Paragraphs - The Children Are Orphans Now (2017) EN

Ryan Potts, a.k.a. Paragraphs comes back with new material. I have to say he creates a lot because since January and wonderful "I Went Outside, I Could Hear The Houses Breathing, They Were Alive" he managed to be half of the Acerb project (together with Joey Van Der Kaaij) and release the album called "False". Potts is one tormented soul that drives his creative powers from describing his dealing with depression and simultaneously manages to serve this gloomy content as wonderfully attractive music.

"The Children Are Orphans Now" is a continuation of the previous album. The artist writes that it sounds as the last one should have - heavier, gloomier and focused on "thrashing desperation of various mental illnesses". And it is. It starts with an anthem "Love as you are" with a repetitive, mesmerizing mantra. "The Most Perfect Thing" is created by combining utterly depressing lyrics with acoustic guitar and noise based dreampop that transforms smoothly into loud and fast "OHMYGODIMGOINGTODIE". Next tracks shows skillfully used recording excerpts ("Let's Write Songs..."), pace changes ("Winter Destroy Me") and looped wailings ("One Of Us...").

"I think there's too much happy music out there. Somebody should do something about that" says the artist. "The Children..." are beyond any doubt one step towards it.

Trzeba przyznać, że jest płodny, bo od znakomitej styczniowej "I Went Outside, I Could Hear The Houses Breathing, They Were Alive" zdążył stworzyć połowę projektu Acerb (z Joeyem Van Der Kaaij) i wydać wraz z nim płytę "False". Potts dał się poznać jako prawdziwie umęczona dusza, która czerpie wenę z opisywania swoich przeżyć z depresją, a przy okazji potrafi tę mroczną zawartość ubrać w niezwykle atrakcyjną muzykę.

"The Children Are Orphans Now" to kontynuacja poprzedniego albumu. Muzyk pisze, że jest taka jaka powinnaś być poprzednia - cięższa, mroczniejsza i skupiona na niszczącej desperacji wynikającej z chorób psychicznych. Jest. Zaczyna się hymnem "Love as you are" z powtarzaną wkoło hipnotyczną mantrą. "The Most Perfect Thing" to skrajnie depresyjny tekst zaprezentowany jako dreampop zagrany na gitarę akustyczną i noise, który przepięknie przechodzi w głośny i szybki "OHMYGODIMGOINGTODIE". Następne kawałki to umiejętne wykorzystanie obcego materiału ("Let's Write Songs..."), zmian tempa ("Winter Destroy Me") czy zapętlonego zawodzenia ("One Of Us...").

"Uważam, że na świecie za dużo jest wesołej muzyki. Ktoś powinien coś z tym zrobić" pisze muzyk. "The Children..." są z pewnością cegiełką w słusznej sprawie.

Józef, Zofia - Chłodna pasywna głowa (2017) EN

Ciche Nagrania recordings (Quiet... Recordings in Polish) from Poznań have just released an album by Józef and Zofia (it's probably Józef Buchnajzer, the leader of the publishing house). Their motto says "quieter, slower, less" and this music couldn't get a more fitting description.

"Chłodna pasywna głowa" ("A Cool, Passive Head") is a compilation of thoughts poured into an uncanny world of sounds that forces people to contemplate it and look into themselves. Into their own passive heads. This ambient music is minimal in the best way possible. With occasional instance of drone and field recording. To use when you need a quiet recording

Józef, Zofia - Chłodna pasywna głowa (2017) PL

Poznańskie Ciche Nagrania wydały właśnie płytkę Józefa i Zofii (zapewne chodzi o Józefa Buchnajzera, dowodzącego wydawnictwem). Hasłem przewodnim jest tutaj "ciszej, wolniej, mniej" i nie dałoby się trafniej określić tej muzyki.

"Chłodna pasywna głowa" to zbiór myśli wpuszczonych w przedziwny dźwiękowy świat nastrajający słuchaczy do kontemplacji i spojrzenia wgłąb siebie. Wgłąb swych pasywnych głów. Ambient jest minimalistyczny w najlepszym tego słowa znaczeniu, z okazjonalnym drone'em czy field recording. Gdy potrzebujesz cichego nagrania.

Ankt - Ankt (2017) EN

Dark and depressing and very loud music symbolized by Egiptian pyramids? Ankt, not to be confused with Ankh, show their first album from distant land of Brazil. And they are sooo good.

No point in beating around the bush, the vocals are as angry and threatening as they should but sometimes also calm and melancholic. And sometimes both at once. Guitars are loud and ear crushing as they are supposed to be, although there are calmer, more sad than tragic moments too. And this all is already to be found in the first longer track - "Leaves". And the album is long and engaging. No wonder, the band had been preparing it for four years!.

I was touched by "Au Revoir" that radiates almost tangible melancholy, longing for something far away in space and time . Also sacral/gothic elements of "Subversion" draw the attention of a listener.

Ankt - Ankt (2017) PL

Mroczna, dołująca i bardzo głośna muzyka spod znaku egipskich piramid? Ankt - nie mylić z Ankh, pokazuje się na swojej pierwszej płycie w dalekiej Brazylii. I trzeba przyznać, że nie bierze jeńców.

Co tu kryć - wokale są zgodnie z oczekiwaniami wściekłe i naprawdę groźne, albo spokojne i melancholijne. A czasem i takie i takie naraz. Gitary są zgodnie z oczekiwaniami głośne i miażdżące uszy słuchaczy, chociaż zdarzają się również spokojniejsze, bardziej smutne niż tragiczne momenty. A wszystko to już w pierwszy dłuższym utworze, w "Leaves". Tymczasem album jest długi i wciągający. Nic dziwnego, zespół szykował go cztery lata.

Poruszył mnie "Au Revoir", z którego bije niemal namacalna melancholia, tęsknota za czymś odległym w czasie i przestrzeni. Również sakralno-gotyckie elementy w "Subversion" bez wątpienia przykuwają uwagę.

te' - Kai (2017) EN

Te' is not a band that should appear on a blog that describes not well known, usually beginning artists. It is a brand you know what to expect from. One of the most recognizable Japanese alternative artists. But the new juicy post-rock that came from under their fingers cannot be ignored. Ladies and gentlemen, the new EP by te'.

"Kai" is everything you could count on. Loud and aggressive guitars grinding the audience and impress with their epicness (as in the first track) but also provide us with very melodic music ("Playing repentance...", track nr 4). When needed, it can be quite moody (track nr 3 - "Creation is synonymous...") but it should be stated that the band focus on the power their music radiates. And those beautiful song titles reminding me of the ones by Red Sparrowes. Such a pity this EP ends so fast.
