Luke Buneo, a solo artist from Phoenix, Arizona released his first ever EP and I have to say: I've heard worse debuts. The airy vocals (and backing vocals!) with quite rough-sounding guitars in the backgrounds create a wonderful atmosphere from the borders of one's dreams.

Those rocky music is what I hear the most on the album. The guitar backgrounds sometimes sound like slightly tamed MBV's madness (Dawgs) and sometimes like "just" a grunge/rock/indie riffs that are catchy and filled with raw energy. This makes an interesting comparison with the very dreamy vocals and slower compositions that make me think of Ruby Haunt (Working the Jaguar). In general, this short album is very well thought through and well-rounded, especially for a solo musician's debut release. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the artist cause there's never enough of interesting solo shoegaze projects.

HOLY FAWN - Dimensional Bleed (2022)

It's safe to say that the Arizona's Holy Fawn is one of the hottest names in the blackgaze/modern post-metal genre since their absolutely mind-blowing debut release Death Spells. It's been four years and they are finally back (although not in Europe as their tour got canceled which is my biggest music regrets of this year) with another fantastic album called Dimensional Bleed.

It seems that they decided not to change much since their debut. The music of the band oscillates around heavy but very modern-feeling sounds and delicate, Nothing-like vocals. Honestly, in some places, the album sounds like Domenic Palermo's journey into the new metal or even trap-like land of wonder. It sounds familiar but also extremely fresh, with changes of pace, metal music ornaments in the background (so well-done in Death Is a Relief) and electronic special effects. It's not very illuminating to say that this contrast between the metal and the dream pop in their music is what compels me so much here. And although many artists do so (and the whole blackgaze genre is all about it), Holy Fawn reinvented this approach, making the dreamy vocals extremely dreamy and being able to make them still very clear in the metal mayhem.

It's especially true when the delicate turns into total chaos, as it is the case in Sightless' loud and mad finish. No wonder that they are advertised as a "physically tethered to this reality, yet creatively unmoored from any earthly restraints" band who is free to do whatever they please. But it's always within this unreal, intimidating but also very satisfying atmosphere.

Lumastora - When We Are (2022)

I can safely say that Jed Flora and his Lumastora moniker is one of my favourite ambient projects. The lush and deep layers of sound bring comfort and awe and it's also the case of Flora's new album called When We Are.

His music can be uplifting but it can also as easily get very chilling, as it is the case in The Faded Husks with its slow and ominous drone soundscape. Whatever the nature of feelings it generates within the audience, it's impossible to be untouched by this album. The layers of soft electronica come together and slowly consumes you and drown in a slow but steady stream of emotion, even if it's only a half an hour-long one.

Citrus Clouds - Collider (2021)

Citrus Clouds, an Arizona-based three-pieces shoegaze band, showed their second album this March. Following the debuting Imagination from 2016, Collider makes another instance of "music to daydream to" as they describe their own music.

And quite fittingly too. Citrus Clouds' sound is heavier and more rough on the edges than dream pop while also more melodic and less hazy than shoegaze. This nice little niche is well developed into the band's unique sound. Both Stacie Huttleston and Erick Pineda's vocals have the right amount of ethereal dreaminess to them so that it doesn't affect the overall melodies which are pretty significant here. Also the guitar's work seems to me more towards (indie) rock than traditional shoegaze (those riffs in A Pastel Sky!).

The band admits to take inspirations from various artists including Pixies and Stargazer Lilies, but also from colors. Each song was inspired by a different color and it seems to be audible in the way the songs are similar but at the same each has something different in it (like In a Daydream has some of the deep West country-esque vibes while Let Love Find You brings on a vast sea of ethereal backing vocals). And finally, my favourite tracks, Collider and Summer Everywhere, being lined with heavier sounds that so well compliment the dreamy aura of the album.

Holy Fawn - The Black Moon (2020) EN

The Arizona-based band impressed me and the half of the alternative music world with their 2018 album Death Spells. To such a degree that whatever they touch, they have their place reserved on my blog and on my playlists. And so does the new EP called The Black Moon.

And the material here is quite different from the album. Their music is still a kind of blending of post-rock, metal and shoegaze, but there's more focus on the atmosphere and less on the psychedelic melodies. The subtle, airy vocals by Ryan Osterman are even more airy and atmospheric while the metal-originating parts even more captivating. At least in Candy. Thethered is mostly an interlude while Blood Pact is even more interesting as it's flirting with electronic sounds and extremely post-metal in its finish. A short album but so impressive.

Zespół z Arizony olśnił mnie i połowę alternatywnego świata wydanym w 2018 roku albumem Death Spells. Do tego stopnia, że teraz czegokolwiek się nie dotkną, mają u mnie miejsce na playliście i na blogu. Tak też jest z nową EP-ką The Black Moon.

