Plastic Mermaids - It's Not Comfortable to Grow (2022)

Since their 2019 album Suddenly Everyone Explodes and their Kraków gig this year, I love the Isle of Wight band and their improvisation-full, psychedelic style of music. After the gig, the artists mentioned that there's a new album coming and now it's official: It's Not Comfortable to Grow is a perfect continuation of this crazy discography.

There's no doubt that Plastic Mermaids love experimenting. With their style of being (think IDLES kind of weirdness) and their music. The latter involves the eclectic, pace-changing and colourful compositions with synthesizer heavy walls of sound that can as easy melt into minimalist electronic passages. There's so much going on this music and everything is simply flying on the back of catchy melodies (Girl Boy Girl, Disposable Love and many more on this album) and lyrics sung by the unique, a bit nervous but also very dream pop-like vocals by Douglas Richards. And it doesn't matter really if they make a faster and catchier tune or a ballad (like It's Pretty Bad), there's always multitude of things going on in the backgrounds and trying to decode it is a huge part of the fun.

But all of this chaotic music has a huge melancholic aftertaste all over (at least, Something Better gets way, way beyond that). The vocals and the music feel genuinely sad, as if a fun and outgoing person who tries to hide their emotional state, But on the album, the lyrics show everything; it is a "profound and emotional exploration of the many facets of heartbreak" as the band's Bandcamp account states. And it is built with very modern-feeling poetry that can be understood probably worldwide with references to environmentalism among others.

It's Not Comfortable to Grow costs 9.5 EUR (8 GBP).

Oddfellow's Casino - Prince of the Starry Wheel (2022)

It's very weird but this is the first album of one of my favourite artists out there, that I post about about here. I wasn't sure if Oddfellow's Casino and his moody, folk-like avant-garde music fits the blog, but I stopped caring and just went for it. Especially that Prince of the Starry Wheel continues his strike of albums that instantly became my personal classics.

Singer/songwriter David Oddfellow developed his unique and outstanding style that encompasses the folkotronic mix of acoustic instruments and delicate electronic sounds, the use of harmonium (I recommend listening to his podcast album where he describes the origins of his fascination with this instrument) and very moody, folk-inspired lyrics. While his previous album, The Cult of Water, presented a fascinating story-like coherent narration, Prince of... seems to be more all over the place. Although the lyrics-heavy release certainly has a theme of sorts, being "an album of earth, feet, marches, burials and the passing of time" with the title borrowed from William Blake. Another special thing about David Oddfellow is how inteligent his texts are, how many stories they include, how much influence from various places include (they make me think of Neil Gaiman each time and I don't know a better compliment).

While his music certainly has this unique atmosphere, it's fast and flow-rich, more like The Decemberists than Her Name Is Calla if you catch my drift. The lyrics but also the smooth and pop-like engaging music is what makes Oddfellow's Casino one of my favourite artists ever and this is just a humble advertisement of his rich discography to everyone.

Prince of the Starry Wheel costs 9 EUR (7 GBP).

XDZVØNX - MAYKO (2019) EN

Can't hide it, the Wrocław-based XDZVØNX since Spacefest 2018 have their own special place on my playlist. After the brilliant album TAPE_01, the duo is back with an EP called MAYKO.

While on the LP you could say the band balance between folk-inspired electronics and hip-hop, the EP clearly underlines the former. Perhaps it's because xBORAx's vocals reminds me heavily of the ethno music and even if the artist uses spoken word/screaming, she uses this folk-ish voice melody. And then, there's also the song Mayko zelena that sounds absolutely like a deep bass flavoured party in the Eastern Poland.

This combination of the utterly modern music with the East European tradition sounds not only unique but also refreshingly energetic. While I would love to hear more rapping by xSNUFKINx, I have to objectively say, the Polish artists are going in the right direction.

MAYKO  costs 5 EUR (21 PLN).

Janusz Jurga - Hypnowald (2019) EN

Recently on the blog came back Giriu Dvasios with his mixture of dub and folk music and now it's time for his Polish (and way darker) counterpart, new album by Janusz Jurga called Hypnowald.

Actually the artist has his own name for the music he makes - ambient forest techno. And it's very much accurate. Sampled bird hooting, fire cracking and generally unsettling but natural noises of the night forest come forth during the whole album. Four pieces that create a festival of atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing electronic music lined with some limbs-moving basses. Perhaps there's not much of the traditional folk music here (instrumentally and vocally speaking) but it's enough to listen to the third track on the album and get into the folk interpretation of the world that it involves. And finally the more traditional folk is also present in the last song with its ethno-singing. Good stuff.

Hypnowald costs 3 EUR.

Janusz Jurga - Hypnowald (2019) PL

No i jest to całkiem trafione. Zasamplowane pohukiwanie ptaków, trzaskanie ognia i ogólnie niepokojące a naturalne dźwięki nocnego lasu pojawiają się na płycie przez cały czas jej trwania. Cztery kawałki to festiwal klimatycznej i estetycznej elektroniki podbijanej wyraźnym, ruszającym do tańca basem. W końcu i tradycyjny folk dochodzi do głosu dzięki tradycyjnie brzmiącym etno zaśpiewom w części czwartej. Dobry stuff.

Hypnowald kosztuje 10 złotych (3 EUR).

Giriu Dvasios - Aidai (2019) EN

To celebrate the 10th birthday of the project, the Lithuanian producer Girių Davasios comes back to his undoubtedly best album, Ratu. This is where he did what made me fall in love in his music - combined the modern electronics with Lithuanian folk music. Just as he does on his new album, Aidai, that sounds like a direct continuation of Ratu.

