Drifting Anchors - Decadence (2017) EN

Angry and raging like three hundred knives project by Norwegian artist Stig Erklev. It's around for two years now but I encountered it just now. And I'm in awe. It's difficult to find a kind of music that fits better some particular states of mind.

I've been listening to "Mediocre at Best" for some weeks now because besides this great energy the Norwegian releases, his compositions have also this difficult to describe melodic and, what is even more important to me, nostalgic nature. For me, Erklev's anger is more this kind of anger that is expressed through tears, the one that is a result of depression, sadness as the last stand of sanity. But maybe it's just me.

The album is well balanced. Apart for "Mediocre..." the other tracks that deserve our attention are an ultra fast "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" and surprisingly delicate interlude in "Swallow".

Wściekły i zadziorny jak trzysta noży projekt norweskiego artysty Stiga Erkleva. Ma już co prawda dwa lata ale natrafiłem na niego dopiero teraz i jestem urzeczony. Ciężko znaleźć lepszą muzykę dla niektórych stanów umysłu.

Sam zasłuchuję się od kilku tygodni w "Mediocre at Best" bo oprócz niesamowitej energii wyzwalanej przez Norwega, jego kompozycje mają w sobie także trudną do opisania melodyjność oraz, co nie mniej ważne, melancholię. Dla mnie złość Erkleva to bardziej złość przez łzy, taka, która wynika z depresji, ze smutku, niczym ostatni bastion zdrowia. Ale może to tylko ja.

Płyta jest równa. Poza "Mediocre..." na uwagę zaskakują ultra szybki "Hook and Sinker", "Sunshine" i zaskakująco łagodny muzyczny przerywnik - "Swallow".

Afformance - Through Walls (2015) EN

“The wind! The fire! The sea! The volcanoes! The animals! The city! The laughter! The cries! The breath! The heartbeat!” - whatever you may think, it’s not fragment of a new movie about the adventures of Captain Planet, it’s a list of the phenomena that inspire the main characters of this post - the post-rocking wizards from Athens, Afformance. Already the first track is a whole story played on guitar riffs, a story of a man who experienced epiphany which led to his act of faith (Actus Fidei) and as a result fell up into the skies. Did it happen when facing death? Or is it something we all experience during our everyday so-called lives? The next songs are equally enigmatic. Cordyceps - a type of fungi that parasite and eventually decompose insects and other small animals, savants - a phenomenon when someone who is mentally challenged is also pure genius in some way (“Rain Man” anyone?) and finally the mysterious Mr Bennet - the only thing I made up from it is Stede Bonnet, a “gentleman pirate” who terrorized the Caribbean Sea on his Revenge in 18th century. Everything here is mysterious but in the end, what would post-rock be without mystery?

Even the band’s name is interesting. Could it mean some kind of mixture of affair and romance? Isn’t it the same? Do they add up to some kind of super-romance everyone dreams of?

Anyway, Afformance dress those mysteries into a beautiful form of guitar post-rock similarly as Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai do. Long, succinct compositions with occasional radio recordings, energetic accelerations and almost disco-like spontaneity (“Dancing Lessons…”). It’s this kind of music that goes through walls, be them the ones between the world and your soul or between you and your irritated neighbours.

Wiatr! Ogień! Morze! Wulkany! Zwierzęta! Miasto! Śmiech! Zawodzenia! Oddech! Tętno serca! To wbrew pozorom nie jest cytat z kontynuacji przygód Kapitana Planety - to lista fenomenów inspirujących bohaterów dzisiejszego wpisu - post-rockowych czarodziei z Aten, Afformance. Już pierwszy utwór to cała historia zagrana na riffach - historia człowieka doznającego objawienia i składającego akt wiary (Actus Fidei) by w rezultacie spaść prosto w niebiosa. Czyżby działo się to na łożu śmierci? A może spotyka nas to  w codziennym, tak zwanym, życiu? Kolejne ścieżki są równie zagadkowe. Cordyceps, po polsku “maczużnik” (czy nie pięknie?) to rodzaj grzybów pasożytujących i w efekcie rozkładających owady i małe kręgowce, Savants (zespół Sawanta) to zjawisko, gdy osoba niepełnosprawna umysłowo jest jednocześnie genialna w jakiejś dziedzinie (“Rain Man” anyone?), czy w końcu tajemniczy pan Bonnet - jedyne do czego doszedłem to Stede Bonnet, pirat-dżentelmen grasujący na Karaibach w XVIII wieku na swojej Zemście. Wszystko to jest bardzo tajemnicze ale czym byłby post-rock bez tajemnicy?

