Łagodna psychodelia Psychic Markers powraca na trzecim, wydanym jeszcze pod koniec maja albumie. To ważne bo po drodze... pojawiła się jeszcze jedna płyta. Ale tutaj skupię się na bardzo udanym Psychic Markers.

W muzyce Anglików sporo jest nie tylko z psychodelicznej atmosfery spod znaku Flaming Lips czy Grandaddy ale też bardzo kojarzy mi się z art popowym, wodewilowym Jonathanem Bree (jak ktoś nie wierzy, niech posłucha sobie Silence in the Room i zapyta sam siebie jak to nie znalazło się na Sleepwalking Nowozelandczyka. W innych miejscach to, łagodna bo łagodna, ale typowo psychodeliczna muzyka, tak w instrumentalnym Pulse jak i bardziej psych-rockowych Sacred Geometry czy Irrational Idol Thinking.

Płyta zespołu nazywana jest "pięknie zabutelkowanym czasem i miejscem, które magicznie stają się czymś zupełnie nowym", co sprowadza się do mnogości wrażeń, muzycznych światów, które tu się ze sobą stykają tworząc popową mieszankę, która jest nie tylko wciągająca ale też wielowymiarowa. Nie da się nudzić z hipnotyzującą wodzirejką londyńczyków.

Psychic Markers - Psychic Markers (2020) EN

Psychic Markers' delicate psychedelia psychodelia comes back on the third, May-released album. It's important because after that... another album appeared. But I will here focus on the very good Psychic Markers.

In the Englishmen's music there's a lot from not only psychedelic atmosphere with Flaming Vibes and Grandaddy's vibes but also reminds me a lot of the art pop, vaudeville-like Jonathan Bree (if you don't believe me, check out Silence in the Room and ask yourself how come it's not featured on the New Zealander's Sleepwalking. In other places, it's, however delicate, typical psychodelic music, both in the instrumental Pulse and more psych-rock Sacred Geometry and Irrational Idol Thinking.

The band's album is called a "beautiful bottling of time and place that magically ends up somewhere completely new", and this describes the variety of sensations, music worlds that collide here making a pop mixture that is both catchy and multidimensional. There's no way you can be bored with the London-based musicians' mesmerizing ceremony.

shedfromthebody - A Dead and Aimless Hum (2020) EN

Shedfromthebody is a "spooky baby" from Finland and it seems that those origins are well audible in her music. The artist released recently her debut album and, damn, is A Dead and Aimless Hum good.

On one hand shoegazing vocals and atmosphere, on the other clear doom vibes, this is the music served by the Finn. And then there are inspiration drawn from dark folk, blackgaze, etc. Interesting combo, in practice, it sounds like a darker, slower version of shoegaze created with delicately guitar-based but atmosphere-filled music. I was slightly afraid that the doom influences would sound kitschy but it quickly came to me that it's completely opposite - the Scandinavian, metal spirit makes the album more complex and it's no wonder that it was recommended by Violet Cold himself.

Those inspirations sometimes are better visible (as in the fueled with very metal guitar sounds Sol) but to me, the most important songs are those that could as well be featured on Chelsea Wolfe's Hiss Spun , as the great Curl and Cherubian Hand. Very, very good debut.

Shedfromthebody to "spooky baby" z Finlandii i wydaje się, że miejsce pochodzenia słychać w jej muzyce bardzo wyraźnie. Artystka wydała niedawno swój debiutancki album i, szlag, A Dead and Aimless Hum robi wrażenie.

Z jednej strony shoegaze'owe wokale i atmosfera, z drugiej słyszalne doomowe vibe'y, taką muzykę serwuje nam Finka. A do tego dochodzą inspiracje dark folkiem, blackgaze'em, etc. Ciekawa mieszanka, w praktyce brzmi to jak mroczniejsza, powolniejsza wersja shoegaze'u tworzonego z pomocą łagodnie gitarowej ale ociekającej atmosferą muzyki. Trochę się obawiałem, że doomowe naleciałości będą trąciły kiczem, ale szybko przekonałem się, że jest zupełnie inaczej - skandynawska, metalowa dusza dodaje płycie fantastycznej głębi, nic dziwnego, że album zdążył już polecić Violet Cold.

