Shallow Seas - Shallow Seas (2018) EN

A Hungarian band that is one big mystery in the Web. They seem to be debuting, but on the other hand, the really good sound of their music and details such as a very well-thought-through logo, may suggest something else. Anyway, it's worth to get to know the world of Shallow Seas on the new album.

Instrumental post-rock from the Hungarians surprises with its uniqueness. It's not a boring mess of calm sounds nor a breath-taking and monumental guitar orgy. It's precisely in the middle of the two extremes with its brilliant compositions, catchy melodies and interesting ways of creating music. Those are, among others, airy backing vocals in Elèphant,  wonderful use of keys in Shallow Seas, or riffs in One Door. The Hungarian band is definitely worth our attention.

Węgierski zespół, który jest jedną wielką tajemnicą w sieci. Wygląda na to, ze są to debiutanci, ale z drugiej strony znakomity poziom płyty i takie detale jak przemyślane logo mówią coś innego. Tak czy inaczej, warto poznać świat Shallow Seas na zatytułowanym tak samo krążku.

Instrumentalny post-rock Węgrów zadziwia oryginalnością. Nie jest ani nudnawą plątaniną dźwięków, ani zapierającą dech monumentalizmem gitarową orgią. Jest dokładnie pośrodku z przemyślanymi kompozycjami, wciągającymi melodiami i ciekawymi rozwiązaniami. Takimi są eteryczne chórki w Elèphant,  znakomite użycie klawiszy w tytułowym Shallow Seas, czy riffy w One Door. Warto patrzeć z uwagą na Węgrów.

Just Like Honey - The Weight of the Stars (2018) EN

The inspirations behind the band's music must be clear for every fan. Just Like Honey is not only a classic song by The Jesus And Mary Chain, but also a perfect metaphor of the whole shoegaze music: thick and sweet like honey poured into ears. The New York-based band undoubtedly take from the best ones, but they also add a lot of their own indie pop catchiness, just like on their new album called The Weight of the Stars.

It is filled with bitter-sweet songs about love, but also about growing up and other similar existential problems. Thanks to the indie pop vibe and the absolutely nice vocal by Bianca Yang, the songs go immediately to the head and cannot be not-sung along. Strangest Boy, Giant, Golden Glow, the tracks that have the hit-potential are almost countless.

Anyway, the best one would probably be Feels The Same, not only talking about an issue that is important to the young adults, but also seduces with the original chorus. It makes true of the band's words that they are "noisy, sweet and utterly avant-garde, throbbing with sublime energy."

Inspiracje stojące za muzyką zespołu są chyba jasne, dla każdego fana. Just Like Honey to nie tylko kultowy utwór The Jesus And Mary Chain, ale też idealna metafora całej shoegaze'owej muzyki: gęstej i słodkiej jak miód podawany uszami. Nowojorski zespół bez wątpienia czerpie od najlepszych, a do tego dokłada mnóstwo własnej indie-popowej przebojowości jak na nowym albumie The Weight of the Stars.

Płyta wypełniona jest słodko-gorzkimi piosenkami o miłości, ale również o dorastaniu i temu podobnych problemach. Dzięki indie popowemu vibe'owi i nadzwyczaj przyjemnemu wokalowi Bianki Yang utwory te natychmiast wpadają do głowy i nie da się ich nie podśpiewywać, Strangest Boy, Giant, Golden Glow, kawałki o dużym potencjale hitowości wymieniać można w zasadzie bez końca.

Najlepiej wypada natomiast chyba Feels The Same, nie dość, że w przebojowy sposób opowiada o ważnym problemie dla młodych-dorosłych, to jeszcze uwodzi oryginalnym refrenem. Dzięki niemu sprawdzają się słowa zespołu o tym, że są "hałaśliwi, słodcy i całkowicie awangardowi, pulsujący wysublimowaną energią."

Zwidy - Szum (2018) EN

Zwidy is a Warsaw-based trio who play non-compromising impression on post-punk and concerned rock music. Recorded for the Trzy Szóstki label, band's debut album is a fresh approach to the theme combining some tangible inspirations from the Polish music scene. Check it out when listening to Szumu ("Buzz").

On one hand, Zwidy's poetry echoes this nihilistic approach known from Nagrobki's works (especially in Ostatnie Pięć Lat ("The Last Five Years") and W Wolnym Czasie Marnuję Potencjał ("In My Free Time, I Waste My Potential"), but without their ironic, ridiculing tone. On the other, the way they describe the reality around us without beating around the bush is much alike the hip-hop projects do. Seducing combination, especially that Na Szczęście ("About Happiness") could we match more poetic repertoire of he artists like Nosowska.

Apart from that, what equally important, the band does great also musically speaking. Their compositions are both melodic, engaging and showing a lot of good guitar sounds. The neurotic vocal and a bit raw backing vocals only add up to the lo-fi charm. It's well heard in the noise-driven first part of Zwycięzca (Przegrany) ("Winner (Loser)"). A very promising album.

Zwidy - Szum (2018) PL

Zwidy to trio z Warszawy grające bezkompromisową impresję na post-punkowy i zaangażowany rock. Nagrany dla Trzech Szóstek debiutancki album to bardzo świeże podejście do tematu łączące w sobie jednocześnie kilka wyczuwalnych inspiracji z polskiego podwórka. Przekonajcie się słuchając Szumu.

Z jednej strony poetyka Zwidów przypomina nieco nihilistyczne podejście Nagrobków (Ostatnie Pięć Lat, W Wolnym Czasie Marnuję Potencjał), ale bez ich ironicznego, prześmiewczego tonu. Z drugiej, opisują rzeczywistość bez upiększeń i walą prosto w szczenę, czym przypominają blokowiskową kulturę hip-hopu. Wciągająca kombinacja. A przecież takie Na Szczęście równie dobrze mogłoby znaleźć się w repertuarze Nosowskiej

Poza tym, co równie ważne, zespół jak najbardziej broni się muzycznie. Ich kompozycje są i melodyjne i wciągające i pokazują kawał dobrej gitary. Neurotyczny wokal i szorstkie chórki tylko dodają całości lo-fi'owego uroku. Świetnie ujawnia się to w skąpanej w noisie pierwszej części Zwycięzcy (Przegranego). Bardzo obiecujący album.

Thomas James White - her (2018) EN

Thomas James White is a musician of Cardiff, whose tenderness can be admired on his last album called her. Filled with neoclassical music brings awe with the sounds of piano and spacious backgrounds, from the very beginning it's plain how intimate the music is and how much of himself, White put inside.

The sad tones in Time Capsule and the beautiful ones in I Have No Heaven Left go together, just like in real life, And there are also more electronic fragments in Time Capsule and, finally, her, a track that could well be an independent, almost post-rocking album.