Zresztą nazwa zespołu sama w sobie jest ciekawa. Czyżby chodziło o kombinację romansu i… romansu (“romance” i “affair”)? Jest jakaś różnica? Czy razem daje to super-romans, taki którego każdy z nas pragnie?

Tak czy inaczej, Afformance ubiera te tajemnice w gitarowy post-rock spod znaku Explosions In The Sky i Mogwai, w długie, pełne treści kompozycje poprzetykane okazjonalnymi nagraniami z radia, energetycznym depnięciem i niemal dyskotekową żywiołowością (“Dancing Lessons…”). To taka muzyka, która przenika przez ściany - zarówno te między światem a twoją duszą jak i te między tobą a twoimi poirytowanymi sąsiadami.

Ich wcześniejszy, świetny “Affection” można mieć za darmo, “Through Walls” kosztuje 23 złote (5 EUR).

Snow In Mexico - Prodigal Summer EP (2015) EN

There’s a certain rule of the offstream music I want to share with you at the beginning of this post - namely, if there’s a geographical name in a band’s name, the band is most certainly (almost) NOT from the city/country/region mentioned. Architecture of Helsinki is from Australia, We Are From Barcelona from Sweden, Murmansk comes from Helsinki of Finland, Lost In Kiev from Paris of France, Krakovia is Spanish and Icelandic Elephants Russian. There are a couple of exceptions (hmm… Joensuu 1685, Gas Of Latvia, our Polish Myslovitz) but the trend is noticeable and quite astonishing. We all dream of other places. There’s hardly any point in adding that Snow In Mexico is not from Mexico actually. They are from The Eternal City or, as sometimes called, “the Suburbs of the Vatican City” (via The Young Pope). But they’re worth mentioning at the end of the Mexican Week.

Indeed, delicate vocals and dense but also very slow music remind of this prodigal summer when you wanted to do so many things but ended up lying on grass and looking up at the sky and you figured that this is the thing that makes you feel good. This is the music for those tiny glimpses of the sunny being lazy in the greyness of today’s November. Is this the trace of Mexico in our everyday autumn life? Don’t those warm moments in comparison to the mood and weather of this season sound extremely nonsensically, just like this snow in Mexico? Yes, those things are probably true but I find it difficult to focus on them as I’m listening to SIM.

Jest pewna zasada muzyki alternatywnej, którą chciałbym na początku tego wpisu wyłożyć - jeśli w nazwie zespołu zawarte jest jakieś geograficzne miano, zespół z całą (niemal) pewnością nie pochodzi z tego miasta/kraju/regionu. Architecture of Helsinki są z Australii, We Are From Barcelona ze Szwecji, Murmansk z fińskich Helsinek, Lost In Kiev z francuskiego Paryża, Krakovia jest hiszpańska a Icelandic Elephants rosyjskie. Jest naturalnie kilka wyjątków (hmm, Joensuu 1685, Gas Of Latvia, Myslovitz?) ale trend jest zauważalny i zachwycający. Wszyscy marzymy o innych miejscach. Nie trzeba więc wiele dodawać by zorientować się, że Snow In Mexico z Meksyku nie są. Są z Wiecznego Miasta nazywanego “przedmieściami Watykanu” (via The Young Pope) ale warto im się przyjrzeć na zakończenie Tygodnia Meksykańskiego.

