Espejo Convexo - Ruina Circular (2017) EN

This nation has this something in them because after Stockhaussen there is another project on our blog, that offers a combination of shoegaze, darkness and cold - Espejo Convexo.  The band from the Mexican capital city's goal is to create music they call a "darkgaze pop" - as catchy as jarring. If you add the feeling of an incoming danger and darkness, no wonder the combination is interesting.

The band is really good at the not easy task of combining genres. Thick bass strings set the course and lead the dark atmosphere of guitars and electronic sounds and really intriguing vocals: shoegazing by Azul Carazo (her name means "blue" in Spanish, the colour of sadness) as in "Color del Cielo" and a colder one by Daniel Arp (e.g. in "El Miedo").

Czemu nie. The whole thing sounds like a calmer and sadder version of the Horrors. The name of the band means a convex mirror - a mirror that exaggerates feelings, disfigures reality, scares with deformation? Why not.

Ta nacja chyba coś w sobie ma bo po Stockhaussen na blogu pojawia się właśnie kolejny meksykański mariaż shoegaze'u z mrokiem i zimnem - Espejo Convexo.  Zespół ze stolicy kraju za wyzwanie wyznaczył sobie stworzenie muzyki mogącej uchodzić za "darkgaze pop" - tak chwytliwej jak i drażniącej. Jeśli dodać do tego uczucie zagrożenia i nadciągającego mroku, trzeba przyznać, że mieszanka jest intrygująca.

Zespół fenomenalnie radzi sobie z zadaniem niełatwego połączenia gatunków. Grube struny basu wytaczają szlak, a podąża nim mroczna atmosfera gitarowo-elektroniczna i niezwykle intrygujący shoegaze'owy wokal Azul Carazo (jej imię oznacza kolor niebieski, który jak wiemy w kulturze angielskiej oznacza smutek) - np w "Color del Cielo" lub chłodniejszy głos Daniela Arpa (w "El Miedo").

Całość przywodzi mi na myśl łagodniejszą i smutniejszą wersję the Horrors. Nazwa zespołu oznacza tyle co wypukłe zwierciadło - lustro uwypuklające uczucia, przeinaczające rzeczywistość, straszące deformacjami? Czemu nie.

The Trees Strip - Trip To Tibet (2017) EN

"Trip To Tibet" makes a quite deceiving title. According to it, there should be a fair dose of traditional Asian-Tibetan sounds on the album but in reality, it's no mystic, New Age folk. The Trees Strip recorded a really tough but well-balanced post-rock album.

As the post-rock music handbook says, the Indonesians succeed in combining delicate, filled with sadness fragments with those sounding like a guitar storm. The intro inspires awe with the aforementioned folk instruments, "Tibet; 1959" with stron drums creating a fast pace of the track, "Guts Will Take Your Hope" with beautiful keys. 

The band promises both, furious emotions with their view on post-rock music and some of the beauty of the Tibetan nature, culture and the country's dark history. You should really experience it on the trip to Tibet together with The Trees Strip.

The Trees Strip - Trip To Tibet (2017) PL

"Trip To Tibet" to nieco zdradziecka nazwa. Zgodnie z tytułem, od czasu do czasu pojawiają się tradycyjno azjatyckie, tybetańskie brzmienia ale to żaden mistyczny, new age'owy folk. The Trees Strip nagrali bardzo mocną, odpowiednią wyważoną post-rockową płytę.

Tak jak w podręczniku, post-rock Indonezyjczyków umiejętnie łączy fragmenty łagodne i pełne smutku z prawdziwą nawałnicą gitar. W intrze zaskakują wspomniane tradycyjne instrumenty. W "Tibet; 1959" bardo mocna perkusja wygrywająca szybkie tętno utworu czy delikatne klawisze w "Guts Will Take Your Hope". 

Zespół obiecuje z jednej strony gwałtowne emocje w swojej interpretacji post-rocka, z drugiej tchnienie piękna tybetańskiej przyrody, kultury ale też mrocznej historii tego kraju. Należy to przeżyć wybierając się na wycieczkę do Tybetu z The Trees Strip.

Endless Melancholy - Radiant (2017) EN

Endless Melancholy, or in other words Ukrainian artist Oleksyi Sakevych, has been mentioned on this blog so many times already, recently due to his collaboration with musicformessier, that needs no introduction anymore. What is needed though is to put his recent album on and listen deeply to this extraordinary music.

"Radiant" combines neoclassical music with incapacitating electronics. Sakevych has those unique skills to extract the heart-breaking, melancholic sound out of this concoction. It's best, as I hear it, in "We Were Born From The Shooting Star" (by the way, a title seemingly very poetical but also very probable scientifically), a track that gradually develops into the almost danceable "Satellites" and finally the cloudy and peaceful "Yet Another Reason To Be Still" that end the album.

Endless Melancholy - Radiant (2017) PL

Endless Melancholy, czyli ukraiński artysta Oleksyi Sakevych, gościł na łamach tego bloga już tak wiele razy, ostatnio przy współpracy z musicformessier, że nie trzeba już go przedstawiać. Trzeba za to odpalić jego najnowszą płytę i wsłuchać się w tę niezwykłą muzykę.

Na "Radiant" łączy się neoklasyka z obezwładniającą elektroniką. Sakevych jak nikt inny potrafi wydobyć z niej przejmujące, melancholijne brzmienie. Najlepiej, moim skromnym zdaniem, brzmi ono w "We Were Born From The Shooting Star" (swoją drogą, niby tytuł poetycki, a wielce prawdopodobne, że i naukowo prawdziwy), utwór, który przechodzi w niemal roztańczony "Satellites" czy zachmurzony i spokojny, kończący płytę "Yet Another Reason To Be Still".

"Radiant" jest do wzięcia za płać ile chcesz.

Monochromatic Visions - Monochromatic Visions (2017) EN

Monochromatic Visions is one of those projects that, according to my ears, is really good at combining the shoegaze density with a plain message of coldwave. Already the project's name seems to suggest it with its visions experienced in black and white.

The Greeks use in their music the clear bass of coldwave and monumental guitar background from shoegaze and there is also the vocal that itself combines both genres. The album sounds like a perfect garage gig that forces you to have fun but also to lose yourself in thought a little bit.

The opening "Deep" is a simple message with a rhythmical background and a spectacular finish. "Secret Gardens (DIV)" on the other hand is a bit dreamy ballad ended with a solid rhythm of "Synesthimy" and dissolving in air, melancholic "Untitled For Now".
