Our Ceasing Voice - The Origin of Everything (2026)

In 2011 I discovered the Austrian band of Our Ceasing Voice and their When the Headline Hit Home quickly put them alongside iLiKETRAiNS at the top shelves of my music taste, labeled as effing dark heavy music to feel things to. Now, after almost a decade since the previous release, the Innsbruck-based band is coming back with the 4th album and I was very curious how much of this fascination remained in me. And it turns out that it's quite a lot.

Yes, of course The Origin of Everything is closer to 2017's Free Like Tonight: it's less of the depressing, slow pace and the crushing weight of music and more about melodies and vocals (BTW, Reinhard Obermeir's voice is what stroke me first, I didn't remember quite how overwhelmingly intensive it is). Still, it doesn't mean there's none of the attractive darkness in their compositions. Not at all. The guitars feel so massive, even when they feature in songs that are melodic bangers like Diamond Eyes. What I like the most, though, are the moments of chaotic madness at the end of some of the compositions, especially in Chival.

The band is aware of this double nature in their music. Indeed, they are rather proud of it. "Our Ceasing Voice have always existed in the in-between. Between post-rock and post-metal, between vast soundscapes and heavy crescendos" and yeah, I'd say between the melodic guitars and crushing guitar avalanches. There was a time I didn't like this change of direction, with the new album I rather enjoy it.

The Origin of Everything costs 8 EUR.
