North Arch Rising - 1/3(c) (2017) EN

North Arch Rising, solo project by Chris Harrington of Essex, is a combination of piano keys haunted by post-rock atmosphere and mystic aura. From the project's name and the general idea up to the music itself, everything suggests that there's much more to it than just sounds.

"1/3(c)" is the third part of a trilogy ornamented with the same graphics and name and it crowns the whole, over two hours long whole. Harrington's music is mysterious and seductive. It combines compositions played on piano with ambient backgrounds and good dose of drums. Some of the tracks are some kind of introductions to another ones that, like e.g. "≈" leave strong impression of being both complex and full of dense ambiance. 

NAR's music has a lot of cinematic pathos, it's not surprising that some of them were used in documentaries made by BBC. I would love to see "1/3(c)" being played during a long time lapsed shot somewhere cold and dark where there is snow under your feet and auroras over your head.

North Arch Rising, solowy projekt Chrisa Harringtona z Essex, to wariacja na temat klawiszy pianina opętanych post-rockowym klimatem i aurą mistycyzmu. Począwszy od nazwy przez pomysł na projekt po muzykę - wszystko skłania do refleksji, czy za tymi dźwiękami nie kryje się coś dużo, dużo większego.

"1/3(c)" to trzecia część tryptyku zdobionego tą sama nazwą i grafiką wieńcząca ponad dwugodzinną całość. Muzyka proponowana przez Harringtona jest tajemnicza i uwodzicielska. Łączy w sobie kompozycje na pianino z ambientowym tłem i solidną dawką perkusji. Część utworów to muzyczne pejzaże przygrywające reszcie, która, jak m.in. "≈" robi spore wrażenie dojrzałością i nastrojem.

Muzyka NAR ma w sobie dużo filmowego rozmachu, nic dziwnego, że kilka z jego utworów wykorzystywane były w dokumentach BBC. Jeśli chodzi o "1/3(c)" to widziałbym ją w time-lapsowym ujęciu z jakiegoś mroźnego i mrocznego miejsca, gdzie pod nogami leży śnieg, a nad głowami tańczą zorze.

Diamond Gloss - Primavera (2016) EN

Diamond Gloss is a Portuguese producer and multi-instrumentalist Gonçalo Pereira, on his newest album supported by violinist Maria do Mar (Maria of the Sea, isn't it beautiful?). Pereira is influenced by the whole range of great musicians - from composers (Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki) and ambient legends (Brian Eno) up to post-rock magicians (Sigur Rós, Hammock). And his album from October 2016 is my great ambient-classical-electronic discovery. And a magical one.

"Primavera" ("spring") sounds like a delight over the mysterious reality around us, played on piano and strings and a whole variety of electronic noises. "The sound is more organic [than on DG's previous works]" and feels like a walk in the Portuguese countryside. And there's quite a lot of other references to movement - except for songs' titles, we can hear steps, doors being opened or some unidentified primitive vehicles. Long story short - a journey of emotions.

Diamond Gloss - Primavera (2016) PL

Diamond Gloss to portugalski producent i multi-instrumentalista Gonçalo Pereira, na najnowszej płycie wspomagany przez skrzypaczkę Marię do Mar (Maria z Morza, czy to nie piękne?). Pereira inspiruje się całą gamą wielkich muzyków od kompozytorów (Arvo Pärt i Henryk Górecki), przez wirtuozów ambientu (Brian Eno) po czarodziei post-rocka (Sigur Rós, Hammock). A jego płyta z połowy zeszłego roku to moje wielkie odkrycie ambientowo-klasyczne-elektroniczne i po prostu magiczne.

"Primavera" ("wiosna") brzmi jak zachwyt nad tajemnicami rzeczywistości wokół nas zagrany na pianinie i smykach oraz całej palecie elektronicznych efektów. Dźwięk jest "zdecydowanie bardziej [od wcześniejszych płyt DG] organiczny", jak spacer po zamglonej portugalskiej prowincji. Zresztą odwołań do ruchu jest wiele - poza tytułami utworów, na płycie usłyszeć można dużo kroków, otwieranych drzwi czy jakichś niezidentyfikowanych prymitywnych środków transportu. Jednym słowem - emocjonalna podróż.

Isahi - Nisahilism (2016) EN

Nihilism - a belief that there is no reason for existence, a state that is perfect to scream it out to the world. Which is what Isahi - a one person project from South Korea, exactly does. "The rift between my world and this world completes my Nihilism, and this album is the stories of that" he writes. And since it's Isahi's nihilism it could only be called nisahilism.

