Dłonie - Dłonie (2019) EN

A new non-obvious and wayward very-much-alt-pop-rock from the Trzy Szóstki label, this time it's the trio Dłonie ("hands", because we know there are always three of them). Non-hurrying pace and atmospheric lyrics, this can be experienced on their debut album simply called Dłonie.

The band's music sounds like traditional Polish guitar pop filtered with every indie filter out there. Here we go. Jeśli ("if") starts with some peaceful guitar dance and sounds like an old-school Polish pop rock band such as Czerwonych Gitar but at the same time there's some dirt in it, some noise and a lot of non-obvious lyrics. It gets even more interesting in the very much unnerving Burza ("storm"). There's a catchy melody here, lyrics and also the music layer.

The whole album sounds exactly like this mixture of pop ballad music with Polish indie. With some fragments of noise (Czas ("time")), charming ballad (Ćmy ("moths")) or epic grandeur (the already mentioned Burza ).  A good deal of new-old good indie pop rock.

Dłonie costs whatever you want to pay.

Kokomo - Totem Youth (2019) EN

Great news, the German Kokomo decided to join the many post-rock bands releasing great albums this year. That's why we can appreciate their fifth album Totem Youth that, if it was not enough, can be your for free!

You have to agree that the band can express themselves not only with music but also in writing, you should read their text about their own music on the Facebook profile. "We never frantically tried to reinvent the genre, but we hope we can set ourselves apart with new album and upcoming shows, reach people and evoke something in them" - this is something that the Germans absolutely succeed in, also on the newest album. Their music is heavy and difficult to speed up, but when it does, it's like a locomotive that crushes everything on its way.

It's interesting in Narcosis in which the rapidness is missing but thanks to this, the dark and loud composition creates a mesmerizing effect. In the impressive Golden Guns it develops in a slow but epic way. And in Melodic Rock Night it's enriched by... vocals. And it sounds like Alcest would in a more post-rock form.

Kokomo - Totem Youth (2019) PL

Life On Venus - Odes to the Void (2019) EN

I have to state it clearly: I'm a fan of the latest shoegaze wave from Russia as both Blankenberge and Life on Venus got to be known as projects playing fascinating music both live and on records. From those two, the Petersburg-based band have already released a good album this year, now it's time for their friends from Moscow. And Odes to the Void doesn't disappoint.

The album is advertised as "loud, gloomy and surreal" making "a story about finding love, overcoming fears and facing the unknown". It's opened with a very ballad-like Glass Gardens in whose sea of  swaying guitars, slow vocals drift. But this blissful atmosphere is not for long as the next track is one already released on this year's EP Departure, namely shoegaze's fastest For the Kill. And it as to be said that the older songs (together with Silver Screen and my favourite What Lies Beneath) really lead this album.

From the new ones, the ones to stand out are the gently rocking A Story Ends, drums-dominated Darker Than Blue and finally the particularly impressive finish in At the Point of No Return. In all of those case, the band's vibe is clear: dark wall of guitar sounds making up the homogeneous background with subtle vocals floating around like fog and with powerful bass line/drums. It's a treat to listen to a young band who know what they want to do and who's so successful in this.

Odes to the Void costs 9.99 USD.

Life On Venus - Odes to the Void (2019) PL

I Odes to the Void nie zawodzi.

I trzeba przyznać, że starsze kawałki (razem z Silver Screen i moim ulubionym What Lies Beneath) napędzają nowy album.

Z nowości wybijają się kołyszące A Story Ends, zdominowany perkusją Darker Than Blue czy w końcu nadzwyczaj efektowne zakończenie w At the Point of No Return.

Odes to the Void kosztuje 40 złotych (9,99 USD).

Goodbye Laura Palmer - III (2019) EN

Goodbye Laura Palmer is a really underhyped project. He appeared on my blog two years ago with the second album, now I'm writing about his third one and not much has changed, the artist doesn't even have a Facebook fanpage. But he still makes some great music that can be listened to on III.

Just like on the previous albums, the attention is grabbed by the deep, fascinating vocal. A bit like Leonard Cohen, a bit like Rob Goodwin of The Slow Show. Plus moody, slowcore compositions fitting the heavy autumn weather perfectly. In some moments, as in You Know That I... the atmosphere is turned up and some tangible danger is felt in the air, in other ones, the peaceful melancholy takes over and doesn't want to stop. One of those albums that have to be admired in autumns.

III costs whatever you want to pay.
