Sara Parkman - Aster, atlas (2026)

I know her from 2022 Funeral Folk album where she created, well, some funeral-feeling folk with her compatriot Maria W Horn. But I have never heard her solo works and this has, fortunately, changed with the release of this beautiful record. Artful pop inspired as much by folk as by the trademark Scandinavian sensibility.

The 6th album in the Swedish artist's discography is a treat for artistic folk lovers. The inspirations are pretty clear: the energetic but also mysterious vocals, the violins like from Midsommar, the choir singing as if it was recorded in a small church somewhere in the Saami country. This is Scandinavian folk. But there is so much more on Aster, atlas. In Paradiset we have some real dark notes, finally conquered by the hopeful ending. There is some spoken word, very lyric-heavy vocals thrown around through the album's landscape. And finally, my favourite (of course) song, Salikons rosor, that starts slow but successively gets more nervous and louder, up to the crescendoing, orchestral finish that resonates in your ears for a long time. Yeah, well, I'm a post-rock fan.

But I like the slower parts of the album equally much. Those melancholic, but soothing seconds of an intensive one-on-one with Parkman's voice are there to enchant the sadder parts of your souls. Also: the fact that everything is in Swedish, I language I don't speak but I recognize a lot of words, but there are also parts in Latin, is always a great sign too.

Den Der Hale - Larking About (2026)

Den Der Hale is a band that has been very close to this blog for several years now but because of various reasons, never appeared here. This had to finally change cause earlier this spring, the Swedes released an album that shows a) some fantastically atmospheric music and b) what a change a band's sound can undergo in a short time. If I really had to judge, it's a change for good.

As they describe it, the sound of Den Der Hale's music underwent some major changes (also due to the line up changes) and for this album turned from more traditionally rock-based to experimental with "tape loops, resampling, and acoustic instruments" playing the major role here. The results are spectacular. While the previous albums had this kind of psychedelic rock with post-rock elements charm, Larking About is more about the silent parts, the passages that slowly build up to some kind of resolution and that create atmosphere that is as mysterious as it is exciting.

Everything on this album is less in your face and more subtly suggested. The unnerving atmosphere, the whispering vocals, the feeling of anticipation. The heavier parts are scarce but it only makes them more poignant, requiring more attention from the listener to properly experience everything from the instrumental ambient to the airy choirs to the post-metal pinnacles of the compositions. Heavy (even if not very loud on average) and very artsy (but not pretentious) album.

Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet - IV (2026)

Friends and foes (although they seem to have stopped saying that), the new album from Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet just dropped. And it did drop to the very bottom of the planet chasms as it is "inspired by the core of the earth" with music heavy as our world and just as beautiful. This is one of the albums that effortlessly mixes the melodic and the overwhelming kinds of post-rock to create a one of a kind experience.

The heavy and poignant post-rock sub-genre has already made a mark on this year with Syberia's new release. But it seems that the relentless, never-giving-up guitar music is in great shape as the Swede's *checks notes* fourth album is most certainly just as good. Dark as basalt, heavy as granite but also hot as molten lava and filled with the same strange, forbidden beauty. The way the surprisingly frequent melodic parts are paired here with powerful, overwhelming sound avalanches is truly inspiring. It works very well especially in the longest tracks (like Strävan that finishes with the airy, folk-like sequence or Karg's mining-like mesmerizing riffs). 

The inspirations for the album are pretty obvious. The Scandinavian landscape and atmosphere even exaggerated with the notion of the unfathomable weight of the Earth's rock core. And you can feel it in your bones, but most probably it's only a trial version compared to what the live performance of this album will.

Orsak:Oslo - Silt and Static (2025)

The Norwegian (but moved to Sweden I think?) band's 4th album (or tracks 82 to 90 as they kindly inform in the tracks' titles) showcases three things about the artists: the prog's love for highlighting guitar riffs, the psychedelia's love for long and mesmerizing passages and the post-rock's atmosphere building. And it makes a really interesting concoction.

