93MillionMilesFromTheSun - Let Go (2024)

The British nugaze powerhouse is a frequent guest on this blog and there are good reasons for it. Led by Nick Noble, the noisy collective released their new album (I can't count so well to tell you which one in their discography) when other people were just getting calmer before Christmas.

It's their signature sound: you have to dig deep into the layers of noisy guitars, samples and whatnot to find the soft vocals and melodies. But if you do that, you are rewarded with some most beautiful and catchy songs on the shoegaze market, as in Sleep for example. This track could easily be an indie rock hit if stripped down of the noisy elements, but it'd lose a lot of its charm, no doubt about it. The punch, the melancholia lie in the overwhelming music the band donates right into the audience's ears. Sleep is dethroned as my best-loved later in the album by Only Living Now, which became one of my favourite songs at the beginning of the new year.

If I have to have one complaint, it's that it's too long for my attention span. Interestingly, Noble states that it was their most difficult album to finish and show to the world due to the band's lineup changes (which I don't hear in their sound at all) and personal problems. 'If I'm honest,' he adds, 'I'm not sure I still do want it to come out'. I, for one, am keen to say that I'm very happy it did in the end. Made the year's end better than it could have been.

Yes, Nick Noble and his 93MillionMilesFromTheSun is back with another brilliant album. I can't stop posting about those releases as the project's sound is so unique and satisfying and yet still not that well-recognized. And perhaps it usually seems similar but I recon it's the point, those mesmerizing vibes of shoegaze are not something I'd change.

This is how I see Why Do We Fall Apart anyway. It sounds like a truthful continuation of all the previous works under this moniker and I seldom see it as a disadvantage. If you have something awesome, why wouldn't you want more of it? The new material gives us the heavy and deep layer of shoegaze haze we know and love, the noisy soundscapes go on through a whole hour and never start being less exciting. The melodies have to be carefully listened to to get the grasp of their catchiness (Everything Undone being the best example here) and when you do, it's very satisfying.

The whole album is filled with the notion of sadness and life-going-really-bad feeling. This music is the perfect way to convey this without sounding too pretentious - it's like that and we make songs about this but this message has to be found within them. And everything is drowned in the most beautiful haze.

The band from the 93 million miles away from the Sun England treats us this year every few months with new fantastic doses of music. After releasing "The Lonely Sea & The Sky" in April, they decided to delight fans of Slowdive with an EP with covers of the newest songs by the shoegaze legend. I should say that those two bands really come along together.

"Victory Is Ours" is a compilation of shoegazing tracks that could as well be written by some of those legends of the genre. The trio makes so much noise that they are sure to be heard even on the Sun but simultaneously, they have this ability to put the noise inside melodies that tend to communicate with the audience's souls. You can hear it in the super-touching "When The Light Has Gone", mesmerizing "Forever Gone Today" and, especially, in the monumental "Kings Of The 80's".

Zespół z oddalonej o 93 miliony mil od słońca Anglii raczy nas w tym roku co chwilę fantastycznymi dawkami muzyki. po kwietniowej "The Lonely Sea & The Sky" zachwycili fanów Slowdive EPką z coverami nowych kawałków legendy shoegaze'u. Trzeba przyznać, że oba zespoły do siebie pasują.

"Victory Is Ours" to kolejna porcja shoegaze'owych kompozycji, których nie powstydziłyby się tuzy gatunku. Trio robi tyle hałasu, że słychać ich pewnie na słońcu, a jednocześnie ma ten dar do zamknięcia go w melodiach komunikujących się z duszą słuchaczy. Słychać to w super przejmującym "When The Light Has Gone", hipnotyzującym "Forever Gone Today" i zwłaszcza monumentalnym "Kings Of The 80's".

They call themselves "fans of good old shoegaze" (Slowdive, MBV, RIDE) who break stereotypes about traditional approach to music in Yorkshire society. But I'm not going to spoil it, the band's description on their FB page is reaaaally worth reading. The name is related, obviously, to the planet that orbits in the given distance from the Sun. To Earth. Poetic and not so obvious description of a thing so down-to-earth (yeah, pun intended) as our planet says a lot about the music created by the British.

Their new album is not really homogeneous. The band balances more peaceful tracks ("Feeling Lost") with some faster and more catchy ones (probably the album's best one "Without You Near"). Same goes for the music genre labels. 93millionmiles sound sometimes like thick, sticky shoegaze treacle only to surprise the listeners with some poprock/postpunk melodic pieces ("Catch You Fall") that is a neighbour of a very much post-rock and epic track "Movement". A poison for everyone.

Sami siebie określają jako fanów starego, dobrego shoegaze'u (Slowdive, MBV, RIDE) łamiących stereotypy związane z tradycyjnym podejściem do muzyki mieszkańców angielskiego Yorkshire. Zresztą nie będę robił spoilerów, bo opis zespołu na ich facebookowym koncie czyta się z niekłamaną przyjemnością do czego zachęcam. Nazwa odwołuje się naturalnie do ciała niebieskiego znajdującego się w takiej odległości od słońca. Czyli do Ziemi (149 600 000 km by być zrozumiałym poza UK). Poetycko i w nieoczywisty sposób opisana tak przyziemna (pun intended) sprawa jak nasza planeta to idealny opis muzyki Anglików.

Płyta nie jest do końca homogeniczna. Zespół balansuje pomiędzy utworami spokojniejszymi ("Feeling Lost") a szybszymi i bardziej przebojowymi (najlepszy chyba na całej płycie "Without You Near"). Podobnie jest z przypasowaniem gatunkowym - 93millionmiles czasem brzmią jak gęsta, klejąca się shoegaze'owa melasa by za chwilę zaskoczyć całkiem poprockowym/postpunkowym i melodyjnym kawałkiem ("Catch You Fall") sąsiadującym z zupełnie post-rockowym epickim "Movement". Każdy znajdzie tutaj swoją truciznę.