Delikatność wokali i gęsta, choć powolna warstwa muzyczna rzeczywiście przypomina tytułowe zmarnotrawione lato, na które miałeś tyle planów ale zdecydowałeś się leżeć na trawie i patrzeć w chmury i odkryłeś, że to właśnie cię uszczęśliwia. To jest muzyka do tych właśnie namiastek słonecznego nicnierobienia w te szarugowe dni listopada. Czy to właśnie jest ten ślad Meksyku w naszej jesiennej codzienności? Czy te właśnie chwile ciepłego lenistwa nie brzmią w kontraście do nastroju i pogody za oknem równie niedorzecznie do śnieg w Meksyku? Tak, pewnie te przemyślenia są prawdziwe ale przy tej muzyce ciężko się na nich skupić.

Lunae Lumen - The Words Unsaid EP (2015) EN

Does it rain in Mexico? Hmm, apparently it does, at least in Zacatecas, the place where Marta Othero a.k.a. Lunae Lumen comes from. It does a lot indeed. It shouldn’t be a surprise for me as Othero’s music sounds as if the raindrops were falling on a crystal piano keys and that’s the way “The Words Unsaid” was created. Water reflected in a broken mirror as the pianist’s motto says.

The artist comments on the album that it is “a way to close a chapter of her life” and she “made the songs in different moments of her life”. The rainy road from the cover is not a coincidence then as the emotions in the tracks had to traveled a lot before they could be found in the album. So we have a special opportunity to look into a lady from Mexico’s story written in staves. Must do.

Lunae Lumen - The Words Unsaid EP (2015) PL

Czy w Meksyku pada? Hmm, prawdę mówiąc to tak, przynajmniej w Zacatecas skąd pochodzi Marta Othero tworząca jako Lunae Lumen. Nawet sporo. Nie powinno mnie to dziwić bo muzyka Othero brzmi jakby to krople deszczu spadały na klawisze kryształowego pianina i same stworzyły “The Words Unsaid”. Woda odbita w pękniętym zwierciadle - taka jest dewiza pianistki.

Artystka pisze o tej płycie, że to dla niej “zakończenie pewnego rozdziału w życiu”, a utwory pisane były na jego różnych etapach. Deszczowa droga na okładce albumu nie jest więc przypadkiem, emocje zawarte w tych kompozycjach musiały trochę popodróżować by się tu znaleźć. Mamy więc niepowtarzalną okazję zajrzeć do historii pani z Meksyku zapisanej na pięciolinii. Trzeba.

A Shelter In The Desert - Pequeñas Hiroshimas (2015) EN

In the middle of Polish November, when it's not only rain that goes down but all of our hopes go there too, let's go to sunny Mexico. As people are supposed to do. And let's check if it's possible to make music that pours from every part of the Icelandic landscape while being surrounded by flowers, fruit and sunshine. Spoiler alert: it is.

A Shelter In The Desert is a band that plays music because they love it (as they say on their Bandcamp account). They come from Mexico City, the third biggest urban agglomeration in the world - a place that couldn't be more different from Ólafur Arnalds' whipped by wind island (coincidentally, Ólafur is one of the band's music inspiration). But their music is equally good. But louder. Because ASITD plays post-rock in which there's no place for melancholic background humming - more like the fast pulse of drums and clear, catchy melodies. Or delicate sounds of piano that steal attention just like the Mexican flowers from the album's cover.

It's not a surprise that "Pequeñas Hiroshimas" (small Hiroshimas) deals with everyday explosions we are the victims of when our life treats us with everything but love (and now everybody thinks of an example of their recent Little Boy). But "todo podrá estallar, pero siempre habrá una adelfa que nacerá de entre los escombros" - everything may explode yet still there's always a rosebay that grows out of the ruins. An optymistic post-rock from the land of sun.

A Shelter In The Desert - Pequeñas Hiroshimas (2015) PL

W środku polskiego listopada, gdy oprócz deszczu pada również chęć do czegokolwiek, wybierzmy się w podróż do słonecznego Meksyku. Tak jak się to powinno robić. Sprawdźmy czy będąc otoczonym kwiatami, owocami i słonecznym światłem można tworzyć muzykę, która na takiej Islandii wylewa się z każdego elementu krajobrazu. Mały spoiler: da się.

