Drain Blossoms - Tales from the Ixian Tomb (2020) EN

Virginia-based artist making their music under the moniker of Drain Blossoms released last month their first and second albums. I found Tales from the Ixian Tomb first and I'm in awe.

The album is commented on with the not-perfect quote from Tyler Ragar's poem: "In the middle of the winter, in the middle of the night, these two dead boys got up to fight". If there's not enough of this dark but also irrational atmosphere, the artist's website also quotes Dante. And it's somehow reflected on the album - on one hand there's a lot of dark neoclassicism, especially when it comes to the thick strings, on the other - a solid quantity of electronic effects weirding it up (The Conduit) and some other ways of expression like choral chanting in the great An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal or very dream pop-like vocals in Phil.

It has to be said that the artist managed to create a diverse album that at the same time seems to be kept in coherent atmosphere. A bit like Burton, a bit like early Irrepressibles - neoclassicism and electronics together serving the dark, gothic but also somewhat ridiculous compositions. Delicious. Now let's check the second album called The Halfway Child.

Artysta z Wirginii podpisujący swoją muzykę jako Drain Blossoms wydał w zeszłym miesiącu swój pierwszy i drugi album. Ja natrafiłem najpierw na Tales from the Ixian Tomb i jestem zachwycony.

Płyta podpisana jest niedokładnym cytatem z wiersza Tylera Ragera "Pośród zimy, pośród nocy, dwóch martwych chłopców powstało by walczyć". Jeśli tej mrocznej ale też irracjonalnej atmosfery było mało, strona artysty przytacza też cytaty z Dantego. Trochę podobnie jest z muzyką na płycie - z jednej strony sporo mrocznej neoklasyki, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zawiesiste smyczki, z drugiej - udziwniające ją elektroniczne efekty (The Conduit) oraz takie zagrania jak chóralne zaśpiewy w znakomitym An Accurate Portrayal of a Solemn Betrayal czy te całkiem dream popujące w Phil.

Trzeba przyznać, że artyście udało się stworzyć album bardzo zróżnicowany, a jednocześnie wydający się być utrzymany w spójnym klimacie. Trochę jak Burton, trochę jak wczesne Irrepressibles - neoklasyka i elektronika razem w służbie mrocznych, gotyckich ale też trochę karykaturalnych kompozycji. Pyszne. A teraz trzeba sprawdzić drugą płytę The Halfway Child.

Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) PL

Jedna z dziwaczniejszych rzeczy na moim blogu, Skippy Spiral to "a music clown & entertainer" z Savannah, a jego ostatni album, Circuit Circus, to prawdziwie punkowo-psychodeliczna mieszanka z akordeonem i cyrkiem na pierwszym planie.

Fascynacja cyrkiem do tej pory kojarzyła mi się bardziej z klimatycznymi i mrocznymi balladami The Irrepressibles, tymczasem Amerykanin to bardziej lo-fi'owa psychodeliczna jazda bez trzymanki. W opisie albumu na stronie wydawcy, przeczytać można, że w muzyce artysty "akordeon, keyboard i wokal charakterystyczny dla cyrkowego nawoływacza są akompaniowane muzyką przenikniętą..." i tu następuje prawdziwa litania gatunków muzycznych z punkiem, industrialem czy muzyką klezmerską. Żeby było jeszcze ciekawiej, Circuit Circus to concept album opowiadającym farsę/przypowieść o ludzkości uploadowanej do wirtualnej rzeczywistości.

Płyta składa się z wielu po punkowemu szybkich kawałków w bardzo lo-fi'owej estetyce. Kilka, jak Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry czy Clownbot 3000 natychmiast zapadają w pamięć. Ten album to na pewno ciekawostka, ala taka, której muzyczna warstwa też się broni.

Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) EN

This is one of the most peculiar things on my blog ever, Skippy Spiral is "a music clown & entertainer" from Savannah, and his newest album, Circuit Circus, makes a really punk-psychedelic mixture with accordion and circus on the foreground.

The fascination with circus up to this point in my mind was mostly about atmospheric and dark ballads by The Irrepressibles, that said, the American makes more like a lo-fi psychedelic joy ride. In the description featured on the label's Badcamp, you can read that in the artist's music "accordion/keyboard & carny barker style vocals is accompanied by original music that infuses..." and then there goes an impressive list of music genres with for example punk, industrial or klezmer. To make everything even more interesting, Circuit Circus is a concept album telling a farce/parable about the humankind uploaded to artificial reality.

The album consists of the lot of punkishly fast songs in a borderline lo-fi style. Some, such as Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry or Clownbot 3000 instantly make their way to the listener's mind. This album is definitely a fun fact, but also one the musical layer of which is worth checking out too.

Dolls Come To Life - Neptune Dogs (2017) EN

Dolls Come To Life is an artistically non-copiable duet consisting of singer/songwriter Michelle Cross and experimental musician Joe Frawley. This exciting mix combines piano music a'la Tori Amos, and sometimes even dark cabaret-like, with ambient and sometimes even alternative-disco electronics.