The album begins with sounds of quite classical strings that made me think of Asian violinists' music enriched with some electronic. And this feeling goes through the whole album and, although they are sometimes only a background for some heavier sounds, they definitely give a unique flavour to the whole thing. And so the album flows - nice drifting strings and dreamy keys and an unsettling noise in the background. Which already in "The Plague" turns into roaring guitars and everything transforms from a dream into a real nightmare. The whole Isahi's nihilism is a mixture of dreaming and being lost in nightmares.

And I proclaim "Eating Bodies Together" the most romantic song title of 2016.

Isahi - Nisahilism (2016) PL

Nihilizm - przeświadczenie o braku celowości istnienia, stan, który nadaje się jak nic innego by wykrzyczeć go światu. Isahi - jednoosobowy projekt z Korei Południowej właśnie to robi. "Wyrwa między tym światem a światem moim dopełnia mój nihilizm i ten album właśnie o tym opowiada" pisze Koreańczyk. A że jest to nihilizm Isahiego siłą rzeczy nazywać się musi nisahilizmem.

Płytę otwierają całkiem klasyczne dźwięki smyczków przywodzące na myśl podbarwione elektroniką wyczyny azjatyckich skrzypków. I to wrażenie nie znika przez cały album, mimo że często są one jedynie podkładem pod cięższe nuty, nadają całości charakterystycznego brzmienia. I tak płynie sobie ta płyta - przyjemnie dryftujące smyczki i rozmarzone klawisze, a w tle niepokojący szum. Który już w "The Plague" zamienia się w końcu w charczące gitary, a wszystko zaczyna nagle niepokojąco przekraczać ze snu w koszmar. Cały nihilizm Isahiego to plątanina melodyjnych snów i dramatycznych sennych mar.

A "Eating Bodies Together" dostaje ode mnie nagrodę za najbardziej romantyczny tytuł '16.

April Rain - a melting snowman EP (2016) EN

The ode to the melting snowman is not a typical album by April Rain, who clearly describe itself with plain words that they are a post-rock band from Earth. But this year's EP is a beautiful message played on piano with occasional guitar distortions in backgrounds. The band's intentions are clear, the title of the first track explains everything - "i wrote this instead of a letter".

It's a message filled with melancholia but also with spring - it's this destructive state when the view of people who resurrect after winter only stresses out your pain. When the signs of love pass by ("a melting snowman") and we want things that are not going to happen ("dontclosethedoorandletmein") which we can't even ask for (words I can not say"). And this spring melancholia, so different from the autumn one, can end only when the spring life eventually wins in a violent way ("when birds will break through my chest"). BTW, apparently this feeling affects also the knowledge of English grammar.

"a melting snowman" is a touching prediction of what some of us are going to get through soon, when days are longer and dark thoughts are surprisingly not suitable.

April Rain - a melting snowman EP (2016) PL

Oda do topniejącego bałwana nie jest typową płytą April Rain, którego członkowie sami nazywają się prosto i wymownie: jesteśmy zespołem post-rockowym z planety Ziemia. Tymczasem tegoroczna epka to piękna wiadomość zagrana na pianinie i przesterowanych gitarach gdzieś w tle. Zresztą intencje zespołu są klarowne, pierwszy tytuł pierwszego utworu wszystko wyjaśnia - "I wrote this instead of a letter" ("napisałem to zamiast listu").

Jest to wiadomość pełna melancholii, a jednocześnie niezwykle wiosenna w ten przygniatający sposób, gdy widok odżywających po zimie ludzi jedynie podkreśla twój ból. Kiedy przemijają ślady miłości ("a melting snowman") a my pragniemy rzeczy, które nie mogą się wydarzyć ("dontclosethedoorandletmein"), o które nie możemy nawet poprosić ("words I can not say"). I ta wiosenna melancholia, tak inna od jesiennej, zakończyć może się jedynie, gdy wiosenne życie ostatecznie zwycięży ("when birds will break through my chest"). Najwyraźniej uczucie to zagraża również znajomości gramatyki nawiasem mówiąc.

"a melting snowman" to przejmująca zapowiedź tego, co stanie się udziałem niektórych wśród nas już wkrótce, gdy dni zrobią się dłuższe, a mroczne myśli wydawać się będą zaskakująco nie na miejscu.

Lunae Lumen - The Words Unsaid EP (2015) EN

Does it rain in Mexico? Hmm, apparently it does, at least in Zacatecas, the place where Marta Othero a.k.a. Lunae Lumen comes from. It does a lot indeed. It shouldn’t be a surprise for me as Othero’s music sounds as if the raindrops were falling on a crystal piano keys and that’s the way “The Words Unsaid” was created. Water reflected in a broken mirror as the pianist’s motto says.