Czasem te inspiracje są lepiej widoczne (jak choćby w napędzanym bardzo gitarową gitarą Sol) ale na mnie największe wrażenie robią kawałki, które mogłyby znaleźć się na Hiss Spun Chelsea Wolfe jak na przykład znakomite Curl czy Cherubian Hand. Bardzo, bardzo dobry debiut.

Cuerpos Cósmicos - Rain (2020) EN

Cuerpos Cósmicos is an Argentinian-French artist who makes both music and visual arts. Here she comes with her new album that's an expansion of an EP under the same title.

Rain makes a tribute to the home-made minimalism, it "was made in 6 weeks, using a minimal setup: a laptop and a microphone". And, while this minimalism is well-audible, it doesn't bother the listener but quite the opposite, makes the whole thing even more charming. So we've got a lot of simple, airy music backgrounds that fit the exceptionally moody, as dispersed as possible vocals of the artist. One song that is particularly brilliant is the title track Rain the strength of which is the melody covered with a thick veil of ethereality.

So indie pop tracks dressed up as dream pop and made in the simplest ways. So great it worked as songs such as Rain, Paris or intimidating with its minimal beauty Silver Snow sound so well.

Cuerpos Cósmicos - Rain (2020) PL

Cuerpos Cósmicos to argentyńsko-francuska artystka tworząca zarówno muzykę jak i utwory wizualne. Tutaj wita z nową płytą stanowiącą rozwinięcie EP-ki o tym samym tytule.

Rain to pochwała domowego minimalizmu, "została stworzona w czasie sześciu tygodni za pomocą minimalnego setupu: laptopa i mikrofonu". I, o ile oczywiście minimalizm ten jest doskonale słyszalny, to nie tyle nie przeszkadza, co wręcz sprawia, że całość czaruje jeszcze bardziej. Mamy więc dużo prostych, eterycznych muzycznych podkładów, które świetnie współpracują z nadzwyczaj nastrojowym, rozproszonym do granic możliwości wokalem artystki. Genialnie prezentuje się tytułowe Rain, którego siłą jest melodyjność zakryta grubą woalą oniryzmu.

A więc indie popowe kawałki przebrane za dream pop i stworzone jak najprostszymi metodami. Fajnie, że się udało, a takie piosenki jak Rain, Paris czy onieśmielający minimalistyczną urodą Silver Snow brzmią świetnie.

Vysoké Čelo - Űrkutatás (2020) EN

For anyone who follows what the Opus Elefantum label does, Vysoké Čelo is nothing new. The artists, among whom there is also Janusz Jurga who appears on the blog from time to time, released already four albums and the fifth one joined in June. So let's listen to Űrkutatás.

The band's music makes a super rich mix. They draw something from ambient, something from folk, something from psychedelia, something from traditional rock (hey, II makes a really good song with the South States vibes), something from coldwave (hey, the second part of II makes a good song with wave vibes). And it's possible to go on listing those influences for a while, it's very difficult to close the band within any possible genre. And then, there's also a ton of different vocals, various moods - only in IV it ranges from sparky keys/glockenspiel and unnerving new age up to an airy finish.

Yeah, you can't get bored with the Poles.

Vysoké Čelo - Űrkutatás (2020) PL

Vysoké Čelo dla każdego, kto śledzi poczynania labelu Opus Elefantum, nie jest zespołem nowym. Artyści, wśród których jest też pojawiający się na moim blogu Janusz Jurga, mają na koncie już cztery albumy, a piąty dołączył do nich w czerwcu. Posłuchajmy więc Űrkutatás.

Muzyka zespołu to bardzo bogata mieszanka. Czerpią trochę z ambientu, trochę z folku, trochę z psychodelii, trochę z bardziej tradycyjnego rocka (ej, II to całkiem dobra kompozycja w stylu Południowych Stanów), trochę z zimnej fali (ej, druga część II to całkiem dobra kompozycja w wave'owym stylu). Na pewno można by tak wymieniać jeszcze długo, bardzo ciężko zamknąć styl zespołu w jakichkolwiek ramach. Do tego dochodzi tona różnych wokali, różnych nastrojów - w samym tylko IV od roziskrzonych klawiszy/dzwonków przez niepokojący new age po wręcz eteryczny finał. 

No, nie sposób się z Polakami nudzić.

