Ascending Divers - Watery Domain (2022)

Hugo Champion, known as the half of the Lisieux duo, makes his solo music under the moniker of Ascending Divers. The French producer has released several albums already, the newest oh which, Watery Domain, was shown to us this August.

His ambient music is dark and monumental, industrial and epic, no wonder that his new album is released by Cyclic Law. The label house describes him as a man providing us with "massively deep atmospherics and drone Sonorites". When his music is not reigned by mountain-reaching electronica, it is wrecked by deep and heavy basses that can make you cry. It's the kind of music that involves so many emotions; even if most of them are dark or darkish, they are definitely worth going through.

A Swarm of the Sun - The Woods (2019) EN

Missing out on this January album was my biggest mistake of this year. Fortunately there came Dunk! Festival where the Swedes threw absolutely brilliant gig enchanting the whole audience with their intimate post-rock. So I decided to come back to The Woods and I couldn't  did better.

The band "has never shied away from the bleakest parts of the human experience. "The Woods" brings you comfort in knowing you’re not alone. It wants to be a companion in the dark". It's done with the characteristic combination of heavy guitars with fragments of peace and lyricism reminding me a bit of their compatriots from Immanu El. The Swedes' music is both the melancholia and the massive, almost pompous guitar sounds with this slow, engaging pace.

The album is made of three tracks and each of them is a phenomenon of its own. Blackout is exactly the massiveness coming at the listener with the slow but inevitable pace, just like icepack would. The Woods inspires awe with the lyrical vocal and is bound to make you cry of sadness and later mesmerize you with the almost prog-like music with riffs with Crippled Black Phoenix' vibes. And finally An Heir to the Throne makes a perfect ballad with the sad melody and brilliant music going on and on.

Przegapienie tej styczniowej płyty to mój największy błąd tego roku. Na szczęście przyszedł Dunk! Festival, na którym Szwedzi z A Swarm of the Sun dali absolutnie fantastyczny koncert i zaczarowali całą publikę swoim intymnym post-rockiem. Postanowiłem wrócić więc do The Woods i był to strzał w dziesiątkę.

Zespół "nie migał się nigdy od pokazywania najmroczniejszych stron ludzkiej egzystencji. "The Woods" sprawi, że poczujecie się lepiej wiedząc, ze nie jesteście sami. Pragnie być kompanem pośród mroku". Robi to dzięki charakterystycznego połączenia głośnych gitar z fragmentami spokojnymi i lirycznymi i trochę przy tym przypomina swoich ziomków z Immanu El. Muzyka Szwedów to zarówno melancholia jak i podniosłe, a nawet bombastyczne gitarowe granie o niespiesznym, wciągającym tempie. 

Album to trzy utwory, a każdy z nich jest fenomenem sam w sobie. Blackout to właśnie masywność nadciągająca z powolnym acz nieuchronnym impetem niczym lądolód. The Woods zachwyca lirycznym wokalem i z łatwością doprowadza do łez smutku, a później hipnotyzuje prawie progresywnym graniem z riffami w stylu Crippled Black Phoenix. W końcu An Heir to the Throne to idealna ballada z rzewną melodią i ciągnącą się w nieskończoność znakomitą muzykę.

Van Gogh Season - Van Gogh Season, Pt. 2 (2019) EN

A year after releasing their debut EP, the Italian Van Gogh Season go on and show their next short album. Inspired by post-rock bands such as Maybeshewill and sleepmakeswaves, recorded three very good compositions.

The band's music is characterized by the wave of raw-sounding guitars soothed down by melodic keys. That's why it's both airy and very loud. The melancholic keys are heard mostly in tracks' introductions and at their ends, tracks that are epic and that develop without hesitation, without unnecessary heavy metal riffs, focused rather on atmosphere building. Plus the obligatory samples with vocals sounding like taken from a space mission. Some variation comes with the fourth track being a piano version of Seoul.

On their Facebook account, the band state that they want to mark their presence on the Italian underground scene as fast as possible and I'd say they are on the perfect path to do so.