A jest to materiał dość różny od poprzedniej płyty. Ich muzyka to wciąż mieszanina post-rocka, metalu i shoegaze'u, tutaj jednak wyjątkowo dużo jest atmosfery, a mniejszy ciężar położono na psychodeliczne melodie. Delikatny, eteryczny wokal Ryana Ostermana jest jeszcze bardziej eteryczny i atmosferyczny, a metalowe wtręty jeszcze bardziej zajmujące. Przynajmniej w Candy. Thethered to raczej wypełniacz, a Blood Pact jest jeszcze ciekawszy bo flirtujący z elektroniką, a w finale bardzo post-metalowy. Krótka płyta, a tyle wrażeń.

Lumastora - Inlet (2019) EN

Jed Flora, better known as Lumastora, visited the blog already two years ago with his album Bend. Today he's back with a not so long but really good EP Inlet.

Flora on the album shows, as he states, "a new pathway I have found in creating music". It shows in epic and grandeur-filled ambient with the feeling of peace, stillness but also momentousness of space walks. Or at least it's the first track, Boarding On Autopilot. The rest of the album is filled with contemplating, atmospheric ambient soundscapes with some beautiful moments such as the out of tune piano sounds in Bark the Bones for example.

Jed Flora, lepiej znany jako Lumastora, pokazał się już na blogu dwa lata temu albumem Bend. Dzisiaj powraca na niego niedługą, ale jakże udana EP-ką Inlet.

Flora pokazuje na nim, jak pisze, "moją nowoodkrytą ścieżkę tworzenia muzyki". Objawia ona się epickim i pełnym rozmachu ambientem przypominającym spokój, bezruch ale też doniosłość spacerów kosmicznych. A przynajmniej taki jest pierwszy kawałek Boarding On Autopilot. Dalsza część płyty jest natomiast wypełniona kontemplacyjnym, atmosferycznym soundscape'em z takimi ładnymi fragmentami jak dźwięki rozstrojonego pianina Bark the Bones na przykład.

Holy Fawn - Death Spells (2018) EN

The second album from Holy Fawn not only is another shoegaze gem coming from United States, it's also everything shoegaze should be - the perfect combination of noise and melody. "Death Spells" is a serious candidate for the best album of the genre in 2018.

"Indie, Acid, Mellow, Heavy, Animals, Nature, Dreams, Taste of Moss, Bury Yourself Alive" this is the band's motto and this organic spirit can be found in every moment of this fantastic album. The Arizona-based musicians combine in their music the density of the best shoegaze, expressiveness and always-changing-nature of metal and long-distanced compositions together with the falsetto of the vocalist that come straight from Tame Impala's works ("Dark Stone"!).  A huge thing is how the guitars function here, besides working as the traditional, relatively peaceful background for the airy vocals, they are able to explode frantically as deafening noise that changes the pace so well.

Another characteristic would be Ryan Osterman's vocal, when necessary, it is very airy but doesn't hesitate to go to really crazy places: both high-pitched singing from psychedelia and angry screaming that would well fit metal and hardcore works. The album begins with a series of earthquakes in "Dark Stone" and "Arrows" after which it slowly gets quieter, especially in the ballad "Seer"and interludium "Two Waves". The second part of the album is devoted to more oneiric sounds, but still with a dose of craziness, especially in the finishing track "Sleep Tongue".

Holy Fawn - Death Spells (2018) PL

Drugi album Holy Fawn nie jest tylko kolejną shoegaze'ową perełką ze Stanów, jest wszystkim, czym shoegaze powinien być - idealną kombinacją hałasu i melodii. "Death Spells" to poważny kandydat do tytułu najlepszego wydawnictwa 2018 w tym gatunku. 

"Indie, Acid, Mellow, Heavy, Zwierzęta, Natura, Sny, Smak mchu, Zakop się żywcem" tak brzmi maksyma zespołu i da się tę organiczną duszę odszukać w każdej chwili znakomitego krążka. Arizończycy łączą w swojej muzyce duchotę najlepszego shoegaze'u, ekspresyjność i zmienność metalu oraz budowanie długich kompozycję i falset wokalisty rodem z Tame Impala ("Dark Stone"!). Wielką rolę odgrywa sposób, w jaki w projekcie funkcjonują gitary - oprócz tradycyjnego, spokojnego podkładu pod eteryczny wokal, potrafią one wybuchnąć znienacka pod postacią ogłuszającego hałasu, tak doskonale różnicującego tempo.

Kolejną sprawą jest właśnie wokal Ryana Ostermana, gdy trzeba eteryczny, ale niewahający się zapędzić w szalone rejony - zarówno wysokie rodem z psychodeli, jak i wściekłe, których nie powstydziliby się hardcore'owcy. Płyta zaczyna się od serii trzęsień ziemi w "Dark Stone" i "Arrows", po czym systematycznie się uspokaja, zwłaszcza w balladowym "Seer" i interludium "Two Waves". Druga część krążka poświęcona jest bardziej onirycznym dźwiękom, w których jednak wciąż niemało jest szaleństwa, zwłaszcza w zamykającym album "Sleep Tongue".

Scale & Feather - Sonora (2018) EN

Scale & Feather, one-person project from Arizona, on its first release gives us a lift to the hot atmosphere of the New Territories. And it's done with loud and crushing post-rock.

