Whettman Chelmets - Eli Chen (2021)

Whettman Chelmets is an ambient/drone artist out of Missouri whose January's album, called Eli Chen brought as not only a good dose of dreamy soundscapes but also some more sophisticated thought behind it.

The album is another proof of the artist's interest in "the concept of Jungian archetypes" in the form of the, as far as I can say, example person called Eli Chen who works as a "solitary individual brought through a specific mythological gnostic travel through the archons and spaces above to bring themselves (and us) through the fullness of it all". This philosophical idea is brought by a range of drony soundscapes that combine the ambient's delicate electronica with post-rock's subtle guitar noises. And does it with such a grace, it is an honour to get half-asleep while listening to the whole thing.

Also, the musician created the album "in-between his daughter napping" which is a definite proof on its dreamy and oneiric properties.

Wakings - The Abyss (2019) EN

Wakings is a solo project by Ian Barczewski (very Polish-sounding surname), musician from St. Louis, Missouri. The music on his new album The Abyss makes a legit, juicy piece of guitar post-rock with heavy message.

"This album is dedicated to those who have lost someone and have had to explore the loss in the deepest recesses of depression and anxiety in order to find acceptance". Heavy message and the music is also heavy. Wakings is a project from the series of "solo works that sound as if it was several guys with beards on stage". From the very beginning the album attacks with aggressive guitar sounds. The hit is exceptionally heavy in Silenced Grounds where the ambient intro is followed by surprising and violent guitars. It's also tangible in Field Studies and it seems that those rapid changes of pace together with deafening guitars are the American's music's strength.

Projekt Wakings to solowy twór Iana Barczewskiego (swojskie bardzo nazwisko), muzyka z St. Louis w Missouri. Muzyka na jego nowym albumie The Abyss to z kolei pełnoprawny, soczysty kawałek gitarowego post-rocka z ciężkim przesłaniem.

"Ten album dedykowany jest wszystkim tym, którzy kogoś stracili i musieli stawić czoła utracie w najgłębszych otchłaniach depresji i stanów lękowych aby odnaleźć akceptację". Mocna wiadomość, a bo i muzyka jest mocna. Wakings to projekt z serii "niby solowy, a brzmi jak kilka brodatych gości na scenie". Od samego początku album atakuje agresywnymi gitarami. Uderzenie to odczuwa się wyjątkowo dotkliwie w Silenced Grounds, w którym po chwili ambientowej przygrywki słuchacza zaskakują gwałtowne i nieprzewidywalne gitary. Podobnie jest zresztą w Field Studies i wydaje się, ze właśnie te nagłe zmiany tempa połączone z ogłuszającymi gitarami są siłą muzyki Amerykanina.

Destination Space Station - Hadean (2017) EN

Missouri-based band went for a hunt for new metaphors and to do so, reached the Lem-Asimov-like future and now, released an album combining dreampop and sci-fi. Sci-pop. Even its cover looks like an illustration for classic releases of Lem's prose.

The lyrics adapt concepts from sci-fi literature and mould them into universal metaphors. The first song describes terraforming, converting the surface of other planets so it can serve humans. But it is also about changing situations you end up in, into something "you can stand" on. The second one is a reference to Thera, the antic island with a civilization destroyed by the eruption of a volcano. But the very next one is a come back into the future with restarting a program and radiant lies.

The lyrics are not accompanied by space-like electronic music but very moody and warm dreampop. As if terraforming and space stations were already a part of our reality demanding including into pop music. So... it's a real dreampop from several decades into the future.

Zespół z Missouri, który w poszukiwaniu nowych metafor wybrał się w lemowo-asimovą przyszłość i wydał właśnie płytę łączącą dreampop i sci-fi. Sci-pop. Nawet okładka płyty wygląda jak ilustracja do klasycznych starych wydań Lema.

Teksty znakomicie adaptują koncepcje z literatury fantastycznej i lepią z nich uniwersalne metafory. Pierwszy utwór opowiada o terraformowaniu, przystosowywaniu powierzchni obcych planet dla ludzi. A także o zmienianiu zastanych sytuacji, tak by można było "na nich stać". Drugi to nawiązanie do Thery, antycznej wyspy z cywilizacją zniszczoną przez wulkan ale już kolejna to powrót w kosmos - o restartowaniu programu i promiennych kłamstwach.

Wszystko to wcale nie jest obudowane kosmiczna elektroniką a bardzo nastrojowym i ciepłym dreampopem. Tak jakby terraforming i kosmiczne podróże były po prostu częścią rzeczywistości. A więc prawdziwy dreampop za kilka dekad.