Ten Sticks - T_S (2020) EN

Ten Sticks is a duo from UK's Newcastle (interestingly, there's another Ten Sticks but coming from Czech Republic) for whom instrumental improvisation is part of their nature. The musicians just released a collection of singles and remixes from 2014-18 entitled T_S.

Not to beat around the bush, for me the best improv music is one that doesn't show it's improved. And it's exactly in this example. The music of the band is based on the combination of guitar, drums and electronics including sometimes keys. And the whole thing sounds as if it was deeply thought-through aiming to create unique atmosphere in which everything is possible. Outstanding drums noise (The No.63 Bus Exploded into Light), electronic chaos (Line (Rail Cables)), subtle piano passages, this all can be found on the album.

And then, there are also remixes of songs from bands such as A Festival, A Parade and Ten. Undoubtedly they are some talented guys and although the albums is made as a collection of single tracks, it sounds like a well-constructed whole.

Ten Sticks - T_S (2020) PL

Ten Sticks to duet z angielskiego Newcastle (co ciekawe jest też zespół Ten Sticks z Czech), dla którego instrumentalna improwizacja to chleb powszedni. Muzycy wydali właśnie kolekcję singli i remiksów z lat 2014-18 zatytułowaną T_S.

Co tu dużo kryć, dla mnie najlepsza muzyka improwizowana to taka, po której tego nie słychać. Tak właśnie jest w tym przypadku. Muzyka zespołu opiera się na połączeniu gitar, perkusji i elektroniki, a do tego dochodzą też na przykład klawisze. I wszystko brzmi jak przemyślana robota mająca na celu stworzyć niepowtarzalną, abstrakcyjną atmosferę, w której wszystko jest możliwe. Wybijający się perkusyjny hałas (The No.63 Bus Exploded into Light), elektroniczny chaos (Line (Rail Cables)), spokojne pasaże wypełnione dźwiękami pianina, to wszystko spotkać można na albumie.

Do tego dochodzą też remiksy utworów takich zespołów jak A Festival, A Parade i Ten. Co tu kryć, utalentowane ziomki, mimo że płyta to tylko zbiór pojedynczych kawałków, słucha się jej jak dobrze skonstruowanej całości.

Masato Abe - Flew Out from Birth (2020) EN

Masato Abe is a Tokyo-based artist. He's not really known, his discography is short but all this makes it even more satisfying to enjoy his really good album Flew Out from Birth jest jeszcze bardziej satysfakcjonujące.  

The Japanese artist creates mostly instrumental music that, however, is still closest to dream pop. At first it's filled with bright, optimist but also subtle sounds. Due to that (and the presence of glockenspill-like sounds), it recalls the works of the British Tim and Sam's Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam. And when the vocals appear, there's absolutely no doubts that we deal with dream pop - dispersed, not very clear, sounding rather sad than ecstatic.

And it fits the change in the album's tone as as soon as from Lakeside it turns more melancholic and thoughtful. Sometimes this lead to some good acoustic noise (Gleam), sometimes to instrumental ambient (Osmosis), and even to a neoclassical ballad (Dreary). And finally, to the great, combining all of this track called Ridgeline. A really solid album.

Masato Abe - Flew Out from Birth (2020) PL

Masato Abe to artysta z Tokio. Nie jest specjalnie znany, a jego dorobek jest niewielki, ale to tym bardziej sprawia, że cieszenie się jego bardzo dobrą płytą Flew Out from Birth jest jeszcze bardziej satysfakcjonujące.  

Japoński artysta tworzy muzykę głównie instrumentalną, której najbliżej jednak do dream popu. Z początku wypełniają ją jasne, optymistyczne chociaż też ciche i subtelne dźwięki. Dzięki temu (i dzwonkom), przypomina mi bardziej akustyczną wersję brytyjski zespół Tim and Sam's Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam. Gdy za to pojawia się wokal to nie ma już najmniejszych wątpliwości, że mamy do czynienia z dream popem - rozmyty, nieprzesadnie wyraźny, brzmiący raczej smutno niż ekstatycznie. 

To też zgrywa się ze zmianą nastroju całej muzyki, która już od Lakeside staje się bardziej melancholijna i pełna zadumy. Czasami prowadzi to do niezłego akustycznego hałasu (Gleam), czasami do instrumentalnego ambientu (Osmosis), a nawet do neoklasycznej ballady (Dreary). A w końcu do świetnego, łączącego to wszystko Ridgeline. Bardzo solidny krążek.

