Damián Antón Ojeda and Victoria Carmilla Hazemaze, or as they are better known sadness and oculi melancholarium, joined forces to release a fantastic split album earlier this year. springgarden feels like a perfect soundtrack for greeting the intoxicating season that is upon us.

The two artist who feel extremely comfortable at creating the lo-fi, bedroom blackgaze with a lot of influences from everywhere. The first two tracks are provided by Ojeda and they are surprisingly lively and energetic. The fast-paced compositions do have the signature haze and noisy bits (quite long one in fact), but the main thing one focuses on is the signature, dispersed but definitely not subtle vocals and the pace. In especially love the free approach to the structure of the tracks with long drone'y passages that divide the instances of the noisy shoegaze madness. The part delivered by Hazemaze is what we would call a true blackgaze: angry metal vocalizations and oneiric, subtle vocals on top of guitar-based but also very synthy and extremely flow-reach music is what the genre is about.

wøunds - No Beauty in the World (2022)

Igor Imbu from Chicago is better known as wøunds, and under this moniker, he released already several albums (it's difficult to follow as the numbers vary from source to source) with the newest being Past Inside the Present's No Beauty in the World.

It's probably the kind of ambient I like the most. What at first seems to be a slow and motionless ambient soundscape, soon can be recognized as bursting with life - those small electronic buzzings, the barely audible piano keys, the noise parts that are nothing more than fresh blows of breeze. It does sometimes get a bit louder, there are some hints of synth massiveness, but the compositions never really cross the line of the airy ambient.

Cool Heat - Levitate (2021)

Cool Heat is Eden Sierotnik from Chicago, member of a dream pop band Color Card and an artist who  creates very dreamy but also lively sounds. This year's Levitate is his second solo EP )as far as I found out) and it's a lot of airy fun. 

The release is filled with fun and creative indie pop with a big dose of tropical-like, carefree tones (the cover art picture is no coincidence here, that's for sure). The electronica in the backgrounds sets a fast pace of the songs while the overall dreamy ambiance makes it relaxing and easy to listen to. You can feel the sun through this music as if it was on your face and everything problematic in your life seems to lose importance. Sierotnik's voice is another thing, it is so airy and oneiric, no matter how fast the pace, the music is bound to be soothing and ethereal. I especially like Drift, a song with the most outstanding electronic "riff", one that stays in your mind for a while after the song ends.

Innesti - Filament and Place (2021)

Innesti, the Illinois-based ambient artist creates some particular kind of extremely ethereal  soundscapes. The almost an hour of which is included on the new album entitled Filament and Place, is filled with field recordings that make it depict the reality around us so well.

This is that kind of music that forces you to get quieter facing the dreamy wave of peaceful music, as the artist describes it, "ethereal, minimal ambient soundscapes created with field recordings, organic synthesis, fading light, and experiments in dreaming". This oneiric feel of the whole album, the way of stretching the compositions to make it sleepy-like while filling them with extremely airy sounds everywhere, makes it the dreamiest ambient I've heard recently. 

Porya Hatami and Valotihkuu, ambient artists I respect a lot, were also involved in creating this album and it only makes me like it more.

The Nancy Downs - The Nancy Downs (2020) EN

The Nancy Downs makes a rather mysterious project from Illinois, one you can find almost nothing about, also because its name refers to a popular movie The Craft. But mysterious here is also the music from  the new album, the music that within the charming dream pop frames smuggles a lot of fresh solutions.

First of all, almost everything here is either vocals or sounds derived from vocals. This results in absolutely mesmerizing, whispering backgrounds that suck the audience deeper and deeper every second. They're made of single phrases as in The Hour and Take My Scars or short, simple stanzas as in Sisters. It's slightly similar to my favourite song of 2017, 12 Decembers' Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl. But more and more. This all is provided with form by beats and drums as well as electric guitar sounds. But they play absolutely secondary roles here and in a very minimalist/DYI form. The album shows how a great idea can elevate a home-made album to quite another level. The tracks are pretty short and perhaps this is the space for improvement as I'd love to drown in the artist's sighs for longer.

The Nancy Downs to raczej tajemniczy projekt z Illinois, taki, o którym w sieci nie da się znaleźć prawie nic, także dlatego, że nazwę czerpie z popularnego filmu Szkoła czarownic. Ale tajemnicza jest również muzyka z najnowszej płyty artystki, muzyka, która w ramach urokliwego dream popu wprowadza wiele świeżych rozwiązań.