A Shelter In The Desert to zespół, który gra muzykę ponieważ kocha to robić jak piszą na swoim bandcampowym koncie. Pochodzą ze stolicy Meksyku, trzeciej największej aglomeracji świata, a więc z miejsca tak dalekiego od mierzwionej wiatrem wyspy Ólafura Arnaldsa jak to tylko możliwe (Ólafura, którego, dodajmy, wymieniają wśród swoich inspiracji). Lecz ich muzyka jest jednakowo dobra. Choć głośniejsza. Bo ASITD grają post-rocka, w którym nie ma miejsca na melancholijne szumy w tle, a jest sporo dla szybkiego pulsu perkusji i wyraźnych, chwytliwych melodii. Albo też dla delikatnych klawiszy, które kradną uwagę niczym te meksykańskie kwiaty na okładce albumu.

Nie jest niespodzianką, że "Pequeñas Hiroshimas" (małe Hiroshimy) opowiada o codziennych eksplozjach, których jesteśmy ofiarami, gdy życie traktuje nas w mało uprzejmy sposób (i tutaj każdy przypomina sobie swojego własnego niedawnego Little Boya). Ale "todo podrá estallar, pero siempre habrá una adelfa que nacerá de entre los escombros" - wszystko może wybuchać jednak z ruin zawsze narodzi się oleander. Optymistyczny post-rock z krainy słońca.

Clouds Collide - All Things Shining (2015) PL

Kiedy mówię, że najsmutniejszą porą roku jest dla mnie wiosna, delikatnie mówiąc nie spotykam się ze zrozumieniem. A tymczasem Chris Pandolfo znany jako Clouds Collide brzmi jak ktoś kto by mnie zrozumiał. Bo kiedy powinna tak naprawdę dopadać melancholia jak nie w czasie ogólnoświatowego wybuchu życia i miłości? Kiedy ty je straciłeś i zastanawiasz się czy ludzie wokół tylko udają radość. Czy radość to jest w ogóle coś, co ma prawo mieć swoją nazwę?

Pandolfo widzi to pisząc na Bandcampie, że "All Things Shining" to płyta "o wzlotach i upadkach w czasie przeżywania straty (...) i jak poprzednie powiązana jest z porami roku, które przynoszą ze sobą wspomnienia. Tym razem jest to wiosna". Słychać to w świetlistej muzyce, która napotyka na swojej drodze wściekłe growle i smutne wokale, całkiem jak człowiek, którego myśli nie przystają do wiosennego cudu. Nigdy. Czy to podziwiając chmury czy ciesząc się każdym promieniem słońca czy nadciągającym niekończącym się ciepłem.

Artysta rodem z Pennsylwanii ubiera ten konflikt w przejmującą muzykę.

Clouds Collide - All Things Shining (2015) EN

When I claim that the saddest season in my opinion is spring, people don't seem to understand. However, Chris Pandolfo, known as Clouds Collide sounds like a person who could get it. Because when should melancholy strike if not in the time of this worldwide explosion of life and love? When you had lost those and wonder if people around you don't just fake being happy. If happiness is actually a phenomenon that has right to have a name?

Pandolfo sees it as he writes on his Bandcamp that "All Things Shining" "deals with the ups and downs of overcoming loss and once again is hugely influenced by nostalgic connections with the seasons and the memories that may come along with them, this time the season being Spring". You can hear it in his bright music that collides with angry growls and sad vocals - just like a man whose thoughts don't match the spring miracle. Never. When admiring the clouds or enjoying every ray of light or the incoming start of eternal warmth.

The Pennsylvania based artist shows the conflict with piercing music.

The Best Pessimist - The Half​-​World (2015) EN

The best pessimist comes from Odessa, Ukraine and looks as if he started doing his music when he got bored with symphonic metal riffs. Or viking reconstruction. Or modelling. His name is Sergey Lunev, his band consists of three other musicians, and they all combine piano with clearly electronic ambient with post-rock elements. And every one of the elements is extremely noticeable.

