Des Astres are a young French band who play some exceptionally atmospheric post-rock. They show it in the short EP released mid January, called Traxx.

If someone likes epic instrumental music with clear love for dense and dark ambiance, des Astres deliver something for them. The band's keen on playing loud, guitar compositions that have so much imaginativeness and grandeur in them that they give the audience the shivers. It is especially true for the EP-closing Osumi whose first part functions as tense-and-sadness-filled introduction that develops into loud, breathtaking finish. Worth recommending.

Des Astres to młody francuski zespół grający kawał naprawdę atmosferycznego post-rocka. Pokazuje to krótka EP-ka wydana w połowie stycznia, zatytułowana Traxx.

Jeśli ktoś lubi epickie instrumentalne granie z wyraźnym zamiłowaniem do gęstej i mrocznej atmosfery to des Astres tworzą muzykę właśnie dla niego. Zespół ma skłonności do grania głośnych, gitarowych kompozycji, które mają w sobie tyle polotu i rozmachu, że powodują u słuchaczy ciarki na grzbiecie. Zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zamykający EP-kę Osumi, którego pierwsza połowa to pełen napięcia i smutku wstęp zamieniający się w końcu w głośny, zapierający dech w piersiach finał. Godne polecenia.

OOBE - OOBE (2019) EN

OOBE function now as a trio - the producers duet of Wojciech Hass and Grzegorz Ciemciach-Pikselo together with the vocalist and lyricist Aleksandra Szalińska (known as FLicker Fox). Their debut album OOBE makes another one in the last months released by Trzy Szóstki records label, that made a great impression on me.

Already the first sounds announce the uniqueness of the project's music. The album's electronics are complex and yet extremely atmospheric which, together with Szalińsk'a vocal, results in some world class dark electro-pop Borusiade or Apparat style. But unlike those, OOBE's vocalist is not afraid of experimenting with her voice sounding usually somewhat like Karen Andersson, but sometimes (as in present (in)tense) going towards extremely high and beautiful levels.

Szalińska is not the only vocalist on the album. In more synthwave compositions (for example in we have no time to fascinate the crowd), the voice is provided by Magdalena Starska. And the whole music layer is haunted by the industrial spirit that gets even more present in the tracks where another guest, Rav Piekoszewski's guitar plays the main part.

OOBE funkcjonuje obecnie jako trio - duet producencki Wojciech Hass-Grzegorz Ciemciach-Pikselo oraz wokalistka i tekściarka Aleksandra Szalińska (znana jako FLicker Fox). Ich debiutancki album OOBE jest kolejnym w ostatnich miesiącach krążkiem ze stajni Trzech Szóstek, który zrobił na mnie duże wrażenie. 

Już pierwsze dźwięki zapowiadają nietuzinkowość muzyki projektu. Elektronika na albumie jest kompleksowa jednocześnie bardzo klimatyczna, a to w połączeniu z wokalem Szalińskiej skutkuje światowego poziomu mrocznym electro-popem w stylu Borusiade czy Apparatu. W odróżnieniu jednak od tych projektów, wokalistka OOBE nie boi się eksperymentować z głosem czasem brzmiąc całkiem jak Karen Andersson, a czasem tak jak w present (in)tense wchodzi na niebywale wysokie rejestry i robi to w niezwykle piękny sposób.

Szalińska nie jest jedyną wokalistką pojawiającą się na płycie. W bardziej synthwave'owych kawałkach (we have no time to fascinate the crowd) śpiewa Magdalena Starska. A nad warstwą muzyczną w całej rozciągłości płyty unosi się industrialny duch, który nasila się jeszcze, gdy pojawiają się gitarowe dźwięki innego gościa: Rava Piekoszewskiego.

Sediment Bruise - In​-​Between (2019) EN

Sedminet Bruise come from the Greek Thessaloniki and play post-rock hued indie rock. And they do that so well that their music caught my attention although it's not entirely in the blog's genre's spectre. Still, the unique and quality way of making music made it impossible for me to ignore their new album In-Between.

The band is characterized by "by atmospheric post melodies, which harmoniously combine the unique sound of the violin with the classic rhythm section and the urban aesthetic-fully emotional vocals". and those vocals are indeed something that immediately catches attention. They are unorthodox, uniquely coloured and often dispersed. They align well with the loud, guitar-synth music and catchy melodies. And the atmosphere of the album is the work of airy backing vocals and violins.

One can't say that the Greeks can't write catchy songs. They do it with the help of some tricks like children (or children-sounding) choir in Mirror, or almost orchestral chorus with the Verve's vibe in The Shore,  And there are those violins, I love their sound everywhere, but here they sound especially great, also with in combination with samples in Emergency Response.

Sediment Bruise - In​-​Between (2019) PL

Sedminet Bruise są z greckich Salonik i grają zabarwionego post-rockiem indie rocka. Robią to na tyle dobrze, że zwrócili moją uwagę, mimo, że nie jest to do końca muzyka tego bloga. Niemniej oryginalność i poziom wykonania ich nowego albumu In-Between nie pozwalał mi przejść obok niego obojętnie.

Zespół charakteryzuje się "klimatycznymi post melodiami, które harmonijnie łączą wyjątkowy dźwięk skrzypiec i klasyczną sekcję rytmiczną z pełnymi emocji wokalami". I właśnie te wokale od razu rzucają się w uszy. Są one niestandardowe, o niezwykłej barwie i często przerobione. Dobrze komponują się z głośną, gitarowo-syntezatorową muzyką i chwytliwymi melodiami. O atmosferę dbają natomiast eteryczne chóry i skrzypce.

Nie można odmówić Grekom umiejętności pisania wpadających w ucho kawałków. Posiłkują się przy tym takimi zagraniami jak dziecięcy (dziecięco-brzmiący?) chór w Mirror, czy prawie orkiestralny refren w stylu The Verve w The Shore.  No i te skrzypce, jestem fanem każdych, ale tutaj brzmią wyjątkowo dobrze, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z samplami w Emergency Response.

The End Of The Ocean - -aire (2019) EN

The End Of The Ocean is a guitar collective from Columbus, Ohio, or, as the musicians themselves state, "a monumental slab of instrumental post-rock". On the tenth anniversary of their existence, they released an album called-aire.

The main characteristic of the American's music is the combination of really heavy guitar sounds with some really charming keys. Because of that they sound somewhat like an avalanche, but one in which you can notice the snowflakes' beauty. This rapid pace is what they are kin on, but sometimes they get slower and when they do, they become a personification of beautiful, instrumental magic (as it is in self). But they best when they combine the two modes and that's why the album's best track would be homesick, a song about this overpowering state of longing after a place from your memories.
