Seyda Neen - Nocą (2022)

Seyda Neen are a really underrated duo from Bydgoszcz, Poland. Their music combines the catchiness of pop music with moodiness of various alternative genres and five years after their debut release Odwilż ("A Thaw"), they prove it with the sophomore album called Nocą ("By Night").

The band, or an orchestra of electronic delicacies ("orkiestra elektronicznych frykasów"), as the artists call themselves, creates a curious blend of simple but very catchy melodies and synthy, dance-inducing music with dreamy vocals and gloomy themes. As in my favourite among the album palylist, Słońce ("The Sun") that makes a summer hit-like composition with lyrics about depression ("The Sun shine/ the Sun gives joy/ the Sun gives warmth/ to everyone but me"). The pace is not the highest and even when it speeds up, the overall lo-fi vibes make the songs feel chilled and cozy, it's like your local indie pop/rock band put through some highly effective oneiric and slightly dark filters.

Seyda Neen - Odwilż (2017) EN

Seyda Neen, actually Artur Kujawa with guests, is an answer to my never asked question - how to combine a romantic lyricist with post-rock/noise dirt. I wish I asked it before by myself but now I can only treat myself by listening to the album.

It's enough to read through the album's description and then to go deeper into the lyrics to be sure how much introvert this music is. The artist creates music in order to "melt down the ice barriers disturbing the correct perception of the reality". What is this correct perception like? Certainly not the one we anticipate.

Seyda Neen combines very dirty guitar sounds with very poetic lyrics that sound like Polish bands such as the early Myslovitz or Hariasen ("Zanurzyć się"), and this is where the very much underlined by Kujawa "inconsistency" comes from. But despite what he says, I see the album a s a whole. And I do love the tracks such as "Piosenka dla mojego psa" (A song for my dog), transforming into screamo "Chrzęsty" (Crunches) or filled with melancholia "Chłodne lato z Aleksandrą" (A chilly summer with Aleksandra).

Seyda Neen, a w zasadzie Artur Kujawa wspomagany przez gości, to odpowiedź na niezadanie nigdy przeze mnie pytanie, jak można połączyć romantycznego liryka z post-rockowo noise'owym brudem. Pluję sobie w brodę, że nie zapytałem wcześniej i nie poszukałem samemu odpowiedzi. A przy tym zachwycam się płytą bydgoszczanina.

Wystarczy przeczytać opis projektu, a potem zagłębić się w teksty utworów by nie mieść wątpliwości jak bardzo introwertyczna jest to muzyka. Artysta tworzy muzykę "z potrzeby stopienia lodowych barier zakłócających poprawną percepcję codzienności". Czym więc jest poprawna jej percepcja? Z pewnością nie taka, jakiej się spodziewamy. 

Seyda Neen bardzo brudne gitary łączy z niezwykle lirycznymi utworami brzmiącymi jak wczesne Myslovitz albo Hariasen ("Zanurzyć się"), stąd tak podkreślana przez Kujawę "niespójność". Ale na przekór dla jego słów, ja widzę w tym jedność i zachwycam się takimi utworami jak "Piosenka dla mojego psa", przechodzące w screamo "Chrzęsty" czy pełne melancholii "Chłodne lato z Aleksandrą".