The artist comments on the album that it is “a way to close a chapter of her life” and she “made the songs in different moments of her life”. The rainy road from the cover is not a coincidence then as the emotions in the tracks had to traveled a lot before they could be found in the album. So we have a special opportunity to look into a lady from Mexico’s story written in staves. Must do.

Lunae Lumen - The Words Unsaid EP (2015) PL

Czy w Meksyku pada? Hmm, prawdę mówiąc to tak, przynajmniej w Zacatecas skąd pochodzi Marta Othero tworząca jako Lunae Lumen. Nawet sporo. Nie powinno mnie to dziwić bo muzyka Othero brzmi jakby to krople deszczu spadały na klawisze kryształowego pianina i same stworzyły “The Words Unsaid”. Woda odbita w pękniętym zwierciadle - taka jest dewiza pianistki.

Artystka pisze o tej płycie, że to dla niej “zakończenie pewnego rozdziału w życiu”, a utwory pisane były na jego różnych etapach. Deszczowa droga na okładce albumu nie jest więc przypadkiem, emocje zawarte w tych kompozycjach musiały trochę popodróżować by się tu znaleźć. Mamy więc niepowtarzalną okazję zajrzeć do historii pani z Meksyku zapisanej na pięciolinii. Trzeba.

Endless Melancholy - A Quiet Recollection (2016) PL

W tym tygodniu wycieczka na zieloną Ukrainę. Na początek ciężka sprawa - niekończąca się opowieść gdy opowiadasz sobie przeszłość, za którą rwie ci się serce. Melancholia. Niektórzy mają ją we krwi i w kościach ale Endless Melancholy i jego muzyka potrafi wywołać ją i w najoporniejszych. Oleksiy Sakevych pokazuje nam świat wypełniony muzycznymi krajobrazami wygranymi na pianinie. Nie wszystkie są przygniatająco smutne ale to właśnie tak działa melancholia. Piękne wspomnienia smutne są tylko dlatego, że są już tylko wspomnieniami.Kiedy najlepiej smakują (i wspomnienia i płyta)? Tak jak sugeruje sam artysta w utworze numer 10: podczas cichych świtów i szarych zmierzchów.

"A Quiet Recollection", jak wskazuje sama nazwa, jest swoistym The Best Of tego kijowskiego artysty. A było w czym wybierać, bo jego dyskografia jest imponująca i liczy już ponad 20 różnych wydawnictw.

Płytę wydało 1631 Recordings, możecie ją dostać za darmo (chociaż za taką muzykę warto dać coś od siebie).

Endless Melancholy - A Quiet Recollection (2016) EN

This week we travel to Ukraine. To start with - something heavy, a neverending story when you think about the past that makes your heart bleed. Melancholy. Some have it in their blood and in their bones but Endless Melancholy and his music can trigger it even in the most resistant ones. Oleksiy Sakevych shows us the world full of soundscapes played on piano. Not every one of them is crushingly sad but this is how melancholy works. Beautiful memories are sad only because they are already memories. When is the best time for them (for the memories and the music)? As the artist suggests in the track number 10: during quiet dawns and grey twilights.

"A Quiet Recollection", as the name suggests, is a The Best Of compilation of the Kiev-based artist. And there was a lot to choose from as his discography is very long, over 20 albums already.

Alex Kozobolis - Alex Kozobolis (2016) EN

Quite suddenly came autumn, and together with her long, grey days will come too. The days when raindrops sound like unhurried piano music and thoughts slow down their race. Sometimes the days are thought of as utterly sad, sometimes as filled with hope. With sadness comes peace.

The same goes with Alex Kozobolis of London's music. Contemporary classical music with keys and strings sounds either melancholic or peaceful. Or more likely melancholic AND peaceful. On his FB profile the artist publishes photos filled with minimalistic and geometrical architecture while on the cover of his album he emerges from fog. Apparently you can combine the two.

His website is also worth visiting as it swarms with good photographies.

Nadciągnęła nagle jesień, a z nią przyjdą też długie, szare dni, gdy krople deszczu będą jak niespieszne uderzenia w klawisze pianina, a myśli zwolnią gonitwę. Czasem myśli się o tych dniach z bezbrzeżnym smutkiem, czasem z nadzieją. Ze smutkiem przychodzi spokój.

Tak jest z muzyką Aleksa Kozobolisa z Londynu. Współczesna muzyka klasyczna na klawisze i struny brzmi albo melancholijnie albo spokojnie. Albo raczej i tak i tak. Na swoim profilu na FB artysta publikuje zdjęcia wypełnione minimalistyczną i geometryczną architekturą, na okładce swojej płyty wyłania się z mgły. Najwyraźniej da się pogodzić te dwie rzeczy. 

Polecam też jego stronę internetową, która roi się od dobrych fotografii.
