Eveleen - falling rain and the light will take you there (2025)

Seta Respati creates his music as Eveleen and he has been doing it for over ten years now. Still, released last December album is his long-play debut so it's worth celebrating. He says that he "make[s] some noise, some people called it art" and I would be one of those "some people" since the single From Me To You I mentioned in here back in 2018.

I love it when I listen to one-person post-rock projects and am unable to say if it's really done by only one artist. This is the case with the Indonesian artist. His post-rock is delicate and skillfully crafted, it's definitely more about creating small gems of melodies than overwhelming with sound. The relaxing sounds feel like lying down on grass and experiencing the world around you from the safe and content position. The inclusion of piano keys that sound like glockenspiel in my ears, only adds to this feeling, making me think of the most relaxed tracks from Sigur Rós (yes, that's why I like dawn: an ascension the most).

So sit back, relax and get transported to the beautiful soundscapes provided by the talented artist from the far away land of Indonesia.

In Inertia - To Whom It May Concern (2025)

This February, an Indonesian music project In Inertia released their debut album filled with "music that is light on lyrics but rich in instrumental storytelling", situated somewehere on the border of various genres. But all of them are airy and soothing.

The Fitrah Akbar and Annissa Utami duo's work is an ode to reflective music that may or may not be called post-rock or instrumental ambient. The base is the guitar sounds, but, and this is strongly underlined in the band's description, unlike the absolute majority of post-rock music, it is far from being overwhelming or powerful. Or even loud. And unlike all those minority examples of calmer instrumental music I know, it is built on hope and light more than on the melancholia and darkness. It works like a warm bath, like a soothing oil. Every note can light your soul.

Talking about light, as the artists mention, their music is light on lyrics. But when the lyrics and vocals come, the ethereal post-rock momentarily transforms into memorable dream pop, which tells a lot about how airy and calm the music is. And the best example of that must be In Motion, song that is so warm that it can melt anyone's heart. But it's not always about "normal" vocals. The backing, angelic vocals are almost everywhere on the album, creating a misty soundscape that, if I had to compare to something, makes me think of Lights & Motion and his synthy post-rock.

To Whom It May Concern costs 10 USD.

Soulless, Sadness - burning as the first light (2024)

Damián Antón Ojeda, professionally known as Sadness is already a well-known name for any fan looking for the blackgaze scene's underdogs. The Mexican artist releases a number of shorter and longer albums a year and towards the end of 2024, he joined forces with his lesser known, but at least as interesting, Indonesian counterpart, Soulless.

The album is opened by an intro that sound more like a melancholic ambientish piece, but soon enough bursts into Sadness' signature noise. It is made with harsh noise of guitars that is hidden behind the silky flow of piano keys and, finally, vocals. Those are rather fresh-sounding, hopeful, energetic, providing a pleasurable contrast with the music, beautiful in its melancholy. His second track feels like a complementing piece, an ornament underlining the importance of every edge of your name, burning.

The part of the split provided by Soulless has a slightly different taste to it. While it is also a prime example of underground blackgaze music, the vibes are changed: the black metal vocals add the element of anger and depression that, when juxtaposed with the synthy, flowy music, always brings a tear to my eye. The euphoric parts come to the picture in the second track by Soulless and they make the whole blackgazey picture absolutely complete.

burning as the first light costs 4 USD.

Soulless - The Supreme Resurgence (2023)

I've been experiencing a lot of great quality blackgaze music recently. And this week is no different thanks to the Indonesian project Soulless. This year the artist released their fifth album (after 2020's cooperation with Sadness among others) and called it The Supreme Resurgence.

I'm extremely keen on this music genre, especially recently. The shoegaze's flow and blissful atmosphere meeting the pure noise of black metal fits perfectly into my moods. And Soulless definitely nails the genre's requirements with their fast and atmospheric loud music. The artist reaches the very pinnacles of airiness in the synth-heavy compositions like the very fittingly titled Let There Be Dreams. I love how slowly some of the tracks develop from the airy ambients into the massive, monumental passages of loudness and ethereality. One of the best albums within the genre this year, no doubts about it (although it was recorded three years ago).

The Supreme Resurgence costs 7 USD.

Airportradio - Selepas Pendar Nyalang Barbayang (2018) EN

The Indonesian Airportradio creates a genre eclecticism of the best kind, it is what they meant with the name of the project that refers to "the silent mumble one can experiment on an airstrip". The band want to combine in their music "trip-hop, post-rock, dreampop, dark-wave and downtempo influences". How they manage to do so can be found on their new album Selepas Pendar Nyalang Barbayang.

