Monochromatic Visions - Change Who You Are (2025)

It's only four tracks, but when something is that good, who cares? I have mentioned the British band a couple of times before and it's no surprise as their music makes a perfect blend of the noisy and the melodic. It was proven on their new EP.

Shoegaze, new wave, pop music. They all have their place within this short release. The music here feels light and unbelievably catchy, but there is a hint of a darker atmosphere and the omnipresent noise somewhere in the backgrounds, like something you catch with the corner of your eye but can't really focus your sight on. All for compositions are worth checking out, including the most poppy one, the first song of the album, I Told You. And frankly, I like it the most, probably because it's as catchy as it can be, a candidate for a summer hit within the noisier offstream world.

Monochromatic Visions - REFORM (2022)

Five years ago, the London-based Monochromatic Visions released their self-titled debut EP and thus debuted also on my blog. Now, one album and five years later, it's time for their second long play called REFORM.

Unlike the title of the album suggests, there's not much reformation in the duo's music: it's still all about the post-punk's legacy filtered by a healthy dose of psychedelic noise. It feels cold with very audible bass lines encapsulated by very noisy guitars. On top of that, the vocals are situated and those are so very much in the line of post-punk genre. Also, the compositions are usually quite short, another inspiration from the punk's subgenres. Recorded during the pandemics, the release's "themes explore the process of untethering from the past to evolve and reform into a better version of one’s self", so well noticeable in Lost: "lost inside/ found outside/ past accept/ craft your time". And it does sound super optimistic for the coldwave music but I guess even post-punkers want to feel loved.

Monochromatic Visions - Monochromatic Visions (2017) EN

Monochromatic Visions is one of those projects that, according to my ears, is really good at combining the shoegaze density with a plain message of coldwave. Already the project's name seems to suggest it with its visions experienced in black and white.

The Greeks use in their music the clear bass of coldwave and monumental guitar background from shoegaze and there is also the vocal that itself combines both genres. The album sounds like a perfect garage gig that forces you to have fun but also to lose yourself in thought a little bit.

The opening "Deep" is a simple message with a rhythmical background and a spectacular finish. "Secret Gardens (DIV)" on the other hand is a bit dreamy ballad ended with a solid rhythm of "Synesthimy" and dissolving in air, melancholic "Untitled For Now".

Monochromatic Visions to jeden z tych projektów, który w moich uszach niezwykle udanie łączy duszność shoegaze'u z prostym przekazem zimnej fali. Już sama nazwa projektu zdaje się to sugerować z wizjami przeżywanymi w czerni i bieli.

W muzyce Grecy stawiają na wyraźny bas z coldwave'u i pokaźne gitarowe tło shoegaze'u, a do tego wokal, który spaja oba gatunki. Płyta brzmi jak idealny garażowy koncert, przy którym należy się dobrze bawić, a jednocześnie można się trochę zadumać. 

Otwierający ją "Deep" to prosty przekaz z rytmicznym tłem, niezwykle efektownie zakończony. "Secret Gardens (DIV)" to trochę senna ballada zakończona solidnym rytmem "Synesthimy" i rozpływającym się w eterze, melancholijnym "Untitled For Now".
