Jon Wolper from Washington is hidden behind a project with a fantastic name. Get ready for tons of atmosphere mixed with mystical ambient.

The album in snot long but there is a lot to it. "Fanfare" is dense ambient with unsettling message. Field recordings enrich this track with quite an apocalyptic dimension, the keys at the end sound more like gloomy church bells then something that is supposed to ease the mood.

In "Normalize" there is less going on but it's not a disadvantage at all. In the middle of the track the dark and minimal ambient is brighten up by a synthesizer wave that gives the beginning to "The World to Come". And this is even more gloomy with its whipping keys and mysterious ending. Your life will be a bit sadder after listening to this music.

Jon Wolper z Waszyngtonu kryje się za projektem o fantastycznej nazwie. Przygotujcie się na tonę klimatu łamaną przez mistyczny ambient.

Płyta nie jest długa ale można powiedzieć, że treściwa. "Fanfare" to gęsty ambient z niepokojącą wymową. Field recordings wzbogacają ten kawałek o niemało apokaliptyczny wymiar, klawisze pod koniec brzmią bardziej jak posępne dzwony kościelne niż coś mającego łagodzić nastrój.

W "Normalize" dzieje się dużo mniej ale nie jest to w żadnym wypadku wada. W połowie utworu mroczny i minimalistyczny ambient rozświetla syntezatorowa fala, która sama umiera dając początek "The World to Come". A ten jest jeszcze bardziej ponury ze swoimi pochlipującymi klawiszami i zagadkowym końcem. Wasze życie po tej płycie będzie odrobinę smutniejsze.

Drifting Anchors - Decadence (2017) EN

Angry and raging like three hundred knives project by Norwegian artist Stig Erklev. It's around for two years now but I encountered it just now. And I'm in awe. It's difficult to find a kind of music that fits better some particular states of mind.

I've been listening to "Mediocre at Best" for some weeks now because besides this great energy the Norwegian releases, his compositions have also this difficult to describe melodic and, what is even more important to me, nostalgic nature. For me, Erklev's anger is more this kind of anger that is expressed through tears, the one that is a result of depression, sadness as the last stand of sanity. But maybe it's just me.

The album is well balanced. Apart for "Mediocre..." the other tracks that deserve our attention are an ultra fast "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" and surprisingly delicate interlude in "Swallow".

Drifting Anchors - Decadence (2015) PL

Wściekły i zadziorny jak trzysta noży projekt norweskiego artysty Stiga Erkleva. Ma już co prawda dwa lata ale natrafiłem na niego dopiero teraz i jestem urzeczony. Ciężko znaleźć lepszą muzykę dla niektórych stanów umysłu.

Sam zasłuchuję się od kilku tygodni w "Mediocre at Best" bo oprócz niesamowitej energii wyzwalanej przez Norwega, jego kompozycje mają w sobie także trudną do opisania melodyjność oraz, co nie mniej ważne, melancholię. Dla mnie złość Erkleva to bardziej złość przez łzy, taka, która wynika z depresji, ze smutku, niczym ostatni bastion zdrowia. Ale może to tylko ja.

Płyta jest równa. Poza "Mediocre..." na uwagę zaskakują ultra szybki "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" i zaskakująco łagodny muzyczny przerywnik - "Swallow".

Shadow Universe - The Unspeakable World (2017) EN

Guitar post-rock from the Slovenian Shadow Universe seduces with epicness and well thought through compositions. Besides raw guitar sounds, the musicians show also a whole spectre of ways to create diverse and catchy instrumental music.

The band describe their music as one fitting perfectly for soundtracks. The amount of epicness suggests that it'd be a perfect choice for a good space opera, which is actually reflected in the tracks' titles. Especially spectacular is the second part of "Pulsaru", where indeed pulsating keys meet extremely raw effects and loud guitars. Similarly, "Free Dimension" and "Resident of Forgotten Galaxy" are something to pay attention to.

Tha album ends with two tracks connected by unsettling, folkish/space sounds that create one big farewell to life and hope. Perfect ending for a very good album.

Shadow Universe - The Unspeakable World (2017) PL

Gitarowy post-rock od Słoweńców z Shadow Universe uwodzi rozmachem i przemyślaną kompozycję. Oprócz surowych gitar, muzycy prezentują całą gamę sposobów na urozmaiconą i wciągającą muzykę instrumentalną.

Zespół opisuje swoją twórzczość jako muzykę do ścieżek dźwiękowych z filmów. Pod względem epickości nadawałaby się zwłaszcza do dobrej space opery, co zresztą odzwierciedlone jest w tytułach utworów. Niezwykle efektownie prezentuje się druga część "Pulsaru", gdzie pulsujące właśnie klawisze spotykają się z niezwykle chropowatymi efektami i głośnymi gitarami. Podobnie "Free Dimension" czy "Resident of Forgotten Galaxy" przykuwa ucho słuchacza.

Płyta kończy się dwoma utworami połączonymi niepokojącymi, folkowo kosmicznymi dźwiękami, które tworzą jedno wielkie pożegnanie z życiem i nadzieją. Doskonałe zakończenie bardzo dobrej płyty.

Imperfect Tree - Roots EP (2017) EN

If you are in search for music that seduces with its nostalgic mood and at the same time forces you to frolic, you couldn't find a better option. The Mexicans from Imperfect Tree show us how to create sublime tracks that are at the same time far from being boring.

The opening "Rhizome" sounds already super exciting with a wonderful melody put on high paced guitars. Similarly in "Roots" where the lyrics are replaced by a moody murmuring which is no obstacle to find it worth experiencing. The lyrical degradation goes further as "Overflow" is lyrics free and Imperfect Tree's music turns into stifling post-rock only to get reborn as rock/grungy and turns back to almost dreampopish "Departure".

Perhaps the tree is not perfect but the music by the Mexicans is almost there.