Sonora is a state in the North Mexico, south from California, so the cover art and the whole south US vibe is really justified. The track titles don't leave any doubts either, the project is heavily rooted in this geographical area (the most interesting one is the last track's title which is also a date of the famous shoot-out in Tombstone). Also musically speaking, the artist knows what he's doing as he plays guitar post-rock in this massive, coarse and somehow slowly developing way of the sunny Arizona's heavy rock.

It gets even more interesting when the artist starts heading towards shoegaze in "The Way Of The Palo Verde" adding to the music some vocals lost somewhere under the instruments and sounding quiet and helplessly, like shouting in a dessert.

"Sonora" costs whatever you want to pay.

Scale & Feather - Sonora (2018) PL

Scale & Feather, jednoosobowy projekt z Arizony na swoim nowym wydawnictwie funduje nam wycieczkę w gorące klimaty Nowych Terytoriów. A robi to za pomocą głośnego i przygniatającego post-rocka.

Sonora to stan na północy Meksyku graniczący między innymi z Kalifornią, tak więc cover art i cały vibe południa Stanów jest jak najbardziej usprawiedliwiony. Tytuły poszczególnych utworów też nie pozostawiają wątpliwości, że projekt jest silnie ukorzeniony w tym właśnie miejscu (uwagę zwraca zwłaszcza ostatni utwór, którego tytułem jest data słynnej strzelaniny w Tombstone). Również muzycznie artysta wczuwa się w swoją rolę grając gitarowy post-rock w masywny, szorstki i jakby powolnie rozkręcający się sposób, przypominając skąpany w słońcu Arizony amerykański heavy rock.

Interesująco robi się, gdy artysta zbacza nieco w stronę shoegaze'u w "The Way Of The Palo Verde" dodając do muzycznego zestawu zagubiony bardzo głęboko pod instrumentami wokal brzmiący cicho i bezradnie jak wołanie na pustyni.

"Sonora" kosztuje tyle, ile zechcesz zapłacić.

Lumastora - Bend (2017) EN

Lumastora, or Jed Flora of Phoenix, is the most beautiful thing you can dissolve into at an autumn evening. Drone ambient bordering with extremely melancholic post-rock sounds just like a mirror reflection of a tormented soul.

Flora describes his music as a depiction of ht play between light and shadow, the sun drowned in nostalgia. To achieve this, he uses a great variety of effects drowned in all-embracing drone. This creates uncanny atmosphere combining peace with distress, as light with darkness.

"Bend" shows this picture in a quite bombastic way (as e.g. in the epic "Star Two") or quite opposite, being delicate and subtle ("Bend"). Both ways make a strong impression. Flora adds that he "lives the life and creates soundtrack along the way". Sad and atmospheric, that's how it's supposed to be.

Lumastora, czyli Jed Flora z Phoenix, to najpiękniejsza rzecz, w której można się rozpłynąć jesiennym wieczorem. Drone'owy ambient zakrawający w wielu momentach o doskonale melancholijny post-rock brzmi niczym lustrzane odbicie udręczonej duszy.

Flora opisuje swoją muzykę jako zobrazowanie gry światła i cienia, słońce zatopione w nostalgii. Do wykreowania tego muzycznego obrazu używa przeróżnych środków tonących we wszechogarniającym drone'ie. Tworzy tym samym niepowtarzalną atmosferę łączącą spokój z niepokojem, tak jak światło z ciemnością.

"Bend" pokazuje ten obraz w sposób mocno podniosły (jak na przykład w epickim "Star Two") albo wręcz przeciwnie, delikatny i subtelny ("Bend"). W każdym przypadku robi potężne wrażenie. Flora dodaje, że "przeżywa życie, a po drodze dorabia do niego soundtrack". Smutny i klimatyczny, taki powinien on chyba właśnie być.

koleżanka - vessel (2017) EN

A project from US with extremely intriguing name (koleżanka means a female friend in Polish), created by Kristina Moore is a really experimental pop music, very much mature and, although calm and atmospheric, is also impressive with its complexity. 

The album, which is probably not very surprising, is full of songs about love, longing and friendship. But there is always some of this unsettling layer hidden in lyrics. Sung with koleżanka's moody, a bit suffering-like, voice, they get additional depth. The album offers also sounds of violin by Josh Hill and trumpet by Greg Lloyd which only shows how complex the music is.

Sensible and beautiful. The kind of friends we like.

koleżanka - vessel (2017) PL

Projekt ze Stanów o intrygującej nazwie, stworzony przez Kristinę Moore to eksperymentalny pop, bardzo dojrzały i, mimo że spokojny i nastrojowy, to imponujący złożonością.

Płyta, co pewnie nie dziwi, pełna jest piosenek o miłości, tęsknocie czy przyjaźni, mają jednak wyraźny, niepokojący sznyt ukryty w tekstach. Wyśpiewywany nastrojowym, trochę cierpiącym głosem artystki nabierają znaczenia. Na płycie oprócz samej Moore słychać również skrzypce Josha Hilla i trąbkę Grega Lloyda, co pokazuje jak złożona jest to muzyka.

Wrażliwa i piękna. Takie koleżanki lubimy.