Indeed, the combination is the important characteristic here. The album starts with tracks in which alongside the delicate noise and strings, the crucial roles are played by Benedicta R. Kirana's vocal and thick bassline (especially in the charming Black Pepper). When it seems that the whole album is going to emanate with this subtle, almost acoustic trp-hop, the game is changed by aggressively sounding rap (in The Episodes). We also deal with long and not hasty jazzy moments in Nirmana Warna, noise ones in Letterlijk, or the outro played on violins. The Indonesians make an interesting variation on what trip-hop can look like if it gets rid of the overuse of electronic sounds and instead experiments with live instruments.

Selepas Pendar Nyalang Barbayang costs 4 USD.

Summer Effect - Reverie (2018) EN

Cinematic post-rock that is not bombastic but still has tons of atmosphere? This is the Indonesian project Summer Effect. "Reverie" makes already the fourth album by the band and it is filled with guitars sharing the space with piano keys and strings.

Although it is a typical instrumental album, the artists carry a clear, positive message to the audience, as they state: "Listen carefully to hear this words. They are not there. There are no actual words. But feel the music and you will hear them". If you follow this line of thinking, the lyrics on "Reverie" is a real poetry. The music by the Indonesians is written mostly for the smoothing piano and nerve-wrecking guitar sounds that can be really loud ("Evoking Paradise") but also make a unique atmosphere. So do the strings and they are plenty, as it is fitting for the cinematic music.

When you listen to the album, you can easily guess what kind of "scenes" the tracks should appear in , it's obvious that "Reverie" is a tear-jerking splitting up scene, "Unfeel" the hope's reborn while "Sultry Safari" could make a good track with the movie's best music theme for the closing scene. I'd watch it.

"Reverie" costs 7.99 USD.

Agura Matra - In Silence EP (2017) EN

Our good friend Ben Rammsier comes back with another album with his main project Agura Matra. Dark funeral electronic music from Indonesia is as atmospheric as it was at the beginning of last year, perhaps Rammsier's new music is a good omen for the incoming year?

This time his music is a little bit more lively and almost danceable. You can hardly stay still during the melodic "Runaway Toy" or dark-discotheque'ish (as the title suggests) "The Darkness Dance". As always though, the cosmic-electronic samples and keys sounding like church organs during the last goodbye sound perfect together with the artist's atmospheric voice. And create this combination that is so characteristic of the project.

The dancing mood burns down after a while and it is replaced with songs even more atmospheric. But there's still the melody that is in the foreground, be it in the quiet as a stone grave "In Silence" or sparkling with electronic effects "Fear".

"In Silence" costs 3 USD.

The Trees Strip - Trip To Tibet (2017) EN

"Trip To Tibet" makes a quite deceiving title. According to it, there should be a fair dose of traditional Asian-Tibetan sounds on the album but in reality, it's no mystic, New Age folk. The Trees Strip recorded a really tough but well-balanced post-rock album.

As the post-rock music handbook says, the Indonesians succeed in combining delicate, filled with sadness fragments with those sounding like a guitar storm. The intro inspires awe with the aforementioned folk instruments, "Tibet; 1959" with stron drums creating a fast pace of the track, "Guts Will Take Your Hope" with beautiful keys.

The band promises both, furious emotions with their view on post-rock music and some of the beauty of the Tibetan nature, culture and the country's dark history. You should really experience it on the trip to Tibet together with The Trees Strip.

"Trip To Tibet" costs 3.50 USD.

my violainé morning - Where's My Place to Play (2007) EN

Indonesian underground is always welcome. This time it comes with the shoegaze band from Bandung - my violainé morning. The musicians describe their music as "an expression driven by saturation, isolated, sadness, madness, hope and wishes". That's a lot but also the music is very rich.

It starts with a lively melody in "Morning Angels" but already in "Room Flies" it gets loud with deafening guitars in its final phase, really well suiting the dreamy vocal. Which is something the next track, Mindless Dreams" surprisingly lacks. But it doesn't change how good it is. "99 Miles" is the big come back of the fantastic noise and "Where's My Place to Play" sums the whole thing as it should. The band's main message is saving the environment and reminding people of its importance. Which shows in the cover picture.

Their music is supposed to surprise us with the "vision from another side of this world". So, taking things literally, from here.

"Where's My Place to Play" is available for 3 USD.

:ŁŚ Magazine: Good Night, Listener - an interview with Agura Matra EN

He goes inside your soul with funeral dreampop keys and his sombre voice singing about love. Ben Rammsier a.k.a. Agura Matra comes from Indonesia and brings colours to your bedroom pop. I was able to ask him about those colours, working a night and the loved ones. Terima kasih, Ben!

ŁŚ: Your dark music is contradicted by lively, saturated colours you use as a part of your image. Is it intentional? Which one is your true nature?

AM: I've always liked psychedelic colours, and there's always many things going on inside my head, some different ideas, just like the many colours I put on the image. But it all always become something dark, sometimes darker than I intended to. So I think my true nature is grey. Dark and grey.