Lunev's inspirations include The American Dollar, French Teen Idol and Mono, although the last one maybe just for their mysticism in music. And this music tells the stories about broken hearts and goodbyes - you can feel it in every note, every beat and every sudden silence. Now you should put a long black coat on and go out with TBP's music in your ears into the autumn darkness. And try not to think too much.

I hope I will meet his music in my dreams tonight.

The Best Pessimist - The Half​-​World (2015) PL

Najlepszy pesymista pochodzi z Odessy na Ukrainie i wygląda jakby za ambient zabrał się przypadkiem, gdy znudziły mu się symfoniczno-metalowe ostre riffy. Albo wikińska rekonstrukcja. Albo modelling. Nazywa się Siergiej Łunew,a  towarzyszy mu trzech muzyków, którzy wszyscy łączy grę na pianinie z mocno elektronicznym ambientem i elementami post-rocka. I wszystko to bardzo, bardzo wyraźnie słychać.

Inspiracje Łunewa obejmują The American Dollar, French Teen Idol i Mono, chociaż ci ostatni to chyba za mistyczną atmosferę zawartą w muzyce. A muzyka ta opowiada o złamanych sercach i rozstaniach, można to poczuć w każdej nutce, w każdym elektronicznym bicie czy niespodziewanej ciszy. Należy teraz ubrać długi czarny płaszcz i wyjść z muzyką TBP na uszach w nasz polski jesienny mrok. I starać się za dużo nie myśleć.  

Mam nadzieję, że spotkam się z jego muzyką dziś w nocy we śnie.

:NOTGEESE: Rainy Summer - Koniec lata (2015) EN

Summer's long gone (the album name translates as "Summer's End") and when it was still here, it wasn't particularly rainy. But still, the album fits this time now better than any other. Adam and Piotr from Stargard gave us the most autumn-ish from the summer-ish albums. It's perfect for this time when summer's energy slowly turns into autumn melancholy and drags the guitar post-metal into ultra sad shoegaze. There's no place for Lush's candy-like melodies - metal clouds of guitars dominate the landscape with occasional, just like the grey sun in the sky, glimpse of whispering growling - if this phrase is not a blasphemy of some sort.

When you check their YouTube you can find their cover of Mgła - Polish black metal legend. Not only couldn't be the metal band's name more suitable for RS's lore (mgła means "fog") but Mgła in more post- than black-metal version sounds perfect.

But the point is that throughout the whole album you can feel rain and it's wonderful.

:NIEGĘSI: Rainy Summer - Koniec lata (2015) PL

Lata już dawno nie ma. A gdy jeszcze trwało nie było chyba specjalnie deszczowe. A mimo to ta płyta pasuje teraz jak nigdy. Adam i Piotr ze Stargardu zaserwowali najbardziej jesienną letnią płytę. Najbardziej pasuje tam, gdzie letnia energia powoli zamienia się w jesienną melancholię i ciągnie gitarowy post-metal w stronę przesmutnego shoegaze'u. Nie ma tu miejsca na cukierkowe podrygi Lush - dominują metalowe chmury gitar, zza których czasem, jak szare słońce na niebie, przebija szepczący growl. Jeśli to określenie nie jest jakimś świętokradztwem.

Na YouTube'ie usłyszeć można jak RS coveruje Mgłę - legendarny polski zespół blackmetalowy. Nie dość, że nazwa metalowców jak nic pasuje do lore'u RS to jeszcze Mgła w bardziej post- niż black-metalowej wypada wspaniale.

A przede wszystkim, przez całą płytę na wskroś słychać deszcz i to jest piękne.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) EN

The compass with a violin key needle says: "north". This week Sweden. Rich not only with pagan black metal and blonde pop stars, trust me. To break the ice (accordingly to the geographical location) - Anna von Hausswolff and her band. A unique character of the Swedish music scene, just like Karin Dreijer,  erratic like Antony Hegarty, aerial like Kate Bush. A gothic songwriter who performs in churches and sings about love with the devil. The gothic part of her is perfectly audible everywhere in her works. Worrisome pop, dreadful folk, rock&roll played on church organs - that's what she sounds like.