Po roku od wydania debiutanckiej EP-ki, Włosi z Van Gogh Season idą za ciosem i pokazują kolejny krótki album. Inspirowani takim post-rockowymi kapelami jak Maybeshewill czy sleepmakeswaves, zawarli na nim trzy bardzo udane kompozycje.

Muzyka zespołu charakteryzuje się falą surowo brzmiących gitar łagodzonych melodyjnymi klawiszami. Dzięki temu jest zarówno eteryczna jak i potężnie głośna. Melancholijne klawisze słychać głównie na początkach i pod koniec epickich kawałków, które rozwijają się sprawnie i nie tracą czasu na niepotrzebne heavymetalowe riffy, a skupiają się na budowie atmosfery. A do tego obligatoryjne sample z wokalem brzmiącym jak z misji kosmicznej. Pewnym urozmaiceniem jest dodatkowy kawałek będący wersją Seoul zagraną gównie na klawiszach.

Na Facebooku zespół zaznacza, że chce jak najszybciej wyrobić sobie markę na włoskiej scenie undergroundowej i jak mi się wydaje, jest do tego na najlepszej drodze.

des Astres - Traxx (2019) EN

Des Astres are a young French band who play some exceptionally atmospheric post-rock. They show it in the short EP released mid January, called Traxx.

If someone likes epic instrumental music with clear love for dense and dark ambiance, des Astres deliver something for them. The band's keen on playing loud, guitar compositions that have so much imaginativeness and grandeur in them that they give the audience the shivers. It is especially true for the EP-closing Osumi whose first part functions as tense-and-sadness-filled introduction that develops into loud, breathtaking finish. Worth recommending.

des Astres - Traxx (2019) PL

Des Astres to młody francuski zespół grający kawał naprawdę atmosferycznego post-rocka. Pokazuje to krótka EP-ka wydana w połowie stycznia, zatytułowana Traxx.

Jeśli ktoś lubi epickie instrumentalne granie z wyraźnym zamiłowaniem do gęstej i mrocznej atmosfery to des Astres tworzą muzykę właśnie dla niego. Zespół ma skłonności do grania głośnych, gitarowych kompozycji, które mają w sobie tyle polotu i rozmachu, że powodują u słuchaczy ciarki na grzbiecie. Zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zamykający EP-kę Osumi, którego pierwsza połowa to pełen napięcia i smutku wstęp zamieniający się w końcu w głośny, zapierający dech w piersiach finał. Godne polecenia.

Sondrous - Something Like Serenity (2018) EN

Sondrous is only a duet made of Gideon Lamprecht and Jaimie Hull from RSA. I'm writing "only" because their music sounds so complexly and otherworldly that it can be hardly believed that it's created by two people only. Their debut called Something Like Serenity is filled with a unique atmosphere that can't be described by words.

To say that Soundrous make dream pop or shoegaze is a terrible understatement. Their music incorporates also elements of ambient, epic post-rock, relaxing music, acoustic music, psychedelic music, dark music... Everything is already visible in the title track Something Like Serenity, this combination of delicate sounds of guitar strings and double airy vocal with elevated fragments in which the soul of the most bombastic post-rock music echoes together with vocals sounding like choirs of ghosts. This is Sondrous.

The most important though is that the synth passages in You Are The Cosmos, delicate backing vocals in Shelter, post-rock might in In Purity, everything makes a coherent, well-thought-through whole, although creating the album from to the release took only five months. This makes Something Like Serenity one of the best albums of the year in my personal ranks.

Sondrous - Something Like Serenity (2018) PL

Sondrous to tylko duet Gideona Lamprechta i Jaimie Hull z RPA. Piszę tylko bo ich muzyka brzmi tak kompleksowo i nieziemsko, że to niemal nie do uwierzenia, ze stoi za nią jedynie ta dwójka. Ich debiut Something Like Serenity wypełniony jest niezwykłą atmosferą, którą trudno w ogóle wyrazić w słowach.