Ghostly Kisses - Never Let Me Go (2020) EN

Margaux Sauvé, the artist behind Ghostly Kisses, stole my heart not only with her 2018 EP The City Holds My Heart but also with the wonderful, intimate and hot live gig in Kraków's Alchemia club. The singles she kept releasing strengthened my spirit and now we can all enjoy another EP from the Canadian.

Just as before, we can count here on the warm, tear-jerking vocals by Sauvé (one of the best female voices ever imho) and the dense, darkish dream pop atmosphere. On the other hand you can't say the song here are not melodic and catchy. Certainly the one that stand out is Never Let Me Go, a track that has a lot of hit potential, actually the same goes with Barcelona Boy. But there are also some creamy ballads that balance the album, like Call My Name, Lydian or Where Do Lovers Go?. I gid both versions of Ghostly Kisses.

It's great to add that the artist just announced her concert come back to Europe next year with three gigs in Poland.

Ghostly Kisses - Never Let Me Go (2020) PL

Margaux Sauvé, artystka która stoi za projektem Ghostly Kisses, skradła moje serce nie tylko EP-ką The City Holds My Heart w 2018 roku, ale też wspaniałym, intymnym i gorącym występem na żywo w krakowskiej Alchemii. Kolejne single, które wydawała podtrzymywały mnie na duchu, a teraz mogę cieszyć się razem z wami kolejną EP-ką Kanadyjki.

Tak jak poprzednio, można na niej liczyć na ciepły, wzruszający wokal Sauvé (jeden z najlepszych damskich wokali imho) i gęstą, nieco mroczną dreampopową atmosferę. Z drugiej strony nie można odmówić jej kawałkom melodyjności i wpadania w ucho. Z pewnością wyróżnia się tu Never Let Me Go, kawałek z potencjałem na spory hit, zresztą podobnie jak Barcelona Boy. Z drugiej strony balansują je kremowo eteryczne ballady Call My Name, Lydian czy Where Do Lovers Go?. Obie te wersje Ghostly Kisses do mnie przemawiają.

Świetnie się składa, że artystka zapowiedziała koncertowy powrót do Europy na przyszły rok, w tym do Polski, gdzie zagra w Krakowie, Gdańsku i Warszawie.

Ben Shemie - A Single Point of Light (2020) EN

Ben Shemie is the vocalist and guitars of the fantastic Suuns. But it turns out that he makes music also solo and this year released the second album under his own surname. So it's time to catch up and have a look at A Single Point of Light.

The album "focuses on the perception of light, both figuratively and literally (...), how we can all see the same thing but perceive it differently". Every fan of Suuns should instantly recognize the band's unique style in Shemie's works: similar electronic effects, minimalism of form that bring maximum artistic value, dark vibe. The album was "recorded in one day, all live off the floor, with no overdubs" which only makes the feeling of minimalism and lo-fi magic deeper. The examples here are numerous: based on the nervous beeping Ties That Bind, very much Suuns-like vibrating backgrounds in Change or the album's finish in the electronically massacred ballad The River.

Great idea was to interlace more traditional, if you could even call them that, songs with tracks that create electronic bridges between them. In this way the melodic compositions seem to be lost within this electronic hotchpotch so the listener has to dig for them which makes a really satisfying job.

Bem Shemie - A Single Point of Light (2020) PL

Ben Shemie to oczywiście wokalista i gitarzysta fantastycznych Suuns. Okazuje się jednak, że tworzy również solowo, a w tym roku wydał już drugą płytę pod swoim nazwiskiem. Czas więc nadrobić zaległości i przyjrzeć się A Single Point of Light.

Płyta "skupia się na odbiorze światła, zarówno dosłownie jak i w przenośni (...), w jaki sposób wszyscy widzimy tę samą rzecz lecz odbieramy ją inaczej". Każdy fan Suuns od razu rozpozna w pracach Shemiego niepowtarzalny styl zespołu, podobne elektroniczne efekty, minimalizm formy przynoszący maksymalne wrażenia artystyczne, mroczny vibe. Artysta płytę "nagrał jednego dnia, na żywo, bez żadnych dogrywek", co pogłębia wrażenie minimalizmu i lo-fi'owej magii. Przykłady można mnożyć: oparte na nerwowym pikaniu Ties That Bind, bardzo suunsowe wibrujące tło w Change, czy zamykająca album zmasakrowana elektroniką ballada The River.

