Isahi - Nisahilism (2016) EN

Nihilism - a belief that there is no reason for existence, a state that is perfect to scream it out to the world. Which is what Isahi - a one person project from South Korea, exactly does. "The rift between my world and this world completes my Nihilism, and this album is the stories of that" he writes. And since it's Isahi's nihilism it could only be called nisahilism.

The album begins with sounds of quite classical strings that made me think of Asian violinists' music enriched with some electronic. And this feeling goes through the whole album and, although they are sometimes only a background for some heavier sounds, they definitely give a unique flavour to the whole thing. And so the album flows - nice drifting strings and dreamy keys and an unsettling noise in the background. Which already in "The Plague" turns into roaring guitars and everything transforms from a dream into a real nightmare. The whole Isahi's nihilism is a mixture of dreaming and being lost in nightmares.

And I proclaim "Eating Bodies Together" the most romantic song title of 2016.

Nihilizm - przeświadczenie o braku celowości istnienia, stan, który nadaje się jak nic innego by wykrzyczeć go światu. Isahi - jednoosobowy projekt z Korei Południowej właśnie to robi. "Wyrwa między tym światem a światem moim dopełnia mój nihilizm i ten album właśnie o tym opowiada" pisze Koreańczyk. A że jest to nihilizm Isahiego siłą rzeczy nazywać się musi nisahilizmem.

Płytę otwierają całkiem klasyczne dźwięki smyczków przywodzące na myśl podbarwione elektroniką wyczyny azjatyckich skrzypków. I to wrażenie nie znika przez cały album, mimo że często są one jedynie podkładem pod cięższe nuty, nadają całości charakterystycznego brzmienia. I tak płynie sobie ta płyta - przyjemnie dryftujące smyczki i rozmarzone klawisze, a w tle niepokojący szum. Który już w "The Plague" zamienia się w końcu w charczące gitary, a wszystko zaczyna nagle niepokojąco przekraczać ze snu w koszmar. Cały nihilizm Isahiego to plątanina melodyjnych snów i dramatycznych sennych mar.

A "Eating Bodies Together" dostaje ode mnie nagrodę za najbardziej romantyczny tytuł '16.

Agura Matra - Die With You (2016) EN

Hardly ever do I reach so distant musical areas as Indonesia. Which is a mistake. It's a country with a good number of alternative projects (e.g. this week I listen to the debute EP by Annie Hall). Another example is Agung Rama Putra known as Agura Matra who describes his job in a simple way - "I manipulate sounds". And he knows what he does.

Lively backgrounds of almost dance-like samples wonderfully contrast with melancholic, dreampop vocal. It sounds best in "Good Night" in which great airy keys play their role too, or in, perhaps the best track of the album, "Daggers and Horns" where everything matches everything as if it never were separate sounds. The album is filled with aspiring hits up to the end ("Good Night", "Die With You"!) with all of them equipped with heavy church- or even funeral-like keys that build the melodies.

Agura Matra - Die With You (2016) PL

Rzadko kiedy zapuszczam się muzycznie w tak dalekie rejony jakimi jest Indonezja, a to błąd. To kraj, który ma w zanadrzu bardzo dużo alternatywnego towaru (w tym tygodniu słucham na przykład debiutanckiej epki Annie Hall). Kolejnym przykładem jest Agung Rama Putra tworzący jako Agura Matra, który swoje zajęcia określa jasno - "manipuluję dźwiękami", a robi to z dużą gracją.

Żywe podkłady prawie tanecznych sampli zachwycająco kontrastują z melancholijnym, dreampopowym wokalem. Najlepiej wychodzi to w "Good Night", gdzie dochodzą jeszcze ulotne i fenomenalne klawisze, czy w najlepszym chyba "Daggers and Horns", w którym wszystko zgrywa się jakby nigdy nie istniało jako osobne dźwięki. Album aż do końca przepełniony jest potencjalnym przebojami z charakterystycznymi, brzmiącymi kościelnie albo nawet pogrzebowo klawiszami budującymi melodie.

Coastlands - Milieu Archives : Two (2016) EN

Loud ambient or barely hearable post-rock, somewhere on the border of the genres find themselves Coastlands, a quartet based in Portland. Their new album is a kind of speedpainting transferred into the field of music - as the artists themselves inform, it was created in just a week, recording and mastering included. Spontaneity makes emotions feel more real but in my humble opinion, the album sounds as if it was very carefully planned.

All the sounds match each other perfectly from the beginning up to the end, they build up an intriguing soundscape in which the dominant parts are reserved for guitars and, I guess, violins. There are also quite unsuspected moments like e.g. fast drumbeat lurking somewhere in the shadows of "Flora and Fauna". The whole thing is so attractive also because it can't be exactly marked as ambient or post-rock. If you feel interested you should also check the first part "Milieu Archives : One" that was released in April 2015.

Coastlands - Milieu Archives : Two (2016) PL

Głośny ambient albo ledwo słyszalny post-rock, gdzieś na granicy tych gatunków balansuje kwartet z Portland nazywający się Coastlands. Ich nowy album to rodzaj speedpaintingu przetranserowanego na pole muzyczne - sami artyści uprzejmie informują, że cały album powstał w przeciągu tygodnia, łącznie z nagraniem i masterowaniem. Z czym to się wiąże? Spontaniczność na pewno buduje prawdziwość emocji ale moim zdaniem album brzmi jakby był bardzo starannie zaplanowany.

Od początku do końca wszystkie dźwięki do siebie pasują i budują intrygujący muzyczny pejzaż, w którym dominują przesterowane gitary i bodajże skrzypce. Pojawiają się też całkiem niespodziewane momenty jak czające się na granicy słyszalności szybkie werble w utworze "Flora and Fauna". Całość jest niezwykle nastrojowa również dlatego, że umyka tradycyjnemu podziałowi na ambient i post-rock. Zainteresowani powinni sprawdzić wydaną w kwietniu 2015 część pierwszą "Milieu Archives : One".

Local Blood - A Lure Of Sights (2016) EN

Post-punk temper, coldwave backgrounds and the bass line put in the foreground with poignant post-rock moments. Local Blood is a Lithuanian quartet based in Vilnius, that listened to The Horrors a lot and decided to record something between "Strange House" and "Skying.

Everything begins with the story of a night when a forest grew - a composition of cold synthesizer and hot guitars. After which it's only getting better as Šarūnas Vyštartas' vocal adds to the mixture (I wouldn't be very surprised if his name was Badwanas - if I exaggerate with the comparisons it's only because I have only respect for The Horrors). The whole thing sounds both disturbing and so catchy, no wonder, the lyrics deal with hardly pleasant experiences. "I kneel alone / My thoughts and me / Beneath the mask / That others see" ("Crawling Borders") or "I dig in my past / I lose the present / A commotion is a new friend of mine" ("Past Perfect Continous").

The strongest impression is left by last track whose repeated lyrics make it a sort of anthem for... For what exactly? Is it about a toxic relationship in which one side feels good being controlled? Or perhaps there's something more? After some more listening, which I'm planning anyway, I may find it out.
