Wakings - The Abyss (2019) EN

Wakings is a solo project by Ian Barczewski (very Polish-sounding surname), musician from St. Louis, Missouri. The music on his new album The Abyss makes a legit, juicy piece of guitar post-rock with heavy message.

"This album is dedicated to those who have lost someone and have had to explore the loss in the deepest recesses of depression and anxiety in order to find acceptance". Heavy message and the music is also heavy. Wakings is a project from the series of "solo works that sound as if it was several guys with beards on stage". From the very beginning the album attacks with aggressive guitar sounds. The hit is exceptionally heavy in Silenced Grounds where the ambient intro is followed by surprising and violent guitars. It's also tangible in Field Studies and it seems that those rapid changes of pace together with deafening guitars are the American's music's strength.

Projekt Wakings to solowy twór Iana Barczewskiego (swojskie bardzo nazwisko), muzyka z St. Louis w Missouri. Muzyka na jego nowym albumie The Abyss to z kolei pełnoprawny, soczysty kawałek gitarowego post-rocka z ciężkim przesłaniem.

"Ten album dedykowany jest wszystkim tym, którzy kogoś stracili i musieli stawić czoła utracie w najgłębszych otchłaniach depresji i stanów lękowych aby odnaleźć akceptację". Mocna wiadomość, a bo i muzyka jest mocna. Wakings to projekt z serii "niby solowy, a brzmi jak kilka brodatych gości na scenie". Od samego początku album atakuje agresywnymi gitarami. Uderzenie to odczuwa się wyjątkowo dotkliwie w Silenced Grounds, w którym po chwili ambientowej przygrywki słuchacza zaskakują gwałtowne i nieprzewidywalne gitary. Podobnie jest zresztą w Field Studies i wydaje się, ze właśnie te nagłe zmiany tempa połączone z ogłuszającymi gitarami są siłą muzyki Amerykanina.

Get Lost, Wire Avenue - United in Nothingness (2019) EN

Get Lost, Wire Avenue is another one recently post-rock-esque projects from Slovakia on the blog. The Bratislava-based band showed not that long time ago a short but impressive EP called United in Nothingness.

The album speaks about the void that is here shown in quite a positive way, as a place potentially for something new. That's where the title's unity in nothingness comes from, perhaps this was the way the music project came to be as well. The first track called Spiral Staircase / The Siren's Song makes a peaceful post-rock dominated by monotonous and mesmerizing sequence sounding like an improvisation on air horn. The second one is a piece of very dark ambient that in Screams of Hope  transforms into very guitar and raw-riffs-driven post-rock.

Get Lost, Wire Avenue to kolejny ostatnio około-post-rockowy zespół ze Słowacji na naszym blogu. Tym razem kapela z Bratysławy, która pokazała niedawno krótką, ale efektowną EP-kę United in Nothingness.

Płyta opowiada o pustce, która pokazana jest jednak w pozytywnym ujęciu, jako miejsce z potencjałem na coś nowego. Stąd to tytułowe zjednoczenie w nicości, które być może dało i początek temu muzycznemu projektowi. Pierwszy kawałek Spiral Staircase / The Siren's Song to spokojny post-rock zdominowany przez jednostajną i hipnotyzującą sekwencję przypominającą improwizację na alarm przeciwlotniczy. Drugi to tymczasem kawał naprawdę mrocznego ambientu, który w Screams of Hope zamienia się w bardzo gitarowy i napędzany surowymi riffami post-rock.

Amalunga - Incipience (2019) EN

Album Incipience by a post-rock project Amalunga is already some months old, but it fits the weather outside so well that it had to appear on the blog. The artist who calls himself just Alex, is really good at conveying the autumn melancholy in his music.

But it's not the only thing the music is about, as he states, his post-rock is "waiting to fill your mind with sadness and happiness at the same time". The music is so unique because its majority is played on acoustic guitar accompanied by delicate ambient effects (as the minimalist synths and touching bass-line in This Shadow Speaks).  Similarly impressive is Through the Darkness which evolves from barely audible minimal neoclassicism to very, as for this album, grandeur-filled violins-based post-rock. Intriguing work.

Amalunga - Incipience (2019) PL

Album Incipience post-rockowego projektu Amalunga ma już kilka miesięcy, niemniej znakomicie pasuje do obecnej aury, tak dobrze, że znalazł się teraz na blogu. Artysta podpisujący się po prostu jako Alex, idealnie oddaje w swojej muzyce jesienną melancholię.

Jednak nie tylko, jak sam pisze, jego post-rock "czeka by wypełnić twój umysł jednocześnie smutkiem jak i wesołością". Wyjątkowość jego muzyki polega na tym, że jej gros zagrane jest na gitarze akustycznej, której towarzyszą delikatne, ambientowe efekty (takie jak minimalistyczny syntezator czy wzruszający bas w This Shadow Speaks). Podobnie efektowny jest Through the Darkness, który ewoluuje od cichutkiego, minimalistycznego neoklasycyzmu po wyjątkowo, jak na tę płytę, podniosły post-rock oparty na skrzypcach. Bardzo ciekawa pozycja.

A Cerulean State - Story of Winter (2019) EN

The Swedish project by the name of A Cerulean State has already been making a great impression on the blog with the album I Thought You Would Give Me a Place. Today is no different as the musician comes back with the new release called Story of Winter.

As it could be guessed, the album is filled with tons of atmosphere generated by piano and violins. If those really are winter stories, it's rather an optimistic view on the season. There are slow tracks (actually all of them are), but there's nothing of the gloominess of the Scandinavian winter, more like the joy of its magical climates.