Znakomity efekt daje przeplatanie bardziej tradycyjnych, jeśli można o tym w ogóle pisać, piosenek kawałkami tworzącymi między nimi elektroniczne pomosty. Daje to efekt zagubienia melodyjnych kompozycji wśród eksperymentalnego misz-maszu, przez co każdy musi się do nich dokopać, a jest to nadzwyczaj satysfakcjonujące zadanie.

n-Sō - Out of the Valley (2020) PL

Kolejne odkrycie dzięki wspaniałemu labelowi Moderna Records. n-Sō to pseudonim sceniczny Nicka Angeloniego (tego, który nie jest zawodnikiem MMA) z Pensylwanii. Jego twórczość poznać można na płycie Out of the Valley.

Mimo, że album zaczyna AFM, kawałek na wskroś klawiszowy, całość już zdecydowanie nie jest tak jednoznaczna. Bo opiera się na pogodzeniu współczesnej elektroniki i ambientu z neoklasyką. Znakomicie widać to w finale tytułowego Into the Valley, gdzie na górach elektronicznych dźwięków wyrasta klawiszowy las - jednocześnie wyraźny i znakomicie wkomponowany w całość. I nie ma znaczenia czy elektronika staje się bardziej agresywna, jak w Drums and Drama czy mniej dostrzegalna jak w Mountain Song - balans jest kluczem do tej bardzo udanej płyty.

n-Sō - Out of the Valley (2020) EN

Yet another discovery thanks to the great Moderna Records label. n-Sō is a moniker of Nick Angeloni (the one who's not an MMA person) of Pennsylvania. His music can be appreciated on his album called Out of the Valley.

Although it is opened by AFM, a track thoroughly keys-based, the whole album is definitely not so straight forward. It is based on the cooperation between the modern electronics and ambient with neoclassicism. It's well audible in the title track Into the Valley in the electronic sound's mountains of which, woods of synth keys grow - and they're both clearly heard as well as integrated into the whole thing. And it doesn't matter if the electronics are getting more aggressive as in Drums and Drama or not so clear as in Mountain Song - the balance is the key to this wonderful album.

A World Wondered Full - คุณจะเรียกหาใครในเมื่อตำรวจเป็นคนฆ่า และคุณจะร้องเพลงอะไรสำหรับบ้านที่ลุกไหม้สว่างโร่ (2020) EN

The Thai band A World Wondered Full released recently another impressive and touching album. It's worth looking into คุณจะเรียกหาใครในเมื่อตำรวจเป็นคนฆ่า และคุณจะร้องเพลงอะไรสำหรับบ้านที่ลุกไหม้สว่าโร่  not only for the music.

The album's title translates to "Who will you call when the police kill you? And what will you sing for the blazing house?" so it's not a difficult thing to guess that the album makes another musical commentary on the restlessness around the world (I just posted about one from Domani Vendetta), although the musicians mention that they write on the situation in Thailand, one I don't know much about truth be said. Anyway - the musical way to do so taken by the band is extremely piercing. 

Long tracks on the album are fused with samples of despair and aggression as well as with very gloomy sounds of strings. The first track makes a not very noisy acoustic post-rock, the second shows a lot of guitar noise while the third part even some... Near East's folk? An intriguing release, that's for sure.

Endless Forms to projekt Justina Allena, który opisuje go jako "OK dream pop". Poprzedni album opisywałem na blogu w 2017 roku, gdy projekt był jeszcze trio. Teraz Allen samemu wydaje nową płytę i trzeba przyznać, że nie stracił na tym za wiele.

More Than Candy to album stworzony w domowych warunkach, a jednak tylko czasami to słychać. Pomyślany z początku jako zestaw ambientowych tracków, ostatecznie stał się płytą bardziej slowcorowo-art popową i mniej eteryczną niż poprzednie. Z jednej strony nadzwyczaj ciekawe elektroniczne tła, czasem bardziej eteryczno-ambientowe, czasem delikatnie popowe. Z drugiej, tchnący akustycznym popem wokal balansujący pomiędzy dream popem a tagiem singer/songwriter (a także przypominający mi mojego ulubionego Paragraphs). Tylko że zamiast gitary akustycznej jest gitara elektryczna, a przede wszystkim gruba warstwa elektroniki. A do tego Giving Myself to the Glue to małe arcydzieło.