It's clear from the very first sounds. Seemingly on a loop samples in the Lithuanian style of "sutartinės", folk songs that are meant to drive into trance, here do so with even higher efficiency. As before, the artist "borrowed" them from the folk band Trys Keturiose, but also thanks to cooperation with the already quite known Obeliją. A certain new thing is on the other hand "normal" vocal in Neskubek, which honestly doesn't sound that great comparing.

But what worked four years ago, works now as well. So the track such as Bitela, Tuto valijo, or Linelius, but first of all those recorded with Obelija. Everything could be both danced to or contemplated.

Aidai costs 6 EUR.

Giriu Dvasios - Aidai (2019) PL

Кроль - Тьма (2017) EN

Darkness is not only a title of the new album by the Russian project called Кроль, darkness is something that pours out of every note of their dark dreampop music. Aided by a range of musicians duo Olga "Jorgan" Roshtchina - Carl "Valerius" Renstalbaldanken serves something between folk and electronic dreampop in a very unnerving shape.

Кроль's music is a mixture of Roshtchina's mesmerizing vocal and super interesting blending of guitars and electronic music. And there's also this dark, slow atmosphere generated by beats and guitar noise polluting the backgrounds. Great effect is also created by cooperation with another vocalist, Julya Nakaryakova in "Как хорошо, что ты не здесь" that shows how easy it is for the artists to make catchy music pieces. But, together with lyrics ("So good you are not here") and dark instrument sounds, it aligns with the atmosphere of the rest of the album.

Another well done trick was to base "Огонь в поле плевел", which sounds like a folk lamentation, on the sound of Chinese folk instrument called hulu. The second part of the album is generally more folk-ish and for some reasons this blending of folk and modern music sounds as if they were born to accompany each other.

"Тьма" kupić można za 24 złote (7 USD).

Кроль - Тьма (2017) PL

Muzyka Кроль to wypadkowa głębokiego, hipnotyzującego wokalu Roszcziny i bardzo ciekawej mieszaniny gitar i elektroniki.

W drugiej części płyty utwory generalnie mają bardziej folkowe zacięcie - i z jakichś powodów taka mieszanina muzyki ludowej i nowoczesnej brzmi jakby były one dla siebie stworzone.

"Тьма" kupić można za 24 złote (7 USD).

Mala Herba - Mala Herba Demo (2017) EN

Zosia Hołubowska is not an anonymous person on the Polish off music stage (Wilcze Jagody I posted about in the fall) nor in the queer community. Last October, this time as Mala Herba, she released an album that is probably my favourite blend of Polish folk and electronic music (next to the legendary Grzegorz z Ciechowa). And it's only a demo.

The folk music is not a coincidence here, for the artist, it is a tribute "to her mom, her grandmothers, and their powerful female ancestors" and made for "witches, sluts, and trouble-makers". It has a lot of this mystical atmosphere so often attributed to the village shaman women who brewed love potions. And not to be forgotten - they were the most emancipated women of their times.

The album juxtaposes not only the powerful women of different times but also traditional folk music and a range of modern, more or less offstream genres. Apart from the with-like vocals, the album offers mesmerizing electronics ("Lament gets a heart from me here) and in some way cold-wave atmosphere as it's quite often that only a bassline accompanies the vocalist in minimalist compositions. And the lyrics? As in the big majority of folk songs, it's mostly about love. Rarely one with happy-ending (just listen closely to "Lament") but there's also a lot about folk myths ("Rusałki") or traditions ("Kupały"). For non Polish speakers, Hołubowska offers some explanations on her Bandcamp account.

Mala Herba's demo can be yours for 5 EUR.

Mala Herba - Mala Herba Demo (2017) PL

A przecież to dopiero demo.

Oprócz wiedźmowatych wokali, album bogaty jest w hipnotyzującą elektronikę ("Lament" dostaje ode mnie tutaj serduszko) i w pewien sposób zimnofalową atmosferę bo często to gitara basowa towarzyszy wokalistce w dość minimalistycznych aranżacjach.  A teksty?

Kliknij tutaj, by wyświetlić tego posta.

Jednak najciekawszym utworem jest bez wątpienia "The Wheel (Sohn)", w którym spotykamy inspiracje rosyjskim folkiem wplątane w elektroniczną pajęczynę i współgrające z niepokojącym tekstem.

Mówi to wiele o mistycznej atmosferze całego albumu.

"Dyḗus" dostępny jest w ofercie "płać-ile-chcesz".

Soledad Vélez - Run With Wolves (2013) EN

I was invited last year to She's The Fest - a small club-based festival in Valencia of feminist nature - the only way to perform was to be a female artist or at least a band with femal vocalist. Genre-wise it was difficult to classify, similarly, the artists were of various level of fame (Belako is somewhat popular in Spain for example).

But for me the biggest discovery, undoubtedly, was Vélez. The asrtist comes from Chile and you can  get it from her lyrics. All in all, it is poetic indie electro-rock with synthesizers, ukulele, vibraphone and whatnot. But the thing you'll notice at first is Soledad's manner of singing - some will love it, some hate but it's difficult to be neutral. For me it's a perfect summer off festival line up addition.

And come on, this girl's name means "solitude", how awesome is that?

"Run With Wolves" was recorded and mixed in Rio Bravo Estudio, Valencia.

Soledad Vélez - Run With Wolves (2013) PL

Rok temu zostałem zaproszony na She's The Fest - niewielki studyjny festiwal z zacięciem feministycznym w Walencji.

"Run With Wolves" nagrano i zmiksowano w Rio Bravo Estudio w Walencji.
