.

She "borrows from an array of sound sources to create an immense entity, with each piece situated precisely along the path" as her Bandcamp website states. This eclectic approach to music results in an experimenting, highly artsy pop that is way closer to neoclassical and instrumental ambient genres than to anything else. Especially since Clark makes a good use of her main instrument - violin. Its sound is rarely melancholic as it's often the case, in here its sound is taken as far as possible into the experiment while still remaining extremely appealing for the audience. And very much towards the theatrical music/performance, it's very clear that the artist knows what this environment is all about.

Her FB doesn't lie, she's a real violin witch.

Flower and Pines - Hnieŭ (2022)

Jegor Mickiewicz and Sasha Pushkin are based in Wrocław and create this extremely unique music that combines a lot from a lot of genres. And then some. It's no wonder that the artists' names are also the names of the most important writers in Poland (Adam Mickiewicz) and in Russia (Alexander Pushkin). Their new EP, Hnieŭ, is certainly one of the most interesting releases in Poland this year.

This is not an ordinary album, it's said to be "sonic performance" that is meant to be a "memorial service and an ode to courage". The fact that it is performed in Belarusian, the forbidden language in the modern Belarus, only provides a broader context and explains whose courage it is meant to praise. The noisy and experimental on many levels music has some of the east sacral vibe that is certainly only strengthen by the impressive and very original vocals. It is folk, it is dark, there's so many things going on in the backgrounds and each of them adds to the overall mysterious atmosphere.

Holy Hum - Let It Be Desire (2022)

Five years ago, Andrew Lee released his brilliant second album All of My Bodies and stole my music heart. Since then, he seems to have moved to New York but the music he offers hasn't changed much. There's no vocals this time, but the complex instrumental side speaks for itself on Let It Be Desire.

This album feels extremely intimate with all those imperfect sounds and noises all over the place, with many silent interruptions, with the clearly audible soul poured into the compositions. They are neoclassically beautiful but also a bit noisy, very experimental, clearly meant to ask questions rather than provide answers. It's poetry turned into music and as such, it goes so well with the poem the artist mentions on his Bandcamp account, a poem in which he that states that "I have lived most of my life in the spaces of becoming".

Gravity Failed - Tape Therapy (2022)

A Lincoln, UK-based artist who creates electronica-filled music passages that serve as backgrounds to spoken word lyrics - this is Gravity Failed. From what I can tell, the musician has just debuted with a mysterious EP called Tape Therapy.

The soundscapes we can witness on the album have many different faces: from the lively and filled with this synthy energy that makes everything more interesting in I Can't Be Better Than I Am to extremely airy and ethereal in the sacral-like No Numbers. But the project's main characteristic are the poetic and poignant lyrics in the form of spoken word, noir movies-like vocals that present a lot of story-building vibes, perhaps more prose than poetry in fact. I'm always keen on discovering new approaches to vocals and this is certainly an interesting one. I wonder for whom this is a therapy - is it something that helps the artist or is it supposed to lead the audience toward some kind of katharsis?

Pan Daijing - Tissues (2022)

When I posted about Pan Daijing's album Jade last year, I mentioned that it was her leap towards more intimate composition writing, a break from bombastic performances at art galleries she had gotten fluent in. And now, only several months later, we can get familiar with those massive works she needed to get away from, thanks to the album called Tissues.

The Chinese artist based in Berlin performed "an opera of five acts" at Tate Modern in London back in 2019, and now we can admire its grandeur and experimental flavour. The event made use of "conventions of opera and tragedy to present a searing representation of the embattled human psyche in space and time." As we all know already, Pan Daijing uses a lot of impressive vocals, but here the opera-like, very theatrical but also not very informative lyrics-wise are utterly dominant. Or maybe not so meaningless? The libretto is said to be written in a mix of traditional and modern Chinese so perhaps there's more in the voices then I think. But for sure, there's tons of emotions communicated in extremely direct way, inviting the audience to feel all sorts of feeling from the whole spectrum - from melancholic calm to invigorating grandeur and this is thanks to the cast of twelve dancers and opera singers who perform it together with Pan Daijing.

But this is as far from a traditionally defined opera as possible. The artist based her work on industrial noise that, although gives space to the vocal quite often, really is there to create the soundscape. It's not a coincidence that the artist was my Ambient/Neoclassical act of last year as her music skills are as impressive as they are diverse.

Resina - Speechless (2021)

Karolina Rec is a part of the offstream music scene in Poland for some time now, to the point that she appears also in more mainstream surroundings. The school-educated cellist is well-known for her experiments with neoclassical music and those are very well visible on her new album called Speechless.

In her career, Rec collaborated with and supported so many top-shelf artists, both Polish and international, that it is pointless to list them here. She has left her mark on the experimental music scene here already and she seems ready to make it even more visible. Speechless has very little left from the artist's neoclassical background with a lot of attention put on the industrial and noisy atmosphere with some exceptionally ethereal elements, most notably the heavy use of choir singing. This makes the album both dark and unnerving as well as airy and beautiful. Those worlds collide in Resina's music very often, for example when the war-like drums take over the soothing choir singing in Failed Myth Simulation or when in Manic the cello sounds coexist with very brutal noise.

