The Death Notes - The Black EP (2018) PL

The Death Notes, zespół porównywany do takich legend jak Joy Division, The Pixies czy Sonic Youth wyrobił sobie już pewną markę w Anglii dzięki wydanej dwa lata temu EP-ce "White". Teraz powracają zmieniając przy tym gwałtownie kolorystykę z bardzo udaną kontynuacją na "Black".

Tak jak kolor cover artu, mroczniejsza zrobiła się muzyka zespołu z Nottingham. Po poszerzeniu składu o basistę Mike'a Sinclaira stała się ona gęstsza, ale nie znaczy to, że ucierpiała melodyjność. Wystarczy posłuchać "Gift of Fear", w którym post-punkowo minimalistyczna muzyka akompaniuje wokalowi Marka Saxtona, nadającemu całości hitowego brzmienia. Dopiero pod koniec kawałka gitary starają się go zagłuszyć, a całość dryfuje w stronę post-rocka.

Zespół sprawnie porusza się też w bardziej drapieżnych, punk-rockowych klimatach ("Evolver") czy zupełnie instrumentalnym graniu ("Theme"), jednak najlepiej wyglądają, gdy pozwalają wokalowi wyprawiać cuda na tle post-punkowych gitar.

The Death Notes - The Black EP (2018) EN

The Death Notes, a band often compared to legends such as Joy Division, The Pixies or Sonic Youth, have already earned some fame after releasing an EP "White" two years ago. This time they are back in a colour-changing way with a new album "Black".

Just like the cover art's colour, somewhat darker is also the Nottingham based band's music. After adding the bassist Mike Sinclair to the line-up, it got more dense but is still really melodic. You can just listen to "Gift of Fear" in which the post-punk's minimalist music accompanies Mark Saxton's vocal that brings some hit song's potential to it. Not until the track's finish, the guitars finally try to take over the foreground and the whole thing heads towards post-rock music.

The band is capable of navigating through more aggressive, punk-rock waters ("Evolver") or clearly instrumental music ("Theme"), but reach their best when they let the vocal make its magic on the post-punk guitar background.

Emerald Zombi - toxic emerald (2018) EN

Tons of airiness, electronics and fantasy, this is Emerald Zombi, a project from the Country of Cherry Blossom. Project that gives no information about itself released a debut album "toxic emerald" and it's definitely worth acknowledging.

The toxicity in this music are responsible acid samples making your face wry, just like the over saturated cover art. The emerald here would be the airy vocals accompanying the music every minute of the album. It doesn't change a thing that they were made with the help of vocaloid, if something sounds good, it sounds good. The most interesting part is when the airy vocal starts to make sense with legitimate lyrics which, together with appearing out of thin air guitars and clear drums, sounds like a little bit weird, android-like shoegaze.

Emerald Zombi - toxic emerald (2018) PL

Dużo eteryczności, elektroniki i fantazji, taki jest Emerald Zombi, projekt z Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni. Projekt, o którym nie wiadomo zupełnie nic, wydał swoją debiutancką płytę "toxic emerald" i jest to wydawnictwo godne zauważenia.

Za toksyczność w muzyce projektu odpowiadają kwaśne sample wykrzywiające twarz podobnie jak przesycona kolorami grafika na cover arcie. Szmaragdem w tym brzmieniu są za to eteryczne chórki towarzyszące muzyce w każdym momencie płyty. Nie zmienia niczego fakt, że zostały nagrane za pomocą vocaloidu, jeśli coś brzmi dobrze to brzmi dobrze. Najciekawiej robi się, gdy eteryczny wokal nabiera sensu i słów, co w połączeniu z pojawiającymi się nagle znienacka gitarami i wybijającymi się ponad wszystko perkusjami, brzmi jak odrobinę dziwny, androidowy shoegaze.

Mortar - past present future (2018) EN

The Mayasian hardcore has never sounded as good as on the new album by Mortar. This is obviously my joke because I have next to nothing about the Malaysian hardcore scene but if it's at least half as good as the new release by the band from Kuantan, it''s worth checking out.

Just like under the fire from a real mortar, we are being attacked from the very beginning with aggressive vocals and hardly less aggressive guitars. But also there's no mistake that Mortar has being experimental written down in the modus operandi, "Bruised Heart" introduces some peace and even swinging guitars. But as you'd expect, this is only a silence before another storm as "Anaerobic" is made of next waves of screamy noise with some interesting samples within.

The most interesting sound is shown in "past.present.future", a track very complex for a hardcore noise, serving some well-leveled spoken word and multi-dimensional composition together with the solid screaming.

Mortar - past present future (2018) PL

Malezyjski hardcore nigdy nie brzmiał tak dobrze jak na nowej płycie Mortar. To oczywiście zgrywa, bo niewiele wiem o malezyjskiej scenie hardcore'owej, jeśli jednak jest co najmniej w połowie tak dobra, jak wydawnictwo zespołu z Kuantanu, warto się nią zainteresować.

Tak jak pod ostrzałem prawdziwego moździerza, od początku jesteśmy atakowani non-stop agresywnymi wokalami i nieustępującymi im w agresji gitarami. Jednak nie na darmo Mortar ma w modus operandi wpisaną eksperymentalność, "Bruised Heart" wprowadza z kolei spokój i kołyszące wręcz gitary. Tak jak należało się jednak spodziewać, jest to cisza przed kolejną burzą bo "Anaerobic" to kolejne fale krzykliwego hałasu poprzetykanego ciekawymi samplami.

Najciekawiej brzmi tytułowy "past.present.future", utwór bardzo, jak na hardcore'owy hałas, skomplikowany i złożony, serwujący oprócz krzyków również wyważony spoken word i wielowymiarową kompozycję.

A Magnificent Cold - Nocturne (2018) EN

Sebastian Crugley best known as the driving force of the project called Alldrig has just released an album signed with his more nostalgic alias, A Magnificent Cold. "Nocturne" is filled with, obviously, night time music, neoclassical sounds with darker vibe.

The Argentinian created melancholy written with notes and poured it over the whole album.  The combination of piano keys and heavy sounding strings always sounds awesome, but Crugley added some of his magic that is audible on "Nocturne". Prepare tissues, turn off the lights and let this music/magic guide you.