Przede wszystkim, prawie wszystko w niej jest wokalem albo dźwiękami z wokalu wyprowadzonymi. Efektem są absolutnie hipnotyzujące, szepczące tła wciągające słuchacza coraz głębiej i głębiej. Czy to pojedynczymi frazami w The Hour i Take My Scars czy krótkimi, prostymi zwrotkami w Sisters. Trochę przypomina mi to mój ulubiony kawałek 2017 Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl od 12 Decembers. Tylko więcej i bardziej. Do tego w formę ubierają tę muzykę bity i perkusje a także dźwięki gitary elektrycznej. Jednak są one absolutnie na drugim planie i w bardzo minimalistycznej /DYI formie. Ta płyta pokazuje, że znakomity pomysł może wynieść domowej roboty płytę na całkiem inny poziom. Kawałki są na ogół krótkie i tutaj poszukałbym pola do poprawy, aż chciałoby się zatonąć w westchnieniach artystki na dłużej.

Staghorn - Corvus IV (2020) PL

Amerykańskie Staghorn to bez wątpienia moje odkrycie zeszłorocznego festiwalu Dunk. Tak więc niezwykle się cieszę, że zespół wraca w tym roku z krótką płyta zatytułowaną Corvus IV.

Zespół zdecydowanie kupuje widownie mroczno folkowym imydżem, zarówno na scenie jak i choćby na cover artach. Jednak najważniejszy jest on w ekologiczno-apokaliptycznym światopoglądzie głoszonym przez artystów. W ich kawałkach przez wieki wykorzystywana natura jawi się jako siła, z którą należy się liczyć. A głoszą to nie tylko mocnym, wkręcającym się w mózg post-rockiem, ale też swoim znakiem szczególnym - nagrywanymi własnym sumptem samplami z recytowaną ni to poezją ni wstrząsającą gawędą pełną metafor i obrazowych fraz.

Żeby jednak bardziej zobrazować powagę sytuacji, zespół nie waha się używać elementów post-metalowych, takich jak naprawdę przejmujący wokal w Rahula. Największe wrażenie robi jednak epickie, monumentalne zakończenie w Samsarze.

Staghorn - Corvus IV (2020) EN

The American Staghorn undoubtedly made my greatest discovery during the last year's Dunk Festival. So I'm super happy they are back with a short album called Corvus IV.

The band decidedly bought me with their dark folk image both on the stage and the cover arts. But also in their ecological-apocalyptic worldview they preach. In their music, the abused nature seems to be the power people should not ignore. And they do that not only with a strong, brain-invading post-rock but also with their most characteristic trait - self-recorded samples containing spoken poetry or stirring tale filled with metaphors and picturesque phrases.

To illustrate the gravity of the situation, the band don't hesitate to use some post-metal elements like the poignant vocals in Rahula. Still, the most impressive track here has to be the epic and monumental finish in Samsara.

The Breakfast Menu - Sad Bastard Music (2020) PL

Niezwykły projekt z Illinois, The Breakfast Menu, wydał właśnie swój pierwszy album. Dziwny, depresyjny i dostarczający fantastycznej rozrywki Sad Bastard Menu.

Artysta (artyści?) od samego początku nie kryją, że podążają tropem charakterystycznej dla nowej muzyki fascynacji śmiercią i depresją, a równocześnie dostarczanie jej w atrakcyjnym, bardzo melodyjnym i urokliwym opakowaniu. Co tu kryć, najważniejszym momentem tego albumu jest absolutnie fantastyczny kawałek Think I'm Dying, wypełniony lo-fi'ową atmosferą i taką też przebojowością, z refrenem do natychmiastowego podśpiewywania i świetnymi aranżacjami.

Ale to nie jest album jednego kawałka, wręcz przeciwnie. Jest na niej dużo neurotycznej twórczości wprost stworzonej do takich lo-fi'owych albumów. Minimalistyczne na ogół aranżacje i trafiające do publiki teksty tylko to wzmacniają. Bardzo dobry debiut.

The Breakfast Menu - Sad Bastard Music (2020) EN

Weirdly intriguing project from Illinois, The Breakfast Menu, have just released the first album. Odd, depressive and providing fantastic fun Sad Bastard Menu.

The artist (artists?) from the very beginning doesn't hide that he follows the new music's characteristic trait of fascination of death and depression while serving it in attractive, melodic and charming way. There's no hiding it, the ost important moment of the album is the absolutely fantastic song Think I'm Dying, filled with lo-fi atmosphere and catchiness with a chorus that is immediately hummed and great arrangements.

But it's not a one-track album, quite the opposite. There's a lot of this neurotic music, perfectly fitting this lo-fi climates. Minimal, mostly at least, compositions and direct lyrics only make it more powerful. Very good debut.

Matt Jencik - Dream Character (2019) EN

Matt Jencik, a Chicago-based artist, has released his new album. And it's not an ordinary news as Dream Character is most probably the best album of the winter .

The new album is said to be the one on which Jencik introduced some new elements to his work - live improvisations and a whole range of live instruments from guitars to organs. It's hard to wrap your mind around the fact how heavy and overwhelming the ambient he created is, this album simply breaks under the weight of atmosphere and darkness. Of course, there's no high pace here, after all it's ambient music, but there's no way you could feel bored even for a second, that's how well the tracks are composed by the American.