Although, as the album's title suggests, the release is solely instrumental, its main theme is to "explore ideas about language, the voice and the unpredictability of nature" (like in Darwin's finches, the birds that are a perfect example of said unpredictability). This album that shows music from very different parts of the calm/noisy spectrum, seems to be a good commentary on the nature and language's complicated, not to say experimental, ways.

Catherine Graindorge - Eldorado (2021)

The Belgian violinist and composer Catherine Graindorge, known for her collaboration with Hugo Race on the 2017's Long Distance Operators, creates music that can be called an experimental take on neoclassicism. Her new album, produced by John Parish himself, Eldorado brings a unique experience for those who need something ambitious and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

In her music, Graindorge makes use of strings, harmonium and electronica to create mesmerizing and one-of-a-kind compositions. There are parts in which her music sounds like your favourite neoclassical beauty but there's even more parts with less obvious, more experimental sound - like the noisy Eldorado for instance. There's also her voice present in some tracks and, especially the spoken word parts, it adds up to the mysterious ambiance of the whole release. The said ambiance gets darker and quieter the further you go through the album, the finishing tracks sound like the most beautiful instrumental drone with the atmosphere of melancholy and general sadness.

Suuns - The Witness (2021)

Back in 2010, the Canadian outfit released one of my favourite albums ever, their debut Zeroes QC. I got a glimpse of it when I was late to their gig at OFF Festival in Katowice. But what I heard convinced me to fall in love with the album. And while they have never come close to this perfect level, they maintain their independent, unique style which they recently included on the new release called The Witness.

Everything in their music sounds like nothing else. It's true for the bass-based tunes with synth noisy deconstructed avant-garde music around, it's true for Ben Shemie's neurotic, subtle way of singing/speaking as well. I love how it works together and how, while being very much experimental, they are able to make their music appealing and enjoyable. As in the single tracks Witness Protection and C-Thru, the melodies are subtle and demand the listener's full attention, but it only makes them more satisfying and emphasizing the weird but accordingly ambitious lyrics. I love how some tracks feel almost ridiculously minimalist with the vocals, very subtle beats and not much more (like Clarity) but they make captivating ballads anyway while other ones are based on the mesmerizing electronica/guitars combo that feels close to Zeroes QC (as the great The Fix). I respect that the band have their own unique style and that they are not afraid to use it; it makes their music so easily recognizable and, honestly, pure, experimental fun.

Giorgio Fazer - Gdy rozum śpi (2021)

"The third and the best album" by the Warsaw-based duo Mateusz Franczak-Miron Grzegorkiewicz known as Giorgio Fazer, is called Gdy rozum śpi. This is not my assessment, it's what the artists stated on their own. After some impressive experimental music-infused poetry on Gorzki to chleb jest polskość and 2020's Odarci z godności, the duo is back with yet another mark on Polish music.

The artists are known for their poetic expression; they include recited poems all over their music and one could argue that the improvised guitar and electronica sounds around them are only a background, an experimental arrangement to extend the poetry's meaning. This time the poetry is represented by what is called "a mysterious voice on the tape in a found dictaphone", a voice of a man who is clearly delusional and follows some kind of borderline mad conspiracy theories. The voice samples open and close the album. The artists comment that "in the stories we found, we discovered the spirit of our times - the progressive, overwhelming madness" so their goal is to tame it by closing it in the form of music.

It is unnerving, especially that the album's title Gdy rozum śpi translates to the first part of Franciso Goya's masterpiece's title The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters. One can only wonder what will eventually happen, in the reality around us as well as in the music while going through the album. The improvised sounds create a calm but psychedelically complex soundscape that is only made more attractive when the dreamy vocals appear and even more poignant when it gets swallowed by industrial noise in Czas decyzji.

Maarja Nuut - Hinged (2021)

The Estonian experimental musician Maarja Nuut, who I posted about when she released folky album World Inverted in 2020, clearly found the pandemic times very inspiring: after another album last year, she's back with a new one called Hinged.

The release revolves around the notion of generations and how many things, including physical belongings, are passed over time from the older to the younger ones. On her Bandcamp page, the artist describes her stay in her grandmother's farm that resulted in such a theme for thoughts and later for the album. The material came from sessions Nuut spent on "wiring modulars, experimenting with [her] voice, and strumming old vermona organ" and the results are very experimental, form-free, opened for anything. While the music experimentation leaves me confused more times than not, I really enjoy how the artist try new things with her voice, which results in mesmerizing and airy passages like in A Feast for instance.

And again, she's not alone. This time, Nuut joins forces with Nicolas Stocker, a Swiss jazzy artist who is very keen on free improvisation music - and although he is responsible only for drums in some of the songs here, you could say that it might have influenced the overall very experimental ambiance of the album.
