Sidewave - Ultraviolet (2019) EN

They say that they play space rock and that they put some new spirit into this veteran genre. The Americans of Sidewave make their music for six years already and have just released their fourth album. Ultraviolet is worth looking a little closer.

The musicians manoeuvre between the extremes of shoegaze - their heavy guitars are particularly heavy and almost stoner-like aggressive and rough while the soft vocals are super soft and delicate. And they approach the whole thing with serious grandeur, just listen to the great In Sadness and try not to shiver when the bass-like drums start to sound in the background. It's also worth saying that Sidewave's tracks are engaging as well very airy hits, and yes, they deserve this title.

It doesn't even matter that right in the middle of the album, at the end of 100k, there's a couple of minutes of misplaced noise, the Americans soon come back to what they do best. And they do that in Vehement and in Can't Be Bad with great style.

Piszą, że grają space rock i że w ten zasłużony gatunek wtłaczają nowego ducha. Amerykanie z Sidewave tworzą już od sześciu lat i wydali właśnie czwartą dłuższą płytę. Warto się Ultravioletowi przyjrzeć.

Muzycy manewrują pomiędzy ekstremami shoegaze'u - ich gitary są nadzwyczaj ciężkie i prawie stonerowo agresywne, a z kolei wokale niezwykle miękkie i delikatne. Do wszystkiego w zasadzie podchodzą z niebywałym rozmachem, wystarczy przesłuchać znakomite In Sadness i niemal podskoczyć, gdy w tłach zaczynają grzmieć kotły. Na pewno też warto powiedzieć, że kawałki Sidewave są po prostu wciągającymi ale też bardzo eterycznymi przebojami, bo na takie miano większość zasługuje.

Nie przeszkadza w tym kilkuminutowy noise w końcówce 100k, Amerykanie szybko wracają do tego, co robią najlepiej. I w Vehement i w Can't Be Bad robią to w wielkim stylu.

Nieeve - Nuestros inviernos encuentran el viento elevándonos (2019) PL

Nieeve pochodzą z argentyńskiej Villa Pehuenia i warto sobie wyguglować to piękne miejsce położone w Andach na granicy z Chile. Góry sugerowałyby, że nazwa zespołu ma jakiś związek ze śniegiem (hiszp. "nieve"), ale muzycy na debiutanckiej płycie sugerują że to skrót.

Nazwa płyty przekłada się na "nasze zimy napotykają wznoszący nas wiatr" i czyż nie jest to nadzwyczaj poetycka fraza? Akurat pasuje do uduchowionej muzyki Argentyńczyków. To połączenie przejmującego post-rocka i delikatnych shoegaze'owych naleciałości zdobyło moje serce od razu, wraz z rozpoczęciem się singlowego Joa. W tym kawałku wielką rolę odgrywają eteryczne chórki przenikające zdecydowane i atmosferyczne gitarowe granie. Podobnie jest w kolejnym utworze Ruido blanco - takie połączenie jest jednocześnie głośne i chwytliwe jak i w pewien sposób sakralne, zarówno jeśli chodzi o monumentalność kawałków gitarowych jak i anielskość chórów.

W Brisa mamy w końcu pełnoprawny dreampopowy wokal w najlepszym, eterycznym wydaniu i w końcu przytłaczająco gitarowe Renacer. Ta krótka płyta ma w sobie bardzo dużo by zadowolić najbardziej wymagających fanów podniosło melancholijnej muzyki.

Nieeve - Nuestros inviernos encuentran el viento elevándonos (2019) EN

Nieeve come from the Argentinian town of Villa Pehuenia and it's a place worth googling, located in the Andes on the border with Chile. The Mountains seem to suggest that the band's name refers to snow (Spanish "nieve"), but the musicians' debut album suggests that in fact it's an abbreviation.

The album's title can be roughly translated into "our winters meet an elevating wind" and isn't it a super poetic phrase? Perfectly fitting the Argentinian's spiritual music. This combination of touching post-rock with delicate shoegaze influences won my heart from the very first track, the single one Joa. In this song, the huge role is played by airy backing vocals haunting the poignant and atmospheric guitar music. Similarly in the next Ruido blanco - this mixture is both loud and catchy and in a way sacral with its monumentality and the angel-like choirs.

In Brisa we finally get the orthodox dream pop vocal in the best and airest version, in the final track Renacer - crushing guitar sounds. This short album has everything to please the fans of exalted and melancholic music.

Ivatu - Enormous and Mild (2019) EN

Created by the three artists: multi-instrumentalist Anton, poet Eava and producer Pavel, the Moscow-based trio Ivatu makes music from the border of trip-hop and sung poetry using mostly old-school ways (according to the wabi-sabi aesthetics). This is how the EP called Enormous and Wild was created.

Especially this poetic side of the project sounds the most spectacular. Eava sings her lyrics with her fantastically mesmerizing voice balancing between unsettling whispers and expressive confession (as in the brilliant Haunt). Another plus is that their trip-hop music is significantly different from other similar projects - dark and nervous pulsating in the background, sad sounds of strings and other instruments adding to the overall atmosphere of the songs.

The already mentioned approach to avoid using typical modern ways of delivering electronic music fits here perfectly. When recording, Ivatu used "vintage drummachines, samplers, synths and guitars" making the atmosphere unique and at the same time dark and tribal/folk (Heat & Hatchet, ladies and gentlemen).

Ivatu - Enormous and Mild (2019) PL

Założone przez trójkę artystów: multi-instrumentalistę Antona, poetkę Eavę i producenta Pavla moskiewskie trio Ivatu tworzy muzykę z pogranicza trip-hopu i poezji śpiewanej, a przy tym stara się używać do tego oldschoolowych metod (estetyki wabi-sabi). Tak powstała EP-ka Enormous and Wild.

Właśnie poetycka warstwa projektu brzmi najbardziej spektakularnie. Eava swoje teksty śpiewa fantastycznie hipnotyzującym głosem balansującym między niepokojącym szeptem a ekspresyjnym wyznaniem (chociażby we wspaniałym Haunt). Do tego trip-hopowa muzyka jest całkiem inna niż w większości projektów tego gatunku - mroczne i nerwowe pulsowanie w tle, smutne dźwięki strun i innego instrumentarium dodającego mnóstwa punktów do klimatyczności kawałków. 

Znakomicie znajduje się w tym wspomniane podejście do nieużywania współczesnych atrybutów wykonawców muzyki elektronicznej. Ivatu użyli w nagraniu "vintage'owe automaty perkusyjne, samplery, synthy i gitary" co daje niepowtarzalny, jednocześnie mroczny i tribalowo-folkowy klimat (Heat & Hatchet proszę państwa).

slush - slush EP (2019) EN

"Not your average EP" makes the whole description of this album by the one man shoegaze project from Tennessee. And indeed, you can safely say that slush has this thing that makes it stand out.

Airy atmosphere made even stronger by the lo-fi aesthetics and the beautiful cover art is the main characteristics of the EP. It's clear that it's a solo project so there's not much of the massive sounds and it's more about almost bedroom-pop-like themes (as in The Less You Do the More You Win). Especially worth listening to is the last but one track called Seriously and it's seriously a top class ethereal shoegaze, and this is what I'm counting on coming from the project on next albums.
