The End Of The Ocean is a guitar collective from Columbus, Ohio, or, as the musicians themselves state, "a monumental slab of instrumental post-rock". On the tenth anniversary of their existence, they released an album called-aire.

The main characteristic of the American's music is the combination of really heavy guitar sounds with some really charming keys. Because of that they sound somewhat like an avalanche, but one in which you can notice the snowflakes' beauty. This rapid pace is what they are kin on, but sometimes they get slower and when they do, they become a personification of beautiful, instrumental magic (as it is in self). But they best when they combine the two modes and that's why the album's best track would be homesick, a song about this overpowering state of longing after a place from your memories.

The End Of The Ocean to gitarowy kolektyw z Columbus w stanie Ohio albo, jak chcą sami muzycy, "monumentalny kawał instrumentalnego post-rocka". Na dziesięciolecie swojej działalności wydali album -aire.

Znakiem rozpoznawczym Amerykanów jest połączenie naprawdę ciężkich gitar z naprawdę urokliwymi klawiszami. Dzięki temu brzmią oni trochę jak nadchodząca lawina, w której da się dostrzec piękno poszczególnych płatków śniegu. Bardzo rzadko odchodzą od tego gwałtownego tempa, ale gdy to robią to nagle stają się personifikacją magicznej muzyki instrumentalnej (tak jak w self). Najlepiej natomiast brzmią, gdy łączą oba tryby i tak właśnie jest w najlepszym na pycie homesick brzmiącym jak pełna uczucia symfonia o tym przejmującym stanie, w którym tęsknisz do miejsca ze swoich wspomnień.

Bethany Curve - Murder! (2019) EN

The Californian Bethany Curve are another shoegaze classic who are back with new material. Being an American reply to the first wave of the legendary now projects such as My Bloody Valentine, the band released their last album in 2003. Now they came back and they did it with style.

As could be expected from and old school shoegaze band, Murder! is filled with thick and loud guitars and vocals that have more post-punk characteristics than dream pop ones. In this way they are closer to Jesus and Mary Chain or RIDE than to MBV. On the other hand, their compositions are long-winded and not so intensive and it makes them easier to drown into their melancholic-melodic atmosphere.

Especially that almost each of the tracks gets straight to the listeners' heads. From the moody introduction in I'm Alive (which obviously is the band's statement about their condition), through the album's best Dreamland with its hardly optimistic message but also with fabulous atmosphere, up to the ballad called Glory. The last one is te perfect example of the band's slow way of making music that at the same time keeps the audience's attention through the whole hour of the album's duration.

Bethany Curve - Murder! (2019) PL

Kalifornijskie Bethany Curve to kolejny shoegaze'owy klasyk, który wraca po latach z nowym materiałem. Zespół był amerykańską odpowiedzią na pierwszą falę legendarnych już kapel pokroju My Bloody Valentine, a swój ostatni krążek wydał w 2003 roku. Teraz wraca i robi to z przytupem.

Tak jak należało się spodziewać po old-schoolowej formacji shoegaze'owej, na Murder! zespół stawia na gęste i głośne gitary i wokal, który ma w sobie więcej z post-punku niż z dream popu. W tym podobni są bardziej do Jesus and Mary Chain czy RIDE niż do MBV. Z drugiej strony, ich kompozycje są trochę rozwlekłe, i nie tak intensywne. To sprawia, że łatwo się jest zanurzyć w tej melancholijno-melodyjnej atmosferze.

Zwłaszcza że poszczególne utwory na płycie zapadają w pamięć. Od nastrojowego wprowadzenia w I'm Alive (którym z pewnością zespół chce wygłosić statement o swojej kondycji), przez najlepszy na płycie Dreamland z mało optymistycznym przekazem ale też fantastyczną atmosferą, czy balladę Glory. W tej ostatniej najlepiej odzwierciedla się ta niespieszność muzyki zespołu, który potrafi bez problemów trzymać uwagę słuchaczy przez całą godzinę trwania płyty.

Prime Alone - Monolog (2018) EN

Prime Alone is a solo project by Petr Gidulyanov from Sankt Petersburg, devoted to guitar music and inspired by Kokomo or The Chasing Monster among others. His new album called Monolog is something undoubtedly worth getting familiar with.

The artist wrote the album's music with is mind occupied by "the human as a person and the core of the universe", his meaning for himself and for the infinite universe. But also with Erich Maria Remarque's works. The music here changed a bit comparing to the artist's earlier albums, its sound is now darker, "much more massive and heavier". 

Heavier it really is, Gidulyanov doesn't hesitate from attacking the audience with, sometimes ridiculously loud guitar sounds, the power of which can easily crush the listener. And it does so, with some short breaks, throughout the whole album. It makes it so melancholic in this sad, helplessly aggressive way. Worth it.

Prime Alone - Monolog (2018) PL

Prime Alone to solowy projekt Petra Gidulyanova z Sankt Petersburga poświęcony gitarowemu graniu i inspirowany m.in. Kokomo czy The Chasing Monster. Jego nowa płytka to Monolog i zdecydowanie warto się z nią zapoznać.

Artysta pisał muzykę na płycie z myślą o "człowieku jako osobie i centrum wszechświata", o jego znaczeniu dla samego siebie i dla nieskończonego wszechświata, jak również o prozie Erich Marii Remarque'a. W muzyce na albumie zmieniło się trochę w porównaniu do poprzednich albumów, a brzmienie Prime Alone stało się mroczniejsze, "dużo bardziej masywne i cięższe". 

Jest zdecydowanie ciężko, Gidulyanov nie waha się przed atakowaniem słuchaczy absurdalnie wręcz głośnymi gitarowymi dźwiękami, których moc potrafi wgnieść w ziemię. I robi tak, z przerwami, przez całą długość płyty. Dzięki temu jest ona melancholijna w ten smutny, bezsilnie agresywny sposób. Polecam.

Melasse - Demo Tape (2018) EN

Although Melasse is a Russian band that play metal compositions as thick as the project's name, at the end of the last year they surprised the audience by releasing an album with acoustic versions of their songs. And they managed to make a great impression in this way.

The album's tracks are built not on the electric guitars and noise but on the acoustic ones and this melancholic vibe. And, what's very important, on Ekaterina Yezhova's vocal that sucks the audience into those sadness-filled compositions. This all makes the album strike with a lot of dark folk atmosphere that in the end is destroyed with a droning track hidden behind the album's last Саван.

Another beautiful thing is the cover art with Félix Thiollier's picture from over a millennium ago. No doubt it fits the dark folk climate of the album.
