All India Radio - Moviestar EP (2019) EN

Established around Martin Kennedy band All India Radio is around already for over 20 years and released around 40 (!) albums. It's an astonishing result and it's worth congratulating the musicians by listening to the short EP Moviestar from July.

In the colourful description of their works, Kennedy states that inspirations are drawn from Lynch, Pink Floyd, Radiohead or Boards of Canada. Some of them are visible already on the cover art aesthetics, some also in the music. Kennedy and co. play sample infused post-rock with easy-to-sppot psychedelic and even jazz. There are some heavier guitar riffs but they appear very seldom (Immortality, Pt. 2), still however, the tracks' compositions and movie samples suggest deeper post-rock connections.

It's worth noting that the first two tracks are going to appear on the long play releasing in October and called Eternal.

Założona wokół Martina Kennedy'ego formacja All India Radio już od 20-tu lat i wydała około czterdziestu (!) albumów. To niezwykły wyczyn, a pogratulować można muzykom słuchając znakomitej chociaż krótkiej EP-ki Moviestar z lipca tego roku. 

W barwnym podsumowaniu swojej twórczości Kennedy pisze o inspiracjach czerpanych od Lyncha, Pink Floyd, Radiohead czy Boards of Canada. Część z nich widać już w samej estetyce cover artu, część wyraźnie w muzyce. Kennedy i spółka gra nasycony samplami post-rock z łatwo wyczuwalnymi elementami psychodelii, a nawet jazzu. Mocniejsze riffy pojawiają się rzadko (Immortality, Pt. 2), ale kompozycje kawałków i sample wyjęte z filmów mocno sugerują post-rockowe inspiracje muzyków.

Warto dodać, ze dwa pierwsze kawałki pojawią się też na zapowiedzianej na październik płycie Eternal.

All I Heard Was Static - Wine Bottles And Bayonets (2019) EN

All I Heard Was Static is a lesser known duo from Wales led by Tom Wallace. Lesser known but on their new album, Wine Bottles And Bayonets, the artists showed that they are good in making an interesting, synth-based post-rock.

The leitmotif of the album is not-so-optimistic sentence "people are not good to each other", it appears in Heinrich, but seems to be present throughout the whole album. The lyrics appear in the songs thanks to the omnipresent samples taken from various sources and it makes the Welsh sound like my favourite Public Service Broadcasting (especially in Safe Places with samples taken from an oldschool educational broadcast (?)), but their music is rather based on the sounds of synthesizers and other electronic tricks. The last ones are very notable in my favourite track called Rockland and its fascinating finish.

All I Heard Was Static - Wine Bottles And Bayonets (2019) PL

All I Heard Was Static to mało znany duet z Walii prowadzony przez Toma Wallace'a. Mało znany, ale na swojej ostatniej płycie, Wine Bottles And Bayonets, artyści pokazali, że potrafią robić bardzo ciekawy, oparty na syntezatorze post-rock.

Mottem przewodnim zespołu jest mało optymistyczne zdanie "ludzie nie są dobrzy dla siebie nawzajem", pojawia się ono w kawałku Heinrich, ale wydaje się być obecne przez cała płytę. Słowa pojawiają się dzięki wszechobecnym samplom, przez co muzyka Walijczyków przypomina mi moje ulubione Public Service Broadcasting (zwłaszcza w Safe Places z samplami z oldschoolowego programu edukacyjnego (?)), z tym ze jeszcze bardziej oparta jest na brzmieniu syntezatorów i innych elektronicznych sztuczkach. To ostatnie najlepiej brzmi w moim ulubionym Rockland i jego fascynującym finale.

Echoes of the Soul - In an Ocean of Shipwrecks (2018) EN

Classically neoclassical music from France, Echoes of the Soul is a one man project and it's not without this amateur vibe, but also is greatly engaging. Whoever the author is, has already released quite a lot of material and the newest addition is an album called In an Ocean of Shipwrecks.

