O liverpoolskim A Burial at Sea miałem okazję postować już w momencie ich debiutu EP-ką ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts dwa lata temu. Potem był jeszcze gig na Bergmal Festival zeszłą jesienią, a teraz mogę w końcu powiedzieć, że wyjątkowy post-rock zespołu doczekał się wydania długogrającego na A Burial at Sea.

Niewiele zespołów post-rockowych decyduje się na użycie w swoim line-upie instrumentów dętych, na myśl przychodzą mi jeszcze norwescy szaleńcy z genialnego Spurv. Tymczasem dla Anglików jest to w zasadzie podstawa twórczości, na swoim profilu sami swoją muzykę nazywają "trąbkowym rockiem". To oczywiście uproszczenie, bo jest w niej dużo, dużo więcej, ale fakt jest faktem. W muzyce zespołu dźwięki trąbki dodają jeszcze więcej szaleństwa do już i tak math-rockowo chaotycznego post-rocka, w którym nastroje, tempa i melodie zmieniają się co i rusz.

Natomiast muzycy dają sobie spokojnie radę również, gdy trzeba zakończyć kawałek w bardzo post-rockowy, monumentalny i głośny sposób (Lest We Remember) czy gdy chcą połączyć pełną napięcia gitarową kompozycję z chóralnym wokalem o tęsknocie za domem (Lightning Blanket). A dźwięki trąbki zawsze temu towarzyszom i zawsze dodają kolorytu.

I posted about the Liverpool-based A Burial at Sea when they showed their debut EP ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts two years ago. Then there was a gig at the Bergmal Festival last autumn and now I can safely say that the band's unique post-rock has finally an LP form on A Burial at Sea.

There's only a few post-rock bands that use the trumpet's sounds in their music, actually, I can think only of the Norwegian crazy guys of the brilliant Spurv. That being said, for the English band this is essentially the basis of their work, they even call their music "trumpet rock" on their FB account. Of course, this is understatement, there's so much more in it, but a fact is a fact. In the band's music the trumpet sounds add on to the madness of the already math-rock-like chaotic post-rock in which the moods, paces and melodies change every second.

But the artists feel good also when it's the time to finish a song in a very post-rock, monumental and loud way (Lest We Remember) or when they want to combine a very tension-filled guitar composition with some chanting about home sickness (Lightning Blanket). And the sounds of the trumpet are always there and always add to the colourfullness of the music.

The English A Burial At Sea consists of five musicians deeply into heavy sounds from bands like And So I Watch You From Afar, Explosions in the Sky or Clever Girl. No wonder on their new EP, they show how loud, guitar music should look.

And it's not exactly what we picture when we think about post-rock. Firstly, since the very beginning we are attacked by rough guitar riffs sounding more like some psychedelic works by, let's say, Thee Oh Seas. The track that opens the album, "A Song for John Willing", does eventually get heavier with sounds that aim to smash the audience as is true for the next song "Scrios an Caine" ending with an extremely chaotic noise finish. If you have not enough of psychedelia, you can always drown into the torrent of trumpets in the final "Lest We Remember".

One more curious thing is the cover art that somewhat parodies the post-rock bands' favourite way of geometrically deforming beautiful landscapes pictures by adapting it to the industrial atmosphere of their city - Liverpool.

Angielskie A Burial At Sea to piątka muzyków zasłuchanych w ciężkie brzmienia zespołów takich jak And So I Watch You From Afar, Explosions in the Sky czy Clever Girl. Nic dziwnego, że na swojej EP-ce pokazują jak według nich powinno wyglądać głośne, gitarowe granie.

A jest ono nie do końca takie, jakie na ogół kojarzy się z post-rockiem. Przede wszystkim od samego początku atakowani jesteśmy zadziornymi gitarowymi riffami przypominającymi raczej psychodeliczne dokonania zespołów pokroju Thee Oh Seas. Dopiero z czasem otwierający płytkę "A Song for John Willing" wprowadza cięższe brzmienia mające na celu przygnieść słuchaczy. Podobnie jest z kolejnym utworem, zakończonym chaotycznym hałasem "Scrios an Caine". Jeśli komuś mało psychodelii, niech tylko zasłucha się w sekcji dętej towarzyszącej zamykającemu płytę "Lest We Remember".

Bardzo ciekawy jest też cover art, który trochę parodiuje ulubioną przez post-rockowe zespoły kompozycję z geometrycznie zdeformowanym krajobrazem przez wpisanie jej w industrialne klimaty ich rodzinnego Liverpoolu.