When describing your previous album, “Riverland”, you wrote that this is the kind of music you create when you can’t sleep. Is it the way you work? Is working at night what influenced your funeral dreampop?

The album, it's repetitive pattern is heavily influenced by Burzum. The hypnotic nature that I tried to achieve. How it can exhaust the energy of the listener without making them stop listening, and finally put them to sleep. Before I released it, I always listened to it at night. to see its effect. I mostly work at night or when it's quiet around me.

The Cure
What are your favourite artists that influenced you the most? Are there any Indonesian projects you could recommend to us?

Burzum and The Cure. I like the monotonous hypnotic nature of their music. Especially their early albums. It actually saddened me that I can't recommend any band from my country because I'm too introverted to go out and search for something in my surroundings.

You describe “Die With You”, the album, as funeral dreampop and I find this label extremely fitting. Where did this mix of gothic mood and electronic melodies come from?

The songs from "Die With You" are actually some of the old material I wrote in my younger years. It's a mix of different styles that I attempted to harmonize and I am quite satisfied with the dark and lo-fi sounds on it.

I love the way you have your style but you can make every song unique with its own pace and melody. Is it something you focus on or is the overall atmosphere more important for you?

The overall atmosphere is important to me. Also what's the right way to begin and end the album. It came from old materials over the years so it got mixed styles. Each is different.

“Die With You” is such a beautiful song. How was it created? Was it meant for someone in particular?

It came to my mind after I was thinking of the loved ones. How we always want to be with them, taking care of them until the end of our lives. Rather possessive, really.

Almost forgot about the name of your project. Does it mean anything in Indonesian?

It's an abbreviation of my name, Agung Rama Putra. "Agura" also means meditating, deep thinking. "Matra" is material, the world we live in, our lives. So it can mean to be aware, awaken, always think before do. Well, sort of. At least that's what's came to my mind when I chose the name.

You can read more about "Die With You" here. Check out also Agura Matra's Facebook and Bandcamp!

The Rights - Di Dalam Fana EP (2017) EN

The Rights, another good Indonesian exotic flower in the botanic garden of the off music. What's in this country that it gives us so much beautiful and moody music? The project is the solo creation, what the author likes to underline, of Luthfi Pradita of Jakarta and gives us dark post-rock that makes us anxious instead of inspiring awe and force to look around nervously instead of relaxing.

If I translate the album's title correctly, it means "In Transition". And the song titles are interesting too - we have Malaysian for "Be There" ("Menjadi Ada") and "Happy in Paralysis" ("Bahagia Dalam Lumpuh") and finally the composition closing and referring to the first track - "Be No" ("Menjadi Tiada"). Behind them, there is particularly consistent post-rock with droning backgrounds and beautiful keys but also clear-sounding guitars and vocals (in the English-titled "Light") that do not mess anything up.

The whole work by Pradita is very consistent and well-thought-out. The graphics on the album match the music in the best way possible so that its immersive potential is even bigger. And they are very dark too.

"Di Dalam Fana" costs 7 USD.

Annie Hall - Saudade EP (2016) EN

I have just written about the unrepeatable shoegaze of the 90s and there's already an example of what the inspiration of the decade can create. Annie Hall is a music collective of musicians from lesser known Jakarta underground bands, who fascinated by "fuzzy, heavy and dreamy guitar riff with soften low-end vocal" created their own reply to the shoegaze from two decades before.

Their music is characterized by slow pace that is not being disturbed by really loud guitars. And it is  only supported by extremely atmospheric voice of Bintoro Joyo, which sounds as if he wanted to deny the proposition that only female voices make good, airy, dreampop vocals. And he's great at it. All sorts of inspirations by the classics are visible in Annie Hall's music - as for example in "Hollow" in which the characteristic "trumpets" at the track's end remind of the great MBV from "Loveless".

"Saudade"is published by Héma Records, it costs 5 USD.

Agura Matra - Die With You (2016) EN

Hardly ever do I reach so distant musical areas as Indonesia. Which is a mistake. It's a country with a good number of alternative projects (e.g. this week I listen to the debute EP by Annie Hall). Another example is Agung Rama Putra known as Agura Matra who describes his job in a simple way - "I manipulate sounds". And he knows what he does.

Lively backgrounds of almost dance-like samples wonderfully contrast with melancholic, dreampop vocal. It sounds best in "Good Night" in which great airy keys play their role too, or in, perhaps the best track of the album, "Daggers and Horns" where everything matches everything as if it never were separate sounds. The album is filled with aspiring hits up to the end ("Good Night", "Die With You"!) with all of them equipped with heavy church- or even funeral-like keys that build the melodies.

"Die With You" is available for 3 USD.
