Midwife & Vyva Melinkolya - Orbweaving (2023)

Everyone who cares about ambient pop as a genre, knows who Midwife is. This time, Madeline Johnston brings on a cooperation between her and Vyva Melinkolya, a Pittsburgh-based band led by Johnston's friend, Angel Diaz. Together, they created an album that will become one of the icons of the genre (as basically anything Midwife does).

The two artists created their music in the middle of a desert in New Mexico and these spiritual vibes can be heard on the record as it talks about very spiritual themes of "hopelessness, calling on a higher power, being alone, and the sublime horror of the natural world" in the form of the ambient pop genre. The inclusion of the band means that there is more of the melodic structures in Midwife's music. While the vocals feel as utterly ethereal as always, the fuzzy, hazy backgrounds hide more of the traditional rock-like music (like in Hounds of Heaven). But the best parts are where the music comes back to the definite, ambient pop ballad areas with the single NMP and its beautiful, charming and very sad melody as well as psychedelically noisy finish.

Midwife is comprised of the joined forces of Madeline Johnston (known as Sister Grotto) and Tucker Theodore under the Antiquated Future records. The two artists went to the miraculous world of slowcore shoegaze or, as the record house claims, drone pop. And it's great news because "Prayer Hands" makes a beautiful and super sad album, perfect for long evenings.

It combines the magic, noise atmosphere with Johnston's otherworldly vocals hidden somewhere in the backgrounds. This combination makes me thing of Grouper's music which is something perfectly in the halfway between dream pop and the shapeless but emotionally reach ambient. This is this kind of music in which guitars are more responsible for creating the atmosphere than melodies and the vocals are just another source of the delicate noise mixing with the rest of the music like tears in the rain.

Dwoje artystów weszło w cudowny świat slowcore'owego shoegaze'u lub, jak chce wytwórnia, drone popu. I znakomicie, bo "Prayer Hands" to przepiękna i przesmutna płyta idealna na długie wieczory.

Miesza się na nim magiczna, noise'owa atmosfera z nieziemskim wokalem Johnston schowanym gdzieś w tle. Ta kombinacja przypominająca chociażby muzykę Grouper jest czymś doskonale w połowie drogi między dream popem a pozbawionym formy, lecz emocjonalnie bogatym ambientem. Jest to muzyka, w której gitary tworzą bardziej atmosferę niż melodie, a wokal to kolejne źródło delikatnego noise'u mieszającego się z resztą muzyki jak łzy na deszczu.