Powiedzieć, że Sondrous tworzą dream pop albo shoegaze to niedomówienie. Ich muzyka zawiera w sobie również elementy ambientu, epickiego post-rocka, muzyki relaksacyjnej, akustycznej, psychodelicznej, mrocznej. Wszystko to widoczne jest już w tytułowym Something Like Serenity, ta kombinacja delikatnych dźwięków gitarowych strun i eterycznego do kwadratu wokalu z podniosłymi fragmentami, w których pobrzmiewa dusza najbardziej bombastycznych kawałków post-rockowych, i w których wokale brzmią niczym chóry duchów, to właśnie jest Sondrous.

Najważniejsze jest jednak to, że synthowe ambientowe pasaże w You Are The Cosmos, delikatne chóry w Shelter, post-rockowa siła w In Purity, wszystko to tworzy spójną, przemyślaną całość, mimo że od napisania do wydania albumu ubyło jedynie pięć miesięcy. Dzięki temu Something Like Serenity znajduje się w mojej osobistej czołówce tegorocznych albumów.

Bend The Sky - Expanse (2018) EN

Expressiveness and elevated emotions, this is something you can find plenty of in the music by the Australian Bend The Sky. The band's instrumental post-rock combines the aggressive sounds of guitars with melancholic keys in the best way possible. The occasion to get into their music appears with the release of their new album, "Expanse".

The musical pathos may be hard to swallow for some, but it has to be stated that music like this by the Australians does a great job in playing with emotions. Euphoric moments when the listener is ready to jump out of the shoes and run to conquer the world is mixed with fragments of sadness and melancholy. And everything done, obviously, with no lyrics. From the very beginning of the album, the band offer what they have best: the skillful combination of guitars, keys and backgrounds with some airy and sacral/elevated backing vocals.

This is extremely steady album and makes a well written whole. It's hard to point at anything and say "this is the best track" as even the great "Navigator" or epic "Pilgrimage" doesn't stand out that much from the rest. The album requires listening to the whole and being ready to get touched.

"Expanse" can be yours for whatever you want to pay.

Bend The Sky - Expanse (2018) PL

Ekspresja i podniosłe emocje, tego w muzyce australijskiego Bend The Sky znaleźć można na kopy. Instrumentalny post-rock zespołu łączy agresywnie brzmiące gitary z melancholijnymi klawiszami w najlepszy możliwy sposób. Okazja by się wkręcić w ich twórczość pojawiła się właśnie wraz z wydaniem nowego albumu "Expanse".

Muzyczny patos nie dla wszystkich musi być zjadliwy, jednak trzeba przyznać, że muzyka taka jak ta proponowana przez Australijczyków znakomicie gra na emocjach. Euforyczne momenty, gdy słuchacz szykuje się aby wyskoczyć z butów i ruszać podbijać świat, przeplata się tu z fragmentami pełnymi smutku i zadumy. A wszystko to oczywiście bez słów. Od samego początku Australijczycy serwują to, co mają najlepsze, umiejętnie łącząc gitary, klawisze i tła, w których królują eteryczne i sakralno-podniosłe chóry.

To niezwykle równa płyta i stanowi dobrze napisaną całość. Ciężko cokolwiek wyróżnić bo nawet świetne "Navigator" czy epickie "Pilgrimage" nie odstają poziomem znacząco. Album wymaga przesłuchania go jako całości i gotowości do bycia poruszonym.

"Expanse" można mieć za ile się tylko chce.

Da Voile - Memoria (2017) EN

One-man project from Minsk seems to be a very productive one. For two last years they managed to create eight albums, EPs and singles. The ninth is here, the fresh "Memoria". And without any doubts, deserves to be put inside the "promising and good oneiric post-rock" box.

They have everything. Beautiful airy cover. Latin track titles. And, what's the most important, great music. It combines, as the best music does, oneiric atmosphere of a freshly squeezed lemon dream and loud, sometimes really loud, guitars forcing your eyes to get overly wet. So it is loud ("Finis") and epic (a monumental "Vitae") and both, loud and epic ("Sed"). It's worth getting into the compositions from Belarus, although they could be better quality-wise. And now you have to set the volume up a bit. But is is a big price for some moments of agitation?

