W ostatnich latach, przede wszystkim od wydania Deathconsciousness (a to już przecież ponad dekada!), mówiąc post-punk skrzyżowany z shoegaze'em myśli się o Have a Nice Life. Na szczęście artyści z Connecticut wydają wciąż swoją muzyką na Bandcampie więc mam przyjemność napisać o nowym, znakomitym albumie Sea of Worry.

Surowe, nieco lo-fi'owe dźwięki pierwszego na płycie i tytułowego Sea of Worry od razu zapowiadają bardzo solidną pozycję. Zimna oprawa i zdystansowany, często pokrzykujący wokal to znakomite podsumowanie post-punku formacji. Czasem jednak słychać muzyczne nawiązania do drugiego najbardziej znanego projektu Dana Barretta, Giles Corey - tak jak w Science Beat, w którym wokal jets wycofany i ledwo słyszalny, a całość hipnotyzuje ponurym rytmem.

Na uwagę zasługuje zwłaszcza Lords of Tresserhorn, tak samo noise'owo chaotyczny, a do tego zakończony prawdziwym hałaśliwym ciasteczkiem. O ile generalnie wolę Giles Corey to obok nowego wydawnictwa Have a Nice Life przejść obojętnie się nie da.

Galaxy Fingers - Let In Elijah EP (2018) PL

To niemal filmowa historia: Alex i Clara spotkali się w Japonii, a po powrocie do Stanów odkryli, że chęć do tworzenia razem muzyki jest silniejsza niż geografia (a mieszkają na stałe na zupełnie przeciwnych krańcach Ameryki). I tak narodziło się Galaxy Fingers i ich debiutancka EP-ka Let in Elijah.

Ich muzyka to hołd dla popowej strony dream popu: bezpretensjonalne kawałki pełne radości z tworzenia muzyki oraz łagodnej, leniwej atmosfery. Zderzenie ciepłego, szepczącego wokalu Aleksa i bedroom popowego Clary to szkielet ich muzyki. A do tego lo-fi'owa muzyka i lekkie melodie to fantastyczny przepis na weekendową, relaksującą muzykę.

A ta potrafi też się zbiesić. Wystarczy wsłuchać się w Hugs When You're Anxious i tę, oczywiście, znerwicowaną końcówkę. Bardzo miła niespodzianka, zrywająca nieco ze nostalgiczną słodyczą reszty płyty.

Galaxy Fingers - Let In Elijah EP (2018) EN

It's almost a movie story: Alex and Clara met in Japan and after coming back to States, they found out that their urge to create music together is greater than geography (they live on two opposite sides of US). And so Galaxy Fingers were born together with their debut EP called Let in Elijah.

Their music is a tribute to the pop face of dream pop: genuine tracks filled with the happiness that comes from making music and with the delicate, lazy atmosphere. The combination of Alex's warm, whispering vocal and Clara's bedroom pop-ish one makes the core of their music. Together with the lo-fi music and light melodies create a fantastic recipe for some relaxing weekend music.

But they still are able to go rouge. Just listen to Hugs When You're Anxious and its, obviously, nervous finish. A pleasant surprise, changing the overall sweet mood of the album.

Landing - Bells In New Towns (2018) EN

Landing give us great albums for over twenty years now, they were on this blog last year with their EP called "Taeppe". Now it's high time for another long-play as I already missed the moody and dreamy shoegaze by the band with the line-up consisting of Daron Gardner, John Bent, Aaron Snow and Adrienne Snow.

The album's opener, "Nod", introduces the very thing we know about the band - heavy guitars and clear drums combined with the unrealistically airy vocal by Snow, that often goes to such extremes that it sounds as if whispered directly to your ear. And it has to go through the layers of guitar sounds! After that, there are more clasically written dream pop tracks ("By Two") but it doesn't mean they lack any of the atmosphere and the beauty.

They are divided by instrumental interludes called "Gravitational" as they have in them something from this space nothingness and sci-fi movies samples. Some of this climate stays in the following tracks, especially in "Bright" and probably the most interesting one on the album, "Secret", introduced by a long, tension-building sequence. It seems that Snow's voice and the dense atmosphere of dream pop are meant for each other and no wonder the band manage to release something great every year.

Landing od dwudziestu lat wydaje kolejne doskonałe albumy, gościł już także na tym blogu z EP-ką "Taeppe". Tym razem pora na kolejny długogrający album i w samą porę bo już stęskniłem się za nastrojowo senny shoegaze kwartetu, w skład którego wchodzą Daron Gardner, John Bent, Aaron Snow i Adrienne Snow.

Otwierający płyty utwór "Nod" wprowadza od razu to, do czego się przyzwyczailiśmy - szarpiące gitary i wyraźna perkusja połączone z niemożliwie eterycznym wokalem Snow, który nierzadko wpada w takie rejestry, że brzmi jak szeptany do ucha, chociaż przecież musi przebijać się przez ścianę gitarowego dźwięku. Potem częściej pojawiają się bardziej klasycznie napisane dream popowe kawałki ("By Two"), którym jednak nie brakuje ani atmosfery ani urody.

