Local Blood - A Lure Of Sights (2016) EN

Post-punk temper, coldwave backgrounds and the bass line put in the foreground with poignant post-rock moments. Local Blood is a Lithuanian quartet based in Vilnius, that listened to The Horrors a lot and decided to record something between "Strange House" and "Skying.

Everything begins with the story of a night when a forest grew - a composition of cold synthesizer and hot guitars. After which it's only getting better as Šarūnas Vyštartas' vocal adds to the mixture (I wouldn't be very surprised if his name was Badwanas - if I exaggerate with the comparisons it's only because I have only respect for The Horrors). The whole thing sounds both disturbing and so catchy, no wonder, the lyrics deal with hardly pleasant experiences. "I kneel alone / My thoughts and me / Beneath the mask / That others see" ("Crawling Borders") or "I dig in my past / I lose the present / A commotion is a new friend of mine" ("Past Perfect Continous").

The strongest impression is left by last track whose repeated lyrics make it a sort of anthem for... For what exactly? Is it about a toxic relationship in which one side feels good being controlled? Or perhaps there's something more? After some more listening, which I'm planning anyway, I may find it out.

Post-punkowy charakter, zimnofalowe tła i linia basu na pierwszym planie oraz przejmujące post-rockowe momenty. Local Blood to litewski kwartet z Wilna, który musiał nasłuchać się The Horrors i zaczął grać swoją wersję czegoś pomiędzy "Strange House" a "Skying". 

Wszystko zaczyna się od historii nocy, podczas której wyrósł las - kompozycji łączącej zimny syntezator i gorące gitary, a potem jest tylko lepiej bo dochodzi wokal Šarūnas Vyštartas (gdyby nazywał się Badwanas to wcale by mnie to nie zdziwiło - jeśli przesadzam w porównaniach do Horrors to tylko dlatego, że darzę ich ogromnym szacunkiem). Całość brzmi jednocześnie niepokojąco i przebojowo - nic dziwnego skoro teksty nie opisują najprzyjemniejszych doświadczeń. "Klęczę sam / ja i moje myśli / pod maską / którą widzą inni" ("Crawling Borders"), czy "Zagłębiam się w przeszłości / tracę teraźniejszość / wzburzenie to mój nowy przyjaciel" ("Past Perfect Continous").

Największe wrażenie robi jednak ostatni utwór, którego powtarzany wkoło tekst zamienia się w hymn dla, no właśnie, dla czego? Czy chodzi o toksyczny związek, w którym jedna strona czuje się dobrze będąc kontrolowana? A może o coś więcej? Po wielu kolejnych odsłuchaniach, które i tak planuję, może do tego dojdę.

Alles Club - 1999 (2016) EN

Some bands are created on the spur of the moment and after a while they have already two albums and several awards, other just *can't* get started. This is the story of Alles Club, the band that came through after Luiz Alberto Moura listened to a demo recorded by himself with some friends... 17 years before. "1999" is a tribute to this moment and, let's hope so, the beginning of the Brazilian (though recording also in Portugal and Switzerland) shoegazers' career.

The tribute is noticeable in the very first moments of the album with a piece of an old very low quality recording in the beginning of the first track, which has to be a reminder of the lost demo. Even though the album has only three songs, every one of them offers something special. "Eclipse" is a delicate and catchy melody with vocal full of reverbs, "Só Hoje" warms up slowly from a romantic ballad through full of backing vocals middle up to a real shoegaze ocean of sound. "Brilhar" is based on deep sounds of drums and some trumpets in the background. It's a pity it is also the end of the EP.

The band's motto is "sad music and loud guitars" which, together with their musical sensibility makes me wait for more material by the Brazilians.

Alles Club - 1999 (2016) PL

Niektóre zespoły powstają spontanicznie i po chwili mają już na koncie dwie płyty i trzy platyny, inne długo *nie chcą* powstać. Tak było z Alles Club, który zawiązał się na dobre po tym jak Luiz Alberto Moura odsłuchał dema nagrane przez siebie i przyjaciół... 17 lat temu. "1999" to hołd dla tego wydarzenia i, miejmy nadzieję, początek prawdziwej kariery brazylijskich (choć nagrywających też w Portugalii i Szwajcarii) shoegazerowców.