Matt Jencik - Dream Character (2019) PL

Matt Jencik, artysta z Chicago wydał swoją nową płytę. I nie jest to informacja zwyczajna, bo album Dream Character może być najlepszym ambientem na przełomie 2019/2020.

Nowa płyta opisywana jest jako ta, na której Jencik dodał trochę nowości do swojej twórczości - improwizacje na żywo i cały szereg instrumentów, od gitary po organy. Ciężko pojąć jak gęsty i przytłaczający ambient udało mu się w ten sposób stworzyć, ten album ugina się od ciężaru atmosfery i mroku. Oczywiście nie ma mowy o zawrotnym tempie, to w końcu ambient, jednak nie sposób nudzić się choćby przez chwilę, ta dobrze skomponowane i wciągające są utwory Amerykanina.

Human Strange - Finale (2019) EN

Human Strange is a project from the Phillip Stosberg-Adam White duo, two artists from Chicago. Although not super well-known, they managed to release a new album and Finale is definitely worth getting to know by every fan of the shoegazing rock music.

First thing you notice is clearly White's vocal: not only peaceful, more like whispering, atmospheric and adding to the album's extreme ethereality. If you don't believe, just listen to the finish of the great opening track Faux Real. But this is not all, the same vocal can be very subtle and very unsettling, sounding like taken from soul music or stolen from Drab Majesty.

The music that goes together with the vocal is a non-imposing, very much alternative but also peaceful rock. There's some experiments there, some guitar noise, but first of all it's a perfect background for the vocal and charming songs.

Human Strange - Finale (2019) PL

Human Strange to projekt duetu Phillip Stosberg i Adam White, artystów z Chicago. Mimo, że nie są specjalnie znani, ich nowa płyta, Finale, jest zdecydowanie godna zauważenia przez fanów shoegaze'ującego rocka.

Pierwsze co rzuca się w oczy to oczywiście wokal White'a: nie tyle spokojny co wręcz szepczący, klimatyczny jak mało co i dodający niebywałej eteryczności. A jeśli ktoś nie wierzy to nie wysłucha sobie końcówki Faux Real. Ale to nie wszystko, ten sam wokal potrafi być bardzo delikatny i bardzo niepokojacy, raz brzmieć jak wzięty z soulu, a raz jak ukradziony Drab Majesty.

Muzyka mu towarzysząca to nienarzucający się, mocno alternatywny ale i spokojny rock. Jest kilka eksperymentalnych momentów, nieco gitarowego noise'u, ale przede wszystkim idealny podkład pod wokal i ujmujące piosenki.

Shallowdive - Shallowdive (2018) PL

Shallowdive inspirują się całą gamą muzycznych gatunków: od hardcore'u po indie pop, a spotykają się one na tle "głośnej, unurzanej w reverbach ścianie gitarowego dźwięku". Ta wypadkowa rodzi więc shoegaze'ową muzykę,  a jest ona naprawdę bardzo udana. Sprawdzić to można na zeszłorocznej EP-ce Shallowdive.

Oczywiście nazwa zespołu rodzi oczywiste shoegaze'owe skojarzenia, jednak jeśli z jakąś legendą gatunku miałbym Amerykanów porównywać, byłby to nie Slowdive a RIDE. To właśnie Anglicy wydają się być wzorem dla brzmienia Shallowdive, nie tylko jeśli chodzi o strukturę utworów, ale również melodie i samo brzmienie gitar. Bez wątpienia jest to bardzo słuszna inspiracja, a słychać ją zwłaszcza w Rain Comes Down, który spokojnie mógłby się znaleźć na kultowym Nowhere.

Aspektem, który z kolei zbliża zespół do Slowdive jest damski wokal pomagający męskiemu i dodający całości eteryczności. Jednak największą zaletą albumu jest ten RIDE-owski sznyt łączący przebojowe, gitarowe melodie i chóralny wokal, Shallowdive mają bardzo dobry obiekt inspiracji.

Shallowdive - Shallowdive (2018) EN

Shallowdive are inspired by te whole spectre of genres: from hardcore up to indie pop, and those genres meet behind the "loud, reverb drenched, wall of guitar sound". This combination gives birth to shoegaze music that is indeed a good one. You can check on the last year's EP called simply Shallowdive.

Of course, the band's name makes obvious shoegaze associations, but if I was to compare the Americans to some legend of the genre, it would be RIDE rather than Slowdive. The English seem to be the main inspiration for Shallowdive's music, not only in the way they compose their songs, but also with melodies and guitar sounds. Absolutely a righteous inspiration and it's seen most noticeably in Rain Comes Down that could be a part of the legendary Nowhere, easy.

The aspect making the band closer to Slowdive though is the female backing vocals helping the male one and adding to the music's airiness. But the best thing about the album is clearly the RIDE-esque vibe combining the catchy guitar melodies and collective vocals, Shallowdive made a good inspiration choice.