There is not too much of either of those. Even if I don't love prog, I still enjoy the riffs here because they are skillfully used to build up an interesting and rather heavy atmosphere. I don't particularly like melodic post-rock but in here it's the best dose of the melodies and guitar catchiness. There is also a good touch of noisy parts so what not to love? The guitar-based instrumental music that is both genre-bending and quite simply very well-written, creating loundscapes that are as diverse as they are of the same, wild and moody nature.

My favourite track here must be 089 Break and Sink, most certainly because its beginning I associated (first subconsciously and later quite consciously) with my favourite track from Cult of Luna to which it's sort of not too far from. I feel like it's the perfect example of what the artists mean when they say that they "[have] taken several steps into deepening their expression, but still each track carries a foundation and core feel that will spark knowing nods from those who’ve followed the band for a long time".

Meierkord/Andersson - Passager (2025)

Two Scandinavian artists Henrik Meierkord and Pelle Andersson joined forces to create a gem of an album. This neoclassical release is as beautiful as it is dark and unnerving.

"A thoughtful soundscape filled with blackness and sadness but also streaks of light" is what the album is called on the artists' Bandcamp and there is no way to deny that. The piano keys come and go, making the world a bit more beautiful with each stroke. But they are only a counterbalance here. The slowness of the compositions and the gravity of strings in the backgrounds make the instrumental soundscapes ridiculously unnerving in the most attractive of ways.

And there is a good reason for the concept for the album as Andersson had to face the cruelty of serious sickness and all the emotions it brings with itself. Once again, the quote from the artists describes it in the best way possible, calling the album "passages between hope and warmth, despair and panic. Where light meets darkness, the beautiful the distorted".

Julia Gjertsen & Gustav Davidsson - Wandering Mind, Drifting Weather (2025)

When two Scandinavian neoclassical artists come together to create a beautiful soundscape, it almost never disappoints. This time the Norwegian pianist and the Swedish trombonist charm not only with the sheer quality of the music but also with the a new and exciting (at least to me) match of instruments.

I'm not a fan of trumpet and similar instruments in music. I can't describe exactly what I dislike in those, but with some exception I tend to avoid trumpet-led compositions. And yet this album sounds so perfect! Especially that Gustav Davidsson manages to create melancholic sounds on the trombone without sounding too on the nose or even cringey. That's why it works so well with the subtle piano melodies that play the role of lively yet atmospheric backgrounds. 

As it is the case with many Scandinavia artists, Gjertsen and Davidsson are inspired by the weather in their countries that can be especially picturesque. Judging by the track titles, those days were very much Scandinavian-like: melancholia-inspiring and slow. If that was the case, the album makes a perfect soundtrack for them.

Barrens - Corpse Lights (2025)

Their 2020 debut was a shock to me. How can you include such fantastic post-rock music on your first ever album? No wonder I recognize the Swedes as one of my biggest discoveries within the genre in recent years. Now it's time for a difficult step: proving your value on the second album. And, surprise, surprise, Barrens took the step with extreme grace.

The release starts strong with my two favourites: The Derelict and Sorrowed. Those tracks have everything: the engaging but not cringey melodies, the flow, the heaviness to the sound. These are absolute hits if post-rock music can generates hits at all. These must be the pinnacles of the live gigs (I don't know yet, but hopefully I'll find out if that's true soon). They are the parts of the album that will be remembered. After that duo, the Swedes step on the brake pedals and try to enchant the audience with some ambient atmosphere developing into slower grandeur-filled pieces, but, I have to say, I like them best when they are fast and furious.

The album is a well-balanced one. The way the band combines the melodic fragments with darker and heavier ones makes me think that any post-rock fan will surely like this album, but perhaps for different things. I like the darker and heavier, but also faster parts and can honestly say that it's a real continuation of the fantastic debut.

Kallsup - En sista räddning (2025)

Debuting shoegazey band from the VÅRØ label? I'm interested! And once again, the Swedish label delivers an extremely interesting group with music that marries energetic indie rock with outstanding  noisy and dreamy elements, making me think of bands like Pia Fraus for example.

In this music, the dreamy vocals are usually put on the pedestal, leading the indie pop songs with catchy melodies and light atmosphere. But it's not always the case. I especially love it when the Swedes' melodic pop drowns in noisy parts. This is especially well noticeable in the opening track that makes a beautiful composition with a fantastic finish. For me, the more drowning in the dense, sticky noise, the better. And I have to say, the band is really good in creating a good quality noise.