"The Miraculous" shows a questionable miraculousness. It's as miraculous as a possessed girl who walks the walls, as a stone angel opening his eyes, as Madonna's bloody tears. Miracles, no doubt, but are they miraculous? I don't know. The album is epic where it should be, funeral-like and claustrophobic in other places. And above the sounds of the Addams Family orchestra planes von Hausswolff's both strong and airy vocal.

House wolf? Actually yes - a beautiful and domesticated black mass.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) PL

Kompas z kluczem wiolinowym zamiast igły wskazuje północ. W tym tygodniu Szwecja. Bogata nie tylko w pogański metal i blond gwiazdki pop, zaufajcie mi. Na pierwszy ogień (prawdopodobnie lepszym określeniem byłby "pierwszy lód") Anna von Hausswolff z zespołem. Szwedzka osobowość na scenie muzycznej, jak Karin Dreijer, nieobliczalna jak Antony Hegarty, eteryczna jak Kate Bush. Gotycka songwriterka koncertująca w kościołach i śpiewająca o miłości z diabłem. Gotyckość słychać wyraźnie na każdym kroku, niepokojący pop, straszliwy folk, rock&roll na kościelnych organach - tak brzmi Götebożanka.

"The Miraculous" cudowność ma zastanawiającą. Jest tak cudowny jak opętana dziewczyna chodząca po ścianach, jak kamienny anioł otwierający naraz oczy, jak krwawe łzy Madonny. Cuda niewątpliwie, czy cudowne, nie wiem. Na płycie jest epicko, gdy trzeba, gdy trzeba to pogrzebowo lub klaustrofobicznie. A nad tymi wszystkimi dźwiękami orkiestry rodziny Addamsów prześlizguje się jednocześnie mocny i eteryczny wokal von Hausswolff.

Domowy wilk? W zasadzie to czemu nie - piękna i udomowiona czarna msza.

:NOTGEESE: tsar - tsar (2015) EN

"Poles are not geese, they have their own language" said the poet. They have also good music that should be found. AND swans are not geese either - everything's in order. Let's go.

Tsar - a real new bomb (pun intended and megatonal). What's more, it is a really appropriate new bomb when everything that is called "new" and "Polish" has to be some kind of electropop. Meanwhile, tsar gives us loud guitars and clear melodies. Songs that could be singer-songwriter hits but unfortunately met overdriven guitars. Flagship indie post-rock example - but these are not so popular in Poland. Not so much promising ones anyway. They sounded great even on the acoustic and delicate Sofar in Kraków where they managed to show emotional post-rock amid the gentle music.

It's loud, with guitars, but also, unfortunately, short. We have to wait for more (Polish K MAG says so too so we really have to).

You can pay how much you want for "tsar" but helping the guys from Szczecin is recommended.

:NIE GĘSI:, wiadomo, język i dobrą muzykę mają. Łabędzie to też nie gęsi, nie trzeba więcej wyjaśnień.

Tsar - to prawdziwa nowa bomba (pun zamierzony i megatonowy). Więcej, to właściwa nowa bomba. W  momencie gdy "nowe polskie" to głównie electro-pop - tsar stawia na głośne gitary i wyraziste melodie. Piosenki, które mogłyby być singer-songwriterowymi hitami, ale miały pecha trafiając na przesterowane gitary. Sztandarowy indie post-rock, mało go jednak w Polsce, a na pewno mało tak obiecującego. Dobrze zabrzmieli nawet na akustycznym krakowskim Sofarze, gdzie wśród muzycznie filigranowego towarzystwa pokazali emocjonalny post-rock. 

Jest głośno i gitarowo ale też, niestety, krótko. Należy czekać na więcej (a mówi tak również K MAG więc nie ma co do tego wątpliwości).

Za "tsara" zapłacić możemy ile uważamy, zaleca się jednak wspomagać szczecinian.