And both of the extremes gives to the project their best features. Take "Abduction" - both deep and airy voice of Cross with melodic xylophone like keys and sci-fi clips found in some NASA transmissions. The atmosphere that could hardly be copied, mostly because nobody'd think of such a combination. This cosmic kind of poetry here is quite common, as in "Pale Blue Dot" that makes a fantastic description of the planet Earth.

The whole album is full of surprises. It is indicated already by its title - "Neptune Dogs", suggesting both a sci-fi atmosphere of the electronic music and something surreal, uncanny, impossible. and if there's someone who is still not convinced, taking a look at the cover art and the space goat should do the trick.

Dolls Come To Life - Neptune Dogs (2017) PL

Dolls Come To Life to artystycznie niepowtarzalny duet wokalistki i songwriterki Michelle Cross i eksperymentalnego muzyka Joe'a Frawleya. Ten wybuchowy miks łączy klawiszową muzykę spod znaku Tori Amos, a czasem nawet mrocznego kabaretu, z ambientowymi, a czasem wręcz elektryką z alternatywnej dyskoteki. 

I oba te bieguny oferują to, co w mają w sobie najlepsze. Weźmy na przykład "Abduction" - jednocześnie głęboki i eteryczny głos Cross, wygrywające melodię dzwonki i kosmiczne wstawki znalezione gdzieś w transmisjach radiowych NASA. Klimat ciężki do podrobienia, głównie dlatego, że mało kto wpadłby na takie połączenia. Kosmicznej poezji jest zdecydowanie więcej, np. "Pale Blue Dot" to fantastyczny opis Ziemi. 

Cała płyta zresztą tym zadziwia. Zdradza to zresztą jej tytuł - "Psy z Neptuna". Sugeruje jednocześnie sci-fi'owy klimat muzycznej elektroniki i coś surrealistycznego, niezwykłego, niemożliwego. A jeśli komuś mało, jedno spojrzenie na kosmiczną kozę i gramofon na okładce powinien mieć ostateczne słowo.

"Neptune Dogs" można mieć za płać ile chcesz.

Les Cygnes Noirs - UN (2017) EN

Les Cygnes Noirs, black swans, suits ŁŚ perfectly but not only because of the name. The band is magnificent in combining very different genres and in the end plays a post-rocking cabaret. Sounds as if Regina Spektor got very scared and started to listen to 65daysofstatic and play their covers. Plus lyrics I don’t understand as me and French treat each other with a dose of suspicion but it is clearly an important part of the compositions. I am not sure but it’s an academic guess.

The songs are played on heavy sounding piano and rhythmical drums which is the factor that changes perspective. A “normal” project with a lady behind a piano turns into something more, something deeper. And the lady mentioned has a low, poignant voice the sound of which suggests that the things sung are important and uncanny.

The album opens with a long “Dans tes pas” that is less cabaret and more post-rock track that is completely by chance played on piano keys. They are worth close listening to. Polish listeners can find “Le tren” interesting as its fragments sound like “Lewiwa” by Patrick the Pan but it also end abruptly as if the vocalist was chased by some musical demons. All the tunes by the French duo  are pleasant to your ears. My attention was drawn to “Léo” - everyone that hears it will know why and “Pour toi” transforming into something between dark cabaret and military song. Not to mention the last track that is a typical post-rock song with a record of a monologue in a background. Like the whole album - amazes with ambiguity.

Les Cygnes Noirs - UN (2017) PL

Les Cygnes Noirs, czarne łabędzie, pasują jak ulał do ŁŚ nie tylko ze względu na nazwę. Zespół we wspaniały sposób łączy bardzo różne gatunki i w sumie gra post-rockowy kabaret. Brzmi jak Regina Spektor, która najadła się strachu i zaczęła słuchać 65daysofstatic i grać ich covery A do tego teksty, których nie rozumiem bo francuski traktuję z nieufnością ale z pewnością są ważnym elementem kompozycji. Nie wiem ale to akademicki strzał.

Utwory zagrane są na ciężko brzmiące pianino i rytmiczną perkusję i to chyba ona zmienia perspektywę. Z "normalnego" projektu z panią siedzącą za pianinem zmienia się w coś więcej, coś głębiej. A do tego rzeczona pani ma niski, przejmujący głos, który samą barwą sugeruje, że śpiewane są słowa ważne i niebanalne.

Płytę otwiera długi "Dans Tes Pas" będący mniej kabaretowym, a bardziej post-rockowym kawałkiem, który przypadkiem jedynie zagrany został na pianinie. Warto wsłuchać się w te klawisze. Polscy słuchacze zainteresować się mogą "Le Tren", którego fragmenty brzmią jak szybka wersja "Lewiwy" Patrick the Pan, a który kończy się gwałtownie i szybko jakby w wokalistkę wstąpiły nagle muzyczne demony. Ucho wyłapuje z przyjemnością kolejne nuty grane przez francuski duet. Uwagę przykuwa "Léo" - każdy, kto ją usłyszy, będzie wiedział dlaczego oraz "Pour Toi" zamieniejące się stopniowo w coś pomiędzy czarnym kabaretem a pieśnią wojskową i z powrotem. Nie mówiąc już o ostatnim utworze, który jest typowym post-rockowym trackiem wykorzystującym nagrany monolog. Jak cała płyta - zachwyca wieloznacznością.