But the real goat here is Forever, the song that brings everything to the table: the moody melody, the airy atmosphere and the insanely catchy chorus.

The Heart of the Sun - Blue Album (2025)

Filiph Antonsson comes from Sweden and creates an involving psychedelic pop that includes some great traits of the genre: catchy melodies, mesmerizing atmosphere and interesting lyrics. After years of singles, he finally released a longer album and it's absolutely worth checking out.

Sure, the multi-layered, dense music is great, the atmosphere captures you and doesn't let you out before the album ends, the vocals are dreamy and pleasant. But what I like the most about Antonsson's debut are the story-driven and very lyrical texts. Especially in Probably Not that gives me strong Grandaddy vibes which is a great compliment in my books. I feel like the two artists have a similar approach to music: the lyrical layer is the most important, but it has to be not too abstract and must be accompanied by at least equally intriguing music. It works so well in this single track.

But the further the album goes, the more psychedelic it gets. The space-like So Many Secrets to Reveal certainly doesn't sound like it will reveal any of said secrets. The psychedelia element is what drove me to the album, but the lyrical sensibility is what made me stay.

Tjaktjadálvve - Echoes on a Windswept Plain (2023)

The Australian-born and Sweden-based artist known as Tjaktjadálvve is the new addition to the Italian post-metal-oriented label Flowing Downward. His new, and as it seems, debut LP called Echoes on a Windswept Plain is kept in the crushingly noisy but ethereally beautiful atmosphere.

It's fast, it's loud and it's airy: the music on the album check all the must-haves of a good blackgaze sound. The incredible flow of the tracks, heavy guitars and the black metal vocals go together splendidly, making one, coherent, brutally beautiful sound. The long composition don't waste too much time to peak and then, the deafening, synth-rich sound goes on and on, making the audience stun for long minutes. Those longer compositions are divided by shorter breaks to catch some breath and create even more atmosphere, only to go on again with the beautiful noise on the other side of the sonic valley.

DIMWIND - The Futility of Breathing (2023)

Two Swedish artists, Andreas Hansen and Jonas Eriksson make music together as DIMWIND. The second album, The Futility of Breathing, follows the 2021 debut Slow Wave Violence with a heavy blast of instrumental guitar music.

They claim that their music "strive(s) to provoke both reflection and empowerment" while the album  is devoted to "exploring a state of grief after losing a loved one". And this is further fueled by a personal tragedy that hit one of the artists, making the whole music experience even more honest and poignant. They express the theme with a heavy take on post-rock music with a multitude of metal music references. The metal's traditional guitar work meets the post-rock-like compositions that emanate the might of the heavy music with a hint of melancholy all over the place.

Fågelle - Den svenske vreden (2023)

It seems like Scandinavian countries are a limitless source of (usually female) artists who create music that is both exceptionally artsy and utterly atmospheric. Let's not waste space here on enlisting them, it's enough to say that Klara Andersson aka Fågelle is another one who is already well-known on the European music scene. This year she came back with her sophomore album called Den svenske vreden.

Although the title translates to "the Swedish anger", anger is not something the music itself conveys here. From the music perspective, it's more a melancholic, slightly dark kind of high-brow pop music that looks for new means of expression rather than choosing the easy ways to grab the attention of the audience. So it's less about the melodic music, it's more about employing such music items as "twisted field recordings, mobile memories, digital trash, dark electronics, and howling choirs while moving between harmony and noise" to create something memorable.

And this comes with Andersson's vocals that feel so very close to the audience, never hidden behind the music background, bringing tons of emotions to the table, although it doesn't feel like an over-the-top performance. They are quite surprisingly balanced at one point by the particularly male-deep vocals by Joakim Thåström  in Kroppen, but otherwise it really feels like it's a party of one artist with all the attention drawn to her.

Ef - We salute you, you and you! (2022)

The fifth album in the Swedish band's discography came after a long, almost a decade-long hiatus. But it was worth waiting for as We salute you, you and you! brings what best in the Nordic way of approaching post-rock music.

