Flying Moon in Space - Zwei (2022)

They debuted in 2020 (if you don't count a soundtrack album they released earlier) and immediately proved they deserve a place within the Fuzz Club label's team. Their new album sets the bar even higher as this psychedelic delight should appeal to any kind of listener.  

I feel like while their 2020 debut was good, the sophomore Zwei is simply brilliant. It marries and mixes genres and stylistics like it's nothing. It comes from psychedelic rock but involves so much of the pop's energy and catchiness that it should be played on radio. And in this unpretentious drawing from everything around, it goes as far as to rap-ish This Exists or very electronica-oriented vocalless Power. But in general, the Germans make psychedelic music with crazy melodies, unique vocals with a lot of punk's shouting vibes and heavy pace. It's adrenaline and energy kick you can run on for long hours. 

And this works even though the compositions are fairly long. The band doesn't stop for a bit, the music goes on and on in a head-spinning pace with incredibly satisfying flow. No wonder that on their recent remix-filled album, the remixes were provided by such names as Xiu Xiu, Suuns or A Place To Bury Strangers - all of them well known for the music that is both catchy and experimental.

Brutus - Nest (2019) EN

In Poland everyone interested in alternative music knows what's Brutus all about, this is thanks to their great gig at Soundrive Festival. Hopefully it's the same in the whole Europe and all over the world because it's a band with their truly original and extremely engaging style. It  can be admired anew with their new album Nest.

The force behind the trio is undoubtedly Stefanie Mannaerts - the band's vocalist and... drummer. Her priceless energy on the stage and in the studio draws the audience's attention like the strongest electromagnet. Expressive in the way she both sings and plays the drums is what makes the Belgians unique.

As it could be guessed, the album is continuation of the clear, loud, aggressive but also melodic style of the band. The crazy Mannaerts is well fitted by Stijn Vanhoegaerden and Peter Mulders which creates the combination of post-rock atmosphere (Cemetery) with punk rock energy (for example in Techno). And there are also some especially tasteful pieces as for example the almost-ballad, the poignant War.

Brutus - Nest (2019) PL

W Polsce każdy zainteresowany wie z czym wiąże się muzyka belgijskiego Brutus, a to m.in. dzięki festiwalowi Soundrive. Mam nadzieję, że w Europie i na świecie również, bo to zespół z własnym, oryginalnym i nadzwyczaj wciągającym stylem, a podziwiać można to po raz kolejny na nowej płycie Nest.

Motorem napędowym trio jest bez wątpienia Stefanie Mannaerts - wokalistka i... perkusistka zespołu. To jej bezcenna energia na scenie i na płycie przykuwa uwagę słuchaczy jak największy elektromagnes. Ekspresywna zarówno jeśli chodzi o grę na perce jak i śpiewania jest tym, co wyróżnia Belgów. 

Tak jak można się było spodziewać, płyta to kontynuacja wyraźnego, głośnego, agresywnie brzmiącego, a jednocześnie pełnego melodii stylu zespołu. Do szalonej Mannaerts bez problemu dostosowują się Stijn Vanhoegaerden i Peter Mulders tworząc razem połączenie post-rockowej atmosfery (Cemetery) z punkrockową energią (chociażby w Techno). A do tego takie smaczki jak niemal balladowa, przejmujące War.

Elizabeth Colour Wheel - Nocebo (2019) EN

Elizabeth Colour Wheel, punking shoegazers or shoegazing punk rockers from US released their new album. After they were posted about on this blog a year ago with their Queen Tired, now are back with probably even better album called Nocebo.

Because it has it all: mature compositions, poignant vocal (making the back thrill in the opening track Pink Palm) that seamlessly turn into lo-fi punk screams. And greatly energetic music layer successfully combining punk's fast pace and shoegaze's atmosphere. And of course a lot of experiments like in the first track's outro in Somnambulist.

It gets even better when the level of experimenting goes to its heights, just like in the ambient Bedrest, in 34th and its unorthodox composition and finally in Head Home that closes the album in the characteristic for the Americans way: with a great messy explosion.

Elizabeth Colour Wheel, punkujący shoegazerzy albo shoegaze'ujący punkowcy ze Stanów pokazali swój nowy album. Po tym jak rok temu byli bohaterami postu na blogu z płytą Queen Tired, teraz wracają z jeszcze chyba lepszym Nocebo.

Bo nowa płyta ma wszystko: dojrzałe kompozycje, przejmujący wokal (ciarki przechodzą po grzbiecie przy otwierającym album Pink Palm), który płynnie przechodzi w lo-fi'owe, punkowe krzyki. A także pełną energii warstwę muzyczną, która udanie łączy punkową szybkość i shoegaze'ową atmosferę. Oraz oczywiście dużo eksperymentów jak udanie wieńczące pierwszy kawałek outro Somnambulist.

Najciekawiej robi się, gdy eksperymentalność osiąga swoje zenity jak w ambientowym Bedrest, 34th i jego nietypowej konstrukcji czy w końcu w Head Home, zamykającym całość  w charakterystyczny dla Amerykanów sposób: wielką rozpierduchą.

The Death Notes - The Black EP (2018) PL

The Death Notes, zespół porównywany do takich legend jak Joy Division, The Pixies czy Sonic Youth wyrobił sobie już pewną markę w Anglii dzięki wydanej dwa lata temu EP-ce "White". Teraz powracają zmieniając przy tym gwałtownie kolorystykę z bardzo udaną kontynuacją na "Black".

Tak jak kolor cover artu, mroczniejsza zrobiła się muzyka zespołu z Nottingham. Po poszerzeniu składu o basistę Mike'a Sinclaira stała się ona gęstsza, ale nie znaczy to, że ucierpiała melodyjność. Wystarczy posłuchać "Gift of Fear", w którym post-punkowo minimalistyczna muzyka akompaniuje wokalowi Marka Saxtona, nadającemu całości hitowego brzmienia. Dopiero pod koniec kawałka gitary starają się go zagłuszyć, a całość dryfuje w stronę post-rocka.

Zespół sprawnie porusza się też w bardziej drapieżnych, punk-rockowych klimatach ("Evolver") czy zupełnie instrumentalnym graniu ("Theme"), jednak najlepiej wyglądają, gdy pozwalają wokalowi wyprawiać cuda na tle post-punkowych gitar.

The Death Notes - The Black EP (2018) EN

The Death Notes, a band often compared to legends such as Joy Division, The Pixies or Sonic Youth, have already earned some fame after releasing an EP "White" two years ago. This time they are back in a colour-changing way with a new album "Black".

Just like the cover art's colour, somewhat darker is also the Nottingham based band's music. After adding the bassist Mike Sinclair to the line-up, it got more dense but is still really melodic. You can just listen to "Gift of Fear" in which the post-punk's minimalist music accompanies Mark Saxton's vocal that brings some hit song's potential to it. Not until the track's finish, the guitars finally try to take over the foreground and the whole thing heads towards post-rock music.

The band is capable of navigating through more aggressive, punk-rock waters ("Evolver") or clearly instrumental music ("Theme"), but reach their best when they let the vocal make its magic on the post-punk guitar background.