Endless Forms - More Than Candy (2020) EN

Endless Forms is a project led by Justin Allen who describes it as "OK dream pop". The previous album appeared on the blog back in 2017 when the project was still a trio. Now Allen on his own releases an album and it has to be said that he didn't lose much on it.

More Than Candy is an album made at home, yet it's audible only in some places. Designed at first as a collection of ambient tracks eventually developed into a more slowcore/art pop album but also less ethereal than the previous one. On one hand, extremely interesting electronic backgrounds, sometimes more airy-ambient, sometimes delicately pop-ish. On the other, the vocals sending the acoustic pop vibes balancing between dream pop and the singer/songwriter tag (and also reminding me of my favourite Paragraphs in some places). The difference being that instead of acoustic guitar we hear electronic guitar and, firstly, a deep layer of electronic sounds. Also, Giving Myself to the Glue makes a small masterpiece.

A World Wondered Full - คุณจะเรียกหาใครในเมื่อตำรวจเป็นคนฆ่า และคุณจะร้องเพลงอะไรสำหรับบ้านที่ลุกไหม้สว่างโร่ (2020) PL

Tajski zespół A World Wondered Full wydał właśnie kolejny efektowny i przejmujący album. Warto się nad คุณจะเรียกหาใครในเมื่อตำรวจเป็นคนฆ่า และคุณจะร้องเพลงอะไรสำหรับบ้านที่ลุกไหม้สว่าโร่  pochylić nie tylko ze względu na muzykę.

Tytuł płyty tłumaczy się na "Po kogo zadzwonisz, gdy policja będzie cię zabijać? I co zaśpiewasz płonącemu domowi? " więc nietrudno zgadnąć, że to kolejny muzyczny komentarz do niepokojów na całym świecie (dopiero co pisałem o płycie Domani Vendetta), z tym że muzycy piszą raczej o sytuacji w Tajlandii, o której, przyznam, nie wiem zupełnie nic. Tak czy inaczej - muzyczna droga obrana przez zespół jest niesamowicie przejmująca.

Długie kawałki na albumie przeplatane są samplami pełnymi rozpaczy i agresji oraz nadzwyczaj smętnie brzmiącymi smyczkami. Pierwszy kawałek to raczej niegłośny akustyczny post-rock, w drugim pojawia się już sporo gitarowego noise'u, a w części trzeciej nawet... bliskowschodniego folku. Intrygujące wydawnictwo, to na pewno.

Domani Vendetta - When Silence Means Violence (2020) PL

Co chwila w ostatnich miesiącach przypomina mi się, że Hiszpania również post-rockiem stoi. Po takich projektach jak Nabius czy Syberia, teraz zrobiła to formacja Domani Vendetta ze stołecznego Madrytu. A dokładnie ich nowa płyta When Silence Means Violence.

To właściwie nie post-rock a instrumentalny djent metal z tak charakterystyczną dla niego techniką grania na gitarach. Z drugiej strony jednak kompozycje tutaj są tak skomplikowane i interesująco napisane, że trudno nie nazywać tej muzyki post-rockiem. Słuchacz dostaje łupnia w uszy już od samego początku w Kaiko, która chociaż piorunująco się zaczyna to daje radę rozkręcać się do samego końca. I w zasadzie cała płyta tak wygląda - wciągające kompozycje na djentowe dźwięki, najlepsze w Kaiko, Vartice i finałowe Trees.

No i nie trzeba chyba dodawać, że cała płyta to komentarz do sytuacji w Stanach. Zespół bardzo mocno popiera protesty i walkę o równouprawnienie za co tylko zyskują kolejny plus.

Domani Vendetta - When Silence Means Violence (2020) EN

Frequently in the last months I am being reminded that Spain has also a strong post-rockish scene. After projects such as Nabius or Syberia, now it's done by Domani Vendetta, a band from the capital city of Madrid. And to be more precise, by their new album When Silence Means Violence.

