Empress Ephemeral - Everything Will Probably Be Fine (2025)

My favourite kind of post-rock is probably anything that includes neoclassical instruments in order to make the whole thing either more airy or energetic. But when the neoclassical starts playing the main role, my excitement goes beyond the metaphorical speedometer. And I've already learned that the American s from Empress Ephemeral make me feel that way.

The only ephemeral thing about this music is the band's name. Otherwise, it is crunchy, it is textured, it is tangible. It is a stone thrown at your face, nothing from the string instruments' atmosphere creating qualities. In here, the strings are in the foreground, but they fuel the music's energy and tempo. They are closer to folk strings than neoclassicism. Especially that they are accompanied by heavy and meaty guitars, making the band's works lying exactly on the border of post-rock and post-metal when it comes to heaviness.

No wonder that the artists admit to being inspired by "the raw beauty of their coastal surroundings". It does't sound like an ocean, it FEELS like it. Even the (beautiful, as always with these guys) cover art shows a violent burst of nature origins. This is this music. The only thing I'm not sure about is the album's title. Maybe it's ironical, because this kind of music doesn't make me calmer or less worried about the future. But maybe it's the "probably"'s role.

Everything Will Probably Be Fine costs whatever you want to pay.

Empress Ephemeral - Empress Ephemeral (2022)

There's something so attractive when a metal music is done by artists with a lot of love for experimenting. It certainly is the fact with the New Jersey's Empress Ephemeral in the music of which there's tons of post-metal heaviness but also so much more. The self-titled debut album shows it even too clearly.

In the band's music we can hear some traditional metal riffs. In fact, they are so traditional that sound out of place in the experimental post-rock and neoclassical surroundings. The cello (I believe) sounds make the new album so captivating with their darker-feeling kind of hue which adds up not only to the neoclassical beauty but also tons of atmosphere, GY!BE-style. But there's more form to it than it is in the music of the famous Canadians. And it feels very post-rock-like, especially in the quiet ballads as Lovers of Valdaro for example. But the soft, very sensual tones of this track are not the only surprise here. Uninvited brings striking female vocals into the play and counterbalances their softness with the noisiest guitars explosions on the album. It suddenly feels more like what Fuzzy Lights do with the post-rock genres and I can't decide what side of Empress Ephemeral face I like most.

And it may well be the visual one as their music is fantastic but the cover art for this release is even fantasticer.

Empress Ephemeral costs 5 USD.

Forever Losing Sleep - Ritualistic (2018) EN

Forever Losing Sleep is a band from New Jersey that after releasing their debut album in 2014 disappeared and is gradually appearing back this year finally. In April they showed the word their new EP that is short but managed to catch my attention.

No wonder as "Ritualistic" is filled with dark emotions all the way to the top. The combination of post-rock music and vocal reminding of the old, touching emo (and sometimes of my beloved Mew ("Dazed")) provides a lot of those. The musicians don't try to be super-duper catchy, they are careful to build up an atmosphere and tension in the tracks that create one, longer work. And the finish in "Broken Dance" with, indeed, ritualistically sounding drums, is extraordinarily satisfying.

The lyrics are also accordingly dark and touching as, for example, "Will it ever end, I keep asking myself, how did I get here, shaking in the bathroom, will it ever end ... I was born to sin ". Dark and stunning. I'd listen to more of their stuff.

"Ritualistic" can be yours for whatever you want to pay.

Forever Losing Sleep - Ritualistic (2018) PL

Forever Losing Sleep to zespół z New Jersey, który po wydaniu płyty w 2014 zniknął i pojawia się stopniowo dopiero w tym roku. W kwietniu wydał niedługą EP-kę ale to wystarczyło by przykuć moją uwagę.

Mroczne i mocne, posłuchałbym więcej.

"Ritualistic" można mieć za ile chcesz.