Poprzetykane są instrumentalnymi interludiami zatytułowanymi "Gravitational" bo też mają w sobie coś z kosmicznej pustki i sampli nadających się do filmów sci-fi. Trochę z tego klimatu zostaje w kolejnych kawałkach z "Bright" na czele, a także w najciekawszym chyba na płycie, poprzedzony długim intrem "Secret". Wydaje się, że głos Snow i atmosfera dusznego dream popu są dla siebie stworzone, nic dziwnego, że prawie co roku tworzą coś nowego.

Dolls Come To Life - Neptune Dogs (2017) EN

Dolls Come To Life is an artistically non-copiable duet consisting of singer/songwriter Michelle Cross and experimental musician Joe Frawley. This exciting mix combines piano music a'la Tori Amos, and sometimes even dark cabaret-like, with ambient and sometimes even alternative-disco electronics.

And both of the extremes gives to the project their best features. Take "Abduction" - both deep and airy voice of Cross with melodic xylophone like keys and sci-fi clips found in some NASA transmissions. The atmosphere that could hardly be copied, mostly because nobody'd think of such a combination. This cosmic kind of poetry here is quite common, as in "Pale Blue Dot" that makes a fantastic description of the planet Earth.

The whole album is full of surprises. It is indicated already by its title - "Neptune Dogs", suggesting both a sci-fi atmosphere of the electronic music and something surreal, uncanny, impossible. and if there's someone who is still not convinced, taking a look at the cover art and the space goat should do the trick.

Dolls Come To Life to artystycznie niepowtarzalny duet wokalistki i songwriterki Michelle Cross i eksperymentalnego muzyka Joe'a Frawleya. Ten wybuchowy miks łączy klawiszową muzykę spod znaku Tori Amos, a czasem nawet mrocznego kabaretu, z ambientowymi, a czasem wręcz elektryką z alternatywnej dyskoteki.

I oba te bieguny oferują to, co w mają w sobie najlepsze. Weźmy na przykład "Abduction" - jednocześnie głęboki i eteryczny głos Cross, wygrywające melodię dzwonki i kosmiczne wstawki znalezione gdzieś w transmisjach radiowych NASA. Klimat ciężki do podrobienia, głównie dlatego, że mało kto wpadłby na takie połączenia. Kosmicznej poezji jest zdecydowanie więcej, np. "Pale Blue Dot" to fantastyczny opis Ziemi.

Cała płyta zresztą tym zadziwia. Zdradza to zresztą jej tytuł - "Psy z Neptuna". Sugeruje jednocześnie sci-fi'owy klimat muzycznej elektroniki i coś surrealistycznego, niezwykłego, niemożliwego. A jeśli komuś mało, jedno spojrzenie na kosmiczną kozę i gramofon na okładce powinien mieć ostateczne słowo.

"Neptune Dogs" można mieć za płać ile chcesz.

Landing - Taeppe EP (2017) EN

Landing is a well known band already. They play for 19 years now and managed to released not less than 10 albums and almost as many EPs. So they are far from appear here by accident. Their new EP proves that the Americans know how to create atmospheric and dreamy shoegaze.

Oh, and as they state, they are not mormons.

The album is opened by "Page After Page" that is astonishing in the way it evolves from initial chaos of uncoordinated sounds into slow beauty underlined by Adrienne Snow (who, she states herself, loves tea)'s oneiric vocals. The instrumental layer is also a strong side of the band as they create a thick blanket of loud although not hurrying to anywhere music. It is guaranteed by Aaron Snow (allergic to cats) and Daron Gardner. If there's anyone who doesn't know Landing's works, the new EP is a good starting point to get to know them.

Landing to zespół o uznanej już marce. Na scenie już od 19 lat, w tym czasie nagrał aż dziesięć albumów i niemal drugie tyle epek. Tym bardziej więc nie pojawia się tutaj przypadkiem. Kolejną epką, Amerykanie udowadniają, że znają się na tworzenie klimatycznego i sennego shoegaze'u.

Aha, jak sami zaznaczają, nie są mormonami.

Płytę otwiera "Page After Page", w którym zachwyca sposób w jaki utwór rodzi się z początkowego chaosu i nieskoordynowanych dźwięków w niespieszne piękno podkreślone fantastycznie oniryczny wokalem Adrienne Snow (która, jak zaznacza, uwielbia herbatę). Mocną stroną są również instrumenty tworzące gruby, nieprzenikniony całun głośnej, chociaż nigdzie nie spieszącej się muzyki. Gwarantują to Aaron Snow (uczulony na koty) i Daron Gardner. Jeśli ktoś nie zna twórczości Landing, nowa epka jest dobrym punktem wyjścia.