Actually it's not exactly post-rock and more instrumental djent metal with this so characteristic way of playing guitars. On the other hand, the compositions here are so complex and intriguing that it's hard not to call it post-rock. Anyway, the audience get their ears massacred by the very first sounds of Kaiko that, although it starts with a bang, manages to develop even more with time. And indeed, the whole album looks like this - engaging compositions with djent sounds, best in Kaiko, Vartice and the final track Trees.

And it goes without saying that the album makes a commentary on the current situation in US and other places. The band is fully supportive towards the protests and fight for equality which makes me like them even more.

Ecke Wu - 表演Performance (2020) PL

Ecke Wu (na Spotify jako 吳雪穎) to projekt z Szanghaju, o którym bardzo mało wiadomo. Ta aura tajemniczości tylko ubarwia ich muzykę, chociaż ta sama w sobie także się broni. Zwłaszcza na wydanej niedawno drugiej płycie zatytułowanej 表演Performance.

Otwierają ją powolne melodie i słodki głos wokalistki w Spring - Impression. Na uwagę zasługuje to jak gęsta i oniryczna jest atmosfera wygenerowana gitarami i łagodną elektroniką. Chce się przy niej marzyć i odpływać myślami w nieznane, a więc clue dream popu osiągnięte zostało ponad wszelką wątpliwość. Innymi cisnącymi się na usta epitetami w stosunku do muzyki Chińczyków byłyby bujająca, spokojna, mellow. Ale to do czasu bo zespół pokazuje też trochę shoegaze'owego gitarowego noise'u, po raz pierwszy chyba we Flyer. 

To, co jeszcze wyróżnia Ecke Wu to oczywiście język. W momencie, gdy wokalistka przechodzi z angielskiego na chiński, w powietrzu robi się jeszcze bardziej intrygująco i klimatycznie. Nic tak nie pomaga jak tajemniczy, egzotyczny język. Album szczyt eterycznej delikatności osiąga w The End, ale to wcale nie koniec emocji, bo krążek zamyka dopiero najgłośniejsza, najostrzejsza, prawie blackgaze'owa niespodzianka w One. I chciałbym usłyszeć ich w takiej formie na dłuższym dystansie.

Ecke Wu - 表演Performance (2020) EN

Ecke Wu (figuring on Spotify as 吳雪穎) is a project from Shanghai, one about which a little is known. These mysterious vibes only make the music more interesting, although the music itself is worth checking anyway. Especially on the recent album called 表演Performance.

It is opened by slow melodies and sweet vocals in Spring - Impression. It's worth looking into how dense and oneiric the atmosphere generated by guitars and non-offensive electronics is. It makes you feel the urge to dream and flow away in your thoughts. So the dream pop's clue is undoubtedly checked. Another adjectives here that must be pronounced are mellow, peaceful, swinging. But all of this to certain moments as the band are also able to show some of shoegazing guitar noise, I think i Flyer for the first time. 

Something that makes Ecke Wu stand out is also, of course, the language. In the moment when the vocalist turns from English to Chinese, the air around gets even more intriguing and atmospheric. Nothing helps as much as a mysterious and exotic language. The album gets to the dreamy heights in The End, but this is not the end of emotions as it's finished in the loudest, sharpest, almost blackgaze surprise in One. And I think I'd like to hear the band in this form on a longer distance.

Battlestations - Inform (2020) EN

The Belgian Battlestations for me is one of the more mysterious and less appreciated projects of the European post-rock-slash-ambient map. And after the very well-done album Vixit it's time for their forth one called Inform.

The project's music is based on strings and keys but another important element are those more pugnacious moments that transform the whole thing into heavily industrial music that reminds me of those abandoned factories of the Western Europe. This atmosphere is present all over the album - if not occupying the foreground, than lurking in the nervous backgrounds like in Steeper Angles or another key-ambient masterpiece, L'abîme. Although this is definitely not so subtle music, the words quoted on their page say a lot about the project's nature: "If you listen for long enough, you don't know whether what you're hearing is silence, or whether there's some kind of underlying sound, in the distance..."

Battlestations - Inform (2020) PL

Belgijskie Battlestations to jak dla mnie jeden z bardziej tajemniczych i niedocenianych projektów na mapie europejskiego post-rocka przechodzącego w ambient. A tymczasem po bardzo udanej płycie Vixit nadszedł czas na czwarty już krążek zatytułowany Inform.