The album is filled with piano music "with influences from Post-Rock, Progressive, Minimalist music". Those influences are also tangible in the omnipresent samples from movie dialogues and the choice of the sources is not super obvious as the artist reached to Dark Knight in The Soldiers of an Endlesss Eclipse or von Trier's Melancholia amongst others (also to Chaplin's Dictator which is one obvious choice for a change)

All the same, the samples lead the audience through the album that "is about all the violence and the sadness that we all, humans, cause and experience amongst the other beings, on Earth". So it's a kind of music rather to think to than relax (especially when Chaplin shouts out his famous monologue). And it's appreciated.

Echoes of the Soul - In an Ocean of Shipwrecks (2018) PL

Klasycznie neoklasyczna muzyka z Francji, Echoes of the Soul to projekt jednoosobowy i niepozbawiony amatorskiego ducha, ale wciąż wspaniale wciągający. Ktokolwiek jest twórcą, wydał już dużo materiału, a ostatnim pełnowymiarowym albumem jest In an Ocean of Shipwrecks.

Płyta wypełniona jest muzyką fortepianu "z wpływami post-rocka, muzyki progresywnej i minimalistycznej". Te objawiają się również wszechobecnymi samplami z produkcji filmowych i nie są to oczywiste wybory, bo artysta sięga między innymi po Mrocznego Rycerza w The Soldiers of an Endlesss Eclipse czy Melancholię von Triera (a także, co jest już bardzo oczywistym wyborem, Dyktatora Chaplina).

Tak czy inaczej to te sample prowadzą słuchaczy przez płytę, która "opowiada o przemocy i smutku, które my ludzie tworzymy i rozpowszechniamy wśród innych stworzeń na Ziemi". Jest więc bardziej do przemyśleń niż do relaksu (zwłaszcza gdy Chaplin wykrzykuje swój sławny monolog). I bardzo wartościowa.

Carolines - Hullámokkal (2018) EN

Carolines are from Hungary and they give us a small peak into the Hungarian heavy music scene. Their new album (with a beautiful cover art) is called Hullámokkal,  meaning "with the wave" and shows some good, loud and guitar music spiced with expressive vocals.

Aggressive, but in this aggression also extremely energetic sound of the band is balanced with samples appearing from time to time, adding some post-rock/cinematic vibe to the whole thing. But still, the Hungarian's music's core is the screaming, hardcore vocal that sometimes sounds like desperate cries, sometimes like metal scream and sometimes like clean singing. But it wouldn't achieve anything alone without the very solid instrumental layer, more post-rock than punk/hardcore in the way how it is written and how complex it is. 

Not to be too monotonous, the band can also create straight post-rock tracks (M4) and more... trip-hop ones (Ember). Also, the exotic vibe in the music is provided by the Hungarian language that is not only mysterious but also very fittingly expressive.

Hullámokkal can be yours for whatever you want to pay.

Carolines - Hullámokkal (2018) PL

Carolines są z Węgier i dają nam mały wgląd w węgierską scenę muzyki ciężkiej. Ich nowa płyta (z pięknym cover artem) nazywa się Hullámokkal,  co znaczy tyle co "z falą" i pokazuje dobre, głośne, gitarowe granie okraszone ekspresyjnym wokalem.

Agresywne, ale w tej agresji również niezwykle energetyczne brzmienie zespołu równoważą pojawiające się od czasu do czasu sample, nadające całości bardziej post-rockowo/kinowego charakteru. Niemniej, rdzeniem muzyki Węgrów jest wrzaskliwy, hardcore'owy wokal raz brzmiący jak desperackie okrzyki, raz jak metalowy scream, a czasem nawet jak czysty śpiew. Niczego by jednak sam nie osiągnął gdyby nie solidna warstwa instrumentalna, bardziej post-rockowa w sposobie, w jaki jest napisana i złożona, niż punkowo-hardcore'owa.

Żeby nie było jednak jednostajnie, Węgrzy potrafią robić zarówno stricte post-rockowe kawałki (M4) jak i... trip-hopowe (Ember). Za egzotykę w muzyce Carolines robi język węgierski, brzmiący nie tylko zagadkowo, ale i właściwie dla tak ekspresyjnej muzyki.

Hullámokkal można mieć za ile się chce.