Hołd ten czuć też w momencie, gdy pierwszy utwór zaczyna się od kawałka starego nagrania w bardzo słabej jakości, z pewnością pochodzącego ze starego dema. Mimo, że płyta zawiera tylko trzy utwory, każdy coś sobą reprezentuje. "Eclipse" to łagodna i wpadająca w ucho melodia i wokal pełen eterycznych reverbów. "Só Hoje" rozkręca się nieśpiesznie z nastrojowej ballady przez naszpikowany chórkami środek w stronę shoegaze'owego oceanu dźwięku. "Brilhar" oparta jest natomiast na głęboko brzmiących uderzeniach bębna i instrumentów dętych trąbiących gdzieś w tle. Szkoda tylko, że całość się na niej kończy.

Hasłem przewodnim muzyków jest "smutna muzyka i głośne gitary", co w połączeniu z muzyczną wrażliwością sprawia, że ostrzę pazurki na więcej materiału od Brazylijczyków.

XMDMX / DCDNS - Айзельгерц (2016) EN

It's a peculiar thing to listen to hip-hop, even the most abstract one, and have so little idea about the lyrics. On the other hand you can always treat the voice as another instrument and enjoy the whole composition, just like it is with ambient or post-rock. XMDMX makes it certainly possible. The very first piano sounds bought me and there is also the artist's voice which has so little in common with hip-hp. He sounds like suffering bard reciting poetry with his deep, resonating way of speaking. If it's not goth-hop I don't know what could be.

The tracks' titles say something about the topics they handle. There's "Dust", "Confession" and "Shadows", titles that could appear on a dark ambient album. There's also "Ole Lukkoye" - a tribute song for the Russian band that combined progressive rock with shamanic Tuva influences under Gorbachev. Perhaps it's time to learn some Russian to understand the album better.

XMDMX is a universal artist, he publishes also a series of short clips on his Instagram under a shared name "Project: Melancholia". You can hardly not like him.

XMDMX / DCDNS - Айзельгерц (2016) PL

Dziwnie jest słuchać hip-hopu, nawet tego najbardziej abstrakcyjnego, nie rozumiejąc słów. Z drugiej strony, można głos potraktować jak kolejny instrument i cieszyć się całą kompozycją, niczym ambientem czy post-rockiem. Z XMDMX na pewno się to udaje. Już pierwsze dźwięki pianina mnie kupują, a do tego głos artysty, który z hip-hopem nie ma nic wspólnego. Brzmi jak cierpiący bard recytujący poezję głębokim, rezonującym głosem. Jeżeli to nie jest goth-hop to nic nigdy nie będzie.

Tytuły utworów mówią co nieco o tematyce. Jest więc i "Pył" i "Spowiedź" i "Cienie", tytuły wyjęte z ponurej dark ambientowej płyty. Jest też "Ole Lukkoye" - piosenka na cześć rosyjskiego zespołu łączącego za Gorbaczewa rock progresywny z szamańskimi wpływami z Tuwy. Być może czas zacząć naukę rosyjskiego żeby móc dowiedzieć się więcej.

XMDMX jest artystą uniwersalnym, na swoim Instagramie publikuje serię filmów pod wiele mówiącym wspólnym tytułem "Projekt: Melancholia". Nie da się nie polubić.

Blushing - Tether (2017) EN

Apparently the end of a year should involve some rocking. Well then, why not say farewell to the 2016 with a hit? The first hit of the next year - a debut album by Texas-based Blushing. And to be more exact, with the opening track of the EP - "Teteher", a song I hum for a week now.

Blushing have everything to become something in the rocking world of shoegaze - a suitable guitar temper, catchy melodies and sweet and airy voice of Christina Carmona. And even a great and fitting name - if you check the link to their Bandcamp it says "weareblushing", are they blushing after an ecstatic concert or because of they are introvert artists, like true shoegazers should be? I'd bet on both answers to be true.