Muzyka projektu oparta jest w dużym stopniu na smyczkach i klawiszach, ale nie można zapomnieć o bardziej charakternych momentach zamieniających całość w mocno industrialne granie przywodzące na myśl opuszczone fabryki Europy Zachodniej. Ta atmosfera obecna jest w zasadzie w każdej chwili trwania albumu - jeśli nie na pierwszym planie to w niepokojących tłach jak w Steeper Angles czy innym ambientowo-klawiszowym arcydziełku, L'abîme. Co prawda nie jest to aż tak subtelna muzyka, ale słowa cytowane na oficjalnej stronie dużo mówią o naturze projektu: "Jeśli słuchasz wystarczająco długo, zaczynasz mieć wątpliwości czy słyszysz ciszę czy jakiś ukryty dźwięk gdzieś w oddali..."

Inform kosztuje 32 złote (7 EUR).

Of the Vine - Left Alone (2020) EN

"The prettiest doom metal band you've ever heard", that's how the Americans of Georgia making up Of the Vine are described. Their third album called Left Alone clearly shows why it's definitely true.

Although the compositions here can't be described other than long post-metal epics, they are built in such a way that they have to be called attractive if not sexy. Using not my words: they constitute "a blend of stylistic approaches that comes together into something breathtaking that can crush listeners and then lift them up in a single moment". Agreed. They are so well written, surprising, not shy to address complex ideas and doing so in a virtuosity-full way.

So don't be surprised when Left Alone alone will offer peaceful, instrumental ambient with airy vocals just next to monumental guitar soundscapes. Actually, the vocals themselves deserve a huge plus all together, they are situated somewhere between Ryan Osterman of Holy Fawn and Jakob Berglund of A Swarm of the Sun. This completes such fantastic tracks as the ever-changing I'm Morrisey, I'm Dead, chaotically loud Forelorn or final Ilfracombe. One of my favourite albums of the year already now.

Of the Vine - Left Alone (2020) PL

"Najpiękniejszy doom metal jaki kiedykolwiek słyszałeś", tak opisywani są Amerykanie z Georgii tworzący zespół Of the Vine. Ich trzecia płyta Left Alone dosadnie pokazuje dlaczego jest to święta racja.

Mimo, że kompozycje na niej to długie post-metalowe epopeje, skonstruowane są one w taki sposób, że trzeba je określić jako nadzwyczaj atrakcyjne, jeśli nie seksowne. Nie moimi słowy: tworzą one "mieszankę stylistycznych podejść które razem tworzą coś zapierającego dech w piersiach, co potrafi zmiażdżyć słuchacza i go podnieść w tym samym momencie". Pełna zgoda. Są one znakomicie napisane, zaskakujące, wprowadzające skomplikowane rozwiązania i robiące to w sposób pełen wirtuozerii.

Dlatego nie dziwcie się, gdy samo Left Alone oferuje spokojne, instrumentalne ambienty z eterycznym wokalem tuż obok monumentalnych, gitarowych pejzaży. W ogóle to wokal sam w sobie zasługuje na wielki plus plasując się gdzieś między Ryanem Ostermanem z Holy Fawn a Jakobem Berglundem z A Swarm of the Sun. To tylko ubarwia takie fantastyczne kawałki jak zmienne I'm Morrisey, I'm Dead, chaotycznie głośne Forelorn czy finałowe Ilfracombe. Jeden z moich ulubionych krążków tego roku już teraz.

The Know - wearetheknow (2020) EN

Daniel Knowles and Jennifer Farmer from California are a married couple who also make up a music duo called The Know. The mutual love here is combined with the love to Beach House, Julee Cruise or The Jesus and Mary Chain which obviously leads to a good quality of dream pop. You can listen to it on wearetheknow.

Released by Shore Dive Records, the EP is the album's first longer material after some singles shown over the last two years. Someday Maybe is the album's highlight with the full control over the thick carpet of oneiric noise skillfully married with delicately catchy vocals by Farmer. It's a great example of this lynchian pop that is able to be mercilessly atmospheric as well as quite well catching the ear. It's really, really good for a debut, but this is a tricky statement as both artists have already some meaningful experience, Knowles was a member of Amusement Parks on Fire while together they also played in a band called Ghostel. Now they debut yet again and they do so with such a class. Definitely a project to look at.]