Da Voile - Memoria (2017) PL

Jednoosobowy projekt z Mińska, Da Voile, okazuje się być bardzo płodnym. Przez ostatnie dwa lata wydał osiem płyt, epek i singli. Dziewiątą jest świeżutka "Memoria". I bez dwóch zdań zasługuje na umieszczenie w gablotce "zdolny, dobry oniryczny post-rock".

Ma wszystko. Eteryczną i piękną grafikę. Łacińskie tytuły tracków. I, co najważniejsze, doskonałą muzykę. Łączy ona, niczym u najlepszych, oniryczny klimat świeżo wysnutego snu oraz głośne, miejscami bardzo głośne, gitary zmuszające oczy do nadmiernej wilgoci. Jest więc głośno ("Finis") i epicko (monumentalny "Vitae") a także i głośno i epicko ("Sed"). Warto się zasłuchać w kompozycjach Białorusina, choć trzeba przyznać, że mogłyby być lepsze jakościowo. A tak trzeba przekręcić gałkę głośności ciut bardziej w górę. Ale czy to taka cena za kilka chwil wzruszeń?

Nyctalgia - A Hint of Eternity (2017) EN

Another in last weeks alongside George Will extraordinary and extraordinarily emotional post-rock comes from Switzerland. Silvio Pfiffner of Basel known as Nyctalgia is an artist for obligatory checking and falling in love for everyone who likes crying over beautiful sounds and flying in space.

Pfiffner doesn't cut short on anything. The album from the very beginning is full of this beautiful pathos that reminds of movie scenes of ascension and equally bombastic events. Listener can't get bored with all those strings and dirty guitars and epic drums and delicate keys inviting them to their insane dance. The whole album is an instant ecstasy.

The music is also painful in its beauty. No wonder as the name of the project is also a sickness that involves feeling pain while sleeping. This is what happens to everyone who drowns into the new album by Pfiffner.

Nyctalgia - A Hint of Eternity (2017) PL

Kolejny obok George Will w ostatnich tygodniach nadzwyczajny i nadzwyczajnie emocjonalny orkiestrowy post-rock nadchodzi ze Szwajcarii. Silvio Pfiffner z Bazylei tworzący jako Nyctalgia to artysta do obowiązkowego sprawdzenia i zakochania się dla wszystkich lubiących popłakać nad pięknymi dźwiękami i odlecieć w przestrzeń.

Pfiffner nie szczędzi niczego. Płyta od samego początku napełniona jest pięknym patosem przypominającym filmowe sceny wniebowzięcia lub czegoś równie podniosłego. Od samego początku skrzypce i przesterowane gitary i epickie kotły i delikatne klawisze nie pozwalają się nudzić, zapraszają do swojego obłąkanego tańca. Cała płyta jest jak natychmiastowa ekstaza.

Muzyka ta jest również bolesna w swoim pięknie. Nie ma co się dziwić, nazwa projektu to równocześnie określenie schorzenia polegającego na odczuwaniu bólu w czasie snu. To właśnie dzieje się z każdym, kto zagłębi się w najnowsze wydawnictwo Szwajcara.

Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015) EN

The compass with a violin key needle says: "north". This week Sweden. Rich not only with pagan black metal and blonde pop stars, trust me. To break the ice (accordingly to the geographical location) - Anna von Hausswolff and her band. A unique character of the Swedish music scene, just like Karin Dreijer,  erratic like Antony Hegarty, aerial like Kate Bush. A gothic songwriter who performs in churches and sings about love with the devil. The gothic part of her is perfectly audible everywhere in her works. Worrisome pop, dreadful folk, rock&roll played on church organs - that's what she sounds like.

"The Miraculous" shows a questionable miraculousness. It's as miraculous as a possessed girl who walks the walls, as a stone angel opening his eyes, as Madonna's bloody tears. Miracles, no doubt, but are they miraculous? I don't know. The album is epic where it should be, funeral-like and claustrophobic in other places. And above the sounds of the Addams Family orchestra planes von Hausswolff's both strong and airy vocal.

House wolf? Actually yes - a beautiful and domesticated black mass.
