Деревянные киты - Супер (2019) EN

Деревянные киты meaning "Wooden Whales" come from Murmansk, behind the Arctic Circle, a fact you wouldn't guess if you listened only to their music. Their new album called Супер ("Super") shows some fantastically dynamic and simply lovely approach to the shoegaze-esque music.

They say that they started to play shoegaze, but there were things that happened and they ended up creating a "mix of moods and genres, from psychedelic to the energetic dream-pop". The first think you pay attention to is clearly the vocal by Svetlana Matveeva, one filled with unpretentious joy making you think at the same time of folk singing and theatrical performances. It bring to the Russians' music almost fairy-tale vibes that fits perfectly the band's name, cover art and everything else.

Also the music is far from traditional shoegaze/dream pop. It would better fit into psychedelic pop label, one that is not deafening nor too ear-engaging and is rather a nice compliment to lyrics and vocals. And I mean it no disrespect, especially when you hear the African rhythms in Вода, juicy guitar riffs in my favourite track Саванна, or just the whole composition in Огни.

Супер costs 7 USD.

Check: Саванна
Country: Russia
Genre: psychedelic pop