In their music the lively guitars and beautiful strings coexist with the Immanu El-like atmospheric vocals. The single's Moments of Momentum is the perfect example of this brilliant way of building compositions, the best way to end up with an instant post-rock hit in my opinion. There's a healthy dose of the music mystery and atmosphere without being too bland. And while the opening track is mostly focused on the mood, the Swedish prove that it's also possible to use guitars and string in more energetic, louder way.

I can't say if what strikes in their music the most is the airiness or the energy. Even the most ethereal tracks like Hymn of... can very quickly transform into almost post-hardcore passage of gloomy aggression (which is a nod to the artists' past in hardcore music). The whole album is a bag filled with various moods with an ambient Leuven added for a good measure, and this is what makes it a spectacular comeback. It is such a bliss that, also thanks to the uneventful life in the times of the pandemics, the band decided to come back together.

She Sees - Sakernas tillst​å​nd (2022)

The post-rockers of Shee Sees released their second (or third, depending on the source) album called Sakernas tillst​å​nd and I must say, although I haven't heard of the band before, they have everything that I love in post-rock music.

The most unique thing about the band is the use of the violin sound - not the bombastic and cinematic kind but more artsy and truer to the folk roots. And this alone makes me think of Godspeed You! Black Emperor in some, more atmospheric parts of the album. But violin, although a very important part of the Swedes' music, is not all there is. I can't help but love the overall vibes of this kind of post-rock: it's heavy and guitar-oriented but not overwhelming, it's fast and providing distinct melodies but not too pop-like, it's melancholic but not in the depressing way. Häxmässa is the faster track with the incredible flow that kidnaps the audience, Andakt is the moodier instrumental ballad but the real violin-guitar-drums madness comes in the album's finisher in 44 dagar. And not only once as the track feels like it's reaching its crescendos at least several times.

Ecovillage - The Road Not Taken (2022)

The Emil Holmström - Peter Wikström duo makes their music for a while now. In fact, The Road Not Taken is their 10th album in discography and they decided to celebrate this fact by inviting an impressive team of guests.

The most striking name is of course Fennesz. The Austrian ambient icon played guitars in the opening track called  Spark, a track that sets the tone for the whole release. Its quiet and subtle composition is designed to bring peace to the listener as well as take them into this self-reflecting, thoughtful state that can always be very much appreciated. But Fennesz is not the only exciting face here. And the other guests brought their instruments, making the album a neoclassical-infused, melancholic soundscape. It's filled with cello and viola (Henrik Meierkord and Aaron Martin), vibraphone (Masayoshi Fujita) and harp (Nailah Hunter) sounds which truly makes for a beautiful combo.

The album serves as a summary of a certain part of the duo's music career and probably also as an oportunisty to look back at some of their choices - this would suggest the album's title, taken from Robert Frost's poem. Nevertheless, a really good piece of subtle music.

Yet another fantastic project from Switzerland; but the Zurich's outfit are not new to the music stage, they are around since 2014 and have released one full length album. The Heart of the Sun - Probably Not

Stockholm-based Filiph Antonsson leads this music project that goes with moody but also pretty complex compositions and very sad vocals ornamented with voice samples and finished with mesmerizing psychedelic passage. It's a real autumn kind of music. The single costs 0.75 EUR (8 SEK).

Jellies - Always

Two artists, Adam and Tommy live on the other sides of the Atlantic Ocean but they manage to create something very dreamy and very melodic together. Especially the first track here creates particularly moody atmosphere in this bedroom pop kind of style. Two songs cost 2.5 EUR (2 GBP).

Jiangnan Shangguan - No Beginning Where Everything Ends

A member of the Californian post-rock outfit In Lights, Jiangnan Shangguan, created a deliciously atmospheric, ambient pop-like experiment. There are emotional vocals here but distant and covered by noisy music all around. The track costs whatever you want to pay.

The Lauren Andino-Glenn Fryatt duo comes from Los Angeles and, very much in the Californian noise/dream pop fashion, released an extremely airy piece of melodic music. Andino's vocals are utterly oneiric while still managing to bring catchy melodies to life. Three songs cost 5 USD.

Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet - III (2022)

A week after this year's edition of Dunk!Festival, I can safely say that while I witnessed tons of fantastic live gigs there run by artists I know and love, the one that turned out to be my biggest discovery certainly is the Swedish band of Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet. The festival was the first occasion to listen to their new material, coincidentally released just before the event.

The album, simply titled III, is a perfect example of the approach to post-rock I value the most: the accents are put towards making atmospheric and dark-sounding music with a lot of grandeur and heaviness. This kind of instrumental music successfully adopted by God Is an Astroanut in recent years, and also played by bands such as TESA, Barrens or Year of No Light, is unbelievably impressive, especially live when the audience can experience the dark passion flowing from the artists together with the torrents of sweat. The heights of this music are made of ecstatic passages that bring on all the monumental feelings with the unlimited flow of the blissful guitar noise.

As the band call their own modus operandi, it's all about "mixing darker and heavier themes with fragility" and so there's a certain amount of minutes on III devoted to the quieter, subtly guitar build ups that always end up with heavy crescendos eventually. If this is not the peak of post-rock genre, I don't know what will be.

Lights & Motion - The World I Remember (2022)

It's been too long not seeing Christoffer Franzén on my blog. Two years ago his The Great Wide Open brought tons of ethereal post-rock vibes to my world and to this website, and now we can admire the next album created under the moniker of Lights & Motion, one entitled The World I Remember.

As always, the weight of his certified super airy post-rock music is limitless. There's few people who can create post-rock music and at the same time fill it with so much of the ethereal, Nordic atmosphere that is both up-lifting and hopeful, melancholic and beautiful. The key to this music is creating post-rock, very much guitar-filled music with the neoclassical sensibility (and neoclassical instruments as well). This, together with a lot of airy backing vocals, brings to life the grand, a bit bombastic and very satisfying soundscape.

Having said that, Franzén can easily change the mood to something heavier, more post-rock-like in the track aptly called Panic Attack but it is still swiftly balanced by The First Day's piano keys and the whole neoclassical might. Simply beautiful.

Horse Show - Falsterbo (2021)

A new supergroup from the Swedish city of Malmö released their first every album. The EP is called Falsterbo, making it the most difficult album to search for online (as Falsterbo is actually a name of a horse show in Sweden). But most importantly, it's a great debut all about fuzzy and melodic noise pop songs.

The band consists of members of a handful of bands from Malmö and the southern Sweden in general (like Hater, FEWS and YAST), who may have various music backgrounds but together make up an ethereally energetic combination. This supergroup of the Scania airy tunes, filled their debut EP with lively dream pop music that makes me think of the early Pia Fraus: there's noise, there's fuzzy guitars, but the melodies are what drives the project. There's a lot of earnest songwriting here: the songs feel straightforwardly fun and energetic with this lo-fi twee vibes all over them. It's all well audible in songs like Used To, Memory Chain or my favourite one Shame - all of them present an insane level of catchiness. Not to forget that Shame finishes with a very psychedelic and noisy way - the perfect combination. The short album really fits my private discovery of Swedish dream pop artists that made a great deal of the last year's airy music playlist for me.

WE​.​THE PIGS - WE​.​THE PIGS (2021)

It's been already 6 years (!) since the Swedish band WE.THE PIGS' debut EP I posted about on this blog back in its beginnings. The musicians finally (!) released their first LP and, fortunately, I can safely say it was wort waiting for as the self-titled album shows a lot of noisy and dreamy magic.

Their noise pop is characterized with lo-fi, bedroom recordings quality and it directly influences the haziness and mystery surrounding the melodies. To dig through the noise and the whole fog of imperfect sounds to reach the airy vocals and lofty tunes is a fantastic experience. And very rewarding too as songs like Drift to Sleep or Curtains show how beautifully merged the ethereality and catchiness are here. It goes without saying that the airy vocals and ballad-like compositions boost the ethereal atmosphere that is thick and moody from the album's beginning to its end. Not to mention the melancholic, city-based and emotional lyrics. And even when the band steps on it and gets more indie-rock powerful in songs like Fuck Your Songs or Vi striker, the overall blanket of haze and dream-like atmosphere swiftly reappear to provide more airy vibes for the audience.
